Video: IU basketball fall workouts

by in Video | September 16th, 2010

The follow popped up on the IU Athletics YouTube channel earlier today (looks like the sound got removed for copyright reasons, but it’s definitely worth a look):

  • IU_Fan_99

what does climbing up a grassy hill sideways do for your game? just curious…

  • Anonymous

wow…some of these guys move like the exorcist girl

  • IU_Fan_99

Azur, next mix-tape you put together, consider this song… loved the Onyx on Mo’s:

The moral of the story here is be prepared to carry JR on your back all year long. Seriously though, these are some tough workouts. Elston is looking huge for one. It looked like he was working out with about 300 pounds on the bench and getting after it on his power clean. And trust me stairs and hills make the cardio exercises grueling. They will be fit that is for sure.

    HAHA. good one

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

I think the audio should be replaced by the sound of Jordan Crawford whining.

  • Casey B.

Anyone else think Watford looks a lot more cut? Or have I just not seen him in a while…

  • Anonymous

Is that Mo Creek doing the same weight right after Elston in the video? Man, I can’t wait to see him back in action, after a year of getting to really analyze the game from a coaching standpoint and build up strength. Really sucked his injury forced him to miss a lot of last year, but if ever there’s a huge silver lining, he’s really got the potential to surprise people this year. (Yes, even after dropping 30 on Kentucky, I wonder if he was only just scratching the surface!)

  • CSHoosiers

I was thinking the same thing! They all look a lot thicker and stronger, and I think this will help the team out tremendously! Last year we just out muscled down low. We had great hustle but that can only get you so far. You need some physicality and looks like we have some now!

  • Go2iu

    be more phyically fit

  • HoosierDavey

My initial reaction is “why do we care about watching the basketball team run stairs and climb hills and lift weights?” My next thought: cause it’s Indiana!

  • marsh21

Great workouts and yes Elston is freaking huge but Watford and others looked much bigger as well. I’m all for these however I think climbing the stairs with someone on your back is asking for an injury. I guess the doctor signed off on these workouts but climbing 100 stairs while you have 200+ pounds on your back? Wow that’s taking it to next level.

This should be required viewing material for any student that can’t bother to show up by game time, any alum who won’t STAND UP during the game, and any supposed IU fan who boos our team during a loss.

I appreciate the hard work these guys are putting in during the offseason. There’s only one way to get IUBB back on top, and this video is evidence that the staff and players realize that.

  • Yogi Kelin Zeller

+ Derek Elston is a big SOB
+ Christian and VJ has picked up some pounds
+ Glad to see JR out there and recovered…(there I complimented him)
+ Will Sheehey is bigger than I thought
+ Victor going up the hills first does not surprise me

  • Yogi Kelin Zeller

Dude thanks for making me spit water on my keyboard while reading this….Nice Jordan Crawford whining…

  • Baseball Montgomery Buc

The part starting at 4:14 with I think Daniel Moore, then Elston and Watford, had me laughing. I don’t know why, I think it’s because Elston looks like he’s trying to bang his head on the bar. It’s good to see the team working hard though.

  • Kimjck100

    Amen to that!

  • Anonymous

I didn’t spit water on my keyboard but I’d say it is a safe bet that anybody that was asleep isn’t anymore.

As Sammy Sosa illustrated a few years back, you can get injured while sneezing (I think he ended up on the DL). If they were doing that at night in a thunderstorm, then yes, it’s an unnecessary risk, but at what point do you stop exercising? I like the toughness + togetherness aspect of it. My only concern is WHO IS CARRYING GUY? That’s asking for an injury!

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

Genius move by the IU Sports Information people to release this video, maybe some of it is just to be funny, but I was surprised at the couple somewhat negative comments posted. These guys are busting it out there, those look like great workout!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Builds muscles that we don’t have and actually does provide stability and injury avoidance. We used to do that in football and it works different areas around your knees that seem to build some strength around those joints.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Yes, that was Mo and man I was thinking the exact same thing!!! That’s a lot of weight for a sophomore guard to be pushing up but he’s had several months to do nothing but work his upper body. Hopefully it doesn’t affect his shot.

Also, I mentioned before that I saw DE at Castleton Square not so long ago and man that boy looked huge! I watched him a few times in high school and he was not that big! He is man size big now. That’s great for his game as long as it doesn’t affect his shot as well.

  • IU_Fan_99

    thanks!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Oh, I HATE BOO-ERS!!! Yes, get off your fat lazy butt and cheer for your team because I’m getting off mine (and, yes, it’s fat and lazy as well)!

Don’t boo your team! That’s the one thing I learned at the 98 Cubs playoff game against Atlanta. Following a sweep (loss obviously) in the playoffs, Cubs fans gave the team about a 10 minute standing ovation. Most of that is because they were just thrilled the Cubs actually made the playoffs, but part of it is just a love for their team that still exists despite tough times.

IU has always personified “class” to me so I think the fans should carry themselves in the same way!

  • Anonymous

my thoughts exactly. It seemed a little lame and maybe boring but I watched the whole thing and just got pumped about the season starting.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Victor must have come to IU in incredible shape because he was breezing through those cardio/stair drills! Wow!

  • Anonymous

Wonder if some of these workouts were new and from our new S & C coach. He worked with alot of football players in the past I believe.

Someone help me. Was I not looking close enough, has Tom P. changed that much or was he not in any of this video ?

Really liked what I seen out of VO in this video and what I seen didn’t surprise me just reinforced what I have thought all along about him. Diamond in the rough ? We all know what is usually said after the diamond in the rough comment too.

