Indiana “very high” on Harris’ list following weekend visit

  • 10/03/2010 10:37 pm in

Indiana fans can thank their sellout crowd for keeping Gary Harris from IU’s open gym on Saturday — he was stuck in traffic.

Harris eventually made it down to Bloomington in time for the IU-Michigan game, and got to take in all the festivities with the current team and a bevy of talented fellow recruits. The day after his trip to Bloomington, Harris had plenty of good things to say.

“I had a great weekend,” Harris told Inside the Hall on Sunday night. He said the visit gave him a feel for “what it’s like to be a part of Indiana basketball.”

Harris’ candor on the weekend, and on where Indiana stands with him right now in general, were both positive. More than that, they were reflective of what has become a common sentiment among several of the top players — particularly in-state — that IU is recruiting.

“What they’re trying to do is just great,” Harris said, noting that Indiana’s latest recruiting victories in the ’12 and ’14 classes have not gone unnoticed. “They’re building it up, so I mean, they’re going to have a team.”

One of Rivals’ highest-ranked Indiana prospects in that 2012 class (Harris is the No. 5 shooting guard and No. 24 nationally) said IU is ” very high on my list,” right now, as well.

“Every time I go there,” he said, “I like it even more.”

Hoosier Hysteria is not in the cards for Harris, however. Instead, Harris will head to Purdue country, but not for a visit. The 6-foot-4 guard is also a member of Hamilton Southeastern’s football team, currently 6-1, and the Royals play at McCutcheon on Oct. 15.

It’s also unclear if football will be a determining factor at all in Harris’ final decision. He’s no slouch on the field, though even the player has said he expects his future to lie in basketball. But as to the idea of playing two sports in college, a la James Hardy or, dare I say it, Kipp Schutz, Harris spoke reservedly.

” I’ve thought about it, but it would be very hard,” he said.

Overall, Harris said he’s come away more and more impressed with Indiana’s program, both in its current form and in its efforts to recruit into an incredibly talented generation of Indiana basketball players.

“They’re building it up, so I mean, they’re going to have a team,” Harris said. “(Crean)’s really making a statement now.”

Watch out, there is a big green monster hanging over GH’s head! He also loves MSU, his coaches have relationships with MSU’s coaches and Izzo is putting on a full court press including attending his football games! Someone posted he won’t be at IU’s Midnight Madness. If he is at MSU’s MM, case closed. Our future recruiting clases are full, so GH is the only recruit TI is focusing on prior to 2013. Should be an interesting recruiting battle!

Wow. Well done gentlemen. Well done, indeed.

Harris, Patterson, Hollowell, DSR, and Yogi (2012 class) are all guys we want. Another way to look at this is that if they aren’t at IU then they’re probably at Purdue, Michigan State, Ohio State, Illinios, or other places giving us fits. They’re Indiana kids, they should be at Indiana University.

I believe that he isn’t attending because he has a football game that night. I agree that MSU is a threat, but I sure would like to see him in the Cream and Crimson. I feel he just has tremendous upside, and an already solid all around game. Adding him with Buss, Jurkin, Perea, and Yogi would be amazing.

I like your thinking. Hitting the like button on this one was just not sufficient enough to say how much I agreed so typing this comment is kinda like me giving it two likes.

The possibilities are endless and all fun. Maybe this should be a whole separate topic by itself.

I would much rather have Harris. Not only is he ranked higher as a player but I get this JD vibe when I see Hollowell’s interviews. JD always came across as arrogant and disinterested in coming to IU. He never said it but I felt like that is what came across with his body language.

Great (original) Star Trek analogy. You sound like someone that has watched his fair share of Star Trek reruns. Now I’m starting to understand why we were on the same wavelength on the UK being nuked from outer space thing.

So are to conclude that Calislimy is Khan ?

I think Hollowell has expressed more love to IU than JD… but I know where you’re coming from on this one. It’s the whole ‘girl in a bar’ thing again… I want the girl who wants me, not the one who’s flirting with every other guy and sending me mixed signals.

