Can’t remember if I’ve said this before or not, but of all the commits, Jurkin can least afford time out with a stress fracture. It’s really a shame if any of the kids get hurt and lose development time, but he probably needs court-time more than anyone.

  • JoshuaHaltom

When it comes to recruiting it seems that there are two dominant personalities when it comes to those who follow it.

    1) “Who has comitted? I dont care about a kid who is 13 or who his top 5 schools are.”
    2) “I care about all things IU, so who is this 6th grader we have an eye on?”

After watching a miserable Friday night performance by Baker, I have officially moved from #2 to #1.

Bedford North Lawrence did not do much to stop this kid but he was repeatedly out-hustled and had a very apathetic attitude towards the game and the fact they were being killed. He never showed any initiative nor did he try and be assertive. He seemed okay to let his team get embarrassed while he was throwing cross court passes that were getting picked off left and right. Based on his stat line it seems he had a similar mindset on Saturday. I am not trying to be critical of the kids talent but I think he displayed d-2 potential/small d-1 walk on.

Anyone know anything different about him or why so many schools like IU, Xavier, Cincy are interested?

Other than dunking in the 7th grade, how’s our future Hoosier, Eron Gordon, doing? Who here thinks Bruce Weber is already on him?

  • http://www.twitter.com/GBuc12 BaseballBuc

We will have it all coming 2012.

    Shooter = Austin Etherington
    Defensive stopper = Patterson
    True Point Guard = Yogi
    Shot Blocker = Jurkin/Perea
    Slasher = Gary Harris (hopefully)
    True big man = Zeller

Great updates. Thanks for taking the time to put these together.

  • MillaRed

How good is this Blackmon kid? I cannot wait to see this kid in Bloomington. Wow.

  • GFDave

Thanks. I’ve kept the compilation of ITH reported data limited to scoring as that info is more consistently available than the other stats. Even the scoring data is partial for some kids, like McGary.

  • GFDave

I agree, Blackmon is really putting up the numbers.

A kid not to sleep on is Mark Williams. He’s got that big frame and is putting up good numbers as a Soph. Would be a nice power forward to pair with Lyles the next year.

  • N71

Patterson is also an effective scored. Future all Big Ten player.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

    Not familiar with the name.

  • Anonymous

Geez, the kid is just a sophomore. Let him mature a bit.

  • Anonymous

After the way Gordon and his family was treated by the opposing players, coaches and especially the Illannoy crowd last time he / they were there I would be absolutely stunned beyond belief if he could even get anyone in that family to even answer his call let alone talk to him or return a call for any other reason than to say WTF, don’t you or anybody associated with Illannoy ever call any of our numbers again.

  • MillaRed

What are we feeding these kids in Indiana right now? We legitimately could
field an entire team of Hoosiers and kick butt.

I would like to see Holloway commit. I think Harris is all but gone. Sadly.

  • Anonymous

I agree completely, if Harris was interested in us(as #1) I think he would at least be making more of an effort to come to games, campus, etc. and I haven’t seen it from him. I think Hollowell is making an effort to show he’s interested and with his other choice(Ohio St.) already taking a player at his position that year, I say we push hard for him. Plus, when he gets hot he can shoot lights out!

  • Anonymous

Maybe this has been covered and is evidenced by the lack of any “2011 Class” above, but are we not targeting anyone else to add to the 2011 class because of the ineligibility of Guy? I seem to recall some talk about IU giving a look at some of the remaining bigs in the 2011 recruiting class. I know that would impact the 2012 class and numbers and all that, but I thought it was at least a consideration at one point.

  • Anonymous

I really would like to see Holloway play in person a second time. I went to the HSE/LC game and Holloway just seemed so lackadaisical in his play. How he got 20 points or thereabouts in that game is beyond me. Everyone raves about him on here, but I just didn’t see it in that game, a game of some significance to both schools. I’ll have to try and get to another LC game before the season ends.

  • Anonymous

Good question. If IU continues to make strides like it has recently and carry the same improvement into the rest of the season and into next, then an addition to the 2011 class could go a long way in our tournament chances next season. I’m already thinking about how much Zeller and Etherington could really help this team. If we added a decent defensive player with them I say our chances could really go up.

  • http://www.twitter.com/GBuc12 BaseballBuc

I REALLY like Patterson’s game. Think he is well underrated.

  • http://www.twitter.com/GBuc12 BaseballBuc

The thing I love about Blackmon is that he’s so composed and mature for his age. He plays with an absolute presence on the court and isn’t scared of anyone. Also heard that he is a guy that kids love to play with because he passes. Now in High School he is going to be counted on to score, but he loves to pass. Similar to how Lebron James plays.

Is there a reason every time I reply to something, my previous comment has shown up? Not a big deal, but it must be my Google Chrome acting up. I think i’ve commented the wrong thing on a couple different threads today.

  • Diesel

Having the same issue Buc, unfortunately I was long-winded on the post that continues to show up, so a lot of deleting to do.

