2013 guard Basil Smotherman commits to Purdue

by in Recruiting | February 16th, 2011

2013 Heritage Christian guard Basil Smotherman, who had an early scholarship offer from Indiana, has committed to Matt Painter and Purdue, according to Eric Bossi of Rivals.com.

Smotherman visited Indiana this past fall for the Michigan football game and was also in attendance for Hoosier Hysteria.

ESPN.com ranks Smotherman the No. 26 prospect nationally in the 2013 class.

The 6-5, 180-pound guard also had offers from Illinois, Notre Dame and Xavier.

Here’s what Smotherman’s AAU coach, Matt Green of the Eric Gordon All-Stars, told us about his game last summer: “Basil is a perimeter threat. At any point in time he can get it going and start killing you from the outside. His mid-range game is getting a lot better.”

2014 Intro: Jaquan Lyle

by in Recruiting | February 16th, 2011

The Essentials: 6-4, 185-lb guard/wing for Evansville Bosse and Eric Gordon All-Stars

The Schools: Illinois (offer), Indiana (offer), Purdue, Texas, Virginia Tech, Xavier (offer)

The Numbers: 18.1 ppg for Bosse, which is currently 13-6.

The Quote: “Bouta do my thing against a probable future teammate (Cody Zeller)” – Jaquan Lyle on Twitter before Bosse loss to Washington in December.

The Ranking: ESPN.com lists Lyle on the ESPNU 100 Watch List for 2014.

The Coach Says: “The kid’s a talent, but right now we’re just worried more on him growing up and him being a good basketball player and maturing. If that continues, we’re going to be OK.” – Bosse head coach Shane Burkhardt to Inside the Hall on Lyle.

ITH Scouting Notes: Skilled playmaker that can excel at the point or on the wing. Excellent passer, especially in transition. Streaky shooter, but possesses the ability to go on a scoring barrage from the perimeter. Solid ball handler and defender. Very good at attacking off the dribble, but isn’t yet explosive at blowing past defenders. High basketball IQ for a freshman with a knack for making big plays.

@JohnDMercer writes: will Mo get a medical redshirt?

Alex Bozich: Tom Crean said shortly after Maurice Creek’s injury that he would petition the NCAA to get an extra year for his sophomore guard. Here’s the quote on that situation by Crean from shortly after the injury: “Because he’s basically right now played one year inside of two. I would hope that down the road we’re going to get the leniency on that, because this has been through no fault of his own.” But the rule for a medical redshirt (or hardship waiver, as it’s sometimes called) is playing in less than 30 percent of your team’s games with none coming after the second half of the season. In both seasons, Creek played in more than 30 percent of Indiana’s games and this season, he played during the second half of the season. It obviously won’t hurt to try the petition, but precedent says it’s not likely to happen.

@MicahMcVicker writes: Has anything changed regarding McGary’s status?

Alex Bozich: McGary, who told Inside the Hall back in December that he had an offer for 2011 from Indiana, has ruled out the possibility that he’ll enroll in college after this school year. It seemed like a long shot that’d he stay in the 2011 class when I spoke with him a few months back as McGary was retaking courses at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire to improve on his core GPA. Indiana is still keeping tabs on him as far as I know, but with four commitments already secured in the 2012 class, it’s not clear how he might fit into the Hoosiers’ plan for that class. Gary Harris and Jeremy Hollowell appear to be higher priorities and the scholarship situation would have to change in order for IU to take more than five recruits.

Film Session: Bombs away

by in Film Session | February 14th, 2011

After a first half where it scored half its points in the paint and only made one 3-point attempt, Michigan flipped the script and mounted it’s 22-point second half lead on the strength of a bevy of 3-point makes.

A look at Michigan’s sharpshooting barrage in the latest edition of Film Session.

NO. 1) IN TRANSITION

The Hoosiers turn the ball over on their first offensive possession of the second half, as Jordan Hulls’ pass to Tom Pritchard on a pick-and-roll runs afoul:

Zach Novak scoops up the loose ball and pushes it up the court:
