IU assistant watches Huntington Prep’s Djimde on Thursday

by in Recruiting | April 8th, 2011

Indiana assistant coach Tim Buckley was in Huntington, West Virginia on Thursday to watch Ibrahima Djimde, according to Jody Demling of The Courier-Journal.

The 6-9, 230-pound Mali, Africa native recently received his college entrance test score, which is leading to more recruiting interest. He’s a member of the 2011 recruiting class.

Djimde, who goes by the nickname “Ibby,” is rated the No. 53 center nationally by ESPN.com.

Here are some quotes on Djimde from Huntington Prep coach Rob Fulford from an interview conducted by Zach Osterman for Inside the Hall back in February:

“I saw him in the spring, and I didn’t like him. I saw him in the summer and liked him a little, but he still wasn’t ready. Since we saw him in the spring until we got him in August, he was a different player. From Aug. 18 to now, he’s a completely different player.

“He improves every day. He’s a four-year kid that’s gonna work hard. He can defend the four and the five.

“There is some interest there (from Indiana). He plays so hard, he’s one of those kids that, he’s intriguing because of his size and athletic ability, and then he plays hard.”

Yes, I do know this much, Bawa wanted to stay at IU. But he also wanted to get on the floor. He was told that he would see very little time on the floor and it was “suggested” that he could develop more elsewhere. He was told to move on in a very nice way.

  • Anonymous

We just disagree. I think that Elston can be a very good player at IU. He needs coaching. Do you think that Brad Stevens at Butler would throw him out the door?

  • RobD

nobody is talking about throwing him out the door. but there are legitimate concerns about his ability to grasp the offense and play without having to think about it. he has tons of athletic ability but pretty poor judgment (did you watch him play this year?) and probably saw so little PT because of it.

  • RobD

“does he have decent enough instincts to know where to go (unlike Tijan and Bawa…”

    and elston. sorry, it’s true.

  • Plane1972

That’s an excellent point, BGleas. It’s just a bit of a leap from where we are right now is what I was trying to say (not very well, I guess). I still look at 2011 as an opportunity to add a piece to an already promising two-man class and I think Crean feels the same as he is still trying to balance out his classes. A six-man class in 2012 is a little concerning to me, as great as it would be to land Harris. However, if some of our guys pan out as early entrants into the NBA or we have simple attrition, that probably works itself out. If Crean takes a chance on 2011, I say go for a big.

  • Casey B.

Maybe we need to place a higher priority on recruiting a legitimate center earlier on in the game. Waiting to find a late savior at center during the spring is a dangerous and generally unsuccessful tactic (as we’ve seen).

For all of the names that have popped up in IU’s recruiting stream the past few years, how many have been someone you could look at and say, “that is a really solid center?”

Granted, there aren’t a ton out there, but it’s always the Abrahams, the Michels, the Yeguettes, etc.

In my opinion, if we don’t get Traylor, I think Crean would be better served to hold onto the scholarship, find the best center in the 2012 class, sit him down, and show him the players he’ll have coming in around him.

  • Plane1972

Come on, Loop. You’re just being contrary this Friday. Of course Stevens wouldn’t throw Elston out the door the same way Crean wouldn’t when he was staring at his roster at the time. He needed a warm body. Granted Elston was not a stiff coming out of high school. He was a player with a good pedigree and some accolades. But those guys don’t always work out and he has shown himself to be less than serious about himself on the court, at times. He could be our lazy-eyed psycho with a jumpshot, but he’s a finesse player who hasn’t figured out how to play defense and it’s not all Crean’s fault as you would have us believe.

  • Plane1972

Peter Jurkin was the first to commit in 2012. Give me a break, Casey. You act like Crean is asleep at the switch for making some last-minute moves for ’11 on the heels of several grand slams he’s had in recent months.

  • stonaroni

Casey has a point man. And PJ hasn’t proved a thing. he might even reclassify to 2013. That is another 2 season without a true C. I do not want the #57 ranked C on our team. that is the thinnest position out there so to take #50 whatever is like having the #233rd SG in the nation. I do not want that guy either.

  • stonaroni

Cant imagine Bawa would have been worse tha DE, and Capo last year.

  • stonaroni

Elston showed little more than being the class clown last season. He is not improving and Elston needs to look in the mirror and quit whining every time he gets a foul called on him. No one in America plays post defense worse than DE and his alligator arms and hand near his shoulders. Put thye weightroom to use, spread your legs, bend your knees, extend those arms and center the guy in your chest….not hard, but apparently it is for DE. That is not on CTC. I guarantee at the least CTC and staff is teaching simple post D.

