Ron Patterson joins Indiana’s 2012 recruiting class

by in Recruiting | August 15th, 2010

Ron Patterson could have left the state of Indiana for college. But ultimately, he decided it would be best to stay home.

During his second visit this week to Bloomington, the Broad Ripple guard gave a verbal commitment to Tom Crean on Sunday afternoon.

“It was close to home,” Patterson told Inside the Hall of his choice to play for the Hoosiers. “I wanted to stay. After this visit, I knew I wanted to come.”

Patterson summed up Crean’s reaction to the news, which was delivered in person, with four simple words.

“He started going crazy,” he laughed.

The 6-3 guard, ranked No. 57 nationally by Scout.com, had offers from several schools including Tennessee, Xavier and Virginia Tech. But ultimately, Indiana, the first school to offer Patterson during his freshman season, won out.

He’s the second member of IU’s 2012 class, joining 7-footer Peter Jurkin, who committed on Monday at adidas Nations in Chicago.

With his decision out of the way, Patterson said he’d like to see one of his former AAU teammates join him in Bloomington.

“I’d like to see Jeremy Hollowell come play with me,” he said.

Here’s Inside the Hall’s scouting report on Patterson from the Kentucky Hoopfest:

It’s not difficult to become a fan of Patterson once you observe all of the intangibles he brings to the table. While others are focused on scoring as much as possible or attempting to throw down ridiculous dunks, Patterson sticks to the basics: hard-nosed defense, finding the open man, finishing in traffic and crashing the boards. His shot from the perimeter is also continuing to improve. He’s not the most highly sought after recruit Indiana is pursuing for the 2012 class, but he’s probably the best fit in terms of filling a need. And if he can develop the handle to run the point, that’ll make him even more valuable at the next level.

My only problem with your scenario is one of those guys (esp. Perea or Hollowell) could leave early and go pro, thus severely hurting our chances of a championship. CZ is a four year guy.

  • http://twitter.com/amr120402 Anthony Ritter

I realize everyone wants zeller but if we get young for 2011 and then land perea buss jurkin hollowell and one of yogi and DSR i’d be beyond happy with that.

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

I love that thought … we are going to be insanely athletic if we get Perea, BJY, Hollowell, etc.

  • GFDave

Guys: Who has seen Hollowell play and what is your impression?

  • http://weeklycritiquely.blogspot.com/ IUfanPurduePhD

With the jumping ability of Oladipo, Sheehey, Patterson, and [possibly] Perea, to go along with the sheer height of Jurkin, I don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t get 2-3 oops per game; in fact, no game should go by without an oop.

  • BaseballBuc

Ok, I hear you, but right now Patterson isn’t close to where Creek was. You are judging strictly on potential. I agree with you, potentially he could be just as good as EJ but he’s not there yet. He isn’t a guy thats going to come in freshman year and hang 31pts on UK. Ron is a great player but cmon’ Zeller is THE guy.

  • GFDave

I agree with the need to balance the classes. Even if we sign Zeller and Etherington, I would still like to see 1 more player added. Maybe an energy/competitor type player like Kaminski would have been. Of course that depends on how the 2012 group rounds out.

  • Azur Allen

sweet. he is also underrated athletically. he’ll surprise everyone with his game and athleticism just like elston did

  • Azur Allen

you make a VERY valid point about early entry. but i don’t necessarily buy the CZ being a 4 year guy. anyone who plays well enough is leaving early….

  • IULineman

Careful big fella, still remembering Evans carrying us with a bad wing

  • Young Kelin Zeller

Anthony I am going to have to agree with you on this one…I would not be upset with Etherington and Young, followed by Perea, Buss, Yogi, Jurkin, and Harris or Hollowell. I really really like BJ Young with this team and what he could bring. Having said that Cody, young, and Zeller…followed by Buss, Yogi, Jurkin, and (Harris, Hollowell, or Perea) would be another tradeoff……

I guess I want it all

  • LTTelamon

Ugh. Don’t know why you would say that. Wilmont was an excellent player, and one opposing teams had to game plan for. Completely disagree with you… if anything, Patterson has to earn the Wilmont comparison, not vice versa.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I’ve only seen several highlights and films of games but he looks good. He’s got a real nice high shot and seems to play very instinctively. I mean that he shoots gaps, makes hard cuts to the basket, and grabs rebounds because he seems to see the floor well and read the game well. He’s also pretty athletic. I wouldn’t put him on a Patterson or Perea level because he’s not a great leaper but a good one and gets up pretty quick.

