According to a report by Scott Powers of, Indiana assistant coach Tim Buckley is one of four coaches under consideration for the vacant head coaching job at Northern Illinois.

Indiana assistant coach Tim Buckley, Gonzaga assistant coach Ray Giacoletti, Purdue assistant coach Paul Lusk and South Dakota State head coach Scott Nagy are among the candidates Northern Illinois is considering for its men’s basketball coach, according to a source.

The Northern Illinois campus, located in DeKalb, is less than 30 miles from Aurora, where Buckley was born.

The 47-year old IU assistant is 143-139 all-time as a head coach and in 2001, led Ball State to wins over Kansas and UCLA in the Maui Invitational.

No!!! Stay here. You can leave after we win a championship. Northern Illinois is lame.

I hate to see him leave if he is our “ace” recruiter but I also think CTC needs some fresh insight into things we are doing.

Are we happy with Iowa and NU dominating us for 2 years and UM having the kind of season we had all hoped for while starting 2 FR and a Soph , 2 Jrs ?

Perhaps a change among the staff can mean a change and improvement in how we approach things

I like Coach Buckley and wish him luck with this opportunity- having assistants move to head jobs is good for successful program, and some new blood on the staff wouldn’t be so bad either . . .

Bennie had lots of interest last year and nothing materialized. I would be surprised if he moved on.

    Great point Jerry on UM.

What are the reasons UM had the kind of season they did and we had the kind of season we did? They lacked size. They lacked experience. Here might be some possibilities:

    1) Did not lose any players due to eligibility
    2) Did not lose any players to injury
    3) Led by 2 juniors in Douglas and Novak who get it the way Jordan Hulls gets it, both Indiana kids I might add
    4) More athletic, top to bottom
    5) Everyone is a threat to score at all times (ie not TP, Capo, Moore, Rivers, VO)
    6) Shot better down the stretch – in our last 13 games (beginning @ Iowa) we didn’t shoot better than 50% and 7 of those didn’t break 40%
    7) Better coached – hey, it’s a possibility, someone was going to say it
    8) Played for each other. I’m not sure I could say that about our team every game. Lack of defense, lack of energy, not working hard all the time just aren’t signs of a team that is in it for the other person and I think what makes me so excited to see all these guys from Indiana come to IU – they are going to play for each other and hold each other accountable

Not really sure what he has done seems to me the stars of 2012 said they were going to IU, nothing anywhere saying he recruited them, so I’m all for new blood.

You could probably throw in there an athletic, penetrating, dishing point guard as a major reason as well.
