Earlier this afternoon, Jeremy Hollowell became the fifth recruit to join Indiana’s 2012 recruiting class and we’ve transcribed the Lawrence Central junior’s comments from his Thursday press conference for your covenience below:

Opening statement

“I just want to start by thanking everybody for coming out. First I want to thank God for putting me in the position I’m in, being blessed to be in the position I’m in. I want to thank my mom for everything she’s done for me. My dad, who drove a long way last night to be here with me today. I want to thank my sister and my older brother for giving me advice. All of my friends, teammates, coaches, my school. But we’re here today to figure out what college I’m going to. It’s been a long recruiting process. It’s been tough. It’s been fun though. A good experience. But I’m ready to decide and I’m pretty excited with my decision. The school I plan on attending for college will be Indiana University.”

On when he realized that Indiana was going to be his choice

“I’ve been thinking about it. I always think about it. This past week I’ve been thinking about it pretty hard and I just was going with my gut feeling. I just wanted to do what was best for me, what I thought was best for me. And it was Indiana.”

On whether he let the coaches know his decision before announcing

“Yeah, he (Tom Crean) was in yesterday to watch me work out. I called him afterwards and I told him.”

On the factors that led him to choosing Indiana and whether the other 2012 recruits played a role

“Yeah, it did. At Indiana I see something pretty amazing about to happen. And I wanted to make sure I was a part of that. I didn’t want to regret it down the line. Playing with those guys should be pretty exciting. I was real happy about it. I’ve been knowing Yogi (Ferrell) since the third grade. I played with Ron (Patterson) a couple of summers ago. I think we can do something pretty special.”

On how close it was with the other schools that recruited him

“It started out Ohio State, kind of backed off a little bit, rethought it.  I was still kind of young so I didn’t really take it all in. Purdue picked up, talking to Terone (Johnson) a lot, he really wanted me to come there but I had to do what was best for me.”

On why he chose to make his decision before AAU began

“I wanted to go into AAU knowing where I was going and just focus on playing basketball and winning games and not have to stress about it, not have to worry about it. Just knowing where I’m going and preparing for that time when the time comes.”

On what Coach Crean said to hit a chord with him in his recruitment

“Just how hard he recruited me. How he said he would use me in different positions and things like that. He made me feel like a real priority to him. I think that was the biggest thing – how hard he recruited me and him being the head coach that was a big factor in showing that he really wanted me there.”

On how Indiana plans to use him and how he’ll fit in the system

“He compared me to Christian Watford. Playing multiple positions, guarding different positions. Being able to fill in any spot that he would need me to. Helping out with all of the little things – rebounding, scoring, a little bit of everything.”

On whether the proximity from Indianapolis to Bloomington was a factor

“Yeah, it was important. I kinda get home sick at AAU tournaments, so just imagining being in college without my mom being there without my family being there. I think I should stay close to home for her to be able to come to the games and my family to be here to support me.”

On how well he knows the other 2012 recruits and how they’ll complement each other

“I’ve been knowing Yogi for a while. Me and Ron became pretty friends playing AAU together. Hanner (Perea) and Peter (Jurkin) I know through AAU. I think we can do something real special. We’re all don’t really play the same position. I think we can all work together and come together as a team.”

On how important it was for Indiana to have other good players in place before he decided

“That helps a lot showing all the great players I would be surrounded by playing with, all the great players that’s there can really turn a program around.”

On whether it became more attractive as Indiana continued to land additional recruits

“Yeah, it really helped seeing the guys that were going there, knowing they were pretty good players. They’re all high-major players and it was exciting for me seeing who I’d be able to play with and things we can accomplish.”

On when he knew it was Indiana

“I’ve been kinda knowing for a while. That was just my gut feeling. The school I thought would be best for me. I would look at another school and just always think about IU. I feel like if I went there (another school) I would regret it in the long run. So I went with what I thought was best for me. I’m just leaving it up to me now for me to work hard and do what I have to do.”

