Devin Davis Jr. and Collin Hartman commit to IU

  • 11/21/2010 6:29 pm in

On a normal day, the commitments of perhaps the two best 2013 players in the state would get separate posts. But these times, it seems, are not normal in the world of Indiana basketball recruiting. We’ve entered uncharted territory, folks. The Indiana borders may officially be locked down.

As you’ve probably read by now if you’re on Twitter, both Warren Central’s Devin Davis Jr. and Cathedral’s Collin Hartman have committed to play for Tom Crean and Indiana.

Both commitments were broken by Kyle Neddenriep of the Indianapolis Star in a matter of ten minutes:

Warren Central’s Devin Davis Jr. (2013) just committed to Indiana, per his father.

Cathedral’s Collin Hartman (2013) has committed to Indiana, per his mother.

More on both of these commitments later, but for now, I think it’s safe to say that Tom Crean has caught fire on the recruiting trail.

  • I know we’ve got Zeller, Jurkin, and Perea in the pipeline, but do we need another big in the 2013 class? Pritch, Elston, Capo, and Guy will all be gone by that point… and Jeff Howard will be a great sub by that point (as a senior), but given the foul problems our bigs have had this season, I’d like to get somebody else big (esp. since Crean and Cody have stated their preference to feature him at the 4).

And I realize it’s silly to complain given the string of recruiting victories — so I’m not trying to be a wet blanket here — just asking a question (and crossing my fingers).

  • I’ll see if I can’t put it into a PowerPoint slide for lecture on Monday.

I tell you what is awesome about this string of commits. While the rest of the nation scrambles to sign last minutes talent, Coach Crean will be in the film room developing strategies to kick the crap out of the Big 10. Unlike them he already has the next 4 years of recruits locked up.

  • Forgot about Lyles in 2014 … but he may only be at IU for one year and I don’t know if he’d be a 5.

  • I agree to an extent and would even add in PG. This is definitely a day to celebrate these two guys committing and hopefully Yogi Wednesday, but currently the commits and added to the guys that will still be around are extremely wing heavy.

Beyond Yogi, I think we need 1 more point guard and another big in the next few classes.

My sentiments exactly. I hadn’t been on for a couple of hours and all hell broke loose!

  • Anonymous

He may not even be a 4!

I just said that yesterday or the day before in a post here. Even if Yogi signs, there isn’t another true point guard on the roster.

  • Anonymous

I hadn’t even thought of that aspect. You’re right, recruiting takes up major manpower, and the majority of the assistant coaches’ work at this point will be maintaining relationships because there won’t be a lot of spots open (until guys start leaving early for the NBA.)

Thanks for keeping Louisville afloat economically with your food choices. Ha.

I think MillaRed and I deserve some credit for these two commitments, as we were discussing in yesterday’s posts how there hadn’t been any action in the ’13 class. Clearly CTC is reading and listening to us, I’m sure of it (and I do believe I also suggested this summer running a zone with Watford’s long arms out front.)

  • It depends on if Buss can be a combo guard that can successfully handle the ball when Yogi is on the bench. Blackmon, Jr. comes in at PG for 2014… so we only have a “true pg gap” for 2013.

  • I forgot about his Magic-Johnson-like ballhandling ability…

  • If you think moving Watford to the 3 was nice, just wait until IU puts the 6’10” Lyles at point guard in 2014…

  • I still think we need another pg. What if in that 2013 season Yogi rolls an ankle has to miss some time? There won’t be another pg on the entire roster and that has the potential to be a monster season for IU.

I just don’t like the idea of a combo guard with some handles being the pg.

I just got on the first time today Marcus. After I changed my shorts I was thinking the same thing. We just talked about these guys yesterday.

I have never seen anything like this at Indiana. Think about it. Not only are we completely LOCKED IN on 4 and 5 stars, but they are good kids. That’s the kicker.

I don’t know what to say about Coach right now. I am all starry eyed liked a 5 year old looking at Santa. Christmas just came early folks! I hear sleigh bells! Woo hooooooooo!

Indiana kids have been winning titles for other schools for too long. Now it’s time for Indiana kids to win titles for Indiana. Wow this team is gonna be strong in a couple years. I am a fairly cynical person on a normal basis and this recruiting train is barreling down the track and all things are good. I know Crean’s record is squeaky clean so lets keep it that way and keep these kids rolling in. Yogi and Harris next. Then 2013 National Title. I’ve been kind of laughing off the return to titles on posts but for goodness sake if you’re getting the top guys in Indiana year in and year out you can’t help but win a title at some point. KY, UNC, Duke, they all poach from Indiana. No more the borders are closed. This is Fantastic. Unreal.

Don’t forget Yogi, he’s our main target right now. I know everyone thinks it’s a done deal but lets get him committed first and then celebrate.

Things are looking so good right now it is amazing.

The best thing is that the team we have now just came out and played a fantastic second half. They have come out of each of the last two games on fire after the half and with shut down D. Things are good and getting better.

  • I’m with you, but I think we’re more in need of a big than a PG, since all we’ll have as a legit 5 is Jurkin from 2012-? As you already pointed out, Lyles probably won’t be a true 5. I’m also hoping that Buss takes Crean’s advice to heart and works on his handles so he could be a reasonable back-up PG at the next level. And what if we get Harris and he can also handle the ball? Again, ideally, we’d get a back-up PG, but if it comes down to a big and a point, I’d lean toward the former.

(You know what’s awesome? Instead of begging anyone and everyone to come to IU, we’re now talking about who we’d like as our back-up PG for a season 3 years away. Ha ha ha, oh my, how things have changed in just the past 2 months!)

  • Apparently Crean was a very, very good boy this year. (My only problem with the Santa analogy is that Calipari hasn’t gotten a lump of coal yet…)

  • Anonymous

That is a sign of great coaching.

Spare the lump of coal—I’d prefer he get sanctions for Christmas.

L’ville in down their with pUKe in my book but I will have to say that Pinto has them looking pretty good and they are fairly young.

So Yogi commits on Wednesday and all eyes turn to Gary Harris. This recruiting roll is unreal.

The pumpkin pie will taste a bit sweeter this year in the Crean household.

Props to all who have not lost faith.

    Co-dy Zel-ler is a much better chant than Da-vid Wil-liams!

  • MillaRed

Once again, we are getting “good kids.” Not to say all of Cal’s kids are
bad. But frankly, Wall and Cousin’s made me want to puke!

  • Plane1972

I like what you’re saying AJ, but CTC will have to continue recruiting. He can’t be caught with his pants down if some of these guys end up changing their minds, or Crean changes his. We still have nearly 4 years until we see the likes of Lyles and Blackmon and 3 for Hartman and Davis. It will happen at some point that an early commit will not work out for one reason or another. But, this is all great news. Sorry if I sound like a Debbie Downer. The last thing I want to do is rain on this glorious parade.
