Jaquan Lyle one of the best in Indiana’s 2014 class

by in Recruiting | December 21st, 2010

A small group of reporters huddled outside the Evansville Bosse locker room following the Bulldogs’ 79-71 loss to Washington on Friday.

We were there to try and speak with Bosse’s heralded freshman Jaquan Lyle, who picked up a scholarship offer from Indiana and is drawing attention from a bevy of high major schools.

But as our conversation with Bosse coach Shane Burkhart drew to a conclusion and a reporter from the Illinois’ Rivals site asked about his star freshman’s media availability, it became clear that a conversation with Lyle was off limits.

“Nope, not gonna happen. Sorry. He’s 14, man,” Burkhart said.

Credit Burkhart for not further feeding the growing hype surrounding Lyle.

“He’s 14 years old,” the Bosse coach explained. “And we’ve got so many things we’ve got to do to keep his head above water. We’re not really concentrating so much on the basketball stuff, we’re concentrating on trying to keep people away. We’re trying to get him to a point where he is what he is to grow up.”

The natural talent Lyle possesses is clear from the moment he steps on the floor. Friday was Lyle’s lowest point total (16) in four games and the 6-4 wing struggled until late, when he hit three consecutive 3-pointers with Cody Zeller on the bench.

“As a freshman in four games, I don’t know if you can ask much more than that,” Burkhart said. “He’s meeting the call. He just struggles a little bit at the point of still learning the basics of some of the game.”

The strength of Lyle’s game is his versatility. He’s not yet explosive off the dribble, but he excels on the perimeter as a shooter and a facilitator for his teammates.

“He’s a kid that’s capable of doing a lot of stuff,” the third-year Bosse coach said. “Tonight, he saw what it was like to play against a 6-11 kid that he can’t throw through. I thought late, he was very good. I thought late, he showed exactly what type of player he was. But it took the two and a half quarters for him to get to that point. It took some calming down. He’s a phenomenal passer. And I thought tonight you kind of saw where he was as a streaky shooter, too. We’re trying to work on that with him.”

Burkhart said he’s fielded calls from Illinois, Purdue, Texas, Virginia Tech and Xavier regarding Lyle, but was only comfortable about talking specifics on a scholarship offer from one school — Indiana.

“I can’t speak of everyone that has (offered), but the one I can is IU, ” he said. “There’s a lot that have, but they want to do it face to face. They (the other schools) have (offered) through me and I have spoke to him. But it’s not out because they want to do it face to face in some meetings.”

In two games last week, Lyle was watched by Tom Crean, Bruce Weber, Chris Mack and Purdue assistant coach Paul Lusk. The attention will increase as more schools learn about the rising freshman.

“The kid’s a talent, but right now we’re just worried more on him growing up and him being a good basketball player and maturing,” Burkhart said. “If that continues, we’re going to be OK.”

Jaquan – just give us a verbal now, don’t have to stress about scouts at the games and focus on getting better everyday on the court and in the classroom.

    #1 class in 2012 and 2014. boom

  • RobD

how are we going to differentiate between lyle and lyles if we get both these guys? initials? or will all fans simply assume a first-name basis?

  • Kelin OlaHarrispo

The good thing is there are no names on the back of jerseys…..

  • GFDave

I have a lot of respect for how the coach seems to be handling all of this. He seems to know what’s best for the kid and also how to deal directly and fairly with the media. Cudos to him.

  • marcusgresham

I’m also impressed with the coach shielding him from undue attention, but I’m not sure I fully understand what he was saying about the difference in IU’s offer and other schools’. Was he kind of insinuating that only wanting to offer face-to-face is a way to kind of try to intimidate him into commiting?

  • MillaRed

I know it sounds absurd, but I truly am concerned about the fact we already have a “Lyles” committed. Put yourself in a teenagers shoes. It really could bother him a bit. Hopefully I am wrong.

All he needs to know is we have two top 15 kids in his class ready to get it done. That in itself should seal it.

  • Bleeding Crimson

I really wouldn’t worry about it. Our current recruits including “Lyles” will probably be pursauding he as well, as CTC has already done. Look what was said from the coach and himself. Actually he could be thinking about it being pretty cool and the extra attention he will get due to Lyles going early to the NBA.
I’m going out on a limb and predicting IU. More of a branch.

  • jgongora86

I hope we get this kid. With all this great success I hope people don’t get upset at Coach Crean when one of these kids decides to go elsewhere.

  • Kelin Sheeharris

I fully expect Lyles to commit to IU, maybe not anytime soon but at some point.

  • Kelin Sheeharris

Don’t be surprised the NBA goes to a two and done rule. According to the General this morning. Stern supports it and Coach K and Knight have pushed for it.

  • GFDave

    Nice Avatar.

  • MillaRed

How nice is it to actually have to worry about that? Aside from EJ it hasn’t been a real concern for a loooooooong time.

By the way, EJ went off last night. Wow.

  • MillaRed

Gee thanks Dave. Who could have inspired me? Hmmmmmmmm? No one comes to mind……..

  • GFDave

I don’t see the NBA Players Association moving that direction. In fact if there is a change, I’d bet it would go back to the old system.

  • Bleeding Crimson

Looks like you need to change again…how about Klyesheeharris?