  • http://twitter.com/amr120402 Anthony Ritter

Forgot about harris he would for sure be on that list too. This is off topic but does anyone know how season basketball tickets for alumni at IU work and how much they cost?

  • Diesel

“No Rod, no Rod, don’t shoot it from there Rod…..yes Rod!” Hopefully that’s not what I remember about Buss after 4 years as a Hoosier.

Yeah Rod got hot from time to time and played hard, but rarely played smart and it was until his senior year that he was much of a contributer. I’m going to go with Chitown on this one.

  • Anonymous

Or, in honor of former Mr. Basketball Chuck Franz, “Take the Last Train to Clarksville”. OK, maybe not.

  • Anonymous

I’m with you, I loved Wilmont. No, he wasn’t the greatest player ever, but he played hard, he had fun, and he was a hellacious athlete.

  • Diesel

Yeah, it eases the sting, but it’s like putting the hydrocortisone cream on the bee sting. You still say a few curse words before the pain goes away.

I love the excitement and can’t wait for another verbal (so long as it’s not David Williams), but losing out on Zeller would mean that our 2011 team is not as good as it could be. I think we all agree that Zeller could come in and signifantly help this team, might even be a starter. And 2011 needs to the be the year on the floor where we take that step into the tourney. The recruiting hype is great, but in the end it’s the W’s and the L’s that matter.

  • Anonymous

I was about to type this myself when I saw your post.

I’m seeing Sheehey, Oladipo, Patterson, Jurkin, and maybe Perea along with the other guys and envisioning a potential 40 Minutes of Hell 2.0 (minus the Cowboy boots and gun-toting sons.)

  • Anonymous

You don’t have to be a 3 on both ends, though. Let Cody roam the perimeter on offense and have Hanner posting and pounding the boards. On the other end let Hanner take the smaller, quicker guy and leave Cody down low.

  • Anonymous

Yep. It’s ok to have cross-racial comparisons too. I’m hoping AE resembles Jay Edwards.

  • Troy

Wow, I didn’t know he was that great of a shooter. If we have the athletes that can get up and down the court and into the lane at will then shooter like AE will put up some nice numbers running to the wings. 2011-2016 should see a lot of points scored in multiple ways by IU. I am starting to feel that swagger again as an IU fan.

  • iudawg

So glad we are no longer talking about Greg Echenique, Cody Larson, and Moses Abraham. Bring on more Indiana kids for ’11 (BJ being the exception) and ’12.

  • Anonymous

To me it has always been imperative for IU to convince the best players from southern Indiana to matriculate in Bloomington. Zeller would instantly influence a multitude of young boys south of highway 40 and north of the Ohio River to become die-hard Crimson fans again.

  • Gustin

Getting BJY would definitely “ease” the pain; and, you know what I am talking about. Young is that good.

  • Gustin

Plus, it gives all of us something to be anxious about…VBG!

  • Anonymous

If we get the players we are all thinking that we are and he doesn’t press full court and do some half court trapping and so forth, at least part of the time, then this IU fan thinks he is missing an killer chance to instill some real fear in future oppenents plus it gives the opposing team in the next game on the schedule just one more thing to have to prepare for. That was always one of the problems that I had with BK, too predictable and when it got late in the game and we needed the ball and we tried to press they just could not normally excel at it since they never praciticed it or done it in an actual game other than at the end when we needed it to work more than at any other part of the game.

  • LTTelamon

Are you confusing him with Robert “Any Shot Is A Good Shot” Vaden?

  • Anonymous

See nail head, see hammer hit nail on head. Shape it, frame it, discuss it, scream it any way you want cause when it’s all said and done getting back to the top and STAYING there boil down to one thing and that is like you said the W’s and the L’s. Now don’t get me wrong it does matter how you get to the W’s but thankfully I don’t think we have to worry about that any more.

  • Anonymous

Except for that you posted his quote.

  • millzy32

We have to face the facts about some of these kids that have given their hearts and souls the past couple of years to IU. They got the opportunity to play for IU only because IU was down and out. They would most likely be at Ball State or Miami of OH or somewhere other than IU. I hate to have to get rid of any of them either but Mr. Crean is making millions to put a winner on the court as soon as he possibly can so he must do whatever is necessary within the rules ofcourse.