  • stonaroni

Let me put this in perspective. Elston’s dad played at UNC and professionally. I am sure he showed DE some post defense mecahnics and skills. I am sure he was taught them in jr high. DE is now a JR at IU and still cannot grasp it. That is on DE, not CTC nor his dad.

  • stonaroni

He would not throw him out the door, just put him at the end of the bench due to his ridiculously awful defense. You have to play D to get on the floor at Butler.

  • Casey B.

While Jurkin is certainly an encouraging prospect, he’s still a prospect, nonetheless. He’s ranked as the 23rd best center. My point is, when’s the last time we’ve even TRIED to go after Nos. 1-10?

I’m not knocking Crean’s recruiting. The 2012 class is unbelievable, and landing Zeller was huge. My point is, if we want to avoid situations like this, maybe we should try making the top centers nationally priority No. 1 from here on out.

I have nothing against making a late move, as long as it’s one that’s going to actually help the team.

  • Plane1972

Oh, so Peter Jurkin is now a questionable recruit in your opinion? Cody Zeller and 2012 were Crean’s first recruiting challenges. What position did he fill first in the 2012 class? Center. A center the ITH nation has been pretty stoked about since he committed, so don’t start poking holes in Jurkin. What other centers, who weren’t already being courted by top programs, was Crean supposed to get in on earlier and make a compelling argument that they were looking at a viable school? Insane.

  • stonaroni

read the article on rivals, doesn’t sound like that. I think ESPN sucks when it comes to ranking players and they seem to “overhype” quite a bit.

  • http://www.twitter.com/GBuc12 BaseballBuc

I feel like Tom Crean and his staff are at a bar seeing all these pretty women. They are approaching these women, saying hi, but no one wants to go ahead and buy them a drink or ask them out.

  • Anonymous

If you are going to get snippy, at least know what you are talking about. Yes I watched every game, Elston played 15.5 min/game, was #3 in Fg% at .512, tied for #3 in rebounds/game at 3.7/game, and was #6 in points/game at 4.9. No he did not play as well as he should have. No he did not play the position that he should have. You are wrong about the door. You are talking about adding a 3rd recruit to 2011. We already have 5 recruits for 2012 and most of us want a 6th (Harris). If you can add that makes 16 players in September 2012. You are allowed only 13. So three hit the “door”. The obvious two are Capo first, then Elston. Try dealing with the real world!

  • Anonymous

Debate with me not some fantasy. I did not say that it was “all” Crean’s fault, did I? Admit your misrepresentation. But a big part of getting Elston to improve is coaching!

  • Anonymous

Everything that you just said is exactly what a good coach would have not only said but constantly worked on until there was improvement! And if you have no one on the team that can play post defense, what do you do? You install a tough, moving, match-up Zone!

  • Anonymous

Wrong! There are no 7′ players in junior high school. Do you remember Zadok (sp) at Duke in 2010! I do. Coach K taught him a lot about post defense in 2-3 years!

  • Plane1972

    How quickly we forget.

    Rivals rankings: Kaleb Tarczewski (#4 Center 2012), AJ Hammons (#10 2012), Rakeem Christmas (#1 2011), Michael Chandler (#4 2011), Marshall Plumlee (#9 2011), Moses Abraham (#11 2010).

It’s not been for a lack of trying on Crean’s part to land a quality center since arriving.

Prospects are prospects until you take a chance on one. I think we all agree (or should) that Jurkin’s game of running the floor is better suited for Crean’s style than a back-to-the-basket guy that is higher rated. I also think he’ll be higher than #23 before it’s all said and done.

  • Kelin Blab

Been away from the net but time to catch up and stir it up…..Here we go….

+ This kid is bigger than Traylor, as athletic, and some hate him already because for some reason he is compared to Tijan and Bawa….help me understand this one?

+ Newsflash…We don’t need Gary Harris and he can’t defend the post nor does he block shots? I know you would love to have the super 6, and I would too but when we roll up against wisky going 6’2 pg and everyone else is 6’8 to 6’10 how much will another wing help us.

+ Hello, I am a twisted ankle, if I show up on your boy Cody, your post will be the same one’s you had the past two years…how would you enjoy that? We need interior, no ball needing post players, who rebound, defend, on ball and weakside.

+ If you love rankings you will love the fact the the kid Derrick Williams wasn’t ranked in rivals top 150…you know the guy from Arizona that played himself into a NBA pick during the NCAA tourney….Rankings mean absolutely squat.

  • Kelin Blab

None of the things you listed about Bawa really interest me, a team with no post presence needs a guy who wants to come in a be that. Love Bawa’s smile and his frame but he did not develop enough…..I work with kids all the time and one’s that get better are the ones that put in the work on their own and the coaches add to that.

