That’s A Wrap: Matt Roth

by in Commentary | March 17th, 2011

Welcome to “That’s A Wrap,” our attempt to make some sense of the 2010-11 season. Sit back. Relax. Grab some popcorn. Get your read on. Today: Matt Roth.

Final Stats (28 games): 3.4 ppg, 0.5 rpg, 0.3 apg, 38.5% FG, 88.9% FT in 8.2 minutes per game

After missing the majority of his sophomore season with a broken foot, Matt Roth returned for his junior season with hopes of returning to a regular role in the IU rotation.

But rather than cracking the rotation, Roth was relegated to mostly spot duty and cracked double digit minutes in just nine games. And while he showed the ability to take over a game from the perimeter as a freshman with 29 points against Ohio State, Roth doesn’t seem to be the same player physically after suffering the foot injury last season in Puerto Rico.

There’s no question Roth possesses the ability to contribute because of his prowess as a shooter, but the reality is that Indiana’s personnel struggled to bring his strength to the forefront this season.

The Hoosiers didn’t have a point guard that could consistently break down opponents off the dribble and help create openings for Roth. And they also lacked a post presence that could draw double teams and kick it out to the perimeter. When Kelvin Sampson recruited the Washington, Illinois native, it was with the understanding that he’d be surrounded with talent to help free him up for open looks. Three years later, that plan has yet to materialize with any regularity.

That’s A Wrap: Tom Pritchard

Welcome to “That’s A Wrap,” our attempt to make some sense of the 2010-11 season. Sit back. Relax. Grab some popcorn. Get your read on. Today: Tom Pritchard.

Final Stats (31 games): 2.5 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 0.7 apg, 59.0% FG, 34.8% FT in 18.2 minutes per game

So is it me, or was Tom Pritchard one of the most quietly impressive Hoosiers on the court this season?

Granted, his offensive game was just as stop-and-go (putting it lightly) as ever. But Pritchard was quite possibly Indiana’s most improved and most consistent defender, and a significant minority of fouls he committed this season were in covering for a teammate that had lost his mark.

We also started seeing some of the Pritchard that Tom Crean and other Hoosiers have talked about – the one with strong footwork, underrated athleticism and some actual swagger around the rim.

This rather emphatic, ridiculously surprising putback dunk not withstanding, when Pritchard was assertive and aggressive on the offensive end, his teammates fed off that energy more clearly and efficiently than perhaps anyone else on the team.

Looking back, it’s probably fair to say that, in a sense, Pritchard came out of his shell a little bit, and began to define the final product he’ll become. Though it’s hard to picture him becoming a scoring force in his senior season, it’s certainly not beyond even the adventurous imagination to see him put up nicely improved numbers next year. And as his strength has improved, so has his rebounding, a significant need for Indiana next season as well.

All of this swells up to create the potential for Pritchard to play a critical role on the 2011-12 Indiana basketball team: foil to Cody Zeller.

Decision on the horizon for Jeremy Hollowell

by in Recruiting | March 16th, 2011

Update: According to Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star, Hollowell will choose between Cincinnati, Indiana, Ohio State and Purdue.

One of the recruits that could push Indiana’s class into the top spot nationally for 2012 is Lawrence Central forward Jeremy Hollowell.

And it appears, via his Twitter, that the 6-7, top 40 junior is closing in on a decision:

The AAU season begins with the IndyBall.com Shootout in Indianapolis on April 8, although it’s unclear if Hollowell’s 17-and-under Eric Gordon All-Stars team will participate in that event, which college coaches cannot attend.

Q & A: 2011 IMG Academy forward Jamari Traylor

by in Recruiting | March 15th, 2011

Tom Crean said on Monday night that he wouldn’t mind adding another recruit to the Hoosiers’ 2011 class “if it’s the right player,” and perhaps IMG Academy (FL) forward Jamari Traylor fits that description.