On whether he got tired of people encouraging him to go to different schools via social media outlets like Facebook or Twitter

“I did kind of get tired of it, but you just have to deal with it. I said I have to deal with it. I just tried to ignore it and continue to work hard and do what I have to do.”

On what he needs to improve on before arriving in Bloomington

“I need to get stronger, faster, playing every possession hard. Being more aggressive. My ball handling, my foot work, playing defense. Pretty much to prepare for that next level so I’ll be ready.”

On whether he’ll become a recruiter like Ron Patterson or Yogi Ferrell and who he would recruit

“We all know that I’m going to go after Gary Harris pretty hard. He knows that. We’re good friends. I think if we get him we’ll really be something special. He knows I’m going to come after him hard. We’ve been talking about it but it’s still his decision and I’ll leave it up to him but I want to get my two cents in and hope he makes the best decision.”

On how well all of the recruits can fit together

“I think it’s a good group of guys, unselfish guys who just want to win, play basketball and do some great things.”

Kids it is going to happen….Gary Harris will be a Hoosier!

“I think it’s a good group of guys, unselfish guys who just want to win, play basketball and do some great things.”

………….that’s what I want to hear

  • http://twitter.com/Infamous_German Jake

Can someone help me out with all the scholarships? If we get Harris that will be 6 people on scholarships, and we only have room for 4.

  • HoosierSmitty

Alright, I said I was satisfied with class as it was….until I read Hollowell’s comment that he’s going to go after Gary Harris for us. That’s sweet. I love hearing this stuff. Let’s get a national title sooner rather than later boys!

  • Anonymous

This team is coming to Indiana not just to play for IU, but to play for each other. You have got to be excited about that. That shows a group of kids who are pretty mature and will hopefully mesh well and play for each other. It’s those kind of teams that have success and those kind of intangibles that get you through close games.

These are the type of kids Indiana was built on and I couldn’t be happier to see us not only recruiting the top talent, but doing it the right way with the right type of kids.

  • Kelin Blab

It is one thing HoosierSmitty to tell Crean no I want to go elsewhere….but can Gary Harris tell Crean, Yogi, Cody, Buss, and now Hollowell no?

  • Kelin Blab

Interesting read from Kyle Neddenrip from the Indy Star how PU wanted to offer but didn’t have the schollys. Different from Crean’s method of the scholarship situation will work itself out and make the offer. Good job Matt Painter, you going to try the same thing with Gary Harris?

As Alex always says….If Gary Harris wants to come to IU there WILL BE a scholarship.

  • Dannon Brown

I have already booked my tickets to the Final Four in Dallas!!! I have been pretty confident since day one that Coach Tom Crean is our guy. He is going to bring in the right guys to bring this program back to its glory. It has been a tough 3 years, but with the recruits that have signed over the last 12 months it has been the progression i personally expected to see. This is another great big nail in the coffin of the Nay sayers!!! Welcome to Hoosier Nation Jeremy, we welcome you with open arms!!

  • Jon

notice the IU hoodie was in FRONT

Harris has a Purdue offer, so doesn’t appear he’s going to try the same approach.

    Ain’t life grand?

Our season’s been over for two weeks.

We lost our last 9 games.

We only won 3 conference games.

And we’re still excited and talking about our team.

    It’s Indiana.

  • Anonymous

    welcome to the Hoosier family!!

  • Anonymous

Well that is the question- someone(s) will have to go. Most speculation focuses on front-court players.

  • BFowler

First, congratulations Jeremy, and welcome to the family.

Second, thanks Austin Etherington. It is your recruitment of Cody (and Cody begat Yogi, and Yogi begat Hanner, and so on) that started this windfall of fantastic news on an otherwise dismal 2010-2011.

Finally, The Big Domino, Peter Jurkin (Sallad, your credit goes here), has a full compliment of players around him to make a very complete team come 2013.

  • Marsh21

This is crazy… Recruiting groups normally don’t happen like this where they all know each other. Wow…………………………

If they pull Harris and can stick together we will be a force.

    Thank you JH!!!!!!

