Report: Ron Patterson commits to Indiana

by in Recruiting | August 15th, 2010

Our friend Jody Demling of The Louisville-Courier Journal is reporting that Broad Ripple guard Ron Patterson has given a verbal commitment to Indiana.

Patterson, a 6-3 guard from the 2012 class, had been considered an Indiana lean and a recent unofficial visit apparently helped the Hoosiers pick up their second commitment in less than a week.

We’ll have more on this developing story very soon.

  • CutterInChicago

    Like this news. A lot.

  • Knasmiley

    Great news for sure………

This is going to be exciting to see how this all shakes out, CTC is finally going to get his DUE………

  • josh

Great news! Now a few more pieces and we are there!!! Guess what Purdue, WE’RE BACKKKKK!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

Sorry about this. I consider myself a gentlemen……

    F….Yes.

    Yes yes yes yes yes!!!!!

I’m cracking open a Corona in your honor RP. If this isn’t a sign CTC is getting it together then such a thing does not exist.

    YES!

Usually there isn’t much going on during the weekends on here but I stopped by and was surprised to see a commit! Awesome news and it should just keep getting better.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

Yeah Baby!!! This was another one of the must gets for that 2012 class and things are starting to look better all the time.

The athleticism on future IU teams is starting to get better and better. Just think a couple of years ago we were led by a freshman VJ3 and guys like Taber and Pritchard. In a couple years we’ll be led by the likes of Oladipo/Creek/Watford/Patterson/Jurkin and hopedully more! That’s a pretty athletic lineup and a Big 10 competitor waiting to happen. Man this has been a much better week to be an IU fan.

Off the subject, but I passed Derek Elston in the mall the other day at Castleton and that dude is freaking huge! I watched him play a few times in high school and he was a pretty big high school player but he was tall and thin. I bet he goes every bit of 245 now according to what I saw and he was strong! Can’t wait to see what DE can do on the court this year with his added strength and weight!

what is the scholarship situation for the 2011 and 2012 class now?

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

P.S. – I have a feeling this thread is going to blow up tonight! Hopefully Perea and Yogi are soon to follow!!!

  • http://twitter.com/ChronicHoosier Chronic Hoosier

Don’t know whether this has more to do with the Korman curse being lifted or the luck of the ginger
preempting his arrival, but it’s gotta be viewed as a sign that the basketball gods are happy with everyone’s new plans. Praise be to Tijan.

  • Bryan

Think there’s two more slots for 2012. Really, there’s no open slots for 2011, and it’s been that way for a while. To add to 2011 you have to lose players from the current roster.

  • http://twitter.com/hoosierfan00 jonah persinger

what is the scholarship situation for the 2011 and 2012 classes

  • http://twitter.com/hoosierfan00 jonah persinger

wat about zeller and bj young

  • Anonymous

How many schollies does that leave? That ought to put some pressure on some of these others in the 2012 class. Next up….HP!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

No there’s still one and an oversign according to the numbers for 2011. I think they’re saving the one for Zeller’s decision and then Young would be the oversign and then you could see one more transfer before that time.

  • IUfaninMN

Wait I’m seeing one open scholarship for 2011. Are you assuming Zeller is going to commit or are you saying that IU doesn’t have a scholarship for him?

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

If I’m reading all of the stuff from Alex and the guys on here correctly then we still have one left for 2011 plus one oversign and then the same for 2012. If that’s the case then could we get some help on that to make sure Alex. Also, that means there would have to be a transfer each of those years or a couple after this season for these numbers to add up.

  • http://twitter.com/hoosierfan00 jonah persinger

thanks i just hope we get cody zeller he would b the recruit to restore indiana to our riteful place

  • Scott

They better hurry and decide soon (tonight works for me). The way things are moving now these kids need to commit or someone else will beat them to the punch! The Hoosiers are going to be back very soon!!!

  • UncleKerfuffle

As far as scholarships are concerned, you have to believe that CTC has a plan to make it all work out.

Right now I am just going to bask in the moment and enjoy the recruiting news between now and Hoosier Hysteria.

