Recruiting notes: Guerrero, Hollowell, Goff and more

+ Dustin Dopirak of The Herald-Times writes that Indiana is targeting 2011 California point guard Cezar Guerrero (pictured), a 6-foot point guard from Bellflower, California. The H-T also posted a mixtape of Guerrero. Korman is gone for a few weeks and now Dustin and Hugh Kellenberger are on a mixtape binge.

+ Jody Demling of The Louisville Courier-Journal noted that Tom Crean would be checking in with Hutchinson (KS) Community College forward Robert Goff this afternoon. Today was the first day of a four-week open contact period.

+ ESPN updated its rankings for 2012 and several players with IU interest are in the top 60. Gary Harris is No. 16, Yogi Ferrell is No. 21, D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera is No. 28, Hanner Perea is No. 42 and Jeremy Hollowell is No. 52. Commit Peter Jurkin is rated No. 53.

+ Hollowell will visit Indiana on September 18 according to Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star. The Lawrence Central forward recently sprained his ankle and will be on crutches for two weeks.

+ Excellent piece by our friend Pat Forde of ESPN.com on the Plumlee and Zeller families.

+ Evan Daniels of Scout.com reported that Smith-Rivera is down to six schools: Georgetown, Indiana, Miami (FL), Ohio State, Wake Forest and Xavier. The Musketeers were the only school to check in with Smith-Rivera on the first day of the contact period.

    2 guard/3 big lineups: Guy(c), Patterson(sg), Etherington(sg/wing), Zeller(C/PF), Yogi(PG), Guerrero(PG), Jurkin(C), Perea(PF),Goff(PF), Harris(SG), Hollowell(SF)More even amount of bigs vs smalls. Backing up positions.

  • RSDan

He was declared ineligible because of a transfer rule – changed schools within the same district.

  • stonaroni

We do need a PG. But, not one that comes in and adds depth. We have serviceable options. We need a PG like Yogi who is the #2 or #3 ranked at PG and will start from day one.

If bringing in depth steers away a great prospect, than I chose the prospect.

Unfortunately, we are out of options in the 2011 class for PG.

I am very concerned that Yogi may not be too high on IU since he visited last week.

  • Anonymous

I’m pretty sure Alex confirmed that Yogi did not visit IU last week. That was a false rumor that even Yogi acknowledged wasn’t true, hopefully that allows you to stay optimistic ;)

  • stonaroni

Historically he prefers the 3 guard. His recruiting would suggest a 3 guard. He wants AE to be a SG. He has VO and WS as SG. Buss is a SG. There is no room for any of these recruits to play down the road unless there are 3 guards. WS and AE are 6’5 and 6’6″ and fit in perfectly to a 3 guard system.

    Now I am getting confused!

A new PG next year in a two guard scheme leaves IU with Hulls, new PG and VJIII at PG; Creek, VJIII, VO, WS, AE, Roth at SG.

How do VO,WS,AE, and Roth develop? They can’t in a 2 guard scheme. There will never be enough PT.

CW at #3 and the only true SF. This is his true position and when he puts up 16ppg and 8 rpg this year, he may not be around very long. Then what???? A 3 guard system…right?!

Elston, Capo, TP and maybe CZ at #4

    Guy and TP at #5.

I say we need Goff immediately then so we have better options to back up Elston, CZ (if he comes) and Guy (who has yet to prove a thing offensively).

Seriously, we just made an offer to a PG that no other top 20 program has made an offer to.

  • marsh21

Our biggest hole is defense by far. No quality PG for sure but we must get better a defense this year. Last years D was pathetic.

  • millzy32

I think you’re hitting the nail on the head. He is getting the best players that he can get when he can get them regardless of need. Kinda like in the NFL draft, do you draft for need or best available player at any position. I say get players the rest will work itself out.

  • Anonymous

Joe Hillman was from California, and he was pretty decent!

  • Anonymous

Just ask Temple! (Although Cheaney did threaten to kill Criminalipari, so he’s not all bad.)

  • millzy32

Turnovers were atrocious. Nothing like watching four or five trips down the floor and seeing no shots occur. I think Ball Handling and fundamentals were the biggest weakness by far. D is great but with no O it’s pretty pointless.

  • Anonymous

Marsh, I think PG is our greatest need in terms of recruiting, based on who we’ve picked up so far and who we’re still after. I hope we land Yogi.

Having said that, I’m with you on the team defense needing to be better. Here’s hoping another year of experience and more good players will result in improved D. I think last year’s freshmen will understand the college game, B10 play better.

