2011 guard Remy Abell makes the call for Indiana

by in Recruiting | April 27th, 2011

On Wednesday afternoon, Indiana picked up a third player for its 2011 recruiting class — Louisville Eastern guard Remy Abell.

The 6-4, 180-pound Abell was selected for the Kentucky All-Star team and was named first team All-State by The Courier-Journal. He averaged 16 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.5 steals and had 25 blocked shots during his senior season at Eastern.

Inside the Hall caught up with the newest Hoosier shortly after his commitment for a Q & A:

On when he knew Indiana was the place for him

“It kind of helped me after I made the visit on Monday. I was thinking about it a lot and it’s a great school, great program, great history and I’m real excited to be a Hoosier.”

On the Monday visit to Bloomington

“I just met some of the players, hung with the coaches. And Coach Crean, he’s the head coach and he’s a future hall of fame coach. I know he’s going to push me, but I know he can make me a better player in the long run. The rest of the coaching staff was just great and just seeing the facilities, visiting around the campus, it was great.”

On the tradition of the Indiana program

“I know they’re a winning program. They’re like third or fourth at winning the most championships. They’re one of the elite programs in Division I college basketball. It’s a big honor to be a Hoosier and I just can’t wait to get started.”

On the recruiting process and switching schools after a coaching change at Bradley

“Trying to get the release with Bradley was kind of overwhelming, but I’ve been patient. I feel like everything happens for a reason. Going to Indiana will be an even better fit for me so I’m real excited.”

On playing against Austin Etherington and Cody Zeller in the Indiana-Kentucky All-Star game and building a relationship with those future teammates

“Maybe I can go up to IU and visit and meet them up there. But I can’t wait to play against them and definitely try to build a relationship.”

On his game and what he will bring to Indiana

“I’m just a hard worker, I’m a team player. I always look for my teammates. I can score in transition. I like to get to the rim, get to the basket. I can pull up J. I’m just a team player and like to have fun.”

    Welcome to IU!

Really seems committed to CTC and the program. I was doubtful about his recruitment at first, but he’s sold me. I look forward to seeing him on the court next year!

  • IUeconAlum

You are officially a Hoosier for life. Welcome to the family Remy.

  • http://www.twitter.com/GBuc12 BaseballBuc

The answer to the last question is something IU has been lacking for years, in my opinion.

  • http://www.myspace.com/Wojt MemphisHoosier

i don’t know a lot about this kid but from what has been said he is a good athlete, good defender, and can get to the rim. These are three things our teams needs more of. I dont know what spot on the depth chart he is at but adding more talent and more athletic ability are always a great thing. welcome to hoosier nation friend

  • unclekerfuffle

Welcome to the IU family, Remy. You will be impressed with how much support you will have.

I expect you to have that same expression (stone cold killer) on your face when you step on the court next year. I love the attitude.

  • Dannon Brown

This kid can play ball….. Sounds like he needs to get his outside shot worked out a bit, but his slashing ability and ball handling appear to be well polished. He has good quick feet on defense, can stay with a defender and has good length. At 6’4 he should be an impact in year 1 as our #2 ball handler.

  • cooper

Is he a roster filler or a guy that can or will contribute? Bradley is not exactly the level of talent player IU needs

  • Dannon Brown

posted a couple of links in his other thread from earlier…… youtube Eastern vs. ballard and there are 2 lengthy films of them… he wears #10.

He joins the team as the best slasher on the roster………. should really be a rivers with offense is what i am seeing in the video. Can get to the hole and finish, but also handles the ball very well and makes smart plays.

  • Anonymous

Judging from the look on his face, seems like he is a nasty, tough, mean defender who doesn’t just want to beat you, but embarrass you in the process…..exactly what IU needs!

    Welcome to Indiana!

  • RobD

    Two words guys.

    A.J. Moye.

    Maybe that’s three.

  • Luke72

If he could give us 10 min. a game of good guard play he will be a real help! He’s played against some good talent and sounds like he’s been well coached. Eastern his HS team where very good!