  • Anonymous

One of CZ’s best attributes is running the floor. He said it himself.

  • Anonymous

And to get someone like Patterson from Indianapolis which has just been a dead spot for IU over the years. That place is a haven for hoopers and we have to continue to grab these kids from that area.

  • millzy32

Those two are in the Donut Dunking Contest out in the main concourse. All the ITH readers will be allowed to participate in this one too.

  • Anonymous

RP is a completely different player than Creek or Jones. It’s just a dumb comparison. Sometimes I just don’t know about that guy.

  • Anonymous

I totally understand what you mean. I want to see wins. I also think these kids will have a place in Hoosier history. Tom Pritchard may never be an all Big Ten talent, but he was THE MAN for the Hoosiers his Freshman year. I think all Hoosier fans will remember the names of the guys on the last two Hoosier teams until they die. Matt Roth, Tom Pritchard, Tijan Jobe, VJIII. These guys will hopefully get the chance to get a degree from IU and get ahead in life. Don’t get me wrong, I want to see wins and Big Ten championships and Final Four appearances ASAP. And I do have a side that totally agrees with you. I am an teacher, though, and would like to see these kids be able to finish with a degree, because they probably won’t get rewarded in any other way.

  • millzy32

I hope you guys are even half right. If he’s anything resembling Gordon we are in for a treat. His ranking doesn’t really suggest it but rankings are so subjective.

Although I think Gordon was right up there with OJ Mayo as the number one and two for that class.

  • millzy32

And, if Young is as Elite as you think he is then he may not be there the next year and what do you know the scholarship problem solves itself again. Too many variables going on to ever worry about scholarships. There will always be scholarships available for great players.

I want the problem to become that we don’t have enough basketballs for all the talent that we have on the roster. That’s the problem I like to hear about.

  • millzy32

I hate to say this believe me I really do but does Young really fit with what Tom Crean is trying to do image wise? Poor grades? Possibly a one and done or two and done? He looked great on the video I saw on the court but the whole grade situation and listening to his interview made me think this guy might not be a good fit for the type of program Crean is trying to build.

I hope I’m wrong and he hits the books and it isn’t a question but look at Calipari and all the kids he recruits who always have problems with grades.

It isn’t like the grades are easier to come by once you get to college either. If he’s having problems in HS what happens in college?

  • millzy32

Creek was ranked somewhere in the 60′s wasn’t he, I think like 67???? Watford was ranked higher around 41 so Patterson is actually already ranked higher than Creek was coming out of High School.

  • BaseballBuc

Sometimes I think he is bitter from the way things ended and he takes it out by giving IU as little credit as possible.

  • millzy32

When I went to IU back in 93-97 I heard that if you were an alumnus wanting season tickets you had better make a substantial donation to the school and then that gave you a better chance at getting tickets. I think you’d probably be better off getting scalped tickets for the games you want to go to if money is a concern. They’ll be cheaper in the long run.

  • BaseballBuc

He is right now. Hopefully he can sustain it and stay in the rankings for 2 years. We saw what happened when JD fell all the way down and AE fell out the rankings.

  • Anonymous

Good point. The guy looks bitter 24/7 if you think about it. I haven’t seen
    him smile since the 80′s.

  • Anonymous

    Thanks Ace.

  • Anonymous

He is our #1 target in the class of 2012. Like you I want him at Indiana.

  • Anonymous

I agree that Zeller is the guy for the class of 2011. But I was stating the case for Patterson to be a Quinn Buckner type of leader at IU for 3-4 years starting in 2012-13. He has the leadership skills to bring other great players together into a championship team. He will score when we need it, but he will do everything each and every game.

  • Anonymous

Creek was #59 in Rivals and #52 in Scout; Watford was #41 in Rivals and #57 in Scout as a final ranking..

  • Anonymous

From the reports that I read, J Davis just did not perform very well this summer. From those same reports Austin Etherington was great this summer, one of the very best wing shooters around and with an improved overall game. He is a solid #80-100 no matter what the rankers say. Just as Will and Vic’s play last year during the HS season last year did not justify dropping them from the 130′s to the 140′s. I smell a skunk slighting Coach Crean and IU. Ron Patterson is a top 50 player and he is a Hoosier now! Who cares what the ranking services say from here on in?

I am painting a target on your back and sending Capo all of these emails. That dude is “BIG”, at least compared to me!
