Video: Cody Zeller at Spiece Run-N-Slam

by in Video | May 5th, 2010

Thanks to Dylan Burkhardt over at UMHoops.com for passing along the following video of 2011 big man Cody Zeller from this past weekend’s Spiece Run-N-Slam in Ft. Wayne. The video is from four games of bracket play at Spiece including the semis and finals and is a compilation of just about every play that Zeller was involved in and not a highlight reel.

UMHoops.com also posted video of Yogi Ferrell and Marshall Plumlee if you’d like to head over and check those out.

tyler could be a really good player – he has size, nice touch, decent handle, goes to left, but again looks more like a 3 than a 5. Yogi is quick – and also has good upside. Not players to turn it around immediately but have sig potential in 2-3 yrs. Still like Dawson the best and would rate J Davies and the cincy kid higher. However I am an ex baseball player and would defer to CTC and staff and keep my day job.

  • Chris

He would definately help us inside although he is not the savior to our problems. Solid player but not a top 50 talent. I hope we land him though because he would be a solid player him Junior and Senior year

  • GFDave

Now that is a blast from the past.

  • Mike K

And that is exactly why we need someone stronger and better than Zeller.

  • iubase

Zeller could be an impact player in 2-3 yrs. I still like J Davis and A Thomas from cincy better. I will leave that to CTC since his career is based on developing these players. Any word on Negedu?

  • BFowler

I like your thinking. I have been saying for some time that this team lacks a certain type of explosive athleticism. There is no one to intimidate drivers of the lane. There are no finishers. When the freshman point guard at Iowa was driving and laying in at will, I knew we lacked that prescence (as if the the other 30 games were not evidence enough). There is no one you see slamming on the other team. Highlight reel stuff.

  • JerryCT

Lets compare to Pritchard and adjusted for CTC's offense and defense:

    1. Zeller is not setting an effective ball screen anytime soon , and maybe never as well as TP
    2. TP would stick Zeller at the 3 pt line w back to basket unable to move
    3. TP would block out Zeller to the FT line unable to rebound
    4. Zeller is not sealing off on the drives anytime soon

Other than competing w Watford for most shots blocked ( your own shot of course ) I see him as a mobile project who could be a nice Steve Nowak someday, maybe.

  • JerryCT

It appears he can run the floor, pass , nice pull up jumper and hit free throws and of course …………….. he is not even close to the level he needs to be at to play Div 1 basketball at a high level. Did not look like a post player or an eraser. BUT,that is what our development center is for .

just curious …. do we have any video of Noreen ???? I am suspecting he does the same things as Zeller only better

  • GFDave

I don't think I saw anything new here. Zeller is a versatile long and tall kid who isn't really a post player. Big upside if he continues to develop and get stronger.

The Yogi video was interesting. His assortment of hesitation, change of pace and crossover moves was tremendous and he got into the lane at will. That's where the problems started, however, as he had troubles against the bigger kids. He needs to develop both mid and long range jumpers to augment his dribble drive game. Difficult to press as he has a very good handle and extreme quickness.

  • BFowler

I have no issues with heavily recruiting this kid. Granted it is a “highlight” video, but I saw a kid with a good assortment of post moves, aggressive on the boards (at least on the hightlights), and a good free throw stroke. The only thing that bothered me was he got his shot stuffed a couple of times in the last couple of sequences. Don't know who he was playing against, but that shouldn't happen in the circumstances in did….

  • fldwtch87

Does anyone have any verification of how tall Zeller really is? Unless everyone playing around him are all taller than 6'5, I don't see him being 6'11.

  • Hoagland

Does anyone else feel like the music for this Zeller recruiting video is off? It works for guards, or high fliers, but Zellers cool calculate below the rim game calls for something different. Something youd hear on the radio in Washington. That would really get everyone in the right mindset to evaluate the kid because it would give us a feel for his background as well.

