Zeller, Washington march on to 3A championship game

by in Recruiting | March 19th, 2011

SEYMOUR — Cody Zeller saved one of his best all-around efforts of the season for tournament time. And as a result, Zeller and the Washington Hatchets will have a chance for a second consecutive state championship next Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse.

The IU signee scored a game-high 23 points, pulled down 18 rebounds, handed out five assists and blocked five shots in a 66-48 rout of Batesville in the Class 3A Semi-state title game at the Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium.

After Batesville outscored Washington 15-9 in the second quarter to tie the game at 27 at the half, the Hatchets used a 20-11 third quarter to pull away.

The win put Washington into the Class 3A title game for the fourth time in seven seasons.

Ferrell’s 25 points, seven assists help Park Tudor return to 2A title game

by in Recruiting | March 19th, 2011

SEYMOUR — Park Tudor is going back to Conseco Fieldhouse for another shot at a state championship.

For the second consecutive year, Park Tudor knocked off Forest Park in the Class 2A Semi-state title game at the Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium in front of more than 8,000 fans.

But unlike last season, the Panthers didn’t need four overtimes to knock off the Rangers, who came into the game 25-0.

Park Tudor junior and IU commitment Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell led all scorers with 25 points and dished out seven assists in a 57-45 victory.

Ferrell did a little bit of everything in the win — he knocked down 3′s and pull up jump shots, penetrated and got to the foul line and found open teammates on the perimeter as Park Tudor exploited Forest Park’s 2-3 zone.

Report: Buckley in the mix for Northern Illinois job

by in Media | March 19th, 2011

According to a report by Scott Powers of ESPNChicago.com, Indiana assistant coach Tim Buckley is one of four coaches under consideration for the vacant head coaching job at Northern Illinois.

Indiana assistant coach Tim Buckley, Gonzaga assistant coach Ray Giacoletti, Purdue assistant coach Paul Lusk and South Dakota State head coach Scott Nagy are among the candidates Northern Illinois is considering for its men’s basketball coach, according to a source.

The Northern Illinois campus, located in DeKalb, is less than 30 miles from Aurora, where Buckley was born.

The 47-year old IU assistant is 143-139 all-time as a head coach and in 2001, led Ball State to wins over Kansas and UCLA in the Maui Invitational.

That’s A Wrap: Verdell Jones III

by in Commentary | March 18th, 2011

Welcome to “That’s A Wrap,” our attempt to make some sense of the 2010-11 season. Sit back. Relax. Grab some popcorn. Get your read on. Today: Verdell Jones III.

Final Stats (28 games): 12.5 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 3.2 apg, 44.8% FG, 67.2% FT in 28.2 minutes per game

Let’s not get this twisted: Despite all the criticism that’s often hurled at him, Verdell Jones matters.

It may not be perfect and it may not happen all the time, but save for Jordan Hulls — who only began to figure it out late in the season, and who doesn’t have Verdell’s size — he’s really the only guy on this team that has the ability to penetrate the defense and create his own shot. And if you’re able to do that it 1) opens things up for your teammates, 2) gets you higher percentage looks and 3) gets you to the line.

Further, on a team filled with what often felt like just 3-point shooters and dunkers, Verdell’s silky mid-range game was something different to throw at an opponent. On defense, Tom Crean often switched styles — junk zones, man — to give the opposition a different look and keep them off rhythm.

On offense, Jones was Indiana’s different look.

Now, of course, this comes with flaw: Jones’ turnover rate (22.4 percent), was fourth worst on the team this season, with only Bobby Capobianco (25.3 percent), Jeremiah Rivers (31.0 percent) and Daniel Moore (33.5 percent) faring worse. Jones’ 3-point shooting (29.8 percent, 17-of-57) could stand some improvement.

But he had far and away the highest assist rate on the team (25.0, next closest was Hulls at 19.2 percent), which is, in part, due to his offensive skills listed above. And outside of Christian Watford (team-high 6.5 fouls drawn per 40 minutes, team-high 140 free throws attempted), Jones was really the only Hoosier that got to the line with any regularity (a second-best 5.4 fouls drawn per 40 minutes, 116 free throws attempted), doubling that of his PG counterpart Hulls (57 free throw attempts).

This matters.

Indy HS Hoops Q & A: Jeremy Hollowell

by in Recruiting | March 17th, 2011

One of the state’s top uncommitted prospects could be off the board very soon. 2012 Lawrence Central guard/forward Jeremy Hollowell is closing in on a decision.

On Tuesday night, The 6-7 Hollowell announced via twitter that he would be making a college decision soon. Hollowell, who plays AAU basketball with the Eric Gordon All-Stars, has been a hot name for midwest schools since the end of his freshman season, drawing interest from literally dozens of schools.

On Wednesday evening I caught up with Jeremy to talk about his looming decision and more. A question and answer with Hollowell follows:

What schools are in play for your decision?

“Cincinnati, Indiana, Purdue, and Ohio State.”

Would it be fair to call those 4 schools your final four?

“Yeah, those are the four that I’ll decide between.”

How soon could your decision come?

“I wouldn’t say within the next day or two, but maybe by the time I’m on spring break. We are on spring break towards the end of March, so I could see myself deciding then. I definitely want to make my decision before the start of AAU. Our first tournament is Indy Ball. That tournament starts on April 8th.”

Why did you choose to make a decision now?

“I feel good with the decision I am going to make. It got to the point where I started to feel more and more comfortable with the schools and was ready to make my decision. I’m just ready to prepare for AAU season and try to have a big summer with my team. From there I want to come back strong for my senior year of high school, and then eventually go off to college. It will be nice to get the decision and distractions out of the way before AAU and the high school season.”
