Report of Yogi Ferrell’s commitment — or not

by in Recruiting | November 23rd, 2010

OK so let’s start layering this commitment saga:

The Indianapolis Star posted a report on its website saying that Yogi Ferrell will commit to Indiana tomorrow night at Park Tudor, per “multiple sources.”

Only trouble is, both Hugh Kellenberger and I have sources telling us that said report is not accurate. Then Ferrell himself tweeted: “I have not committed.” Ferrell tweeted again, saying he wasn’t pleased with the report.

So this thing is going to play out over the next 24 hours. We’ll have an answer one way or the other by dinnertime tomorrow.

  • Anonymous

So are your sources telling you a different school? Or just that this story cannot be verified.

  • Anonymous

I assume there’s no chance that this annoys Yogi enough to change his decision, right? I’m just being paranoid, I’m sure.

  • Anonymous

No, I don’t think Yogi would change his choice based on what a local reporter says…
    I’m still 99% thinking Yogi is IU’s

  • Anonymous

The reporter wants to be the first to file the story and get it right.
The student athlete wants the attention of the announcement and doesn’t want the surprise destroyed.
The fan doesn’t want the report, that is most likely true, to anger the student athlete and change their mind.

The report is probably true. Yogi is angry that his spotlight has been dimmed a bit for tomorrow, and we are worried Yogi is going to change his mind.

  • Anonymous

Nothing says welcome to IU like having a reporter swoop in and steal Yogi’s limelight…

  • IUGRADUATE

The report should have not been released until they got the confirmation from Yogi.

Yogi, I am sure you will have your moment tomorrow, and many Hoosier fans are going to watch/listen/read your annoucement. I hope that your future goes with IU.

  • Zach Osterman

That this story cannot be verified.

  • Anonymous

That is just not how reporting works. If you trust your source and understand that source is in fact connected to the situation, you go for it. As a reporter, you’re job is not about protecting the party’s interests, it is about getting eyes on your stories and the ads that surround the stories on the web page or print page.

When I was school, there Wasserstein still a belief that you used unamed sources sparingly and tried to get confirmation from the true source, but times have changed in the past ten years. I don’t blame The Star reporter as much as I blame the industry pressures to be first. It’s a delicate balance.

  • Raptrbreth

Wow first an article on a sellout then this…IndyStar just needs to finish the job of going bankrupt so Indianapolis will be a better place.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jordan-Laesch/6802056 Jordan Laesch

I really feel he is coming to IU, he just wants his announcement to be special, can’t blame him, big moment in his life.

  • Anonymous

Yeah- it’s pretty easy to report any rumor as ‘anonymous sources’. That being said I can’t imagine this would have any effect on his actual choice. I would surmise he’s ‘not happy about it’ because it’s stealing his thunder tomorrow.

  • cooper

He seems like a bit of a diva

  • 11th and Done (Dunn)

Hey Alex, could you break the story “Yogi to Wake Forest” within the next ten minutes?

  • Pb1230

Agree, his sources are likely the message boards on peegs and hoosiernation.

  • Anonymous

He’s 16, has worked hard, and wants his moment. I don’t see that as being a diva.

  • Pb1230

I would agree to an extent, but with Rabjohns its very debatable that he did his due diligence, and his sources are likely not that connected to the situation

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_YIKRELENCTUH2BHUZTMUGVGSS4 Steve

its only one more day – can’t we wait without driving him and everyone else crazy.

Meanwhile we can post and defend Indiana University in this article about our program. Seems we have some detractors in the “comments” section

  • 323SGrant

He should just let Yogi make his announcement and I hope it’s IU.

  • Anonymous

This is a kid who just wants the chance to announce his own decision. He has obviously put enough consideration into this to list his top 5 just days before he said he would announce his decision. I think this is about making a classy move and being able to thank all of the programs and coaches who recruited him, much like the Zeller family did, rather than just saying, “I’m going to…” and leave it at that.

  • Anonymous

Wow, Rabjohns’s response to all of this on Twitter is just so BITTER.

  • marcusgresham

Just read that from your link and it appears to be one idiot Kentucky fan. If you want to tell him for me, don’t compare IU as cheating “just like UK” because that’s one instance for Indiana, as opposed to Kentucky, which has seen either its basketball or football team on probation every single decade since the 1940s. That is a pretty substantial pattern of cheating, not a random occurance.