  • Abpreston

Excellent way to end a bad weekend…..finally getting good news on the recruiting front for the Indiana basketball future.

  • http://twitter.com/amr120402 Anthony Ritter

Im not concerned with schollys to be honest. If a good player wants to come CTC will make room.

  • Bryan

I read it slightly different. I thought slot 13 was the oversign slot. Pretty sure college bb has 12 man rosters.

  • kristheboss

I’ve been saying this for a while, but Patterson is so important for IU rebuilding just because he is an athlete unlike any we have while still having great fundamentals. Also IPS kids flourish once they get to college ball (Vaughn, Hill, Carney) I’m very excited with this pick up.
    We Got the BUSS

  • Bleeding Crimson

    Anthony,
2011 has one schollie left and now 2012 has two schollie’s left. The oversign I think is just for one but only for one of those years, not both? Alex would be best to answer.
    BC

  • silkyslim222

Nothing like playing close to home and in one of the best college bball schools in the nation. Good to see CTC pulling in some of the home state talent! Good luck RP you picked a fun place to play and a program on the big upswing!

  • Bryan

Of course, looking further, it seems wikipedia (and everyone else) indicate 13. Brain fart on my part.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I thought so too and asked that same question not to long ago and got the answer I gave above (13 +1) from several of these guys and it wasn’t corrected by any of the guys connected to the site so I’m going to assume that’s the case. If you look at it by numbers then the scholarship players returning in 2012 would be:

    Seniors: Creek/Watford/Elston/Capo/Hulls
    Juniors: Sheehey/Oladipo
Sophomores: Etherington/2 more (cross fingers on Young/Zeller)
    Freshman: Jurkin/Patterson/2 more (hopefully Yogi/Perea)

I could swallow a transfer or two to make that happen, I’m just not prepared to say who at this point but I’m pretty sure CTC will work that out.

  • N71

Wow! Ron Patterson is one hell of a player but also a great leader. What a pick up for us and what a great situation for him, he’ll be a legend and loved throughout the state for the rest of his life. I think he’ll have a similar career to Calbert although they’re different players. What Hoosier doesn’t love Calbert, the same will be said for Ron. Thank you Coach for putting things back together because this is the way it should be for these guys. Yogi is another that could become another Hoosier legend, and then the next great Indiana kid, and the next, and on and on. This is Indiana.

  • Anonymous

Guys I think regardless of the scholarship situation we are grabbing anyone we can that greatly upgrades the talent level at IU. This may be the last year it appears we are gently shoving a kid toward the door. But in CTC’s world it’s a necessesity until he has a roster full of his own recruits.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I’m going to be the first to officially say it so hopefully I don’t have to eat crow later . . . Coach Tom Crean said not too long ago that he may have overestimated the whole “It’s Indiana” thing in the mind of recruits and that IU may have lost a whole generation of fans and potential recruits with the years of mismanagement by MD and Denim Shirt but I think he may have just put the “It’s Indiana” back in the mix when recruiting.

I know I’m raising my kids as IU fans and I also know IU is still THE basketball school in this state and having guys like Patterson and Jurking commit so early is a great sign that the name of the program and the history still packs a punch when added to a solid coach and solid philosophy. At this point I can’t see guys like Yogi and Zeller not committing and I’m starting to think IU may have a decent shot at some guys like Hollowell and Harris that I wouldn’t have considered IU as a favorite before.

This long post leads up to this: I believe IU is officially back with the announcements in the past week and we should have something great to look forward to in the future!!!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

You still have the oversign and IU is not going to sign too many guys and leave off Zeller! Trust all of us that he’s the #1 target and that won’t happen.

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I agree! I thought it was a specific group of guys looking at IU and that was it. Now it’s beginning to look like there may be a competition for those last spots. Including the oversign there’s four total spots left and think about this – the players left with IU/Player mutual interest are as follows:

    2011 – Zeller/Young/Davis
    2012 – Yogi/Perea/Harris/Hollowell/Smith-Rivera

That looks to me like twice the number of guys as there is spots left so CTC may have actually worked himself into a situation where he gets to pick the best of the players left on the list if they all pick up interest in IU because of these recent commits.

