Nike Spring Showdown Video: Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell

by in Video | May 5th, 2011

One of great things about the ITH community is all of the tips we receive from our readers both via e-mail and Twitter. Such is the case with the following video of Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell that GBuc12 tweeted to us last night.

Here’s another look at Ferrell from the Merrillville Spring Showdown a couple of weeks ago, via 14judge on YouTube:

Inside the Hall also posted video of Ferrell from the event, which you can watch at this link.

Is that Hanner with the orange sleeves?

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

Like like he’s better than the 36th ranked player in the class to me!

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

No, Hanner is No. 12. No sleeves. Throws down a forceful dunk at the 38-second mark.

  • http://www.facebook.com/JamieOwens Jamie Owens

Then who is wearing the hideous orange shirt?

  • Anonymous

I work in Boston and often talk basketball with my OSU-alum co-worker. I’ve bragged about our recruits but I’m not one to send random highlight videos of guys dunking. However, I had to send him this. Within minutes, I was hearing yelps and screams from him, especially for the crossover at the :53 mark.

Regarding Yogi’s IU tenure, and in the infamous words of Bart Scott, CAN’T WAIT!!

  • http://twitter.com/RFinchum Robert Finchum

I remember when there was 35 players in the nation better than him.

  • Anonymous

WOW!!! I think we landed the best point guard in the nation for 2012. His strength is very suprising to me too….. outside of some really large guards, I don’t think he will have any problems on the defensive end. And those handles……man I can’t wait to see this kid!!!!!

  • MillaRed

Seriously, if I lined up 30 player videos of kids you have never seen before, knowing IU needs a PG in the near future, how many of you would pick Yogi or have him in your top 3?

The game is just plain easy to him. He is always in complete control. I won’t say he is unstoppable but it has to be frustrating as H to check him.

When you consider the fact he is unlikely one and done, he is top 10 in my book easy. Let KY deal with the one year wonders. I’m more interested in legacies. And when Yogi arrives, another one will begin.

  • Anonymous

    #23 – Jeremy Hollowell

  • Anonymous

    Completely agree MillaRed.

I am pumped to have Yogi in an IU uniform. Besides all your other points his pull up J is unreal. He can stop and pop on a dime like none other. His ability to stroke the long-range and mid-range jumper make him very deadly as a pg.

Legacy…you are correct. I think he is a three year player but likely a four year player. I know I know…he is really good and many think he could go pro early. But the reality is look up how many players 6’0″ and under are in the league…not many is the answer! Those that are were unreal in college and a large majority were 4-year players in college. Two recent guys, Kemba Walker and Jameer Nelson, were four year players who were POY candidate and POY winner, respectively. Now I am not saying Yogi will be POY one day as those are very high expectations to place on anyone (although he could do that and it would be awesome). My point is he will be a really, really good long-term player for IU at a pivotal position. With the talent Crean is putting around him…better days are ahead!

I think half of those dudes are X-Men or members of the Marvel Alliance or Justice League.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

Hollowell is 33 and didn’t play in this event. Not sure who 23 is.

  • Anonymous

This is just dumb….the ball handling skills alone are enough to make him a top 25 pick, but add in that jumper and slashing, all while having great court vision to make ridiculous passes, I just don’t see how he is not higher on scout…. IMO the best PG in his class, no wonder crean is salivating.

And #0 had to have called the paramedics after that crossover…

  • hoostheman

    Hiy!

  • RobD

    the quickness. it is astounding.

  • RobD

i don’t think Dee Brown is quicker than Yogi.

  • Indiana Red

I just watched that move at :53 approximately 84 times in a row.

  • Anonymous

I did the same thing! I showed half of the office it too. Unreal.

  • Anonymous

There is no way that there are 35 better players in the country. He has to be in the top 10 without a doubt. These rankings must be putting a lot of stock into his (lack of) height, but he seems to do just fine amongst the trees.

I think that poor kid who was guarding him had to have broken his ankles at least 5 times in that video.

