Ron Patterson joins Indiana’s 2012 recruiting class

by in Recruiting | August 15th, 2010

Ron Patterson could have left the state of Indiana for college. But ultimately, he decided it would be best to stay home.

During his second visit this week to Bloomington, the Broad Ripple guard gave a verbal commitment to Tom Crean on Sunday afternoon.

“It was close to home,” Patterson told Inside the Hall of his choice to play for the Hoosiers. “I wanted to stay. After this visit, I knew I wanted to come.”

Patterson summed up Crean’s reaction to the news, which was delivered in person, with four simple words.

“He started going crazy,” he laughed.

The 6-3 guard, ranked No. 57 nationally by Scout.com, had offers from several schools including Tennessee, Xavier and Virginia Tech. But ultimately, Indiana, the first school to offer Patterson during his freshman season, won out.

He’s the second member of IU’s 2012 class, joining 7-footer Peter Jurkin, who committed on Monday at adidas Nations in Chicago.

With his decision out of the way, Patterson said he’d like to see one of his former AAU teammates join him in Bloomington.

“I’d like to see Jeremy Hollowell come play with me,” he said.

Here’s Inside the Hall’s scouting report on Patterson from the Kentucky Hoopfest:

It’s not difficult to become a fan of Patterson once you observe all of the intangibles he brings to the table. While others are focused on scoring as much as possible or attempting to throw down ridiculous dunks, Patterson sticks to the basics: hard-nosed defense, finding the open man, finishing in traffic and crashing the boards. His shot from the perimeter is also continuing to improve. He’s not the most highly sought after recruit Indiana is pursuing for the 2012 class, but he’s probably the best fit in terms of filling a need. And if he can develop the handle to run the point, that’ll make him even more valuable at the next level.

Report: Ron Patterson commits to Indiana

by in Recruiting | August 15th, 2010

Our friend Jody Demling of The Louisville-Courier Journal is reporting that Broad Ripple guard Ron Patterson has given a verbal commitment to Indiana.

Patterson, a 6-3 guard from the 2012 class, had been considered an Indiana lean and a recent unofficial visit apparently helped the Hoosiers pick up their second commitment in less than a week.

We’ll have more on this developing story very soon.

World Basketball Festival: Jerry Colangelo talks Eric Gordon

by in Former Hoosiers | August 12th, 2010

I’m in New York for a couple days for the World Basketball Festival. During today’s media session at Radio City Music Hall, I snuck in a question to USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo about what he’s seen from Eric Gordon, and what his chances are of making Team USA as they trim the roster down from 15 to 12 soon as the World Championships approach at the end of the month.

The squad is guard and wing-heavy, so Gordon has some competition to make the final cut.

Here’s his lengthy quote in its entirety:

Well there was a guy that worked for me for years and many of you will remember the name –  he’s gone now — Cotton Fitzsimmons, who coached in the NBA for many years. I hired him out of Kansas State back in the 70′s in his first NBA job. He used the line: “You can never have too many shooters.”

So when you get down to looking at a roster, and if you truly believe in a team concept and components that you need to be successful, it’s not just a group of stars or the 12 best players. “Who complements one another?”

And people coming off the bench should be specialists. And shooters are at a premium — especially in international ball. So for that reason, I would tell you that Eric Gordon has a great opportunity. Now, he has to earn it during the course of what happens in the next few weeks. But he can shoot the ball.

He kind of reminds us of a few players — not that he’s that similar –but the name we keep coming up with is Vinnie Johnson, who played with the Pistons a few years ago. [Note:  It's been more than a few years.] Because Eric is a strong kid, big body physically, can really go to the basket when he gets a little speed up, but he can definitely fill it up. He can shoot it.

Farewell, friend

Ladies and gentlemen of the ITH blogging republic (to steal a line from Eamonn), it is with a great deal of excitement and also some sadness that I write you today.

The sad part: This week marks the end of Chris Korman’s tenure as Sports Editor at The Bloomington Herald-Times.

The exciting part: He will depart for a fabulous opportunity as the Weekend-Enterprise Editor at the Baltimore Sun. (He also tells me he’ll be editing The Toy Department. Hooray for blogs. Go check it out once he arrives.)

Hamilton Southeastern’s Gary Harris: A two-sport star

by in Recruiting | August 11th, 2010

It’s not as crazy as it seems. Yes, Gary Harris is an elite basketball recruit, particularly after what has been a successful and massively impressive summer. But there’s value, he said, in finding his escape from the hectic universe of basketball recruiting — it comes with pads and a helmet.

“(It’s) just another way for you to compete,” Harris said. “It’s fun.”

Harris, one of the top 20 players in the 2012 class, already has an offer list pages long, with Michigan State, Indiana, Illinois, Butler, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Xavier among the schools in the mix for his services.

And yet, in an age where multi-sport athletes are discouraged in favor of concentrating solely in one field, Harris will be finding his fall fun under the Friday night lights.

The 6-foot-4 Harris plays wide receiver for Hamilton Southeastern, a team that finished last season 10-2.

“It’s like you can just get away,” Harris said. “You can’t play basketball 24-7. … Football is just kind of a good release.”

Of course, Harris will be playing basketball again come wintertime. And given the summer he had, the Royals’ gym ought to sport a who’s-who lineup of college coaches. Harris’ play has made him one of Indiana’s most sought-after 2012 recruits.
