That’s A Wrap: Will Sheehey

by in Commentary | March 25th, 2011

Welcome to “That’s A Wrap,” our attempt to make some sense of the 2010-11 season. Sit back. Relax. Grab some popcorn. Get your read on. Today: Will Sheehey.

Final Stats (32 games): 4.8 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 14 steals, 31 off. rebounds, 7 starts, 48.4 FG%

It’s probably safe to assume the expectations surrounding Will Sheehey were rather tame when the freshman forward arrived on campus last fall. The 2010 recruiting period had been somewhat quiet, and Sheehey didn’t have quite the marketable athleticism of fellow rookie Victor Oladipo. We thought.

Turns out that pot might have been called a little early. As the season progressed, Sheehey turned from energy guy off the bench to one of Indiana’s mot consistent and aggressive players at either end of the floor. He showed great strides in his defense and decision-making, and compared to his freshman counterpart looked a tad more physically ready for the college game.

And then of course, he did this:

Highlight-reel stuff for sure, but it’s important to remember the back story.

Earlier this afternoon, Jeremy Hollowell became the fifth recruit to join Indiana’s 2012 recruiting class and we’ve transcribed the Lawrence Central junior’s comments from his Thursday press conference for your covenience below:

Opening statement

“I just want to start by thanking everybody for coming out. First I want to thank God for putting me in the position I’m in, being blessed to be in the position I’m in. I want to thank my mom for everything she’s done for me. My dad, who drove a long way last night to be here with me today. I want to thank my sister and my older brother for giving me advice. All of my friends, teammates, coaches, my school. But we’re here today to figure out what college I’m going to. It’s been a long recruiting process. It’s been tough. It’s been fun though. A good experience. But I’m ready to decide and I’m pretty excited with my decision. The school I plan on attending for college will be Indiana University.”

On when he realized that Indiana was going to be his choice

“I’ve been thinking about it. I always think about it. This past week I’ve been thinking about it pretty hard and I just was going with my gut feeling. I just wanted to do what was best for me, what I thought was best for me. And it was Indiana.”

On whether he let the coaches know his decision before announcing

“Yeah, he (Tom Crean) was in yesterday to watch me work out. I called him afterwards and I told him.”

On the factors that led him to choosing Indiana and whether the other 2012 recruits played a role

“Yeah, it did. At Indiana I see something pretty amazing about to happen. And I wanted to make sure I was a part of that. I didn’t want to regret it down the line. Playing with those guys should be pretty exciting. I was real happy about it. I’ve been knowing Yogi (Ferrell) since the third grade. I played with Ron (Patterson) a couple of summers ago. I think we can do something pretty special.”

Jeremy Hollowell becomes IU’s fifth commit in 2012 class

by in Recruiting | March 24th, 2011

Jeremy Hollowell is a Hoosier.

The 6-7, 195-pound wing from Indianapolis announced that he’ll attend Indiana at a news conference today at Lawrence Central.

“At Indiana I see something pretty amazing about to happen, ” the junior wing told a group of assembled reporters. “And I wanted to make sure I was a part of that.”

Hollowell, the No. 38 player in the 2012 class according to ESPN.com, also considered Cincinnati, Ohio State and Purdue.

The versatile wing averaged 18.9 points and 7.1 rebounds in his junior season for 15-10 Lawrence Central.

“The biggest thing with him is that he’s turning the corner from prospect to player,” ESPN senior recruiting analyst Dave Telep told Inside the Hall of Hollowell. “The tools are there as a perimeter and even post up guy down the road.”

He’s the fifth commit in Tom Crean’s 2012 recruiting class, which also includes Ron Patterson (Broad Ripple), Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell (Park Tudor), Hanner Perea (LaPorte La Lumiere) and Peter Jurkin (United Faith Christian Academy, NC).

“This commitment solidifies them as a Top 5 class at worst and depending on what the others do could finish higher,” Telep added. “The tough part is trying to read the country and predict when Indiana has done the most work in the junior class. Right now, they’re running their own race and collecting talent.”

That’s A Wrap: Victor Oladipo

by in Commentary | March 23rd, 2011

Welcome to “That’s A Wrap,” our attempt to make some sense of the 2010-11 season. Sit back. Relax. Grab some popcorn. Get your read on. Today: Victor Oladipo.

Final Stats (32 games): 7.4 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.1 spg, 54.7% FG, 61.2% FT in 18.0 minutes per game

It was a strong freshman season for DeMatha High School product Victor Oladipo.

On a team that had lacked depth the first two seasons under Tom Crean, Oladipo was often instant energy off the bench — though he started a fair amount of games for the Hoosiers as well. And on a team that had also been lacking an athletic punch, a guy that could really throw down, Oladipo’s penchant for breakaway dunks off steals was a welcomed change. In fact, Oladipo’s steal percentage (3.6) ranked him 86th in the nation.

For not playing down on the block, the freshman was also a terrific offensive rebounder, racking up the highest offensive rebounding percentage (11.0) on the entire team. Per 40 minutes, Oladipo also drew the most fouls on the team (5.1) outside of Christian Watford (6.5) and Verdell Jones (5.4) by using his athleticism to cut the hoop and draw contact.

In games where the Hoosiers couldn’t seem to get anything going and lacked energy, it was sometimes Vic’s offensive rebounding and spunk that kept things going.

He’s just a fun player to watch.

Of course, where Oladipo sometimes got into trouble was going for the highlight over the fundamental play, the flash over just getting the job done right. And though he get to the line a good amount, he only converted 61.2 percent of the time which was second worst of IU players getting regular minutes. (Tom Pritchard brought up the rear at 34.8 percent.)

Hollowell decision won’t determine Harris’ future

by in Recruiting | March 22nd, 2011

(Photo via Jamie Owens of J. Scott Sports)

His friend Jeremy Hollowell’s college recruitment appears to be headed toward its end, but Gary Harris says he’s still focused on “which school’s going to be the best place for me.”

Speaking to Inside the Hall on Monday night, the Hamilton Southeastern junior guard said he’s been impressed with the future being built in Bloomington, and he considers IU one of his “heavy hitters” right now. Still, the 6-foot-4 guard said he’s taking his time, an approach he’s been consistent in taking throughout his recruitment.

“They’re gonna have a pretty good team here pretty soon,” Harris said of Indiana. “Of course I’m gonna look at it.”

Hamilton Southeastern’s season ended with a 83-72 loss to North Central in the regional final at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Royals finished 20-4 on the season, and their only other losses to teams in Indiana were a two-point defeat against North Central in December, and a four-point loss at home to Pike on Feb. 15.