  • MillaRed

Come on man. Let us dream for a few hours……

  • jgongora86

GFdave, the NBA Player Association is actually very weak and don’t really have that much pull in the matter. What they are looking for is better retirement compensation for their veterans, and are using this we want it to the old system as a leverage tool.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

    Wow, look at you two.

Perhaps I should do one that just says Alex Bozich instead of having my mug shot.

  • MillaRed

Well, I figured I irritate people here fairly often. So I may not want them to recognize me at a game.

The good news is GFDave inspired me.

The bad news is it took me 33 hours to create it on PowerPoint. I think I started in June.

  • JerryCT

We had 2 Grahams on the same team BUT Pat kept getting his foot hurt so they rarely played together

  • MillaRed

As far as recruiting goes, for me personally, I do not think it’s possible for Coach to upset me. Now, if you looked at a few of my posts this time last year……well….let’s not go there. Let’s just say I owe Coach a small apology. But who could have guessed where we are right now? Unbelievable.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

I think IU was the only one that’s offered the kid directly is what he’s saying. The others have yet to have a chance to do so face to face (but have offered through the coach), which is why he didn’t want to name those schools. That’s how I interpreted what he said.

  • MillaRed

Wow! We have a Pat Graham siting! Man I haven’t thought about him for a while. Wasn’t he a major stud coming out of high school? Maybe even Mr. Basketball?

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

Some video of Lyle. No. 15 in White:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FucnW6mbeX4

  • GFDave

I’m honored to have been your inspiration.

  • GFDave

Don’t get rid of that smiling face of yours. But if you do, an interlock of your initials would be cool, imo.

  • MillaRed

I wonder how many times Bozich was called “Bozo” as a kid. Somehow I think Bozo should be in his Avatar.

  • Kelin Sheeharris

Looking at the highlights, Jaquan is a very skilled player and a very alert passer.

  • JerryCT

With this kind of love fest going on between you guys …………….. why not just take this over to Eharmony ?

( what kind of meds are taking Millared ? you have been extra nice this year . Did Santa not visit last year or something ?)

  • MillaRed

Well nice of you to show up Mr. Scrooge. I have a special Avatar I made just for you. But I cannot display it here or anywhere else on the internet without getting a fine.

  • JerryCT

Hey I like the Avatar ……….. just for the record. Why not a make a T-shirt ? ………………………………….. send one to GFDave

Pretty sure he was a McDonald’s All-American and Mr. Basketball in 1989. And is from Floyd Knobs, which is the best town name in the state.

  • Anonymous

A problem that I’d be willing to deal with when it arises.

  • vslice

Im going off of memory here but I don’t think he was a McDonalds All-Burger Boy. I think your right on with the Mr. Basketball though.

  • vslice

Why do you say this? Gut feeling or do you have some inside information that you would like to share??

  • The_Real_Assembly_Hall

Since 1983 these are the Indiana Mr Basketball award winners that played at Indiana:

    1983 Steve Alford
    1984 Delray Brooks
    1987 Jay Edwards
    1989 Pat Graham
    1990 Damon Bailey
    1997 Luke Recker
    1998 Tom Coverdale
    2000 Jared Jeffries
    2004 AJ Ratliff
    2009 Jordan Hulls

    * Sherron Wilkerson had his Mr Basketball Award revoked.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

Both he and Greg Graham were McDonald’s All-Americans in 1989:

  • MillaRed

Very nice thanks. We grabbed 1 in the 8 years between 2001 and 2008? That is just WRONG!

    Marcus:

I concur with you and Dave in being impressed with the Bosse coach doing what’s best, in the long term, for his player.

I took the comments about the offers as implying that IU is the only one that has made a face-to-face offer.

Telling a kid’s coach that you want to offer a scholarship reminds me of the middle school tactic of asking someone to find out if a girl likes you.

Maybe I am interpreting the Burkhart’s comments incorrectly.

  • Anonymous

I guess I should have read a little further down the comments.

  • Anonymous

It didn’t seem to bother Pat and Greg when they committed.

  • Anonymous

You’re right, Trey Lyles has already committed, I believe he meant Lyle…… Jaquan Lyle

  • Anonymous

I see it from both ways on the early entry to the NBA. I think though that it would be a good move for the NBA. Pesonally I pay closer attention to the NBA now since I know the names and was able to see some of the guys play. I have a feeling rookie jersey sales had to have gone up in the NBA since the one and done rule was established. Anyone know if this is true?

  • Bleeding Crimson

    JerryCT,
I know who to look for at the games now. I did see an eye-seeing dog last game, thought is was you for a second.

  • Bleeding Crimson

Right as always, I was born and raised at the foot of those hills. Many I good time. I’ve even did some work for his Folks. Very nice family and loved coach Knight.

  • Kelin Sheeharris

I know one of his good friends. Told me when he got the offer he was elated and always wanted to go to IU. Just a matter of time.

  • Anonymous

Ok so this would be best place I know to ask. Looking for actual authentic IU basketball jersey, where do I find one?

  • liveiubball

The gift shop in assembly hall has had them in the past.

  • brklynhoosier

um, think you’re missing a big one in ’07…

  • Bleeding Crimson

Ebay has IU game Used Jersey#’s for sale, Like New, buy now for $18.95.
Don’t know if it is a scam or not but just looked it up…better hurry now…