Crean didn’t teach Hulls how to shoot Hulls put in the work, Crean provided the atmosphere to succeed. Bawa had the opportunity to help immediately, could not do it, coach had to make a decision based on now and in the future.

  • Diesel

    What up Gleas?

  • Plane1972

Pardon me…you only meant to say mostly Crean’s fault. My humble apologies. I’m sure Crean has no desire to make a 6’9″ specimen with a jumpshot a priority in his coaching schemes. Take a nap, dude. You’re cranky.

  • Anonymous

I think he is an important get because we do not have good depth in the frontcourt. TP is our only respectable defender and if we want to get significantly better by next year I think improving post defense is at the top of the list.

  • Diesel

Easy on the Diesel, it may not look like I’m looking at you, but I am.

  • Anonymous

Wrong! If you actually compare their stats through their sophomore years you would see that Elston’s are better. Btw Zoubek was 7’1/250.

  • Plane1972

Zadok, Zoubek. Tomato, tomato. You apparently knew quite a bit about him. Just messin’ with you, Loop.

  • N71

    due to the lazy eye?

  • Diesel

I agree here. It not like we needed an extra scholly either. We had one to spare even with Guy taking a spot. It will be interesting to see what Bawa’s stats are next season, but I wouldn’t expect anything beyond 5 and 5 even with the redshirt and the league he is in.

  • Anonymous

    Is that sourced?

  • Diesel

The program was not and still is not in any position to be redshirting players.

  • Anonymous

Internet rumors are great…first internet fans start questioning PJ because he’s been injured. Then it turned into questions of whether he should go to prep school for a year. Now “he might even reclassify”. Did I miss something?

  • Diesel

    This man speaks the truth.

  • Diesel

Marsh, this is more like doing your due diligence. CTC will leave no rock unturned when it comes to recruiting.

  • Diesel

+ Connection would be they are all international

+ AJ Moye played some pretty mean post defense

+ Cody wears neither tape or ankle braces, probably going to happen

+ One draft projection I saw had Derrick Williams at #1

  • Diesel

I prefer to call it a strabismus

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

Not much Diesel, I’m good. You?

I know I didn’t post here as much this season, but I definitely check the site multiple time a day. Still love ITH as always!!

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for adding an ’11, although I think CTC has to be positive he’d contribute next season. We can’t afford to waste a scholly on someone that can’t see the court next season. Not necessarily a stud, but a contributor.

  • hgdownunder

Elston was an Indiana All Star and if he had gone to Butler he would have been the highest recruit Stevens ever snared. I doubt if he would have been on the bench. And I doubt if he’d be playing as badly as he has.

  • N71

Had to Google that one and it’s actually a real thing. You’re in with that for the 2011 class assuming you can rebound, block shots, have a knife collection, and like to kick dogs & cats that are either gold or black.

  • Anonymous

    “This man speaks the truth”

  • Anonymous

His name really is “God’s Gift!” It’s a sign!

  • Anonymous

Hey! Twisted Ankle! Why don’t you just slowly back away and move on down the road. We’re not partial to your kind round here…

  • Anonymous

Rakeem Christmas came on campus for a visit a LONG time ago. So I don’t think the gameplan was to wait til the last minute.

Your previous posts all seem to assume that there are a decent amount of legit big men out there that aren’t projects. Unfortunately there aren’t many 6’8+ kids with developed skills (that’s why Sullenger/Zeller were coveted)…so projects are what you’re going to get

  • Marsh21

CTC has had plenty of time to develop a relationship with a big over the last year or so and it just seems we are reaching a bit with prospects like this one at the last minute. I don’t like the last minute grabs as CTC seems to do well with time but not at the 11th hour. This should have already been solidified but I know he was waiting on Cody first.

It all really doesn’t matter because if VJIII is still playing big minutes the ball will never get to the low post anyway. We’ll just contine to hear about this amazing midrange game he has from all the tv and radio guys.

  • Anonymous

That is really surprising given your namesake. As a freshman Ube (sp) Blab was a gangly, weak, red-headed, string-bean with no shot, except for a lay up over 6’5 high school guys. His last two years, he developed into a guy with a terrific half-hook shot and very good footwork, who could guard premier players like Sam Perkins. Most Bigs take 5 full years and totally change their game after high school. Zeller will be an exception because he is so skilled now, but his brother, Tyler at NC, has dramatically improved his game. I do give Crean credit for teaching Jordy how to dribble into traffic and not lose control from year 1 to year 2. You have to have Big men that you give the time to develop over 5 full years as well as the McDonalds All-American who can play right away.

No, I said exactly what I meant to say, that good coaches develop talent as well as recruit talent. I have been around more than a few, just at IU: Councilman, Yeagley, Bell, Billingsley, Knight, etc. A good nap is always refreshing.