Also have to scroll a long ways to find the “Post as” button.

    P.J. Thompson Scouting Report:

I had the chance to see PJ play against Covenant Christian last week, here are my notes -

PJ plays very much like a system PG, he walks it up after a make or dead ball, but will push the ball quickly up the floor after a miss. Brebeuf runs a motion offense and PJ gets them in it and starts the offense. On defense, Brefeuf used a 2-2-1 press back into a 2-3 zone. When Brebeuf went man, he guarded Covenant senior Will Ray who is ultra quick and PJ did very well. He has good athleticism and hops, but with his size and stature as a freshman he had dificulty finishing at the rim, a complete opposite of what I saw in Yogi Ferrell. He takes good care of the ball as a guard, great with either hand, and nothing fancy, maybe 1-2 TOs on the night. He will look for his shot within the offense and probably shot 12-15 times on the night. He had a couple of open court steals with his quickness.

In the first quarter, PJ had two catch and shoot threes and a weave into the lane for a layup and-1 but missed the foul shot for 8 points. He missed several second quarter shots and did not score. In the 3rd, he hit an open pull-up jumper and had a nice take to the hole for 4 points. In the 4th quarter with a decent lead, Brebeuf went mostly with a delay offense to run some clock. PJ hit 1 of 2 FTs in the 4th. He finished with 13 points and was 1-3 from the FT line.

Overall, he was a nice player, but nothing yet that said he was big time D1 talent. I would wait to see how he continues to develop before accepting a scholarship offer.

  • So_Cal_Hoosier

This could be nothing more than rumor, but I heard one of the reasons why Harris likes Michigan State over IU is because they have a Nike contract instead of Adidas. Which could actually be something that really matters 17 year old kid.

Also Jeremy Hollowell tweeted on January 26th “My mom fav school is somehow becoming my fav school she make some strong points on recruiting!” And guess what his mom’s favorite school is? That’s right, IU baby.

  • So_Cal_Hoosier

Posting almost 24 ppg.. AS A FRESHMAN?! Coudn’t agree with you more

  • Anonymous

I said before that I also think that Harris has pretty much made up his mind that he is not coming to IU but will not say so because he doesn’t want to have to answer the, ” how come you didn’t go to IU “, question over and over thus IU remains on the short list for the sake of convenience. I think he, feels like he can be / wants to be, one and done and IU still will not be in a position to help him the most, in that respect, when that time comes.

  • Anonymous

A coach’s son and the son of someone that remembers what it was like to go thru the recruiting grinder. These two reasons are why I feel like he plays the game at the high level that he does and why his verbal will more than likely result in a LOI closely followed by a cream and crimson uniform.

I feel like he is also someone we will not have to worry about jumping to the next level before he is ready to. I would guess that we have him for at least 2 years unless he just comes in and sets the college bball scene on fire. I believe that is what is called a win win situation.

  • Anonymous

I’m all for adding that 250 pound, one eyed, junkyard dog,,,,..if you can find him. At this point I think the only way that happens is if someone decommits and does it in a way that doesn’t raise a caution flag otherwise you are waiting for a player to sit out 1 year and that pretty much defeats the purpose of trying to add a big for help next year. I’m not saying that there isn’t a player out there that would make that an acceptable thing to do I’m just saying that I don’t see that happening.

  • Anonymous

Nice report. Always nice to read observations on a possible future Hoosier by someone that witnessed it in person and that I consider bball knowledgeable.

And before someone reads something into that, no I don’t consider some of the other types of reports done by others to be uninformed.

  • HoosierDavey

I was at this game, too. From watching it, if I didn’t know about Baker beforehand, I wouldn’t have been able to pick him out as a big-time recruit, except for the fact that he is very athletic looking. However, he was playing a very experienced and senior-heavy team, which brought to light his youth (and the faults of his team). I wouldn’t write him off based on one game as a sophomore, but it certainly didn’t make me long for us to sign him at this point, either.

  • Anonymous

I hate to bring up painful memories, but Crean has done some JC recruiting – Guy Marc Michel and Tijan Jobe (although Jobe was more out of necessity than choice I assume)

  • Scott W.

JaType your comment here James Blackmon had 24 points last night

  • Anonymous

I went to the Warren Central – North Central game to see Devin Davis and, to a lesser extent, DSR play. DD is taller than I expected (listed at 6’6″) and is only 16 years old, so he could grow more. He’s a good athlete and ballhandler – he brought the ball up against the press several times with confidence – but seemingly not interested in banging underneath. He got in early foul trouble and sat out much of the first half. He had a flurry in the third quarter where he scored nine points in a couple minutes, including a couple coast-to-coast dribble drives and a three pointer that were pretty impressive and worth the price of admission. He fouled out with a few minutes remaining in the game on a couple very questionable calls – but that’s another story – and then sat during WC’s furious comeback that fell just short.