  • http://twitter.com/stevetodd73 Stephen Jackson

actualy I think that might be 4 words

  • eph521

Give Remy an A+ for attitude, what’s not to like with what he said? He’s a well spoken young man.

In terms of his basketball skills… First team All-State, by the writers. I’m impressed with that type of recognition from any state, let alone Kentucky… HS basketball, from what I hear, is pretty big in that state.

25 blocks as a senior in HS… and he’s only 6′ 4”. Remind anyone of Buss?

In terms of him originally committing to Bradley… well, I can think of several less known D1 and D2 players that have came into Assembly Hall the last few years and made us look silly. Talent is everywhere and sometimes you find a diamond in the rough. Maybe Crean has found his for 2011.

  • Kelin Blab

Remy is saying the ‘victor’ like things. I hope he brings that competitiveness, ability to get to the rim, and be a team player. I like the fact he likes to have fun….I enjoy watching Victor and Will because they get after it with a smile and some intensity on their face…..I hope Remy does the same.

I will officially buy a ticket to the Indiana v Kensucky all star game.

    Great interview.

On the surface it doesn’t seem like we need another guard, but I wonder if Crean is just stacking the roster in case we lose Ferrell, Hollowell and / or Harris (fingers crossed) to the NBA. If those guys leave early, Abell could add some experience, even if he doesn’t get much PT during his first couple of years.

Welcome to Indiana Remy. Prepare to enter a new world of basketball.
If he is a true point guard, he can really fill a hole that has been missing. I know some people are skeptical that he was committed to Bradley, but talent can be found anywhere. Obviously, we cannot question Crean’s recruiting right now, so maybe he is a good pick-up.

  • Kelin Blab

Goff gets a release from OU…interesting. And the plot thickens…

  • Casey B.

That’s a good point, but I really, really don’t think that’s the case.

I think Crean added Abell because he’s thinking one thing, and one thing only:

“I’m not going to wait for 2012 to win and improve.” I doubt he’s even worried about any season other than next right now.

There is NOTHING to be negative about with Remy Abell! He is a good 6’4 guard. Other schools wanted him, Butler included. He fell in love with “it’s Indiana” just like the rest of us. He seems enthused to give his all. Welcome to Indiana Remy! The rest will work itself out. We don’t have to micro-manage Coach Crean. He knows what to do-win 20 games next season! No more excuses. Indiana has good players. Do it!

  • Anonymous

Is this for real? I would love to add Goff next!

  • Anonymous

Three words and at least 30 seconds to say it.

  • HoosierDavey

If he is close to that kind of talent, I don’t think anyone will complain (well, maybe if his jumper is as bad as Rondo’s)

  • IUJeff

Here is Goff 7 months ago:

  • Marsh21

I like this kid for our team. We need strong defense at the 1 or 2 spot and this kid will get his minutes for sure. Welcome Mr. Abell!

  • Q95

i think this is a solid pick-up. he comes from a pretty solid program in jefferson county. there are several of these louisville based teams that really get after each other on the hardwood. there is no doubt this guy knows how to compete.

by the way, when was the last time we signed anyone from louisville, or the state of kentucky.

  • Kelin Blab

I agree Casey a bad 2011 Crean could see 2012 from somewhere else. Let 2012 deal with itself when it gets here…win now baby

Coach needed to do something drastic to break the losing mentality this team has carried the last 3 years, in order for the team to live up to it’s potential this season. The fact is, the Juniors and Seniors on this team have known nothing but losing. As a result, if nothing was done, we would of lost several games we should of won this 2011 season.

Now we have an opportunity to break that cycle. Why? Because it’s LITERALLY win or go home for some of these guys. If they make it to the court this year, it’s because they learned how to win in practice against very talented competition. If they don’t, we just aren’t going to have the scholarship numbers to keep them.

It’s tough, but I don’t see any other way to break the losing cycle before a whole new starting 5 comes in 2012.

For this reason, I say go for Robert Goff.