  • Kelin Blab

Wow and it was just 60 degree’s here. Can’t do the snow again

  • M28togo

What’s the chance of getting A.J. Hammons
    F

  • INUnivHoosier

Agreed. It is nice that we can disagree and get at each other without being a bunch of idiots. Kudos to ITH staff for squashing the stupid stuff quickly and setting the tone.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

Jurkin will be much, much better than what people think. All he needs to do is defend, block shots, rebound, and run the floor and he can do all those things.

I was on Jurkin very early saying we needed to recruit him like he was the hottest commodity in the country and low and behold Coach Crean signed him up first! I’m really glad coach listened closely to what I had to say last year (just kidding). But, in all seriousness, PJ is going to be a solid 7 footer. He won’t score a ton but he won’t have to. At that point we’ll have the type team where it will actually be beneficial to have a guy on the floor who doesn’t have to get a ton of touches and scoring opportunities. He’ll play his role and block shots, rebound, get fast break opportunities, and compliment Zeller.

  • JerryCT

I try to enjoy every day I have left on earth ………….. but last night when I finally closed my eyes ………………I began to feel how cool it would be to wake up in the morning and have it be November 2012 .

I also wonder how we keep this class focused on the mission we have for them for 1 1/2 years

  • deedubbadoo

I’ve heard talk of Jurkin going to prep for a year, and being a 2013 guy. I wonder if there is any truth to that.

  • millzy32

Said it before and I’ll say it again. Thanks for playing at IU guys it was real but IU Bball isn’t a charity and you haven’t proven that you meet the requirements and good luck to you at a MAC school. Tough but needs to happen. Can’t say it enough. Not a charity, not a charity, not a charity. This is Indiana. Lets start acting like it.

  • millzy32

I may just be snake bitten by Mo but the whole stress fracture thing really scares me with PJ. I hope he has a full recovery and can become the best player that he can be which I feel will be a really solid center for us. As you say he doesn’t need to score we have scorers he needs to rebound and put fear into opposing players coming down the lane.

  • millzy32

Only five guys allowed on the court at one time. Can you imagine how intense the practices will be trying to be one of those lucky five who get to start the game. Practice intensity going against this high level of competition day in and day out will be a huge advantage for us. Keeping all of them happy will be a challenge but we’ll cross that bridge when we need to do so.

  • JerryCT

You clearly have not yet tangled w Millared .

We all liked him better when he was a nun. We were just getting our rusty shovels and garden weeders ready to perform the gender change when he went back to his old self.

  • Danwise

I think the way it will work out is that by 2012 ( assuming Crean doesnt sign anyone for 2011) We will lose Pritchard, Jones, Roth, and Moore, we also never had Guy and Rivers just graduated so by 2012 we’ll have 8 scholarship players not including the 5 coming in which would give us 13 total…you get twelve scholarships, you can oversign by one so we’re good. I think Crean also anticipates that someone will leave the program…ideally Capo or Elston

  • millzy32

On a side note: Anyone still questioning the size of Yogi Ferrell need look no further than Erving Walker from Florida to see what a little guy can do in a big situation. I imagine Yogi being a very similar player if not a little better than Walker and even a little taller.

  • Anonymous

Did you guys see Lyles and Blackmon Jr were among the 24 players chosen for the US u16 developmental bball team? Apparently that number will come down to 12 for the u16 national team

  • Plane1972

I thought the same thing, walt. Unselfishness is the key. I’ve been a little reluctant thinking about Crean going after another top-flight talent in Harris just because there is only one ball on the court. But, if these guys can put their egos aside and not care who gets the credit in different situations, then this is sounding better by the moment.

2012 Team: CWat, Mo, JH, VO, WS, CZ, PJ, Yogi, JHolla, Buss, HP, and Gary Harris as a realistic possibility.

If that doesn’t get you excited, you aren’t a Hoosier fan. This is unreal. Calipari doesn’t have anything on Crean. There is not a team that can go that deep. I know a lot are freshmen but they will have incoming chemistry… and let’s not underestimate their willingness to do the work and buy into the system. I could write about this for an hour… but I won’t

    GO HOOSIERS!!!!