  • Yogi Kelin Harris

The problem with Yogi’s commitment is it will be the most anticipated uneventful presser in recruiting history. EVERYONE knows where he is going not sure why even deny it at this point.

  • marcusgresham

We all know he’s taking his talents to the south beach (of Monroe Lake)

  • Anonymous

The story has been up for over an hour now. If it was unverifiable, wouldnt the paper have redacted the piece? What he is reporting is not earth-shattering journalism. Its what everyone, including those who follow this blog, have called for -for a while now.

  • millzy32

I think you mean Lake Monroe and I hope he does better at IU than LeBron is doing down in Miami. Love to see my Pacers getting after it last night.

Go IU, Go Pacers, Go Colts, and Go Redlegs. Had to get ‘em all in there.

  • Anonymous

I sill believe yogi commits. Looking at the glass half full I think this shows yogi, current commits, and future commits that we are indeed a family…the way the fan base have had his back on Twitter reiterates to me that we care more about them as people compared to most school only caring about their basketball talent…I bet yogi and the rest of the recruits love reading the reaction of fans….that being said hoosier nation stand up and applaud yourselves because WE have done it again

  • Ots

Ernie Pyle is spinning in his grave

  • Bleeding Crimson
  • Luke72

Proving that the current Star staff is carrying on their tradition of disrespecting IU and all things IU. Almost wish I subscriped so I could cancel. Thank God for ITH!

  • RobD

has Yogi even taken a visit to any other school? can any of you guys really see him standing up tomorrow and saying “I’m going to play basketball for [anyone other than IU]“? I can’t.

  • 11th and Done (Dunn)

Does anyone else get the feeling that they are closet PUke fans doing this on purpose as a desperate last attempt to sway Yogi and IU momentum?

  • cooper

How are you people blaming a reporter for… reporting. It’s his job. If he has enough info to run the story then I would hope he does. It’s what he gets paid for.

  • Brian

WE didn’t do anything disrespectful to Yogi. The Indianapolis Star reporter did. Wasn’t the IU Nation. That’s got to be the focal point. We want you, Yogi, and will help make your years at IU loud (in the Hall) and fun.

  • Anonymous

Have to disagree as well… let the kid have his day in the spotlight, he deserves at least that much.

  • Bleeding Crimson

It’s like Hoosier Transfer said “they want to be the first to get it out there”. Kinda like Hoosier Deep Throat, being able to say…I told you so and add some sort of notch on their belt.

I don’t subscribe to the Star but I do go online. Terry usually does a pretty good job but I don’t read enought to say anything about Jeff. Regardless, to steal a kids thunder the day before he annouces is steal pretty low in my book. I can’t see Yogi letting this change his mind but it has tainted his day for tomorrow.

Maybe all of the ITH’ers should comment on the article and tell Jeff what a mistake he may have made.

  • Anonymous

I had “Lake Monroe” typed and thought, “no, wait, that doesn’t sound right.”
    I have to remember it’s opposite—Patoka Lake, Lake Monroe…

  • Anonymous

I’d personally like to see another point guard. I don’t like being one deep at a position, especially if the starter is (assuming Yogi signs,) not that big of a guy to withstand the abuse he could be taking. I know Buss is a combo guy, but I’d still like to see another player whose main focus is ballhandling.

  • Theproudesthoosier

Probably so. This matter should be handled in such a delicate manner with much respect. Don’t use the kid to further your career Rabjohns. Let him make and announce his decision and then REPORT on what he says. Use THAT information and write an informed article based on sheer facts. What the heck, you can even write it in such a way that has everyone pawning for more and hanging on your every word. Maybe even give an opinion or point of view on how you think his decision could impact Indiana. That is true journalism. It is definitely not journalism when you try and become the town loud mouth. This can completely turn someone away and off, along with undoing so much hard work by Tom Crean’s staff. The bottom line is do not report speculation, and be respectful to people to either confirm the story from them personally or let him make his OWN announcement at the decided time that de has clearly stated he wished. He is a kid, but de deserves his space and chance to announce. That is what he has earned by all of the hard work he has put in so far. He has not earned the chance to be a pawn by a slobbering journalist.

