The Minute After: Northwestern State

by in The Minute After | November 26th, 2010

Notes on a 100-66 win over Northwestern State:

At first, Northwestern State’s pressure defense, strong rebounding and ability to match IU’s energy brought some worry.

Would this be the the team’s first loss of 2010-11?

But as we’ve seen a few times so far this season, the Hoosiers weathered the first-half storm and put it well out of reach in the second half on the backs of their defense — one that led to a dominating transition offense.

For as much talk as there was about how many points the Demons were scoring this season before tonight (86 a contest), they were getting them more on the strength of their pace (75.4 possessions a game, good for third in the nation) than on their offensive efficiency (99.3, adjusted, only 180th in the nation) or effective field-goal percentage (51.2 percent, 102nd in the nation).

And the Demons are an even poorer defensive unit. Entering tonight, they were letting opponents score 106.6 points per 100 possessions (adjusted, 290th in the country) and giving up an effective field-goal percentage of 55.5 percent, which ranks near the bottom of all Division I at 313th in the nation.

If you want to know how IU got to the century mark for the first time in the Tom Crean era, start there.

This isn’t to say the Hoosiers’ effort should be discounted. It was a strong, balanced performance on both sides of the ball. They got it done tonight. No doubt. They’ve been getting it done all season, and should take much confidence and pride in their performance thus far for a squad that hasn’t tasted a lot of success the last two seasons. 6-0 is a great start for the  program and for a fanbase starving for success.

But it’s time for a test.

This team has proven they can discard with the less talented, smaller schools in the early non-conference slate inside Assembly Hall.

But what will happen against a larger conference opponent on the road? We’ll find out against Boston College on Wednesday night in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge.

What will happen on the road against a rival ranked in the top 10 with NBA-ready talent? We’ll find out on Dec. 11 against Kentucky.

These next two weeks could either see the Hoosiers humbled in defeat or emerge as one of the biggest surprises of this early college basketball season.

Whatever the future holds, this team’s near past has shown sizable signs of improvement on both sides of the ball. There’s reason for optimism, regardless of the opponents’ skill level.

Yes folks, it’s true: There’s not only optimism from Crean’s recent/stellar in-state recruiting run, but optimism also because of how IU has taken care of business on the court in the early goings of 2010-11.

Just know better competition lies ahead.

Just watched the DVR from the 830am reshowing (yes I also streamed it to my 50” last night with about 10 other IU fans).

The thing I noticed watching this game again was the Will Sheehey is becoming one of my favorite players. I hate using the term ‘energy’ guy but he really helps this team. He had 10 and 7 last night in 13 minutes. He causes turnovers, gets loose balls, rebounds, runs the break, list goes on. Austin Etherington will have a hard time seeing the floor next year. This guy is legit.

I also totally see what Jerrys talking about CTC has changed a bit, his demeanor and coaching style. I love how he is playing a stable linuep and rotation is also steady. I really love how Capo gets 8 minutes and Elston 18 – he is establishing himself as the clear sixth man on this team with VO and Sheehey right behind.

Two stats that scare me for big ten are 280th in nation in FTA/FGA and 285 in TO% which alex already pointed out.

It has become obvious that VJ is one of the team leaders. He does make up for some of his turnovers, but there is going to be some games where just one lost possession could mean the game. You cannot take him off the floor, but he needs to cut down on the turnovers and careless mistakes if this team wants to make a run to the NIT or even the tournament this year. Also, he is not a very good defensive player and several times last night I saw him lazily jogging behind everyone back on defense. He needs to pick it up to help this team get somewhere in March.

  • http://www.facebook.com/srhise Sean Hise

FTA/FGA Defense meaning people get to the line on us. To me shows we lack size.

  • Anonymous

Instead of trying to bring the house down with a put back dunk, I would like to see him get the for sure basket by putting it back off the glass, because the missed a few last night. Other than that, I completely agree.

  • JerryCT

Wow ! If Elston could only screen and play D you might have something here

  • Kelin OlaHarrispo

I agree Jordy is what he is a very very good shooter and I will take that ONE dimension any day of the week. He is not a great rebounder or asst guy, but he is a good floor leader and a great shooter….so lets roll with it.

  • JerryCT

My answer is another question that bugs me and I love Jones.

Why is it VJ gets points but the team falls behind …….. not once in awhile but every game……………against inferior teams ?

I feel the answer lies in a combination of :

    1) turnovers that are not just bad luck on a play
    2) weaker defense to begin the game ( not last night however )
    3) consuming the ball resulting in a nearly one dimensional and defendable offense in the half court

Of course he gets points because he seeks them on every trip ……. still ………we fall behind until the other players get into the action ………… players who are not 1) thru 3) above

  • MillaRed

I agree Aceman. Most of Verdell’s TOs can be easily avoided. He just throws lazy passes into the ocean. Needs more focus. Really his only downfall but man, the good teams will turn those into points every time. Could cost us in a close game.

