Yogi Ferrell makes the call for Indiana

by in Recruiting | November 24th, 2010

Indiana’s unprecedented recruiting run continued Wednesday night when 2012 Park Tudor point guard Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell became the ninth Hoosier commitment since August 9.

Ferrell, the No. 17 player in the 2012 class according to Rivals.com, announced his decision to attend Indiana over Butler, Florida, Virginia and Wake Forest prior to Park Tudor’s season-opener against University.

“Right now in front of my family the Park Tudor family who have all been my biggest supporters, I want to verbally commit to play my college basketball for coach Tom Crean at Indiana,” Ferrell said to a capacity crowd.

The 5-10 point guard becomes the fourth recruit in IU’s 2012 class that also includes Broad Ripple’s Ron Patterson, United Faith Christian Academy’s Peter Jurkin and La Porte La Lumiere’s Hanner Perea.

He’s the third five-star recruit to commit to Crean since October 31, joining the aforementioned Perea and 2011 Washington big man Cody Zeller, who committed and signed a Letter of Intent on November 11.

Inside the Hall will have more coverage of this developing story in the coming hours.

Its pretty impressive what Crean is doing with all these verbals. Whether they all sign or not its a great step. I don’t put much stock in a kid saying I’ll play for IU in 2013 or 2014 but I hope we keep all these 2012 guys.

It may finally be worth it to go back to bloomington for a game

  • Bleeding Crimson

WOW, this is surrrrrreal. What a recruiting beast…you go CTC. Can’t wait to see who he’ll recruit when he has a winning record.
This has to be some sort of NCAA recruiting record.

Just one more piece of the puzzle and the “Crean Team” will be complete…. GARY HARRIS!!

    Welcome, Yogi!

That works! Welcome to Hoosier Nation Yogi!

I agree that it’s tough to put stock in verbals that are so far out in the future, but in this instance there are a few factors working in our favor. 1) All the recruits (except PJ) play HS ball in state, so maintaining relationships and traveling to see them is less of a burden. 2) Many of them are already friends and know they want to play together. And most importantly 3) we have Coach Crean — not the type of guy to feel a sense of entitlement or rest on laurels. I have every confidence that each of these recruits will get the same attention from CTC that they would have received if the “hunt” was still on.

Regardless, this is just a great time to be Hoos. Congratulations to Yogi, CTC, ITH, and every one of you. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go mentally prepare for this food coma.

This thing we call…HOOSIER NATION is getting better and better. CTC I salute you!!! I can now say “the next Isiah Thomas” is on his way to Bloomington folks. Yogi to….Hanner….and Zeller sounds amazing!!!!! GO HOOSIERS!!!!!!

Way to go Yogi! What a great group of players coming in 2012, which its all due to Coach Crean. Way to go Coach!

There’s nevers been a bad time to go Bloomington for a game. Fair-weather fandom isn’t fandom, it riding the bandwagon.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

So, basically CTC is working on recruiting an entire team in one recruiting class. If he lands Harris then he has a PG, 2 off-guards/wings, a PF, and a C!

I say give the guy a lifetime contract and the keys to the state!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I know what you mean man! My food coma started tonight! I lost 30 pounds in September and October to get ready for the holiday season!

Congrats IU and Yogi….on another note Alex what do you no about CTC recruiting Luka Zivkovic 6’8 sf/pf in the class 2011 seen video of him at a game early this week

  • Marsh21

WELCOME YOGI TO HOOSIER NATION. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THE 2012 CLASS EVEN BETTER. ONE MORE TO GO FOLKS AND I THINK MR. HARRIS WILL BE COMING TO B-TOWN.

WOW………..THE B-10 COACHES AND OTHER TOP D1 PROGRAMS WILL HAVE TO THINK TWICE ABOUT COMING INTO THIS STATE TO GET IN A WAR WITH CREAN. HE’S PRETTY GOOD IN HIS OWN BACK YARD!!!

THAT INCLUDES YOU THAD MATTA! NO MORE EASY PICKINS BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcom Yogi !! lookin foward to seeing you play as a HOOSIER.

    Welcome, Yogi! And congrats CTC!

This recruiting stretch feels totally unique. We may not have this many commits over 4 classes in the span of a few months again…because we won’t need to. And they all know each other. And they’re mostly Indiana kids. Yeah, this is going to be a special couple years.

  • fergrad

    Weclome to IU!!!

Is anyone else excited to see what Kelin’s new name is going to be now?! The anticipation has been mounting.

    Jeremy Kelin Harris?

Yogi Yogi Yogi Yogi………………..Wooooo Hoooooo……….This is a huge pick up and very excited to see him play for years at IU. I think Yogi will make an immediate impact. He will find a way to be a leader from day one. The best part about these recruits go beyond their apparent talent – they are smart, motivated, hardworking, team oriented, respectful, etc etc etc.