  • Anonymous

This is all kind of silly arguing against this guy. There are basically two “true” poinst on the roster, Hulls and Rivers (whether you like him or not, he’s a PG and he isn’t going anywhere this year.) That means next year, it’s Jordan, and only Jordan (yes, I know Verdell has played some point, but he’s not a true, 100% point guard.) Guys get hurt; guys get fouls; guys get tired; guys just simply have bad games. You need a back-up for all those reasons. So you might have a season with three point guards; big damn deal. I don’t think Guerrero would be any deterrent to Yogi because I would assume Yogi would be of the impression that Guerrero would be HIS replacement–maybe he’s not ever a starter, but I don’t see where it would be a bad thing to have a solid upperclassman coming in off the bench to run the team when you decide to give Yogi a break.

  • Diesel

Agreed. CTC made it a priority to go after Kyrie Irving because a PG is a huge need. He made it a priority to go after BJY because a PG is a huge need. And until we can get a PG who can penetrate and make good decisions (Rivers can penetrate, Hulls can make good decisions, neither can do both) this team will not be successful. I’m not sure if Guerrero is that guy, but we can’t wait until 2012 to start winning games. CTC has proven that he will go after players that will improve our team right now. Is Yogi better than Guerrero? If he is, then it won’t be a problem because we know CTC is looking to improve the team at all times.

By the way, I’m pretty sure the IU staff went to visit Yogi and Park Tudor today.

  • N71

Yogi ia getting close to pulling the trigger I believe and he could be bringing Cody along with him even though their in different classes. Both would have wonderful careers at IU and loved by the entire state (not West Lafayette though) for a lifetime to come. Isiah Jr. and I don’t have a comparison for CZ.

  • Anonymous

Good call about Crean being at Park Tudor today. I’ve read that elsewhere too.

Watching Yogi on Day 2 is a good sign!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

    A bigger, better Eric Anderson?

  • Anonymous

and then there’s the conversation about free throw shooting…..

  • marsh21

Man I do hope we get Yogi! Actually we have a lot of needs and all are important.

  • marsh21

I hope so. I feel like we are on the verge of several verbals. I think our 2012 class will be set by the end of November.

  • marsh21

I know but you’re talking about the 11 class where we have one spot open. IF Zeller pulls the trigger I would hate to kick someone off the team for a less than steller guard coming in. Only a true impact should replace on of the other players. I just feel like we can get along fine in 11 without a new point. I agree we need a true point who can cause havic in the lane and break down defenses. I would have liked a talent like Young but those guys are few and far between.

We will have one but it most likely won’t come until the 2012 class.

  • N71

    Not bad, I like it.

  • marsh21

Creans time to bring in another PG was this years class. I think 2011 is a wash at this point in terms of PG as there just isn’t anyone that would elevate our talent level that much in which we should boot someone else off the team for. BJ Young, YES, Guerrero, I’m not sure he’s worth the oversign. I’ve seen VJ take over games at times with the ball in his hand and there’s no question he can play point in my mind. We have two options for 2011 already.

VJ did it against Penn State on the road, Purdue at home and Minnesota at home. He took control of those games with the ball in his hands. I agree, it’s not his natural position but he’s certainly capable.

Yea that whole confrontation thing took a on a whole new meaning when Calipaycheck got the job of payroll master at pUKe. My admiration of Cheaney went up too about that same time.

  • stonaroni

I 100% agree with you….and, IU fans will see VJIII starting at PG.

VJIII can play point, check out this video

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIl6zfh3N70

  • stonaroni

I think CZ will be unlike any player IU has had. he can shoot, run, jump and pass and for 6″11″ he is deceptively quick.

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

It’s sad, but I can pretty much quote that entire movie. Ha ha, I even used it in class last semester for an example … thankfully the students had seen the movie (since it came out when most of them were 4).

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

I never liked Cheaney, but now that Calipari is at pUKe, I think I’ll change my tune.

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

I’d like to get him to visit IU before UCLA or UWash step up their game.

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

We also made an offer to BJ Young when he was only getting interest from Southern Illinois and Arkansas … Crean was ahead of the curve there (Baylor, Kansas, and others started showing interest AFTER we did), so I’m guessing he’s ahead of the curve here. UCLA and UWash are interested in Guerrero, and the last time I checked, those programs are the best the Pac10 has to offer. The dude was injured and then sat out a year … that obviously had something to do with the lack of offers.

As far as development, WS and maybe AE could play the 3 when CW is on the bench. They could also go small and move CW to the 4 for a quicker/pressing line-up. I think they’ll get their time on the court (and I think less playing time for Rivers will benefit WS and VO), and I’m fine with Roth not “developing” any further. He’s a one-tool guy (3 pointers) who’s slow-footed on defense and isn’t tall enough to play the SF, so he’s going to lose out to more athletic players unless he proves early on that his shot is working.

