Complete ACC-Big Ten Challenge schedule released

by in Schedule | May 12th, 2010

Cornell v Wisconsin

Per IU Media Relations:

Indiana will travel to Boston College to face the Eagles in the 12th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge Presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3.com. This will be the fourth meeting between the two teams, and first since the 1996 NCAA Tournament.  BC won that game, 64-51, and in the 1994 NCAA Tournament, 77-68.  IU won the first meeting in 1983 in Indianapolis, 72-66.

“Boston College has one of the most experienced teams and they are battle tested and our players will have the opportunity very early in the season to compete against a nationally prominent program away from home, much like the Pitt game last year,” said IU Head Coach Tom Crean. “I have a lot of respect for their new coach Steve Donahue, who brought his Cornell team to Assembly Hall two years ago.  It will be an exciting matchup for the players and fans.”

IU will return all five starters from last season and 12 lettermen, while BC could return 11 seniors or juniors to their roster.

The Big Ten is the defending Challenge champion, defeating the ACC by a 6- 5 margin a year ago. Road teams won six of the 11 games in 2009, and seven of the contests were decided by seven points or less, including four games won by four points or fewer.

+ After Sports Radio 810 WHB reported early Monday that the Big Ten had offered four schools the opportunity to join the conference, a league spokesperson denied the report to the Chicago Tribune.

Citing multiple sources close to the negotiations, here’s the meat and potatoes of the Sports Radio 810 WHB report:

The Big Ten Conference has extended initial offers to join the league to four universities including Missouri and Nebraska from the Big 12. While nothing can be approved until the Big Ten presidents and chancellors meet the first week of June in Chicago, the league has informed the two Big 12 schools, Notre Dame and Rutgers that it would like to have them join. It is not yet clear whether the Big Ten will expand to 14 or 16 teams but sources indicated Missouri and Nebraska are invited in either scenario.

Report: IU administration won’t clear Emmanuel Negedu

by in Recruiting | May 7th, 2010

Tennessee v KansasMike Griffith of The Knoxville News Sentinel is reporting that while doctors at IU cleared him to play, school administrators will not clear Emmanuel Negedu to play for the Hoosiers:

Former Tennessee basketball player Emmanuel Negedu said Indiana University doctors cleared him to return to play athletically, but the school’s administration declined.

Negedu said he was disappointed with the news, but was not prepared to discuss his situation any further on Thursday.

The report also mentioned that New Mexico, UTEP, Nebraska, UNLV, Arizona and Memphis are showing interest in Negedu and that despite the news from IU, the 6-7 forward still hopes to play next season.

While Negedu would have provided a boost to the IU front court, the potential risk of adding a player who suffered a cardiac arrest less than a year ago was too much to overlook.

As a freshman at Tennessee, Negedu averaged 7.2 minutes, 1.9 rebounds and 1.7 points in 33 games.