Welcome to IU. We hope to see you lead the Big Ten in assists. Can’t wait to see u in candy stripes!!!!

    GO IU!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it’s Indiana

The biggest domino is only 5-10, and he just fell. Now IT’S ON!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

From the word of almost everyone, there will be room. I know there’s 13 for next year and then four plus the oversign so Harris would be the oversign but I wouldn’t worry about it. It seems CTC knows who and what he wants and how to do it.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I don’t think we will ever see this again in this short a period of time! But, there’s a reason for that. The cupboard was bare and CTC had to start basically from scratch so there was a lot of room on the shelf for new recruits. As a team gets deeper and deeper their needs and wish lists grow smaller and smaller and, though I think CTC will always be an upper echelon recruiter and rule the state, it won’t be necessary to fill up four classes all at once.

But then again, I could get use to this kind of news all of the time.

  • CutterInChicago

So, I am back in Btown for TGiving and with the announcement of #YogiStock tonight, I truly believe its heading towards a huge long-term Thanksgiving for the Hoosier Nation. I’ve seen a lot of IU hoops since the 70s and this recent recruiting run is something new, crazy and great. I just hope we all have the patience and hindsight to look back in say, February, when its likely our current roster is struggling, and say, “Holy crap, just remember, we are getting all sort of crazy talent with high character as well!”

Happy Thanksgiving to the ITH and its loyal followers. I will be at The Hall on Friday night and then there will be a beverage here (well, after the game at a fine Btown establishment)

This man can bring in anyone he wants (so can he find us a football coach?)

And even though Jurkin isn’t in-state, he has a former HS teammate in the fold

You may have just tapped something. Yogi—Isiah. Cody–Turner. Etherington—Whitman. Perea—Tolbert. Patterson—Jim Thomas. No one that puts me in mind of Ted Kitchel, but otherwise I’d say there are similarities abounding.

  • Anonymous

I thought the very same thing, with the possibility that if Harris goes elsewhere, (and I don’t think he will if Crean wants him–and I’d say he does!) Hollowell or Bail become the wing/small forward.

  • Anonymous

    Is he Ivan Renko’s nephew?

  • Anonymous

I’d assume there is a pretty good chance for that to happen, because SOMEBODY is sure as hell going to be open!

  • Anonymous

We’ve all commented on “locking down the borders,” but for god’s sake, Crean’s barely had to leave the Indianapolis metro area! It’s like the Mall of America for basketball talent. No, strike that, it would be more like Sam’s Club now, ’cause shopping is for members only (and you can’t get a card if you’re from Ohio..or Kentucky…or Illinois…or….)

  • Anonymous

We are a dangerous group right now.

We look to be a tournament team next year with the addition of Zeller, Etherington, and the maturation of the ’09, and ’10 classes .

In 2012 the ’09 class will be a group of grizzled veterans. Oladipo and Sheeney won’t be far behind. The freshman class will enter with a high level of familiarity with each other and members of the team. We look like we’ll have a group that could contend for a sixth banner if Watford and Creek choose to stay on for senior campaigns.

After the nod from Yogi, it feels like a commitment from Harris is an inevitability. My question is, where does that leave Hollowell? He holds a current offer from IU, along with about a dozen other schools. He’s a versatile player that can play 2, 3 or 4 at the next level, and there is something about sticking it to Ohio State that would feel really really good.

I almost feel like suggesting we should ask one of our current scholarship players (I’m looking at you Matt Roth) to drop it, or transfer, to add a guy like Hollowell to the squad.

  • Anonymous

The NCAA may need to make an exception for IUs opponents so they can play 10 guys on the floor, since they’ll need to double team ALL our players!

  • Anonymous

I’m not sure how the red-shirt deal works…I assume the university honors the scholarship in terms of paying for credit hours. So, in that sense, Roth has already received the benefit of having his college education subsidized (his injuries surely didn’t prevent him from going to class and learning). So giving up his scholly may actually make sense. Not to imply that he doesn’t deserve a scholly..just sayin he’s already got most of the juice from the fruit.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

    And plays for Indiana Elite!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Yeah, right now you have to think that if Tom Crean wants something he’s going to get what he wants, too!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I think they list him at 6’11″. May be more like 6’10″.

    But he’s tall.

  • Anonymous

We actually will need two players to leave to be able to fit in Harris and Hollowell. WIth Yogi the 2012 team is at it’s max with 13 scholarship players (this is assuming the Roth does not take his redshirt).

  • Anonymous

Until next Christmas…and the one after that, and the one after that (when these guys are actually in uniform!)

  • Anonymous

He was listed in Jody Demling’s article on IU’s recruits in today’s Louisville Courier-Journal at 6’11″, but he was also listed as a center. Jurkin was also listed as 6’11″, though, so maybe they took an inch from him and gave it to Cody.

I have no idea but here is a youtube link….think he is # 10 also have a 7 foot teammate believe he is # 22 (2012)