I’d take Hollowell, Harris, Yogi, Perea, RP and Jurkin.

  • I’m guessing he asked the either/or question because signing 5 for 2012 might be tough (only sign 2 for ’11 and then use the oversign for ’12), and I’m assuming that one of those scholarships will be reserved for Hanner. I’d loooove both, but it might come down to either/or.

  • Indeed, recruiting is a zero-sum game: our gain is somebody else’s loss.

There’s gotta be a better method than that one that won’t scatter excrement for miles around

Eph521 I certainly agree that Hollowell has expressed more love than JD and I would further that by saying that he seems to be warming up to IU more than he was just a few months ago. Just in general, I got that vibe from his recruiting videos posted this summer.

YKZ – my personal opinion is I hope IU cooled after DSR’s tweet from the first day of the most recent contact period where he said something like “Shoutout to Xavier. I see who wants me to come play for them.” Does he know we don’t put names on the back of the jerseys?

  • 11th and Done (Dunn)

according to rivals, yogi does not have an offer or any interest shown in him from nc. i’m sure he is basing his decision on zellers. he will follow him to butler or iu, but if zeller goes to nc where will yogi end up? is indiana a lock?

  • Diesel

Kelin – did you see that Royce Waltman got Leary’s gig alongside Don Fisher? Not sure what to think about that…

Also heard on my “Ride” home that JMV will be live from Cook Hall on Weds 3-6 PM.

  • Yogi Kelin Zeller

That DSR tweet really turned me off on a nice kid with alot of talent…similar to Jeremiah Davis. I don’t know why some of these kids play these games during what I think is one of the best times of their lives. If a school doesn’t visit you on the first day, don’t tweet about it just put in the work……yet Crean invited an injured DSR to IU’s elite camp from what I heard. The interest was there for sure, but I keep saying…the train has left..you are on or off.

Didn’t hear that about JMV at Cook Hall….nice. I planned to leave indy for HH at 5pm, that may have just changed…I have a feeling it is going to be electric this year with the recruits, the return of Mo Creek, Vic Oladipo, and the return of the ‘student chants’

We could use a neutron bomb. Save the infrastructure, removes the populace.

Great game – except the end. Recruits had to love it. Big Time Football to go along with Big Time Basketball.

Yeah, but cockroaches (coachroaches) survive that stuff.

  • Plane1972

Had not heard about Royce, Diesel. I think we will end up loving him in that role. Great guy and good basketball mind.

  • IUcompsciguy

Since GH will be playing football that night, he will not be at IU’s or MSU’s MM (check the article above)…so I guess case not closed. MSU is a big player here for sure, but IU has now (at least) pulled even in this race (a Peegs article also confirms this.) BTW, Coach Crean has also attended GH’s football games, but I agree that this battle should be a good one.

  • Ryan Goods

too bad were only going to have 4 scholarships and 1 oversign for 2012. The only way we have 6 is if Cody doesn’t commit and I think we can all agree none of us want that to happen.

  • I like the upraising of this athlete. I don’t like the EG comparisons but he is a star athlete.

  • N71

Isn’t MSU down to an oversign for their 2012 class? And with that they have several other players that could take the slot. I also don’t see Izzo screwing his padawan in coach Crean. Izzo has many options so I doubt he’d take the option that hurts his friend. For Harris he would have a 1.5 hours drive home from Bloomington or a 5 hour drive from East Lancing. I like MSU if my other option was Illinios for example but not over Indiana. Indiana and Gary Harris are a very good fit in my opinion and I think Gary agrees.

What I’m hearing is that Adreian Payne is a two year player and has told TI he is gone after his sophomore year, thus freeing up a scholly for GH. So you think TI should back off a key recruit becuse he and Crean are buddies? Why doesn’t Crean back off? You make IU sound like a charity case. Does IU back off a recruit because Purdue is hot on him? Have you ever played one on one with your best friend? You tried to win, right, but played fair and square. Did the outcome of that game affect your friendship? TI and TC are two of the most honorable men in the game today. They will go head to head for GH and whoever wins, I guarantee the other will call with congratulations.