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

You speak as if Yogi is a lock for IU. I think he may be an IU lean, but if CZ goes elsewhere, then I think Yogi may as well. Therefore, we’d be S.O.L. for a PG. This Guerrero kid looks very skilled and giving him a year on the bench to develop (2011-12) isn’t a bad thing. Do I want Yogi more than I want Guerrero? Yes. But do I think we should put all our PG eggs in the Yogi basket? No.

And see my above posts as to why this kid hasn’t gotten offers from high-level programs. BJ Young wasn’t getting offers from high-level programs when we offered him, but I was okay with that because CTC has a good track record as an evaluator of talent. I have a feeling if this kid was from Indiana and not California, that people would be okay with us recruiting him (just like people wanted us to offer Dee Davis and the tiny kid from Warsaw).

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

    I’m with you 100%.

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

If Guerrero hadn’t been injured/sat out a year, he’d be a top 50 player and a top 10 PG. The kid is good. I can’t say if he’s better than Yogi, but he is good. His stock is rising fast and I think he’ll end up at a UCLA or a UWash type of program if we don’t land him (unless the early connections he’s made at WKY are too strong).

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

I know of at least one person in West/Lafayette that would love to see Yogi and CZ at IU…

  • Gustin

Loved what Coach Bennie Seltzer had to say about the big guy Guy. I hope his effort results in production on the court.

  • Jmfriedman

On a side note…. Remember when Bruce Pearl was considerred for IU?? Sounds like Sampson situation coming up for Tennessee… Not that I dislike UT, but they sure as hell better get the same sort of “crippling” punishment IU got. Overboard or not, it needs to be similar….

  • Jmfriedman

Kirk Haston with a stronger inside game and better at running the floor.

Knight’s tirades were well-documented, but I think Cheaney was worse, he just usually got a pass for some reason. Mark Macon almost died during his freshman year because of him. He had a rule that no one was allowed to speak on the team bus because everyone should have been focusing on the game; on the way to one game the bus was faulty and exhaust fumes were seeping inside, right where Macon was sitting and he was becoming overwhelmed by them but was so afraid of Cheaney and his rules that he wouldn’t say anything.

Good points–I didn’t consider it being at the expense of an existing player.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

WOW – What the heck??? I watched this video over and over again looking for something to tell me why we haven’t seen some of these things out of VJ3 and the best answer I can come up with is that he’s been put on a leash at IU. There’s incredible athleticism there, far more than I’ve seen the past two seasons, and I think based on this video that we may not have seen the best from VJ3 yet!!! Just imagine what type of player he’d be if he could combine some of the things he’s done the past couple years with some of the skills that we see in this video. He’d be an All-American!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Yeah, but I’m be thrilled if he had the type career Anderson had at IU. He led IU to a final four and was the West Regional MVP I believe. I think Zeller has a higher ceiling but if an Eric Anderson type career is the floor I’d be ecstatic!

  • Yogi Kelin Zeller

In the Guerrero 2011 debate…one thing to consider is, how similar is he to what BJ Young would have provided IU that we were all in love with.

+ Both players can play PG, moreso Guerrero
+ Both players can get into the lane
+ Both players are top 100 recruits, and could be ranked higher.

  • Luke72

Any of the incming or potiential incoming recruits that think that IU would hurt thier NBA value are dead wrong. Mo will be a lottery pick! He won’t be our last either! Not sure that any future Hoosier that comes in with the main focus on how high in the NBA draft is what we need to build our program back to the top. What we need are players that are willing to game in and game out put it all out there. Others need not apply!! We seem to have lost our posture with a couple of our recruiting efforts that seem to have been communicating that without them we just won’t make it. There’s lots of talent out there n now let’s see who wants to part of a winning team!!!

  • Anonymous

Have faith fellow Hoosiers, I think we will all be pleasantly surprised by how well Jordy runs this team. There’s more to being a true PG than speed. His decision making and ability to hit an open 3 will garner him many minutes at the point this next year and for the forseeable future. Don’t remember Coverdale being a speed demon but would anyone here trade him off those teams? All I’m sayin’ is trust in Jordy’s bball IQ apparently CTC does.

  • Casey B.

The last public comment Yogi made about his recruitment by IU was via Twitter. He stated:

“Just got done talkin with coach Crean….. It went really well.”

I think he’s still pretty high on IU.

  • Casey B.

I think much of that problem will be solved by Crean’s newly declared strategy that won’t feature JR as a primary ball-handler.

  • marsh21

I can only speak to what I’ve seen and I would much rather have BJ than Guerrero. Guerrero looks like he’s been watching “And One” games way too much! A little too tricky with the ball for my taste.

  • Diesel

UCLA doesn’t need him now that they have Carlino.
