A quick update on Yogi Ferrell

by in Recruiting | November 1st, 2010

Lost a bit among the Hanner Perea commitment and the official visits of Austin Etherington and Cody Zeller this past weekend was the fact that IU’s primary point guard target, Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell, snuck in a quick unofficial visit on Saturday.

The 2012 Park Tudor guard, who said a prior obligation prevented him from attending Friday’s “Night of the Living Red,” joined the aforementioned prospects at the IU-Northwestern football game.

“It was a lot more fun with Hanner, Austin and Cody down there,” Ferrell told Inside the Hall of the experience in Bloomington, adding that it was “pretty much all the same” as his previous trips.

In an interview last spring, Ferrell’s father Kevin told Zach Osterman that Indiana wasn’t recruiting Yogi quite as heavily as a few other schools. That’s no longer the case and it’s become clear in recent months that Ferrell is IU’s most coveted recruit at the point guard position.

“They’re just showing a lot more love,” he said. “The coaches are coming out, seeing my open gyms, talking to me about being a leader if I come to Indiana. They’re definitely recruiting me more than they used to be.”

Like many who follow the program closely, Ferrell will be keeping an eye on the Zeller decision, which is expected to come sometime next week with the early signing period beginning on Wednesday, November 10.

He admitted that Zeller’s announcement could play a factor into his decision, which he’s doesn’t expect to make until sometime next year.

“It would affect me and where I’m going,” he said. “But I’m just going to look at what’s best for me, really.”

For now, the immediate focus for the five-star floor general is the upcoming high school season and another trip to the Class 2A State Finals at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Park Tudor fell in last year’s title game, 41-38, to Wheeler and should get a boost from two newcomers.

“The two freshman, Trevon (Bluiett) and Troy (Spears), are definitely going to help us on the offensive end,” Ferrell said. “We’re really small right now. We’re actually a really fast team. Those two guys should definitely help us.”

Yogi, come to IU. The whole Hoosier Nation really wants you to play for IU. You will be a key to turn this great program around!

  • Yogi Kelin Zeller

I guess it boils down to this….IU gets Zeller, IU gets Yogi…simple….”It would affect me and where I’m going,” he said. “But I’m just going to look at what’s best for me, really.”

  • BaseballBuc

How good would that pick and roll game be.

  • Anonymous

I don’t want him to wait till next year!

  • Anonymous

I really want Zeller and I know he will be good, but I’m not sure he will be the greatest IU since Cheany or anything. I know is a big recruit, but isn’t Hanner a bigger draw for Yogi to come play?

  • hoosier-n-ohio

PLus you will get a key to Cook Hall open 24/7 ” IT’S INDIANA”

from what i can tell its not talent level that draws yogi to cody, its their friendship. yogi’s backround to his twitter (as most of us have seen) is alternating pictures of him and cody. they are just really tight. who wouldnt want to play, compete and WIN with one of their best friends

  • SteelHoosier

Does he realize that he in addition to a great education, great school and countless adoring fans, he will instantly get a popular bar and grill named after him in Bloomington? He’ll get no benefits from it, but it would be cool to drive by and say: “They named that bar after me (before I was born)”.

  • Anonymous

Okay that does make sense, why are they not a package deal then? IU seems to be the only place they can go and play together

  • kentuckyhoosier

nice!!! I remeber those !! As do we all . I love watching him still , pretty damn proud of him

  • kentuckyhoosier

Seriously , Yogi is already part of this “unofficial ” family that has essentially already formed . That family being the aau team that keeps making the visits to bloomington . Why else would Cody , Yogi , Hanner , etc keep coming ? Pull the trigger and enjoy the college life . It only happens once , Make the most of it with your friends ! Harris and Hollowell …you are next . Really men Indiana has a situation for you that is truly special and unheard of for you ….take advantage of it . If you dont , somebody will !

lol i was just about to post this when i saw you had already done so. good stuff
    GO EJ

oh…he also had one more monster dunk that game. on tim duncan. i thought it was better….is that on youtube?

  • Ryan Goods

I personally guarantee that if Cody commits to IU then Yogi will commit very soon after too because:
-Zeller’s decision has some influence on Yogi’s
-Yogi knows he wants to come to IU
-Most importantly, depending upon whether Roth uses his medical redshirt, there’s only going to be 1 or 2 scholarship offers available for Yogi and he doesn’t want to miss out

  • BaseballBuc

I heard that too but I haven’t seen it so I’m not sure. Feel free to post it if you find it.