Inside the Hall caught up with the 6-7 Chicago native on Tuesday evening for his thoughts on the Indiana program, what he’ll bring at the next level, where his recruitment currently stands and more. Our Q & A with Traylor, the No. 36 power forward nationally according to ESPN.com, follows:

On the recent interest from Indiana and how it came about:

“I think I was in a tournament around Atlanta. I think I played well. I don’t know how the word got out. Tom Crean sent one of his assistants to look at me. They came to one of my games and they had a thing for me, so that was it.”

On the scholarship offer from Indiana:

“One of the assistants came down and saw me, Tim Buckley, and he went and told Tom Crean. Tom Crean came down and saw me. But before he saw me, we talked on the phone and he offered me a scholarship through the phone.”

On the schools currently involved in his recruitment:

“I’m looking at Kansas, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, St. John’s also has offered me a scholarship. Mississippi State.”

On whether he’s open to new schools getting involved:

“I wouldn’t say I’m completely closed, but if a good school comes and they’ve got the right fit for me, I wouldn’t turn them down.”

On why he decided to transfer from Chicago Julian to IMG Academy:

“It was going to be a good opportunity for me. I knew I was going to get a lot of exposure, much more than I would get in Chicago because we travel the country and play some of the top teams. I knew we were going to play a lot of top teams. I also found out about the facilities. They’ve got one of the best weight rooms in the country and I knew it was going to be a good place for me.”

On how his game has improved since moving to IMG Academy:

“When I got down there, people really just called me a dunker. Now I think I’ve gotten much better on the offensive end. I think I can dribble much better, I can shoot way better. Really I’ve just got my all-around game way better.”

That’s A Wrap: Derek Elston

by in Commentary | March 15th, 2011

Welcome to “That’s A Wrap,” our attempt to make some sense of the 2010-11 season. Sit back. Relax. Grab some popcorn. Get your read on. Today: Derek Elston.

Final Stats (31 games): 4.9 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 0.3 apg, 51.2% FG, 63.6% FT in 15.5 minutes per game

First thing is first: Derek Elston did not take a leap in his sophomore season. In fact, his role even shrunk a bit.

After using enough offensive possessions (20-24 percent) to be listed as a “significant contributor” by KenPom during his freshman campaign, Elston slid back to a “role player” (16-20 percent) this year, according to KenPom.

After shooting 36.0 percent from distance in 2009-10, Elston only shot 17.6 percent (3-of-17) this season. Elston also took less field goals (151 to 125), free throws (46 to 33) and 3-point attempts (25 to 17) year over year, while also registering less rebounds (128 to 114), assists (12 to 8), steals (21 to 14) and blocks (12 to 8).

Oh, and this all came in more minutes on the floor (15.1 as a freshman compared to 15.5 this season).

So what to make of this?

Well, there are a few factors here. As far as his offensive production is concerned, the additions of Victor Oladipo and Will Sheehey, as well as Jordan Hulls taking a more active role in the offense marginalized Elston a bit.

But his defense was his Achilles heel this season.

Five questions with Bosse freshman Jaquan Lyle

by in Recruiting | March 14th, 2011

Inside the Hall had a chance to catch up with 2014 Evansville Bosse freshman Jaquan Lyle earlier this afternoon. Lyle finished his first varsity season with averages of 15.6 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game.

(You can watch HD video of Lyle against Washington from Saturday at this link.)

Here’s a transcript of what the dynamic freshman had to say about Bosse’s season, his recruitment and more:

On his accomplishments as an individual and a team his freshman season:

“The goal was to win the sectional championship and we did that. Then we made bigger goals. But I’m very happy with the way we ended.”

On what he can take from Saturday’s loss to Washington in the regional:

“I’ve got to start moving more without the ball. I didn’t move as much without the ball. But mostly, my shot wasn’t going in. My pull up jumper off the dribble, too.”

On stepping into a big role at Bosse as a freshman and whether he felt pressure:

“I kept my composure most of the year. For me, playing basketball against anybody is hard, but I just come into the game thinking I’m better than everybody. That’s just the way I am. I’m competitive like that so I just think that nobody can guard me.”

On how he’s handling the recruiting process thus far:

“My family and coaches, we talk about it all the time. I’m probably going to make my decision late sophomore or early junior year.”

On Indiana:

“It’s a good school and a good coach.”