  • http://www.twitter.com/GBuc12 BaseballBuc

You know what he has that stands out to me, is instincts. The kid always knows what to do with the ball and always makes the right pass. Similar to Jordan Hulls, and those are things you just can’t teach and i love it.

  • Anonymous

Sheldon, Leonard and the rest of the gang over on The Big Bang Theory would be proud of your comment.

  • MillaRed

Never panics. Even when he picks up his dribble, he is strong, keeps his head up and makes a good decision.

  • MillaRed

    Well said.

  • MillaRed

I would love to be pegged as the #1 class in 2012 but at the end of the day they can rank him at 555. He’s coming to IU anyway.

  • Anonymous

I can’t wait for this kid to walk on campus! He not only knows exactly where the ball needs to go, he appears to see EVERYTHING. I bet he this kid can check out hotties in the 15th row and toss a no look oop to HP at the same time.

  • Anonymous

I had to watch it 5 times just to figure out what it is he had just done. It goes by so fast its hard to even determine on reply. Nasty.

  • marcusgresham

Wherever he wants to go. Whenever he wants to get there.

  • marcusgresham

I’m greedy—I’m hoping there’s already another one there learning the ropes before Yogi leaves (and I think that’s James Blackmon, Jr. I’ll take Jalen James, too. I said I’m greedy.)

  • marcusgresham

I like that he doesn’t seem to care who scores, so long a someone does. His head is on a swivel and if you’re open he’ll hit you; slough off and he’ll just shoot it himself. True PG.

He also uses his height to his advantage by dribbling extremely low. It will be a rare occurrence to see someone swipe the ball from Yogi.

  • Bucky

    It’s astounding. Time is fleeting.

Madness (from the other team) takes it’s toll.

(You may have just nailed Yogi’s theme song from the IU band: his speed is the Time Warp).

  • Brklynhoosier

They say the Flash has some game…

  • Brklynhoosier

This is the only way I can explain the drop-off in his rankings. Recruiting services aren’t used to seeing hs kids so unselfish with the ball — you get a kid like Yogi, who just creates, doesn’t necessarily put up huge numbers every game, they don’t see it. They will, though — put him on a national stage in Cream and Crimson… Good God! Can’t believe we have to wait another year!

  • Anonymous

Completely agree. They can rank him wherever they wish, but I bet opposing PGs in the Big Ten will rank him higher after they attempt to guard him.

  • Kelin Blab

    My only comment is “wow”.

  • http://twitter.com/stevetodd73 Stephen Jackson

    Thats what Im talkin bought

  • IUJeff

I believe that 1:35 of footage from one game is better than any 1:35 footage of pg play we could put together from the last 3 years of IU bball. He has to be the #1 pg in the class.

  • Anonymous

Wow. He is a great player. As for the rankings… Who cares, it is a number. It makes no difference. Cannot wait for these recruits to put on the Indiana jersey.

  • Marsh21

I thought Jordan might keep the starting point guard position when Yogi hits campus but huh…..I’m not thinking so at this point.

  • oldred1976

Man oh Man I’m getting excited.I was just thinking about Big Ten Payback time! Then i realized we still are a year away . Can somebody freeze me for about 14 months.

  • Anonymous

Ron Patterson should be drawing comparisons to Jordan Crawford.

-Athletic 2 guard whose burner is better than people think, that’s a jump shot on the south side of Chicago for those confused

    -He’s a scorer like Crawford..not a shooter. for example. Shooter=Kyler Korver, Scorer= Derrick Rose

-underrated prospect out of high school

    -Big
reason people need to be hyped on Bus is his attitude on D. Crawford is
in the NBA because he can drop 30 on you any given night…Patterson
will have big scoring nights too but he will help the team and himself
go to new heights because his commitment to defend the perimeter.

  • Anonymous

I would say more like Chris Paul of New Orleans.

  • Anonymous

I read on ESPN that Crean is on the “hot seat” and if he does not produce this year it will not be good regardless of the recruits…

  • Anonymous

that’s absurd. If CTC is shown the door, “the Movement” will become “the Bowel Movement” and we’ll be in the crapper again for the next decade or longer. I can’t see Fred Glass making this the “make or break” season for Crean. Look at the latitude given to IUFB program in terms of coaching. I agree that the program needs to begin to produce results, but jeez! The circumstances have sucked and they’re just now beginning to NOT suck.

