The Minute After: South Carolina State

by in The Minute After | December 19th, 2010

Notes on a 102-60 win against the Hey Bulldogs:

Another home non-conference game, another dominant performance. We know the drill by now.

Sure, it wasn’t a complete cakewalk. South Carolina State came out with more intensity than the Hoosiers. Indiana also hit a stretch in the early first half where it couldn’t buy a bucket — despite getting some good looks — and were letting the Bulldogs get some easy buckets. They actually snagged a 27-20 lead at the 7:59 mark in the first half, but the Hoosiers started to connect, were grabbing offensive rebounds when they weren’t and getting after it a bit more as they finished out the half on a 23-8 run to take a 43-35 lead into half.

The second half was an offensive clinic as Indiana scored a whopping 59 points on 61.1 percent shooting from the field (21-of-31), 66.7 percent from three (4-of-6) and 81.3 percent from the line (13-of-16).

Matt Roth built off his Friday night performance, scoring a season-high 14 points on the back of 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point land. If he can continue a return to his sharpshooting ways, this team will have one more deep threat teams will have to account for. Christian Watford continues to be a steady offense force, totaling 22 points (7-of-14 from the field, 2-of-4 from three and a perfect 6-of-6 from the line).

We probably don’t make enough of a deal out of his ability to get to the line. He’s currently hit the most free throws out of anyone in the Big Ten, and is connecting at a very strong 84.6 percent clip. Elite scorers get to the line and convert.

Evansville Bosse coach reacts to Jaquan Lyle’s tweet

by in Recruiting | December 18th, 2010

Update: Lyle’s Twitter account has been deleted.

EVANSVILLE — Did Evansville Bosse freshman Jaquan Lyle tip off future plans for a commitment to Indiana via Twitter?

That’s what a reporter asked Bosse coach Shane Burkhart following his team’s 79-71 loss to Washington on Friday night. The tweet, shown below, suggests the 14-year old Lyle could be favoring the Hoosiers at the early stages of his recruitment:

Lyle, who finished with 16 points and is not yet speaking to the media, already has scholarship offers from Indiana and Xavier.

Here was Burkhart’s response after he was asked about Lyle’s tweet: “I don’t know. I don’t. Jaquan is a practical joker. He loves to joke.”

Indiana already has two commitments for its 2014 recruiting class — Ft. Wayne Luers guard James Blackmon Jr. and Indianapolis Tech forward Trey Lyles.

Video: Zeller reacts to 79-71 win over Evansville Bosse

EVANSVILLE — Bosse coach Shane Burkhart spoke with no reservation in his praise for Cody Zeller following his team’s 79-71 loss to Washington on Friday night.

Despite scouting the 6-10 IU signee three different times, Burkhart and the Bulldogs had no answer for Zeller, who scored a game-high 27 points and pulled down 20 rebounds.

The Bosse coach called the effort “phenomenal.”

“How can you stop him?” Burkhart said. “You can’t. If you go to him and he’s 15-feet away, he can see over everybody. At the same time, we go and double team him and he turns around and gets an open look for somebody else.”

Zeller, who missed a stretch of nearly six minutes in the second half with four fouls, displayed the versatility that’s helped him blossom into one of the nation’s best players.

He drew contact and went to the line 17 times, hitting 13 attempts. He spun baseline for a two-handed dunk. He knocked down a few looks from the perimeter. And he even pitched in with ball handling duties late when Bosse turned up the full court pressure.

A time for change

by in Commentary | December 17th, 2010

BLOOMINGTON – What was supposed to happen went down smoothly.

The Hoosiers did with SIU-Edwardsville (hereafter referred to as SIUE) exactly what the Hoosiers were supposed to do with SIU-Edwardsville. (OK, my bad. Now hereafter referred to as SIUE. I will not sacrifice cadence.)

Indiana shot just one more field goal than their opponent, but made 15 more. The final score, 88-54, was hardly indicative of the gulf between these two teams. The 24-0 start to the game was still missing a little something, but it will do.

Much has been made of Indiana’s 2010 non-conference schedule, which has gotten Indiana to 8-2 on the back of eight wins against non-BCS conference opponents and two losses against BCS conference opponents.

Now, let’s dispense with the idea that the schedule was poorly drawn up.

The Boston College game might have been avoidable with another tough road test before it, but then Indiana could just as easily have lost that game, so then what’s the point?

And Kentucky amounted to one of the closest, if not the closest, 19-point losses you’ll ever see. Indiana played the Wildcats tough for 30-plus minutes and then just lost their steam and their shot – especially at Rupp Arena, there’s really no shame in that.

In truth, the schedule to this point has probably been built of the need for the Hoosiers to achieve the ever-ambiguous, intangible goal of “learning how to win.” It’s popular coach-speak, even more popular among those with young teams. No team could have needed such a lesson more.

There were other lessons, as well.

The Minute After: SIU-Edwardsville

by in The Minute After | December 17th, 2010

Thoughts on a 88-54 win over SIU-Edwardsville:

When you win by 30-plus and your opponent doesn’t hit a field goal until the 7:05 mark in the first half — which, yeesh — sometimes there’s not much to say.

A dominant win is a dominant win.

But there were a few Hoosiers given more opportunity to shine this evening, and hopefully they gained a little confidence heading into this next stretch, where, including tonight, Indiana will play four games in the seven days.

A quick look:

+ Derek Elston blazed out to a quick 10 points to start the game, and finished with a season-high 14 (5-of-8 from the field, 1-of-2 from three, 1-of-1 from the line) to go along with five rebounds in 19 minutes of play. He also made a couple nice passes.

Good to see. When he gets the minutes, he’s shown he can produce.

With the Hoosiers often struggling to get scoring production out of the frontline, hopefully Elston can build on tonight’s performance.

+ Matt Roth played a season-high 20 minutes and though he didn’t get a ton of looks, he converted on his opportunities (1-of-1 from the field, 1-of-1 from three, 2-of-2 from the line).

This team likes the 3-point shot, and it’s Roth’s strength. With the amount of fouls the Hoosiers often rack up, his name may be called at some point this season, so getting some game experience tonight is a plus.