  • Anonymous

P.S. The “Fab Five” documentary might have been the best recruiting tool IU has ever had. Just sayin’.

  • Anonymous

    Don’t forget Etherington

  • stonaroni

AE will be playing more than VO and WS. Someone will have to shoot 3′s at a good clip.

  • RobD

i thought hanner committed before yogi.

  • Anonymous

We’ve got a couple who can hit 3s. We need guys to play good D. VO is probably our best. I think it may be difficult to get him off the floor if he is playing good D over the next couple years.

  • http://twitter.com/williamsteach M. Williams

Correct domino order is Etherington, Jurkin, Patterson, Perea, Zeller, Yogi and then Hollowell.

  • BFowler

Well, I was just saying, without my history in exact order, that Austin started it all then talked about getting Cody, Cody spoke about getting Yogi, then so on….so I put a name in the wrong place.

  • InTheMtns

Danwise, Division I men’s basketball programs get 13 scholarships and can oversign by one. We currently have 14 scholarship players lined up for 2012. The oversign allows for an additional offer but not an additional scholarship. Before the fall of 2012, we’ll have to reduce the number of players on scholarship to 13.

  • InTheMtns

Let’s hope that best defense is the bottom line and deciding factor on who those lucky five who get to start the game are.

  • MillaRed

Sitting here minding my own business. Feelings are hurt. I am a victim.

  • So_Cal_Hoosier

    Agreed. Talk about perfect timing

  • Anonymous

I hate the man but Calipari has #’s 2,3,8 and 15 recruits coming in next year.

  • Kelin Blab

Some of them are planning on doing that Op Tommy this summer

  • Kelin Blab

A sobering thought in Crean’s recruiting. When you look at what he had to overcome to get this type of class in from 2011 to 2014 it is pretty sobering….

+ 3 straight non winning seasons
+ The success of Butler and PU
    + Hartman Hummel relationship
+ Hollowell interest in OSU following Evan Turners run
+ Butler pursuing Cody right after a title run
+ Yogi’s dad saying IU isn’t recruiting his son enough
+ Constant rejection from Selby, Teague, Irving
    + Kelvin Sampson

  • Anonymous

True, but IU won’t have to vacate the wins earned with this class unlike Kentucky for the majority of the Calipari era!

All the guys that cheat are great recruiters.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

That would not be a bad thing because I don’t think he would get a ton of playing time his freshman season anyway, but he will develop into a really, really solid center.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I have a sneaky suspicion that these guys are all focused on it already on their own. Think about this:

Austin committed after a 6 win season! Peter, Buss, PJ, and Yogi all committed after a 10 win season #2. Hollowell committed after a 12 win season #3. Now, they’re talking about heavily recruiting another 5-star talent after that said 12 win season.

It seems to me that these kids are in cahoots and have all decided that THEY are going to bring IU back to elite status and try to hang banner number six. There’s NO WAY they are coming because they already saw the program rising from the ashes or because they just love the system and opportunity to be seen on national television game after game because the system is very similar to other schools and we’re not getting that kind of attention right now. I give a lot of credit to CTC because he obviously has an appeal for recruits today, but I get this feeling that these guys are in part recruiting themselves and each other because they are IU guys and want to do something special.

I don’t think anyone will have to keep them focused because they have to pretty dang focused on their own to make such a commitment during a stretch of seasons that offers little more than a bleak outlook on the future without them.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I don’t think anyone who has seen Yogi is going to question his size! The kid is STRONG and isn’t as small as you’d think. He’s easily closer to 6’0″ than he is 5’9″ from what I saw.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

I don’t know what will happen, but there will certainly be a lot of options and opportunities to go offense/defense substitution.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

Those two will be the best 1-2 punch IU has had in long, LONG time! If they continue to develop at the rate they are now they will both be top 10 players in their class. It’s not often you land two top 10′s unless you are Criminalapari and handing out Lexus keys like they are hoodies.
