HD Video: Gary Harris talks AAU, Indiana, recruiting

  • 04/09/2011 11:12 pm in

We’ll have no shortage of content from the IndyBall.com Shootout over the next few days, but here’s a video interview with 2012 Hamilton Southeastern guard Gary Harris after his second pool play game at North Central on Saturday afternoon.

The five-star junior talked about the AAU season getting underway, Indiana, a timeline for cutting his school list, a new school in his recruiting picture and more:

And here’s a dunk by Harris from a pool play game against Spiece Indiana Select 2012:

Update: We’ve added a longer highlight reel of Harris after the jump:

There is nothing about Gary Harris that says kentucky to me. The formula has been working for Crean….recruit the friend and the friend will follow.

how long has kentucky been talking to him couldent hear that part

  • Since the end of his basketball season.

  • If there’s one guy that has handled the recruiting process like an absolute pro, it’s Gary Harris. I want him on my team.

I’ve been pretty pessimistic regarding our chances to land Harris, but after watching that interview, I feel that he is strongly considering IU at the very least. Loved that class before JH committed. Hard to imagine it with GH too. WOW!

I can’t see him at Kentucky either, especially if they started recruiting him about a month ago. If we go off his answers, relationship with the coach and players are driving his decision. I would think that might disqualify Calipari and Probation U. I still think it is IU, UL, MSU and PU. Hopefully in that order!

Who else plays on Gary’s AAU team?

If you can have Gary Harris or DSR, who do you take?

Obviously the interest from Harris toward IU is higher, and I’m not sure IU has the interest in DSR that it once did. I would assume that Gary’s athleticism plays a big role in his overall upside and the fact that he hasn’t punched anyone. But all DSR does is consistenly score the ball. He was named the Super Metro player of the year by the Star and I was pretty impressed with his interview, it came across as very mature and he mentioned Peter Jurkin as being one of the funniest teammates he has had. If the mutual interest was there from all parties, I think you throw the scholly out there and say first come first serve between the two, but my guess is DSR leaves the state.

Who does DSR play AAU with? Is Mitch McGary a backup option if Gary Harris goes elsewhere and what other schools are involved with him?

  • Kelin Blab

RJ Hunter is the most notable on his AAU team but he is out with an injury. I take Gary Harris all day long over DSR.

IU lands Gary Harris, I will open a special “Final Four” savings account for 2013 in Georgia, 2014 in Dallas (hopefully I can get in right Jerry Jones?), and 2015 in Indianapolis…..

Surely Crean can get them there one of those years…..Money will be no object (hopefully my wife doesn’t read this)

  • I’m reaching here, but are coaches allowed to e-mail players? We didn’t have e-mail when I was being recruited :).

I ask because in that video he said he’s been e-mailing with Kentucky and then seemed to quickly change it to “only phone calls”.

The only downside for Harris is he could be one-and-done if he continues to develop at the rate he has been. DSR is a hard one to figure…how much better is he going to get? He’s great now…really, really good but he looks like a man while the other guys look their age. You don’t loose either way but I guess I’d go with Harris because his future teamates appear to lean that way. Hollowell in particular mentions Harris on a regular basis. By the way, Hollowell was a perfect addition to the 2012 class…perfect. My wish list before Harris or DSR though is a good, hardnosed, banger. Perhaps Hanner will become a banger, Davis seems to be headed in that direction but he’s 2013.

    In short though, Harris.

Apparently you missed the ‘I want to play where I will get better.” comment Harris made in the interview. Can you explain how playing for Crean will help him improve as Crean has not done much with current players, ie CW & DE play NO defense?
I would love to land Harris, but he will excel at UK, imho.

  • Kelin Blab

Gary Harris can’t play post defense a lick and does not provide any inside presence. The kid from Hunnington fills more of a need than Gary Harris and by watching Indiana Elite yesterday minus Jurkin, the 2012 group coming in would be just fine without Gary. Trust me…

  • Kelin Blab

However if you look at the numbers….Watford, Hulls, Oladipo, and Sheehey have all gotten better as the season progressed. Sure they are not lock down defenders for example but it is hard to argue Watford did not improve from his Frosh to Soph year and the same can be said for Hulls. I think Harris needs to improve his jumpshot for certain

This is the first I’ve seen of him, didn’t know he was a lefty and had the jumper. Knew he could leap like Hanner.

It’s hard to gauge progress with CWatt and Elston though defensively because they’re constantly asked to play out of position. I know that’s not much of an excuse, but it’s something.

  • Kelin Blab

Also how do you get better when in practice you have to defend Jeff Howard?

  • Kelin Blab

Another reason to believe Gary Harris is coming to IU. He saw first hand how good they will be today when Yogi and the Crew took care of them at the Indyball. Just think Gary you can be with them or lose to them like you did today.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

Yeah, this is a load of crap if you ask me! Cali”slimeball” has never developed anyone outside of maybe Marcus Camby because nobody he recruits ever stays more than a year anyway! I get sick when I listen to people talk about how he prepares players for the NBA. The only way he prepares players for the NBA is by helping them put a deposit down on their Navigator and Mansion!

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I’ve already taken the liberty of emailing a copy of this post to your wife. She said she doesn’t care because your value to her vanished when your heart condition made you an ineligible candidate for Viagra.

    Sorry Kelin

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

Looks a lot like Jones at pUKe! Thus, he’s probably a one and done player. He looks like he has the size and skill level to be a one and done.

If he wants to improve he may end up at Michigan State.

totally agree. see him as a Spartan.

Harris. I’m not terribly interested in DSR, especially after the sucker punch he threw on a guy on the floor whose back was turned to him. Hopefully, that was an out-of-character moment, but that left me with character concerns.