He does, however, have one of the best pull up jumpers in college basketball. He’s automatic from 12 feet.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Okay, his open court dunk attempt was ill-advised. His under the basket attempt at the reverse dunk was ill-advised. Both of those should have just been layups, but the put-back dunk attempt was a good play and I watched the replay of the game again this morning and rewinded that play and a defender hit him right in the wrist and dislodged the ball. It should have been a foul and two free throws or a dunk if he hadn’t have been hit!

  • MillaRed

I know its pretty obvious, but with starter’s minutes that is nearly a quadruple double. The kid will be a stat stuffer for 4 years. Great player to have.

I loved it in the post-game when he said his priority was to play defense.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I think he has games where he does more. He had a breakaway layup in transition last night and 6 assists to only 2 turnovers!

He also had a block and last game he had a couple nice drives to go with his outside shot.

But I’d be ecstatic if he’s only one dimensional and shoots 58% at the rate he’s attempting 3′s!

  • MillaRed

If he would have pulled off that put back dunk or the other dunk attempt when he went coast to coast, he would have been #1 again on ESPNs play of tehe week!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I agree. I see the FTA/FGA number improving if we can just get our C on the floor!

    FREE THE GUY!!!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Yeah, it’s unfortunate that he got hit on the wrist on that putback attempt!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

That only seems to happen at the beginning of the game. VJ3 got to the line last night in the second half and was instrumental in the huge run that pushed the lead from 15-30 in just a few minutes. He does seem to score at the beginning of games as IU falls behind but I argue that it has as much to do with the other players on the floor as it does with him. With the exception of a couple games where Hulls and Watford were assertive, it seems like nobody wants to be aggressive and score from the opening tip besides VJ3. I think it still has a bit to do with youth! I think we’ll start to see that change as the season grows and these sophomores and freshman grow as well.

At least I hope so because we aren’t going to survive with one scoring option the first 8 minutes against WISC, PUke, pUKe, IL, OSU, MINN, MSU, etc.!

  • MillaRed

One of the first impressions I had with Mo last season were his skinny legs. I think the injured leg was dealing with atrophy since he just couldn’t work it at all post-surgery. But overall the kid just plain has skinny legs.

I just hope he is able to get near 100% by seasons end. I’m beginning to wonder if the rigors of the season will give the leg a chance to get back to normal.

Butler up 10 on Evansville presently in 2nd half

  • Anonymous

granted may have to replace Elston with your hero and i too like Pritch a little more right now but Elston’s p word is higher either way when big 10 play starts we will be overmatched at that position on a nightly basis. I am all for FREE GUY and i hope that we will not be too terribly disappointed just hoping our superior guard play will neutralize that

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Nice to see the Hoosier football team pull out the Bucket win and nice to see Evansville take Butler to OT at Hinkle making the hoosiers look even better right now!

I wonder if Brad Stevens is kicking himself right now for not taking one of those higher profile jobs you know he could have had? I still think Butler is a tourney team but they miss Heyward bad! They are most likely never going to have the type team and run they had last year and they aren’t landing those Yogi and Cody type recruits they thought they would after that run!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Looks like Butler may be going down! Making the win at home against Evansville look better right now!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I’ve always had a soft spot for Evansville (probably because Jim Crews is an IU guy) so it’s nice to see a big win for them against Butler! If they can hold on in the last 7.2 seconds!

  • MillaRed

The Evansville squad we took care of just knocked off Butler at home.

Are we better than Butler this year?

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I think it’s too early to tell but I haven’t been too impressed with Butler the three games I’ve watched them play. You can definitely tell they miss Heyward and that number one option he provided. He also gave them more size without sacrificing skill!

  • Anonymous

Just wanted to point out that Ronald Nored was not playing due to a concussion.

  • BaseballBuc

If nothing else Milla, It helps our strength of schedule.

  • Diesel
  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Um, excuse me Mr. Diesel, but did I see an outside jumper in those highlights?

Uh-oh . . . everyone look out if he develops that part of his game! He’ll be a one and done but he’ll be a spectacular one-year player if he adds a jumper to his arsenal!!!

  • Diesel

Ace – I saw that and thought the exact same thing!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Sort of bittersweet! He sure is going to be fun to watch but I have a feeling it’s only going to be for a season or two!

  • BaseballBuc

I don’t think so. I think he is perfect for the role he plays now. You don’t want to put too much pressure on a freshman, especially one who has never played point guard before. If he can come off the bench, play D, and throw down some dunks and bring energy, then thats all I want from him. At least this year. No need to panic, VJIII will get better, a lot of them are unforced errors like charges and travels.

Richmond beats Purdue 65-54. Good day. Indiana takes The Bucket and Purdue loses a basketball game.

Hellsyeah!!! Go Spiders!!! I hate PUke!!!

    —first post—
    this site is amazing!!!
i am currently living in japan; therefore, i have been unable to watch many games or be in the “know” until now. i am very stoked to see what CTC has been doing on the recruiting end of coaching as well as how IU has performed early this season. however, i am curious to know what people think of the hoosiers chances against BC/(that school down south) and also how they will fare against the B10?

thanks to everyone posting and keeping me updated across the big pond.
    great site alex and co.