“It was a fun time with Hanner, Austin, and Cody down there”. Well imagine how much fun they will have playing together here too. Once Cody announces next week it should influence Yogi to decide sooner than next year (I sure hope). Not only do they all play together for IUDL (Indiana Elite the IU Developmental League) these guys are all too close of friends to pass this opportunity up. Yogi is the leader we need at the 1 position that will hang #6 in Assembly Hall!

  • Brian

It’s just an unbelievable place to play, to live, to go to school… Basketball is King at IU, and you’d be sitting right up on that throne, Yogi.

  • Anonymous

What are the terms of this personal guarantee? Will you clean my house if he goes somewhere else?

  • Anonymous

Butler would be the other option. They are also after Yogi.

  • Anonymous

I like how he seems unphased. With his teammates drooling at the replay and jumping all over him, he’s just focused on the game.

  • Anonymous

Indy Star is reporting that Cody won’t announce his decision until next week.

  • hoostheman

    IUDL… Love that.

Patience is all we need right now. CTC is working some serious magic right now. In about 14 months CTC has gotten committments from AE, GMM, Jurkin, Buss, Hanner, Blackmon Jr, Lyles and CZ will be in just a couple weeks. Yogi may announce next year, but next year may turn out to be January 2011. Then there will be at least 1 more for 2012 class.

What is interesting is that we do not have a 2013 yet. Who will committ in that class? Those guys are going to board the IU train soon. The foundation is set from 2009 and 2010 classes. 2011 will be solid especially with CZ; 2012 is stacked; 2014 looks to be stacked. Within a year or so IU will be a top 3 Big 10 program again. 2013′s especially from Indiana will be crazy not to go to IU.

Isn’t it funny how Purdue has been winning a lot of games the past few years and they have fallen way behind IU in recruiting in the matter of months. When their Big 3 are gone….make that Big 2, they are in trouble.

Sounds like they are a package deal if Zeller signs with Indiana. The reason he says that it could affect him where Zeller decides is if Zeller doesn’t choose IU then Yogi is kind of left out in the cold since I don’t think he wants to go to Butler and I am not sure he has UNC as an option yet.

Indiana is the easy and right choice for both. Big week coming up.

  • Plane1972

I hope this kid’s not a primadonna. He is definitely a fine player and IU would be lucky to have his talents, but I just get a weird vibe and hope he is a good kid. Sorry to cast aspersions about a high school player who is getting his arse kissed left and right by big-time college coaches. The recruiting process is bound to distort one’s sense of reality, but he comes off a bit cocky. Perhaps I’m reading way too into it. Yogi, my apologies if I am off base here.

  • millzy32

Hanner is raw and aggressive and something that has been lacking at IU for a long time but Zeller is polished and has a great basketball IQ. Zeller means more to IU recruiting because he’s from Indiana and he’s going to be Indiana Mr. Basketball the third one in his family and it is time for IU to get a Zeller. It is huge for IU to get him. One other thing that matters a lot is that he’s coming in a year earlier too. IU needs to start winning sooner rather than later and getting Cody on board will help.

If Zeller signs you have to almost mark it down that Yogi will too and from there the rest is just gravy and we all will start to get greedy.

And, Greed for lack of better terms is good.

  • RobD

The reality is that he may have already decided he’s going to IU, but wants to enjoy the chance to take his 5 official visits like any other recruit. It’s a tough balance to pull off as a college coach in recruiting–you get kids who won’t be coming to your school but they just want to go visit some of their boys in other areas of the country for free.

Even if Yogi were a primadonna I doubt Crean permits any doubt about who’s in charge. Of the things he learned from Izzo, I’m sure that’s one of them.

  • Outoftheloop

You said: “Yogi is the leader we need at the 1 position that will hang #6 in Assembly Hall!” But Yogi seems to prefer to be the “courted star”, rather than the “leader”. I certainly understand his waiting until after Cody makes his decision, which I think will come in the next week, and be for Indiana! But after Cody says yes, Yogi needs to say yes, and start working on Harris and Hollowell to fill out his 2012 class at IU. If Harris and Hollowell both say that they want to commit to IU before Yogi gets around to committing, I think that they are too good to put on “hold” until Yogi decides. Yogi knows all about Indiana basketball and the university. He either feels “It’s Indiana” in his gut now or he never will truly get it! The only reason to delay after the Zeller decision would be to get an offer from some other school that he really wants. So get ready to grab that IU scholarship Yogi, because some other top 50 recruit might decide that “It’s Indiana”! As of now the “leader” for the class of 2012 is Ron Patterson!

