Video: Weekend visitors

  • 10/27/2010 11:39 am in

Three of Indiana’s top recruiting targets, Cody Zeller, Hanner Perea and Yogi Ferrell, are expected to be in Bloomington this weekend for Friday’s “Night of the Living Red” scrimmage. The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7PM with Trick or Treating and the scrimmage will begin at 8PM.┬áZeller will be on his official visit (as will commit Austin Etherington) and Perea and Ferrell will both be on unofficial trips.

Here’s some YouTube-age from each player to get you ready for one of the biggest weekends for IU recruiting in recent memory:

Well with the limited invitation for this weekend its very obvious where Crean is heading. I was a little surprised Howell isn’t coming. If we get Cody and Yogi and Hanner follows then we have the oversign which will be reserved for Harris and Howell is out of luck. Howell had his choice between OSU and IU and very shortly both schools will be on to others.

Kids if you don’t get on the train with a winner like Crean it will leave without you for sure. Opportunities always fly away with the wind so take advantage of them while you can.

I agree that his athletic ability will carry him through these weaknesses in his game. Isn’t he only 16-17 and hasn’t he only been playing basketball 4 years? I saw the potential for a nice hook shot starting to develop–although I did not like the spin to the right shoot with the right post move.

That kid can jump through the gym…let’s get HP jumping through AH!

i did not know what you were referring to. post a link. it just stuck in my head because he did not know how to pronounce “kelin”. is it kay-lyn, kay-lean, kee-lyn, or kee-lean?

  • 11th and Done (Dunn)

i basically posted the exact same thing for the exact same reasons as you a few threads back. MMJ homecoming!

I love Yogi’s play in the video and how he likes to “lead to win”. There was one personality issue I was slightly concerned about…

    1. He thinks he has no weaknesses in his game.
    2. He thinks he is the best point guard.

    in reality…

    1. No player is perfect and should work towards continuous improvement. He can be a streaky shooter and he could work on extending his shot (ex: to Gordon range).
    2. He may be the best point guard in his class, but he certainly will not be the best point guard in the Big 10 entering his freshman year. Let’s be honest at 165 lbs soaking wet you are going to get pushed around in the physical Big 10 by stronger more experienced PG’s. Commit so you can hit the weights in Cook Hall YOGI!!

Haha, where did that come from? Any proof for this ridiculous claim?

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Yeah, he’s young and has only played for a few years so there’s plenty of time to develop some more moves to go with his limited skill set.

  • Yogi Kelin Zeller

I actually thanked dan for mispronouncing it as my boss I believe listens to his show and knows now I pronounce my name..(Key Lynn)….Dan butchers it every week but it is so OK.

Yes there is a Lingerie Football League and Yes it is on TV, but I don’t known when or what time. I just saw the commercial this weekend. WOW.

I know you said currently in BCS conferences, so I’m assuming that was covering a pre-Big East Louisville in 2005.

    unless you’re Bob Knight!

That costume must be equipped with overalls and Billy Bob teeth

  • Yogi Kelin Zeller

Talked to a coaching buddy of mine who coached against Yogi…he said Yogi plays like he is the best player on the court the entire game. With a TON of confidence…up 20 or down 20

  • I’m alright with him saying this. You dont show weakness to the world in sports. And would you want someone playing for you that didnt think they were the best. That would step on to the floor and immediately admit defeat?

    Dammit, you stole my line!

  • Yogi Kelin Zeller

    Here is a helluva backcourt….

Ron Patterson this summer says he is the best shooting guard in the state in ANY class
Yogi says, haven’t seen any PG’s that are better than me in my class or that are really good, also not aware of any weaknesses he has….

    Damn I love these kids…..

I don’t even know if that’s a negative. Too many guys want to shoot threes who have no business doing so. I’d be thrilled with someone that athletic who wanted to stay near the basket and mercilessly drive home put-back dunks on errant shots.

One side of the gym yells one name, the other side of the gym yells the other in response kind of like the old “Tastes great/Less filling” chants we used to do on the Viking ship at Kings Island when I was younger.