I’d generally have to agree with you. I am just imagining how I would approach our first “tough” match-up of the year. I think Creek is an outstanding player, but he is still working on building strength in his leg. I just want to see a lineup with a little bit of energy, and I think VO brings that along with D and scoring ability. I trust TC, and I’ve supported him from day one (although occasionally wondering what he was thinking at the time.) Regardless, I’m looking forward to the game on Wednesday. Go Hoosiers!!

Also, kudos to Lynch and the Hoosiers on beating PUke today. It is a good way to end Lynch’s career at IU (hint, hint Fred Glass.)

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

Richmond is probably a tournament team, but wow, I didn’t see that coming. Woo-hoo! That’ll knock PUke out of the top 10 for sure.

  • Anonymous

Bad day for PUke fans around the globe, and I can’t help but smile.

  • HoosierNshaker

I’ve seen him on campus on multiple occasions and Mo is just all around skinny…part of it may be his legs are skinny from lack of exercise or he may just have a 19-20 year old metabolism. As he gets healthy hopefully he beefs up.

  • Kelin OlaHarrispo

    IU fans are literally everywhere….awesome.

  • Anonymous

maybe CTC wants Mo out there for physical reasons related to the knee, but i’m guessing it’s more for mental reasons related to the knee. Every time he goes to the rim, you gotta think it (the injury) is replaying somewhere in his brain and that affects his body.

“Maybe CTC can get him out of there when he makes a dumb play and it will stop him from compounding the problem.” Are you a disciple of RMK?

That’s EXACTLY what CTC should do…sit him down and explain, “hey, here’s what you did that caused that. They scored b/c of [that stupid play] and now we have to get the points back. Don’t make [that stupid play] again.” Of course, we don’t expect CTC to choke him or throw a chair at him…

And now Richmond over Purdue (LOVE THAT)!

  • Bleeding Crimson

Welcome aboard. Always wanted to go to Japan. I take it you’ve been there for awhile.
IU’s D is almost top notch. It will keep us in many games as long as we can shut the lane down. If and when Guy is let out of prison then IU will be solid in the post. Otherwise fouls are going to rake up. It is a great time to be an IU fan and CTC is GREAT. Met him several times, down to earth guy and loves the fans.

I took my brother to a game to get his autograph and 20 min’s before tip off we were coming out of the varisty shop heading to the locker room and he just came out heading towards the locker room, needless to say in a hurry. I asked if he had time to sign my brothers hat and he said “no problem”. I told him we thought we would have to wait until after the game and didn’t expect this. He said “it’s all about timing”. Surreal moment. Of course we stayed after the game and received almost the entire’s team autographs. Great day.

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

IU won Friday night, PUke lost twice on Saturday (once to IU), and ND beat USC … if the Colts win tonight, it will have been a perfect sports weekend for this guy.

  • Anonymous

actually i graduated in may and moved here a few weeks after that, but have been out of the loop since then. yes i met coach crean at a scrimmage in AH a few years back and after meeting him i knew that everything was going to be alright, he was going to bring the hoosier nation back to glory. glad to see he is still very personable and that your brother also got to experience that. hope he continues to inspire the next generation of hoosiers.

  • Timmccoy

I thought the same thing but I kinda agree with Kelin if we have Guy we could pull the upset.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Amen, brother! I could hop on the Cubs website to find out they traded for Adrian Gonzalez and it would be a perfect sports weekend indeed! I do root for the Colts but I have to admit I’m a Bears fan so I would need wins by both to complete the package, but hey, Irish over the cheaters, IU basketball with their best game, Oaken Bucket, and PUke gets beat! I don’t want to get too greedy!

Coach Crean is definitley “the guy” and we are fortunate to have him as the face of the program. A couple of quick stories to illustrate my point.

My best friend is the head coach at Princeton in (Zeller’s) conference. Crean was at games early on to recruit Zeller but always took the extra time to visit with him after games, making a tremendous impression (did not hurt that they had really good teams, he is no dummy). Point is that he is taking the time to meet the coaches all over Indiana and it is already paying dividends.

Second story, we have a lifelong IU fan in the community I live in that got the chance to attend the Franklin exhibition game and meet Coach Crean after the game. He told Coach Crean where he was from and he immediatley knew the town and our small local bakery and told him how much he enjoyed their donuts. He shows up at the next game with donuts in hand and got to go into the locker room and meet the players. He has now told the story to hundreds of people and CC receives wonderful PR you don’t get without being sincere with the fan base (the anti-Calipari).

Bottom line is CC pays attention to the little things and they are starting to accumulate into big things. Makes me proud to be an IU grad.

  • Anonymous

Aw, now, don’t be mean to Coach Criminalipari—I’d bet if World Wide Wes showed up with doughnuts, he’d get into the locker room!

  • Anonymous

If the NCAA clears Guy in time to be back for that game that will just be one more example the sUcK fans will use to point out “evurbody’s out ta get Coach Cal, cuz they cain’t prove Enes did nuthin’ wrong, and he cain’t play.”
