Indy Hoops Blog previews the Indiana HS season

by in Recruiting | August 31st, 2010

Joe Eberhardt, founder of IndyHoopsBlog and also a contributor here at Inside the Hall, put together a nice compilation video featuring some of the state’s top talent.

Among the players featured: IU commits Austin Etherington and Ron Patterson as well as Cody Zeller, Devin Davis, Yogi Ferrell, Gary Harris, Zak Irvin, Jeremy Hollowell, Trey Lyles and Basil Smotherman.

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

The music was too loud to hear if Austin called the bank shot at 3:07… but I’m betting he called it.

  • HoosierNshaker

All I can say is WOW ZELLER …I’m still drooling. Please commit today?

  • Justthinking

You forgot to list Kellen Dunham

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

I listed guys that are either A) committed to IU or B) are being recruited by IU.

  • Anonymous

I’m impressed with how easily Buss Patterson elevates. Very powerful for his size it seems.

Hollowell looks slow. I know this was just a few clips but in those three shots he looked like he was playing under water. That isn’t so is it?

  • BFowler

#Devin Davis is going to be a stud, seems like a high motor guy.
#Yogi looks like he can get his shot off on anyone.
#I really like the wing options from 2012-13.
#Hollowell reminds me of Watford, long and lanky, but not an explosive guy like Patterson.
#I have heard that Trey Lyles is going ot be a stud if he continues to grow as a player.
#Cody is, well, the key to the whole thing. If Jurkin was the “Big Domino” (Thanks, Sallad), then Cody needs the moniker “The Key,” or something equally as corny.

Is Indiana High School ball going to be great htis year, or what? Lots of great talent.

  • DanTheMan

Yeah, the more i see of Buss, the more i just love what he brings. Kid’s got the heart of a Lion! And i also was pleased to see how AE was looking for and feeding CZ – they’re going to be great teammates in red and white (i hope)!

  • http://twitter.com/IndyHoopsBlog Joe Eberhardt

The key for JH is going hard all the time. He can look lacadazical (sp?) at times, and it’s a combo of that plus his laid back demeanor. When he gets after it he can be flat out dominant.

  • http://twitter.com/IndyHoopsBlog Joe Eberhardt

Should be a fun year. Not sure who my 4A guess would be, but I’ll say Hamilton Southeastern for now. We’ll have to see how their bench is, but their top 4 or 5 are as good as any others in the state.

  • Anonymous

Can’t wait to see Patterson in an Indiana uniform – can’t teach his size and athleticism – he will be a tough match up for any opponent

  • Young Kelin Zeller

Despite having a ‘class basketball’ system, Indiana H.S. basketball has alot of great story lines.

    1. The somewhat of a fight for Mr. Basketball. It will be decided in Nov. If Zeller chooses IU …’ballgame’ if not, and Teague has a great year he has a shot.

    2. The rise of La Lemeire…Perea and Bo Bo should challenge for the state title.

    3. Yogi, with more talent at Park Tudor, can they get it done.

    4. The Fab Freshmen, Lyles at Tech, Bluiett at Park Tudor, Furlow at Speedway, Thompson at Brebuf,

    5. Can DSR carry North Central, Can Buss carry an inspired Broad Ripple team after the death of their teammate.

    6. Is Gary Harris ready to become a super star?

    7. Can the Etherington Brothers advance HH in the ‘class’ tourney.

    8. The BIGGEST game of the year will be after the season….Junior v Senior all stars

Seniors – Zeller, Chandler, Teague, Etherington, D.Davis, Nic Moore, Dawson vs. Juniors – Ferrell, DSR, Perea, Buss, Marrero, Harris….wow.

  • Young Kelin Zeller

Joe I am going out on a limb here and say that Pike FINALLY gets it together this year, can’t say they will win the 4a but they have a shot. They are very athletic, long, but not big and have alot of pieces to play with Turner, Teague, Hunter, Gentry.

  • Carrie

Hope to see lots of IU fans showing some love to these recruits by attending their high school games this season.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

Teague doesn’t have a shot at Mr. Basketball if the voting for last year’s all-state teams is an indication of how the voting will go. I’d say it’s between Dawson and Zeller.