Didn’t see Crean anywhere in any of it but then again I have only watched it one time. Probably off somewhere planning his CZ, YF and HP strategy.

The football players that were watching were probably saying that they were glad Crean wasn’t their coach but come this fall and winter they will be wishing that he WAS their coach.

I certainly thought so. While everybody getting bigger and stronger is what is best for this team CW getting bigger and stronger along with TP getting smaller and stronger may have been the two things that were the most needed.

  • Ryan Goods

VO going up the hill first doesn’t surprise me at all either. I’ve been watching some highlights of his game in high school and man this kid is crazy athletic. Perfect game for IU’s run-n-gun offense. I bet he average’s at least 1 fast break dunk a game as a freshman

  • Ryan Goods

I can’t wait to see Vic play. He’s supposedly a little rough around the edges and doesn’t have tremendous skill, but man he is crazy athletic. Every steal and defensive rebound, I’ll be looking for him at the other basket waiting for the long pass

  • stonaroni

I noticed it in CW but more in his legs and rear. Hopefully he will have a better base this year in the paint. All the guys looked better except for Hulls, he seemed to be struggling through the drills. VO is a freakish athlete.

  • Anonymous

If that’s Watford carrying Rivers (2:00) his calves look a lot bigger; and he beat the guards in his group handily in the crawl up the hillside!
Victor looks like he could run the 400 hurdles—have fun chasing him on the break.
Pritchard’s quickness should be a lot better this season–he even looks thinner in the face.
I don’t want to catch a medicine ball thrown by Derek Elston. (and he looks like a recurring character on “Oz” throwing those weights up and down!)
Expect Mo to absorb contact in the lane and complete a good number of and-ones.
    NOBODY dogging it!

  • stonaroni

Elston will be an absolute beast by 2013. If he doesn’t play basketball professionally, he can wrestle professionally. Give him some boots, tights, another tat or two and some elbow pads and we have a WWE Superstar.

  • MillaRed

This has Army written all over it actually. I did my five years to include Airborne school and the bottom line is this…….weed out the weak. We went through such grueling workouts, the real “job at hand” was a piece of cake by the time our bodies were conditioned.

I loved every minute of this. Thx ITH.

  • Casey B.

They all just look more like men, and less like scared freshmen in over their heads. Hopefully that translates to the court. Can’t wait to see the team back in action!

  • Anonymous

can someone give me the names (and #s) of the current players on the roster. it’s for the next mix i’m making. (hopefully no one will pull a one ent and complain about it). i think i know all the scholarship players but its been confusing with so many walkons.

  • Casey B.
  • Casey B.

It’s nice to look at the roster and not see two baseball players and the Assembly Hall janitor as our reserves.

On another note — totally forgot about Jeff Howard. Is this guy going to have any sort of decent role on the team, or is he a body for the big guys to practice against? Curious…

  • Anonymous

thanks 4 the link. what happened to finky?

  • Anonymous

oh im dumb. he graduated woops. why am i not able to reply?

  • Yogi Kelin Zeller

I love basketball and I am glad I played when I did…..I don’t know if I could play now with what these guys are doing….Whatever happened to running suicides, jumping jacks, and running with ankle weights then taking them off and feeling like you could do a 720 dunk only to find out you can’t…

  • Gregorymetz

One thing is certain – we won’t be “out conditioned” too many times this year. These guys are tough!

  • http://www.vccm.net/ iubase

Casey – nothing wrong with baseball players(Quinn Buckner played) – I played and we even worked out occasionally – ran an occasionally lap. We would get tired watching RMK workouts…these workouts are grueling. Agree with the comments about Elston – he will be a force. Capo looked stronger and pritch, Mo also. Watford is getting stronger and the center looked agile for a big “Guy”. The boys are turning into men and now we are back in the heavyweight division (big ten) and should have the legs to press and finish. Great video…,

  • Anonymous

I walk the baseline to look at both teams before home games. I can already tell there is a huge difference in size of these guys. We lost many of our games last year in the second half. We wore down late in the games. I really don’t think that will be a problem this year. These guys will be better than a lot of people think.

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

I made a similar comment over on the YouTube site (before Alex posted this) and it got deleted by IU Athletics. They must not have laughed as hard as you guys.

  • millzy32

Although I like where your thought process is coming from I hate the analogy. Please don’t associate the Hoosiers with those lovable loser Cubs. IU wins championships, or used to and should be able to do so again in the hopefully near future and the Cubs, well, they are the Cubs and they lose games that’s just it plain and simple. Disclaimer: Go Redlegs win that division.

  • millzy32

He pretty much worked with all football players. He was a football strength and conditioning coach.

Get these guys strong. The shot will not be affected by adding some muscle and it’s good to add in the offseason so that they can focus on shooting and dribbling and setting non moving screens during the season.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I saw him once and he looked good. It was a sectional game against Carmel and he really dominated Hammons (though Hammons was younger). He moved good around the basket and crashed the boards, had a nice mid-range jumper and was a real good interior passer. I think if he had developed a little sooner he would have been a mid-major D1 player, maybe even a Butler type player, but either way he has a chance to develop into a player!

  • Wish

That’s some of the worst bench press form I’ve ever seen and that worries me. If you can’t lift correctly then you’re just hurting yourself. They are better off doing 135lbs under control for reps than what they were trying to bench in that video.

I didn’t think any of the guys looked like they had been chiseled out of stone but if I had to rate them then I’d say that Oladipo and Michel looked like they were in the best shape going up the bleachers.

I’d rather see these guys sprinting out 200′s and 400′s on the track but that’s just me. I’m in a ‘prove it to me’ mindset this season.