Yeah some people will likely get pushed out, or maybe some people (Watford, Creek) will have break out years and make it to the NBA. Sounds unlikely now, but the competition is about to get fierce, and when you have that, the cream rises to the top.

  • 11th and Done (Dunn)

    Nope.

  • Roninjeffersonville

Alex Demling is reporting: He’ll sign financial aid agreement since you can’t sign two LOIs in one year. Wouldnt this make him a walk on ? And wouldn’t effect the scholarship numbers?

  • Anonymous

Are you saying he was the best slasher at Eastern, or he’s going to be the best on IU’s roster this year?

  • Anonymous

I believe Bradley has put a player in the NBA since Indiana has.

  • Anonymous

For the first decade or so of Knight’s tenure there were no players outside of Indiana, Illinois, or Ohio (until Jim Thomas from Florida and Joe Hillman from California,) and there haven’t been any since then. I couldn’t answer to anything prior to that.

    Jody Demling?

  • Roninjeffersonville

    Yes

  • Roninjeffersonville

Ok maybe I should have spaced more . Was asking a question of Alex

Welcome aboard, and i like what Remy can potentially bring to the table. From a defensive standpoint, it allows us to go bigger at guard, and i like the fact that if he gets minutes at point guard then he will offer some intriguing lineups with nice size on the perimeter.

  • Glawton12

He’ll still count towards the scholarship number. This is a procedural thing that has to be done since he already signed a LOI but was released from it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-Bickham/100000136857590 Jason Bickham

Why aren’t we saving this scholly for Gary Harris. I know we need help now but Gary Harris could get us a Big Ten title at the minimum in 2012.

  • IUJeff

Our 2 most glaring weaknesses last year IMO were an absence of post presence and good point guard play. Crean has now addressed both of these with this incoming class. If GH wants to join The Movement, there will be room.

  • InTheMtns

Remy is the first player from Kentucky to join the Hoosiers since Tom Boone in 1969. Tom was from Louisville and played only one year. Jerry Oliver was the coach. Indiana has had a grand total of five (count ‘em, five) players from Kentucky since the beginning of time. Now, for bonus points, the five were: Boone 69-70, Neal Skeeters 53-55, Bob Ravensburg 43-44, Ralph Dorsey 37-40 and Clarence Hocker 02-04.

  • IUJeff

Agreed. The culture of losing and being okay with it for some of the players HAS to go. It is time for the players to get a chip on their shoulders.

Don’t know about Goff tho. Look at the youtube link I posted below. Was 7 months ago but looks like his 3 star ranking to me. Serviceable but not elite. IU can get elite players once again.

  • Dannon Brown

He will be the best slasher on IU roster the day he steps on campus.

  • Anonymous

love that video of goff. not overly impressive but just what we need, more depth on the inside. a bruiser if u will

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I know. It almost makes me wonder what’s going on when IU took this kid so quick and then Goff comes available immediately after. Did we not know that a big we recruited was going to be available? Someone may have dropped the ball when it comes to keeping abreast of that situation.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

The more I see what CTC is doing and the more I think about it, the more I wonder why BC, DE, or Roth would stay at Indiana this year when they could finish out their 1 or 2 years of eligibility somewhere else where they would get more playing time? I mean, in 2012 BC and DE won’t touch the floor, or at least they probably shouldn’t. Sorry about the transfer talk, but now someone has to go and the time is drawing near for that decision to be made!

  • millzy32

The funny thing is when you say 02-04 you mean 1902-1904 don’t you. Now that’s a little while back.

  • millzy32

I would actually be pretty shocked if CWat got drafted even after his senior season so I don’t think him leaving after this year is of any concern other than he’ll be here for the duration barring transfer and hopefully that is a good thing.

  • millzy32

If Gary Harris wants to go to IU then Gary Harris will go to IU and Crean will make sure that happens. No scholarship nonsense will stop Crean from landing a talent like GH. Harris has a lot of offers and there is also a guy that plays his role already signed up in 12 (Patterson). I would love to get Harris too but the fact that he hasn’t committed yet to IU may say something.