Man, what a nice situation and feeling compared to a few months ago when we were hanging on the word of one slightly above average recruit!!!

  • Nwfhoosier

look for IU to possibly have a 5man class. i know it looks weird on paper, but a few well informed guys said this could easily happen.

  • kristheboss

ummmm Calberts a stretch, he is still the big ten all time leading scorer… He’ll be good maybe great but only one Calbert

  • kristheboss

Correction, I really see the Buss being great… but idk I feel Chaney like Knight, Isiah, and the 76 team are almost too important in IU history to assume someone else can ever do what they did.

  • harmonjw

There sure is a lot of home grown talent on that list!

  • Marsh21

    Waaaaahhhhhooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

I’ve been wishing for this kid!! Great get Crean. We are rolling for the 12 class. This is going to be easily a top ten recruiting class when its all done.

    Come on Perea!!!!!!!!!!!

  • IU_Fan_99

so Peegs mentioned the possibility of a 5 man class for 2012 on twitter? any idea who the other three kids might be? how realistic is this? Perea & Yogi? + ??

  • BTownSquare

Terrific news! Patterson can flat-out play and should be an outstanding addition to Hoosiers basketball!

  • ArtistFormerlyKnownAs_Aceman07

I think they’re looking at Perea/Yogi/Hollowell as solid possibilities.

  • Anonymous

I read this on Peegs, too. We have Patterson and Jurkin, obviously. Perea, Hollowell and Ferrell to round out that five man class?

  • Anonymous

I think Pereea and Hollowell are closer to committing to IU than is Ferrell.

  • Anonymous

    Agreed.

  • hoosier fan 2012

I feel like these rumors of a 5 man class are very realistic. There are still so many people left in the class of 2012 that iu is pursuing and most importantly they live in indiana. I think yogi ferrel is a great additioin but i think he is waiting to see what zeller does because he is good friends with zeller and etherington. while DSR is good friends with jurkin and perea. in the case that the 5 man class occurs that peegs is talking about i could see it shaking out with hollowell, perea, and then either DSR or Yogi. Either of which can run the point. All in all its a great time to be a hoosier fan and Coach Crean is perfect for the job.

You get 13 scholarships. IU now has 12 given to players for the 2010-11 season. Each scholarship is for one season only, but they are usually renewed each year that the student athlete has left for eligibility. JR will use up his eligibility at the end of this season. Thus IU has 2 scholarships free for the class of 2011. One is for Etherington the other is for Zeller. The Big 10 allows one “oversign” scholarship to be offered for 2011, this would be BJ Young. But then you must find a scholarship to give to Young before the start of school in 2011. For 2012 IU will have 4 scholarships available: Michel, Jones, Pritchard and Roth. Again they could offer the oversign for a 5th scholarship. However, if IU does the oversign for a 3rd scholarship in 2011 AND they free this scholarship up by NOT giving a scholarship to Michel, Jones, Pritchard or Roth for 2011 then they cut into the scholarships available for 2012. IU can do 2 recruits for 2011 and 4 recruits for 2012 without any problem. We could have 3 in 2011 or 5 in 2012, but someone must lose a scholarship, like Bawa this year or Gordon in 2008. IU could have 3 in 2011 AND 5 in 2012, but then two players would have to lose a scholarship. At the beginning of school only 13 scholarships are allowed. Every November you can sign a number of recruits equal to your number of players with no more eligibility left after that season plus the one oversign. It is hard to say in words but not hard to figure out.

  • Anonymous

Yes I think that you are exactly right on 2012 with Jurkin, Patterson, Hollowell, Yogi and Perea. If all 5 commit soon then you forget Young for 2011 if Zeller says yes to IU. But Yogi needs to commit now so that Young does not grab the scholarship. If you have 3 in 2011 it is very hard to get 5 in 2012. Not impossible, just messy.

Should that be the nickname of the Cook Center? “The House that Tijan Built”

  • Anonymous

Don’t know if he’s a Cheaney-like scorer, but I’d bet shickled titless if he turned out to be Greg Graham.

  • Anonymous

    Exactly, a great leader!