  • http://twitter.com/IndyHoopsBlog Joe Eberhardt

Oh that wouldn’t surprise me one bit. If Teague uses that talent to lead a team they could be good. Pike will be fun to watch for sure.

  • http://twitter.com/IndyHoopsBlog Joe Eberhardt

It’s interesting that you say that. I was just brainstorming story line ideas to write as a preseason feature. The most intriguing one (to me) is Lyles.

  • Fwitkemper

Awesome! Great job Alex. Lets us see some action whereby we wouldnt.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

You can thank Joe. He shot all of the video and reached out to ITH and asked to share it with our readers.

  • HoosNation

Zeller’s the feller who is stellar that can get us out of the cellar!

(Did I really just type that!?!)

  • Young Kelin Zeller

Lyles is interesting to me for a few reasons….

+ How many more college coaches start swarming him
+ How does he adjust to the high school game with kids his size
+ If things don’t go well at tech, how long before he heads to (Brebuf or Park Tudor) I would say LN but their recruiting has struggled lately….ouch!

If I had to choose ONE, I would go with the La Lemiere. If they have success, will they become the new ‘prep’ school kids start flocking too? How long before do they and Bowman get bumped up a class or two….

  • Young Kelin Zeller

Can’t remember the last time the higher ranked player nationally didn’t win Mr. Basketball in this state. Dawsons only chance is Zeller choosing another school other than IU, Dawson beating Zeller in the state finals.

  • Anonymous

You’re welcome! Glad to see someone else picked up on it. Hope it continues to catch on.

When it comes to a nickname for Mr. Z, I’m going to hold off until November. All my (and others’, I know) excitement and ideas for “Moses parting the Red Sea” ended up in the trash.

  • IUHoosierKyle

Luke Zeller beat out Josh McRoberts a few years ago.

  • Garydavid711

    THANKS SO MUCH

  • BaseballBuc

Don’t forget Bowman Academy. They have Marrero back and they have recruited some guys for this year, including a 6’8” center from River Forrest. They will repeat for sure.

  • stonaroni

Zach Randolph and J. Jeffries comes to mind.

  • Young Kelin Zeller

Finally got to see this video…
+ Ron Patterson has a nasty streak I like
+ Cody Zeller will be a load for college PF or Centers to guard
    + Yogi’s feet are always moving…always.
+ It is worth repeating…Austin Etherington is a steal of a recruit for Crean/IU

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

When you consider that Teague didn’t garner a single vote for the All-State team last year, I think it’d be pretty remarkable if he were to win Mr. Basketball a year later.

  • Anonymous

Why is it he doesn’t get any votes??

  • Daburns0

What about McRoberts and Luke Zeller. McBob was a Mcdonald’s all-american

  • Anonymous

Stonaroni sounds like he’s probably right to me, I was going back to Woody Austin over Shawn Kemp. I still don’t feel right typing that, and it’s been almost 25 years.

  • Anonymous

It warms my heart to watch all those guys and feel that it’s obvious that Patterson plays harder than every one of them!

  • slojoe

How about 2005: Luke Zeller (#28 Scout) beats out Josh McRoberts (#1 Scout).

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Austin has a real nice lift on his shot. I keep saying it but he’s far more athletic than people assume. His dad was an athlete and his little brother is very athletic and could turn into a top notch recruit for IU as well on down the road.

But I have just two words that keep ringing in my ears!!! YOGI, ZELLER, YOGI, ZELLER, YOGI, ZELLER . . . I just can’t stress how important it is for IU to land those two guys! Zeller is going to be a Tyler Hansbrough type player at the college level (yes I said it!) and Yogi will be the best point guard in the NCAA for at least a couple years. That kid has moves that James Brown would envy . . . lightning quick feet!

    We need them both!!!

  • BaseballBuc

He doesn’t make his team better. It’s that simple.

  • Young Kelin Zeller

I am not sure people realize how good or important Yogi is to IU. Yogi would be the only medicine I could use if BJ Young decides to go elsewhere. Tyler had his Ty Lawson, Cody could have Yogi. I fully fully expect him to commit to IU if Cody does and I am beginning to think Cody is going to.