    Just Googled it—MTV2

Touche, but that man had a hold on this fanbase like no one ever will again, and one that’s fairly well unrivaled, I would argue.

  • 11th and Done (Dunn)

holy crap. i just you-tubed a commercial for it. zoinks!!!

  • 11th and Done (Dunn)

ha! i really yelled “tastes great” at HH. no responses, just a few random chuckles.

  • LTTelamon

While I understand your concern, I’ve never heard anything about the kid that indicates he’s not coachable. Confidence is one thing, but if he’ll listen to the coaching staff, it’s not arrogance.

Now, there’s no need for name calling here. Marcus always has interesting things to say..and besides, you hit “t” instead of “d” …just sayin’

The one thing that sticks out in my mind from those clips concerns Hanner Perea. I’ve admired his impact as an exciting athlete who gets to the rim and blocks shots (between HP and Jurkin, our opponents will need therapy because NOTHING is going through the hoop for them). Here’s what bugs me: HPs little one-handed shot from around 14ft almost seems like a lucky heave from his palm instead of a deliberate motion where the left hand steadies and directs the ball. Or was i hallucinating the poor form?

Well, if Hollowell (I assume that’s who you mean) and Harris both wanted to commit, Crean would make it work, or someone would transfer. I don’t want to make it sound like Indiana is going to be an NBA factory of sorts, but it’s pretty hard to not offer a 5 star recruit if he wants to come, even if the scholarship is not readily available.

  • Anonymous

I noticed that too. I’m sure he is getting by, at least to some degree, on his freakish athletic ability and will need to continue to work on his offensive game, other than the dunks he seems to have that part of his game down quite well I’d say. The raw material is all there he just needs someone that is experienced in taking a diamond in the rough and polishing it up into something special. Let’s see do we know anybody like that ? I know let’s ask DWade if he might know someone like that.

  • Marsh21

They won’t have a chance to both commit if Yogi and Hanner pull the trigger. Crean will do an oversign but I highly doubt he would take two because that means two must go. Our class at that point would be great even without one of them.

This is a great problem to have by the way.

  • Plane1972

Yeah, I have to agree. Butler’s best would outclass many, many other institutions of higher learning. Not saying that IU and UNC are any better or worse, but Butler is definitely not second-class. Great school.

  • iupawpaw

it be sweet-cz,yf,hp,jh. what a dream. make it come ctc

no problem—it’s nothing my mother wouldn’t call me!

The US News and World Report college rankings as of 10/27/2010 under National Universities lists 1) Harvard, 2) Princeton, 3) Yale…30) UNC-Chapel Hill…75) Indiana U-Bloomington; while under Regional Universities-Midwest1) Creighton, 2) Butler, 3) Drake, 3) Xavier, 5) Valpo…I know of no way to evaluate with factual type of information the claim of superiority. As to undergraduate business programs: 1) U Penn, 2) MIT, 3) Cal-Berkley…T-7) UNC-Chapel Hill…T-10) Indiana U-Bloomington…Butler does not rank high (top 25) in undergraduate business programs.

  • millzy32

If we are speaking about academics and ultimately jobs outside of the sports world then I would agree that Butler would rank fairly competitively on a very localized basis, aka Indianapolis. The other two schools would be recognized more throughout the nation. Lets face it no one outside of Indiana knows what Butler is or where it is located. If you want me to do an impromptu pole I’ll go ask my coworkers since I’m in northeast OH.

I stayed up late last night painting 13 posters (front and back) for this upcoming epic weekend.
hopefully they will make the guys feel special and leave somewhat of an impact of that Hoosier Hospitality we are known for!

  • optimistic

does anybody know if this is in violation of any recruiting rules? i have:

    “We<3 C O D Y Z E L L E R" and "Y O G I F E R R E L L" spelled out on 11 different posterboards.

I also have a poster with Hanner Perea's name on it and one with AE's name on it.
Does anyone know if my posters would be disallowed inside Assembly Hall and if they are, any other ideas??

According to this article … as long as the University has absolutely nothing to do with it, then I am in the clear… but I don’t know, I don’t want to push the envelope too far