  • MillaRed

That was nasty with a capital N. The thing I always liked about Gordon is the guy is so humble. He didn’t celebrate, didn’t look up at the replay to admire himself. He’s just a solid kid.

  • millzy32

It seems like Yogi is a little cocky but I think you need that in a point guard. He is undersized and has had to fight to get where he’s at and I’m sure he has a little chip on his shoulder. I wish Hulls was a little more cocky, I think it would do him some good.

It’s November people next Friday starts the season. The second game is Wright State and they are usually not a pushover.

Need to be 6-0 going into the BC game. Can’t wait to watch some hoops.

  • Jubilee

Yogi is what you need in a leader……..he has the confidence to make his team win in any game…

This is the PG we need……maybe our most important recruit at the moment (at least right next to Zeller)

  • Anonymous

Yogi is that true point guard type of player that IU is going to need to win a championship. Just as much a piece of the puzzle as everyone else. He is a player that has those highly talented PG skills that IU does not currently have or have committed. Probably a four year player too which is a huge plus.

Cody Zeller means more because he WILL PLAY NEXT YEAR!

  • 11th and Done (Dunn)

i saw one website that said he had interest in butler, don’t remember which one. also, i have not even seen that unc is an option. imo, he follows cody to indiana or butler. if cody goes to unc who knows? maybe iu?

  • http://www.vccm.net/ iubase

The table will be set when CZ commits…Yogi is no fool. I like his attitude. He would be the conductor – and the music will be sweet. Sweet 16, final four, and banner #6. Then “Kelin Harris” can work his charm on the next unsuspecting recruit….do you play the flute?

  • Anonymous

wish he was on the Pacers

HOLD ON A SEC! With all the attention given to Zeller and Yogi ( and they both deserve it) let’s not forget some other very top prospects… all who have Indiana on their list and are in the 2012 Class

Ricardo Ledo is ranked by Rivals as the #7 overall prospect for 2012 He’s a guard out of Barringon RI 6’5 175. IU has not made hiim an offer but other schools have.

Alex Murphy is ranked right next to Hanner Perea as a Forward from Massachusetts

Kaleb Tarczewski plays with Murphy. He’s a Center and ranked #13 overall

Why aren’t we giving these guys some attention? If I were one of them and reading about all these other recruits IU is looking at — I might feel neglected.

  • Hoosierswain

Does anyone know what five started for Indiana Elite?

  • Outoftheloop

They are being neglected on purpose. IU now has 3 and can only take 2 more for 2012, We have 3 great prospects who are very solid about Indiana-Yogi, Harris, and Hollowell. We are totally focused on getting 2 of those 3. But if time slips by and anyone in this group of three seems to be waiting for another school to offer them, then that will change in a hurry!

  • Jubilee

Those 3 are long shots compared to Harris, JH, and Yogi

  • dribbles

I wonder if anyone has taken Yogie to Yogie”s? I think that would be kind of cool for him.

  • Anonymous

I think you bring up a good point. If there are other players out there with similar or even better skills, then I am not sure why IU wouldn’t give them some attention/offers at the same time. I’d think it may help with insurance if your main guys decide to go elsewhere, and if they want to commit first then you still get a skilled player that you need and can still play in the system.

If IU continues to wait for some of these players then they may end up losing out on better talent in the long run???

  • Anonymous

by the way I am not referring to Zeller’s spot – that is one that I’d save, but the other spots – like I said if you can target similar talent why not?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_YIKRELENCTUH2BHUZTMUGVGSS4 Steve

Fair enough Jub and Out. Perhaps IU doesn’t have the resources to give these guys the attention and even though they have put IU on their list – perhaps you guys know they are long shots. I’m an IU Alum in Texas so I’m a long shot. Still it wouldn’t hurt Indiana Fan Websites such as this to at least post a thread on these guys.

Remember as a group they are rated higher than the three we are currently hunting.