  • hoosierfan2

Sort of off topic, but as the new Rivals 150 for 2012 came out I couldn’t help but notice that DSR was 53 spots ahead of Ron Patterson (25 to 78 respectively). Somehow that just doesn’t seem right to me. No disrespect to DSR, but I think I’d rather have Ron Patterson (and not just because IU does). Ron’s got better athleticism and his stats shows that he impacts the game in all facets. With Ron’s athletic edge I think that he has the better upside (I know, NBA word) of the two prospects. I’m still excited for that pick up, and now there’s an Indiana kid in the 2011 and 2012 classes, which a lot of people have been clamoring for (including Bob Kravitz from the Indy Star who wrote an poorly written and researched article pertaining to that, leading me to lose all respect for him and a lot for the Indy Star).

However, i did see Yogi at 17 and HP at 10 which got me pretty excited. As for HP, I feel like he doesn’t make a move to Indiana just to move to Waco two years later. At this point I’d be pretty put out if he doesn’t commit to the Hoosiers.

You can rest assured that just about anything that carries with the stature that Mr. Basketball in IN carries there is going to be some politics involved in it some way or another. And then there is the thing about his attitude that he has more than willingly showed the last couple of years. Don’t get me wrong though when everything is factored in.I think the voters pretty much got it right when it comes to Teague. Don’t think you’ll see Mr. Teague wearing the number one on his jersey when the IN KY all star games are played.

  • Diesel

Hoosierfan – I agree, I’m just not as big on DSR as I am on some of the other guys and I think I’d take Patterson as well. But I’m not sure you can compare their stats. The teams that North Central plays are much different than that of the IPSAC, not that some great talent hasn’t come out of IPS, and also DSR was often playing in a bigger position, I think he guarded the 5 in the state championship game. It would probably be a little more accurate to compare their stats this season now that Terone is gone. It also worries me a little bit that DSR is on his second knee surgery already.

  • Diesel

I’ve seen Bluiett play a couple of times as an 8th grader. He was so far above the talent level, you couldn’t even evaluate him.

  • millzy32

Yes but look at where they are now. Poor McRoberts has to play for the Pacers while Luke gets to do whatever it is he does whenever he wants and watch his bro’s play HS and College BBall.

Maybe a little politics in the Mr. BBall voting huh?

Just got the tweet about Zeller setting up his visits. Looks like he will be at Butler on Oct. 9-11, Carolina 15-17, and IU 29-31. Bad news is that means he won’t be at Hoosier Hysteria. Good news we get the last visit to make the biggest impression.

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

The dates for CZ’s official visits have been announced: Butler, then UNC, then IU. I like the fact that we’re last, so it’ll be fresh in his mind, BUT he’s visiting UNC for their midnight madness event… he’s attending an IU football game (vs. Northwestern), but that atmosphere won’t compare to what he could’ve gotten during IU’s Hoosier Hysteria.

I’m still hopeful that we’ll land CZ, but I’m bummed he’s not attending our midnight madness.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Crap! I don’t like that one bit. The whole MM thing worries me considerably.

  • Anonymous

That’s all pretty crazy – I wasn’t aware of Teague carrying issues like that – that’s unfortunate when you look at the talent he has and the fact that in the end he is still representing Indiana as his home state.

  • Anonymous

As much as Cody’s commitment might attract Yogi, don’t you think it could work the other way around too? What is Yogi’s status? Does he have any timelines for visits/commitments? It would be huge if IU could get a commitment from him first. And my excitement level would be at an all time high.

  • Anonymous

I know this is pretty minor, but hasn’t Cody already in a way “visited” NC before? I would think that he has visited his brother out there at some point? – attended a basketball game there before? And if so should be familiar with the city and campus and some other amenities and even game atmospheres? What all goes on during the official visits? The midnight madness would definitely add some hype though, but if he has gone to a game then he should be familiar with some of it beforehand.

  • mjeze106

Cody is not going to UNC.

  • hoosierinthailand

While LaLumiere will certainly be interesting to watch, they are not an IHSAA school, and play very few member schools.