  • Plane1972

bailey, I’m not trying to shoot the messenger here, but this is a tired subject. Crean’s place on the hot-seat is complete conjecture and one that none of us has the faintest idea of what is going on in the minds of IU’s real decision makers. My only comment is if the recruits are of no consequence in Crean’s perceived job security, then IU will return to the stone age if Crean gets fired and those recruits head elsewhere. If you think the 2001 team had a powerful voice in secruing Mike Davis as coach, just think what the 2012-14 teams will be able to do. Anyone foolish enough to consider removing Crean anytime within the next 2-3 season is ridiculous.

  • Anonymous

There were a few Indiana Elite guys practicing at LC last night and no doubt, Buss is going to be everything we imagine and more. His stroke is pretty sweet, his athleticism is astounding, his confidence is growing, and his body is legit B1G size as a junior in high school (he’s got Dwight Howard shoulders). Can’t. Wait.

  • Devout Hoosier

@bailey22:disqus If Crean goes, so does the AD, President, & all the Trustees. It would be absolutely absurd to end Crean’s contract after next season no matter what. I’ve said before, a normal circumstance with upper classmen returning and some committed recruits you would give a coach 3 years. Crean (or any coach) gets 5 years at IU before we get the score card out and tally up. No upperclassmen, hell no team but one scholly that was a walk on and almost no commited recruits that stayed. I give Crean a lot of credit for talking this situation which I’m sure is worse than he imagined. He’s taken his good coaching record and absorded how many losses at IU? Trust me, it kills him. He’s working *very* hard to correct this ship and I am very proud in how he is doing it. We’ve have a coach and an athletic director that actually loves this school and it’s tradition. Crean went and got the Indiana kids that love this state’s tradition. Every night they’ll play for the home crowd. Every weekend they will have to deal with their parents, uncles, anut’s, neighbors, strangers on the streets praising and critiquing them. We’re going to have 13 Jordan Hulls soon and I can’t wait.

  • InTheMtns

If he’s on a “hot seat,” I think probably the only place that is, is with the national sports media like ESPN. I’m pretty sure he isn’t on a “hot seat” with Fred Glass or the administration. There a some fans who’d like for him to be on a “hot seat,” but some of them have been calling for him to be fired even before he arrived on campus. The majority of fans, even though we are restless and eager for better seasons, are still giving him the benefit of doubt and reserving the “hot seat” for later.

CTC is bringing in solid recruits, none of the players make the police blotter, players graduate and the APR is rising so I’m fairly certain the administration and Glass see CTC in a positive light. At the same time, I imagine that they are also putting some pressure on him to start winning. But I doubt that it is any more pressure than he is already putting on himself. When he renegotiated his contract into a ten year contract, I’ll bet there was talk at that time about it taking five years to get IU truly competitive again. I’d agree that if the team doesn’t make significant progress this next season, then CTC will be on the “hot seat,” but I doubt that he’s there yet with the possible exception being so with of the national sports media.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know if he is on the hot seat or not that is just what I read, but I will say this… there is absolutely no excuse if we do not win this year. People can say what they want but Im sorry we are not a young team anymore.

  • Plane1972

Kinda sounds like you are closer to the hot-seat theory than the five-year plan side of this argument, bailey. There are plenty of reasons why IU may not win significantly more games this year: tougher non-conference schedule, Mo Creek’s health, Cody Zeller is the only frontline addition we made and he will be a Freshman, we still need to establish stronger PG play, etc. I don’t prescribe to that and believe we will win several more games this year, but those are all major question marks that Tom Crean knows better than anyone. He is doing a fantastic job of righting this ship with quality young men and coaches and deserves all our praise in having done so in such a short period of time.

I guess my issue is how a team like Michigan is soooo much better than us and they are not that much more talented if at all….