Here’s why only named sources should be used: Every intelligent reader has learned that reporters are generally far less than reliable and in fact often have an agenda of their own that they are selling. While we know that reporters are seldom reliable, their sources may be. The only way to determine whether they are is to have them be identified. The days are long past when people assumed what they read in newspapers was accurate. The general lack of credibility is a principal reason why newspapers are dying.

  • stonaroni

I think the SEC as a whole has a real issue with cheating and ethical issues. Every year it is someone in the SEC pulling a stunt. Pearl, Calipari and Bledsoe, Calipari and Kanter, Cam Newton and Miss St, Alabama Football, Agents interference, UK/Calipari/Davis recruit. This is all from this year. I am sure I left a bunch of crap out.

Having lived in the south, the SEC is an armpit conference as far as ethics, the ACC is much more distinguished.

  • stonaroni

Bingo!!!! His dad damn near said IU in an article the day after Cody signed. Yogi tweeted about big news on 11/24; what conclusions does a fan or reporter draw from this, that he is going to Florida. No way, he is going to IU. I am guessing AE,CZ, Buss, and all the other friends know this. i am guessing Yogi and his family and friends have been talking it up since he is committing tomorrow, Throw in all the other committs in the past 30 days and the piece of the puzzle fits….Yogi to IU.

I get Yogi wants his day, but we already know the outcome. Personally, he could have played coy for another month or two and announced in early 2011. Let the Cody buzz wear off if he is so worried about speculation and put the cell phone down.

  • Anonymous

Yogi, if you are listening, EVERY Indiana fan is more than willing to wait for YOU to name your school. We hope it is IU. Bloomington is like family and home for you! Tomorrow is YOGISTOCK! WE are going to celebrate together!

  • hoosierfan

did anyone put Dakich in this light when he said cody zeller was a “done deal” to IU? Lay off the reporter. The only reason this is getting blown up is because of the way the Ferrell’s reacted – notice the difference with the Zeller’s.

  • stonaroni

Again, no love for AE. The kid can shoot the lights out….and he hasn’t had the joy of shooting 24/7 at Cook Hall to improve yet. He can play SG or SF. He is 6’6″. In 2012 he will be a So and VO and WS will be juniors. We are going to have serious issues with wing players as we are collecting them in bunches.

UK was one season away from having huge issue with Gillespie. The guy already had been kicked out of numerous bars in Lexington. My favorite story was when he was at an alumni mixer, got tanked at the hotel and begged a bunch of coeds to go skinny dipping with him in the hotel pool. Guess who the only idiot was naked in the pool? That came from the mouth of one of his players.

UK fans also love to tout about how great there team wwas last year who didn’t even make a Final 4, we have the most recent trip between the two schools.

They had one strong year in 10 and they think they are exhaulted to the pinnacle. Duke would absolutely crush UK right now. So would Mich St.

Even better, name me the best player UK has produced from KY in 20 years. It is Rondo and he hated UK and Tubby Smith. He never played hard for him because Tubby wouldn’t let him run the offense or be creative. he sure looks like a stud these days.

  • stonaroni

No kidding. I cannot recall who wrote the article, but in August they were stroking Painter as the wonderful recruiter and how CTC could not recruit in state kids and doubting that he would get it done. My, my, my how things have changed.

There will be a load of local and national media types who will get a huge dose of IU over the next several years. I hope the naysayers choke on it.

Can’t wait to hear Jim Nance act like he is IU’s biggest fan during the tournament when he has nothing good to say now that we are still underdogs.

Maybe Vitale will apologize for thinking IU should have re-hired Bobby Knight and acting disappointed in IU. I got news for all fans, Bobby never landed this many recruits or this level of talent past the mid-70′s.

But the alternative is the internet, where any numbnut (like me, and I use my own name, so it can even be any anonymous numbnut,) can post something and then a million people run with it

  • Anonymous

The Star reporter did his job. The source that leaked the story stole Ferrel’s Thunder.

  • Anonymous

Pearl is the one that saddens me. I don’t know what happened there, because the Bruce Pearl I remember actually got himself blacklisted from D-I jobs for several years after the incident when he publicized what Illinois was doing. I met him a time or two when he was at USI and I just loved the guy–I still do, and I just hope it was one weak moment from which he learned his lesson and will never repeat.

Jamal Mashburn was pretty good, too
