Q & A: 2013 commit Collin Hartman

by in Recruiting | November 21st, 2010

It was a busy day in the IU basketball recruiting world as the Hoosiers picked up commitments from 2013 forwards Collin Hartman and Devin Davis Jr.

Inside the Hall caught up with the 6-6, 190-pound Hartman, a sophomore at Indianapolis Cathedral, for a Q & A on Sunday evening shortly after his commitment to the Hoosiers:

On what spurred his decision to commit early to Indiana:

“Actually, for two or three weeks I’ve been thinking about it. Thinking about all of the possibilities, ups and downs. And the more I thought about it, the more IU kept coming back. There’s nothing I don’t like about IU. Everything’s good. They are enthusiastic about what they do. The fans are in it, great fanbase. And everybody’s just like a huge family there. I’m a family guy. That’s what I want in a college. Being close to the coaches, being close with the players and having the fans want to be close with you.”

On the decision to tell his mother, Melissa, to stop the car on their way home so he could go back to Bloomington and commit:

“We got about 10 or 15 minutes down the road and I was like, ‘Mom, we’ve gotta turn around. I’ve got to commit. It’s right. It’s just a gut feeling.’ So I called my uncle, because he’s like a father figure to me, and I called him to see if there was any reason that he could find to think about not going to IU. Because I told him that I thought about it. But we couldn’t find any. So I was like, ‘alright, let’s go for it’ and we went and finalized it.”

On Tom Crean’s reaction:

“(Laughs) He was pretty speechless, very happy. Just hugs all around and a lot of smiles.”

On the impact of Cody Zeller’s commitment to IU on his decision:

“I didn’t follow it that much, but it definitely had an effect because Cody Zeller is a great basketball player and could have gone almost anywhere in the nation he wanted to obviously. But for him to have that faith in committing to a place that is going nowhere but up and just seeing that trust in the program and the trust in the coaches, because me and him are both family guys, and seeing him do that just really helped me with my confidence and saying, ‘yeah, we can all do this.’”

On his relationship with his future teammate, Warren Central’s Devin Davis Jr:

“Me and him are really good friends. We’ve been playing against each other since fourth grade. It’s just going to be great. We know each other pretty well. He’s a great player. Very athletic. He can anything he wants on the court. But he’s just a good kid off the court, fun to hang around with and all that stuff.”

Hate to keep posting about one recruit on the page of another, but Yogi is going to announce on Wednesday. Is recruiting whiplash an actual malady that I can use to take time off work? I may need to do so Wednesday if things break our way.

You said it best Alex, he is ‘well spoken’ for a kid his age. Great attitude. Mature.

Cody’s signing makes it’s first impact. Seems like #2 comes on Wednesday.

He made his Mom stop and turn back so he could commit? Awesome, the power of AH!

I can only read the postings on this site about Colts losses with a bit of bemusement. They have no idea anymore what true NFL suffering is like.

On the bright side for PU, recruiting should be simplified over the next few years with so many targets off the board.

Oddly enough I think Purdue is focusing on the 2020 class to get a head start on Crean.

I think it made numbers 1 and 2 today and 3 comes Wednesday, although the order makes no difference to me!

WOW!!! Collin Hartman 2013 today, Devin Davis 2013 today, and Yogi 2012 on Wednesday 11/24! It is time for Gary Harris for 2012 to say it is IU before Christmas. Jeremy Hollowell needs to get busy if he wants to wear the candy stripes! Has Tom Crean “LOCKED” up the State of Indiana or what?

Isn’t this great! I can’t wait to play basketball Tuesday with all my PUke graduate buddies! All I’m going to say is, “Uh, who do you guys have lined up for the 2012, 2013, and 2014 classes?

    I love it!!!

ESPN and Rivals both had comments about CTC locking up Indiana and most of its best talent!

  • SeattleHoosier

I hear Painter has contacted Zeller’s parents to discuss Purdue financing their next son…

  • Bryan

Much obliged. At this rate, you may be back to being Kelin Blab by Christmas.

  • SeattleHoosier

Family, fans, future success…he gets it!!!

  • Yogi Kelin Harris

Bryan I have no idea what happens after Yogi commits. I had no opportunity to do a name for 2013 or 2014. I gotta start working ahead. I do have a combo name that includes a recruit and current player. Won’t unveil it until Yogi makes it happen on Wednesday….

At this rate, you might think about the 2017 class… or hope that some recruit comes on the radar with the name “Blab.”

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

Yeah, that’s all well and good, but can he jump to hit a ball 12’2″ in the air?

“If you experience stimulation lasting longer than four hours, contact your physician…” No, wait, that’s Cialis. Go ahead, and revel in that whiplash!

Agree – read an article where he and Hummel were close, so I naturally assumed he was a PUke lock. Could be the best player in the state for 2013…..CTC must be feeling pretty good (now has outrecruited PU, Butler, and NC and OSU, LU also locked out now) – and yes he deserves it after these last two years. Gotta thank Bill Cook as well.

How far have we come since the days of Bud Mackey, Jamarcus Ellis, and Dre Thomas?? Unreal – those days seem so far away now . . .

Way to go coach and players . . . not only great players, but high quality young men.

Thank you Bill and Gayle Cook. Your contribution to IU Athletics (specifically basketball) has been an amazing thing for the teams, the players, and the fans to rally around and restore the glory. The investment in Cook Hall is no less valuable to Southern Indiana than the investment in French Lick..or waaaayyy back when you revived downtown with Fountain Square. Thank you once again!!

Off topic, but both Kanter and Selby’s statuses have been determined. A ruling on Guy shouldn’t be too far behind I would think? How many other status issues are out there for the NCAA to rule on? I want to see this guy play in more than just a scrimmage.

How about a little love for the guys on the team already….they decided to come play for IU when nothing was looking good and have stomached the roughest stretch of IU history ever…these guys have paved the way for the BEST college basketball story ever whenever banner 6 is raised!!

4-0 and lets keep it rollin fellas!!!

  • TrueCrimson

Unbelievable, Unbelievable. Wow, the best kids from the state each year for 4 years at least.

    It’s Indiana.

    A sobering thought…..

Remember when our two recruits were…Matt Carlino and David Williams?

  • 11th and Done (Dunn)

and being disappointed about the loss of moses abraham?

  • BaseballBuc

If there’s one question I want to ask Crean someday it’s, what was with the David Williams commitment.

  • Anonymous

I believe this calls for a poem

Many would say IU was through
They said that the rumors weren’t true
But Tom Crean is a pro
    He recruits to and fro
And now we all LOL at Purdue

  • RJG

They don’t think, that’s why they had to go to PUke.

  • the 203

It’s funny thinking about how worried we were only a few months ago when nothing seemed to be going our way and then all the pieces began to fall into place.

  • Yogi Kelin Harris

David Williams was ALL McLeod. That was his boy….
