Spring highlights: Hanner Perea

by in Video | June 20th, 2011

Thanks to CityLeagueHoopsTV for this new spring highlight reel of 2012 commitment Hanner Perea:

:10 second mark his armpit is at the bottom of the backboard and his face is at the backboard.  Unreal!  Nothing new that Hanner is an athletic specimen but he will be a force as his touch and ball handling skills around the rim improve.

  • HoosierNshaker

All I can say is WOW…that poor rim!

Can’t wait to see Yogi and Jordy tossing oops to Hanner for the Hoosiers. (I watched this 3 times this morning and I don’t think it’s the coffee, I am pumped!)

    What should his nickname be?
    …”The Hammer” Perea, Air Colombia
    …any other thoughts?

This dude dunks the ball like the rim said something mean about his mom.

Hanner is gonna bang on many a post player in the Big Ten.

This guy dunks the ball better than I can on my Nerf rim in my bedroom.

It is going to be a welcomed adjustment for me to watch a guy in an Indiana uniform do the things Hanner can do.  We’ve had a few guys, Victor, Keith Smart, etc. with spring but this is different.  Hanner is rather big to have this type of hop and he goes hard at the rim.  I can’t think of a guy we’ve had that could do what’s showing in the video above.  Then we add in Cody, Yogi, Jeremy, etc…I just don’t know how you work up a defensive game plan for a team like that if you’re Illinois for example.

I was lucky enough to see him play in person in Kokomo a few weeks ago.  He doesn’t really fill the box score up, as far as scoring, but is a real game changer.  You can’t put a number on the difference in the other team’s play around the rim when he is in the game.  He can really get after the offensive boards, and obviously can block any shot.  He and Cody together will be amazing.

Never really thought about something like, how hard is it to type and at the same time keep drool from getting all over everything, but I know.

Hope Cody is missing his 15 foot jumper and you have a 4 man Hanner can’t jump over for the putback if it misses.  haha.

I mentioned to someone else before Hanner seems to control his jump because he literally jumps too high if he doesn’t.

Second, Freak Athlete is an insult to his ability.

Also….the beat to this is awesome.
Pritchards tip dunk highlight from last year is in jeopardy.

  • unclekerfuffle

I agree that the dunks are off the chart but I was also impressed with how nice of touch he seems to have on the put backs when he was not in the position to dunk.  I think it shows some good decision-making as well–both types of baskets are worth two points.  Get’em anyway you can.

I guess the difference is that one was a shout and the other was a whisper.

  • jgongora86

We need Beejay Anya, or a highly touted center to come over and see Hanner, Cody, and Yogi play together.  The possibility of playing with those two, will make anyone drool.

  • jgongora86

Does anyone know if he is fast enough to play the small forward position?

To his own fault, Hanner won’t beat Victor in a dunk contest because he makes it look to ez and he is taller…. But I don’t think there is anything VO can do that Hanner can’t.

He doesn’t really have the skill set to do that. From what I’ve seen, he’s not the type of guy to hit a contested 3 or take his man to the basket in a one on one situation.

Add his ability inside to Yogi’s ability to distribute in traffic, and ten Big Ten coaches just turned a little grayer.  Unreal!

Everyone talks about how we need a 5. Hanner can easily play a 5 with Cody at 4. Also, no one mentions the fact that Jurkin is a 7 footer. He may need a year to get stronger but Jurkin can Play along with Lyles with is still growing. Sure it would be nice to have a banger but don’t sell these guys short. They will all get bigger and stronger and kill big ten teams.
These kids are still in high school and this good. We are going to have some amazing teams and I am sure coach is not done recruiting! Its time to start cheering. Go Hoosiers

Something the 2012 class will add to Indiana that has been missing for the most part is athleticism.  They will add so much to this team.  Hoosier Hysteria will most certainly be electric upon the arrival of the 2012 class.  Victor and Hanner should make for a pretty exciting dunk contest.

  • HoosierDavey

The 2012 dunk contest between VO and Hanner was all I could think about when watching this.  That is going to be fun!

  • Uncle Joey

I hope Crean is actively recruiting more bigs in the upcoming years, because I have a strange feeling that Mr. Perea won’t be around too long.

  • 11th and Done (Dunn)

Average two bricked dunks a game?

Good observation, though on an under the bucket reverse dunk at the 1:36 mark he does come off of only his left foot. An advantage to jumping off both feet is defensively he’ll want to keep both feet on the ground most of the time. Assuming he will be playing fundamental position defensively, it would take him more time to shift to one foot for his jump to block a shot or rebound.

Another advantage is it is safer to jump off both feet because it is easier to land on both.

  • Danner Perea

what about Will Shehey? his dunks are surprising.