Overall impression – he’s already, as a sophomore, a good solid wing player and he will only get better over the next couple years. With all of the talent coming in ahead of him, especially the 2012 class, it’s easy to forget that he is also on the IU talent horizon. He will be a highly-valued recruit by the time he finishes high school, as if he isn’t already.

I don’t expect DSR to go to IU, so I was probably watching him with a more critical eye. He will be a solid D1 player somewhere, but he scores many of his points in the lane and driving to the basket, and he won’t be able to do that in college. He was the leading scorer in the game, but took lots of shots. Big strong kid, and a good player in any event.

One final note – I forgot that Greg Graham coaches Warren, and it was good to see him in action once again.

  • MillaRed

We certainly can’t win them all. We only have 5 spots on the floor. But MSU?
Ugh. I just threw ups a little in my mouth. They run the same offense etc.
Kind of a slap in the face. But as you noted, ya gotta think like a 17 year
old. Hasn’t he seen CTC pimping that sweet Adidas gear? Where can I find
    that overpriced stuff anyway?

I will take Hollowell all day. Seems to be a good kid. Will round out that
    class nicely.

  • Aceman_Mujezinovic_07

Maybe he’ll eat a lot and get very little exercise and put on some weight? HA

  • Kelin Blab

Buddy of mine just coached against him. Says he is almost a clone of his brother. Very strong already, has flirted with some 40pt games this year. Team undefeated and he can really get to the basket efficiently.

  • Kelin Blab

Kids don’t believe the Harris MSU stuff. It was the same story last year and Harris is following the Cody Zeller path to recruiting. Say nothing just let it play out. Our advantage with Harris has increased given those he will be surround with…we are in good shape.

  • MillaRed

Guys if Pritchard continues to do what he is capable of the need for this 2011 big man isn’t as important IMO. He is the nasty thorn in your side when playing at this level.

When he was disappearing I agree the need was there. But with what I have seen in the last month, he is the perfect compliment to Cody. Let’s save the scholly for a 2012 JUCO or other big recruit.

  • MillaRed

Thanks man good stuff. You too Diesel.

  • MillaRed

Kelin makes a good point. How confident were we with Cody choosing IU? I can’t say I feel worse or better off with Harris.

With that being said, if he chooses MSU, I will promptly egg Kelin’s house for getting my hopes up.

  • MillaRed

My new Jerry has-to-love-it improved Tommy Pritchard 2011 Indiana Hoosiers starting line-up sponsored by Wheaties.

    PG – Jordy
SG – Mo (I am talking the 150% healthy MO, no exceptions)
    SF – CWat
    PF – CZ
    C- Pritch

Big Ten 6th Man of the Year – Verdell takes on the challenge of being the #1 option off the bench for the betterment of the team. So the second unit –

    PG – VJ
    SG – VO
SF – Sheehey (extra year in the gym prepares Will to guard bigger guys)
SF – AE ( yes it is a smaller lineup)
    C- Elston

Roth continues in his role of instant offense, zone breaker and guard depth due to injury. Does Jeff Howard make enough strides to contribute? I hope so.

Bobby and Daniel are finishing the games out of reach.

  • Kelin Blab

It would be tough for Crean to go back to VJ in the starting lineup now and I honestly think VJ coming off the bench will be even better for him and the team. Especially coming in with that second group. I remember earlier in the year the bad stats we have had, have gone away with better defenders in the starting lineup and guys who move more to get open.

  • Anonymous

Love Pritchard too. He does all the tough stuff and plays hard all the time. Hope his free throw touch gets better :)

  • MillaRed

Kelin I think realistically Mo may be off the bench with VJ starting. But VJ
or Jordy have to be on the floor at PG so that keeps one of them on the
floor with our 2nd group. We don’t have a 3rd PG. I think Verdell would
shine in that 6th man role.

We cannot give Mo a starting nod solely based on what he did as a FR. He
needs to earn it. And oh boy I hope he gets it back.

I still think a big is needed for more depth. Just not sure Bobby can hack
it. Sorry I am being honest. If he can then its a bonus. But is there one
out there worth having? That can do better than Bobby? Probably not.

  • MillaRed

Man that free throw is a grenade. It has to be mental. He shows a soft touch
around the rim. Get the darn thing a little airborne Tommy! Good grief.

  • HoosierFromCT

    love it.

  • HoosierFromCT

I’m loving the fact that Buss is being totally overlooked by some of these recruiting sites. The guy is a stud and just based on his highlight reels, I feel like he plays with a chip on his shoulder. I’m just gonna say this once but the Hoosier Hysteria Dunk contest, VO vs Buss, that’s going to be fun to witness.

  • dfitz

Get JR to show him how to improve by 30% in one season!

  • Kelin Blab

Bobby has the “body” but just doesn’t know how to use it to his advantage. He is built like pritch but Tom is more bouncy…to quote VJ. That guy who can go and play above the rim in the interior is needed….similar to what Will brings from the wing spot. Speaking of Will, what a find he has been and if he gets a better handle he will be a stud.