But seriously, I think we need to hit Zeller hard and make a big push for him, but it is on the fanbase if we expect him to come in and be a traditional 5 in the B10 who weighs 240+ and is a banger. He would still be a great 4, could work on his strength and post moves, and he knows basketball. Just because hes not the 5 we need, doesn't mean we shouldnt go after him and then pick up a 5 somewhere else. Thats where the problem is, I don't know where this 5 would come from, or why they would pick IU because Creans system does not highlight the 5 at all. Also, I think we need to look at a kid like the big guy at Illinois. He is tall and skinny, looks like the goofiest basketball player ever, yet he continually kills us. As long as he gets it done, I don't care how pretty it is, and Zeller so far has gotten it done.

  • JerryCT

Yogi reminds me of Scoonie Penn

  • HoosNation

Zeller could be stellar! We need this guy. Crean's legacy would begin as soon as he landed Zeller and Yogi. Those 2 guys are players. Real players. They are being coached by high school staff. Imagine what a complete major college program could do with them. Not to mention Cook Hall. JDavis is a must, and we need him because I think MC might be declaring after the monster year he puts up next year-allowing room for Yogi to run point and JD, Hulls 3 guard lineup. Possibilites are endless the next 2 years. We will be back boys, we will be back……….!!

I would love to see us pick up Jackie Moon as player/coach for 2010! –”Fly to the stars with Jackie Moon”

  • IUfanPurduePhD

Definitely love the quick spin moves (esp. @ the 59-second mark) and his passing ability, but you're right, I don't think he'd be a defensive force (even if he put on 30 pounds). I'd also love to see some sort of Noreen vids; YouTube had jack.

  • tmeaster

I saw him play against Travis Carrol (supposedly 6'9 or 10) and Zeller was at least an inch taller.

He didn't have a stellar performance, but he was a much better player than Carrol and it showed.

  • JerryCT

Wow ! you saw alot in that video I did not see and projected it into a Crean legacy. Not saying you are wrong but ……….Wow.

If Mo goes , like you say , then I would much much rather have Thomas than Zeller. I like ferrell under any circumstances since we have no guard who can defend.

  • IUfanPurduePhD

Not in love with Yogi's outside shot, but man, that kid has break-neck speed (and he's got 2 more years to work on that outside shot). That kind of speed would be invaluable in the fast break or in the waning seconds of a halfcourt set. (and a recent article had him listed at 5'11″, which means that his height isn't too much of a detriment; maybe Yogi could have Noreen's doctors check to see if his growth plates were still open!)

Any idea which way Yogi is leaning? Seriously, how much fun would it be to hear the student section chanting “YO-GI, YO-GI, YO-GI” … that alone would the the price of admission.

  • marchus

no doubt zeller would be a great pick up for us, however i am such a sucker for the freak athlete. With that being said my number 1 guy in 2011 and 2012 is Hanner Perea…… what a tremendous athlete

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dylan-Matthews/1457776139 Dylan Matthews

ha, yeah. That song was way off considering a third of his highlights consisted of free throw shooting.

  • http://twitter.com/amr120402 Anthony Ritter

I might be in the minority but I'd rather have Anthony Davis than Zeller but would be glad if we can land either.

  • Hardwood83

I would agree he sure doesn't seem that tall- I would have guessed 6'8″ at most, but it is hard to tell. Looks like he has nice touch and is a decent athlete.

  • marcusgresham

I agree with tmeaster—I've never seen him play in person, but he played in the regional against a kid I know from Corydon who is a legitimate 6'2″/6'3″. I saw a picture of the two of them standing side-by-side, and Zeller was about 8 inches taller.

  • Kelin Blab

I like AD also, not sure more than zeller…..AD is rail thin but very bouncy. I could see AD with more upside…did IU offer him recently?

  • GFDave

Nah, I have no information other than what's available to everybody.

  • http://twitter.com/amr120402 Anthony Ritter

According to rivals yes but I am not for sure.

  • Luke72

Could understand the pull to Duke! Losing him to Michigan would be really hard to take! With another year of development who would not want this guy. Leading his team to the State Championship is a statement if one is needed!!

  • Uncle Joey

To all those who feel “so-so” on Cody Zeller… let me remind you that our current bigs are Tom Pritchard, Bobby Capobianco, and Bawa Muniru.

    Carry on.

  • GFDave

According to Hoosier Nation, Ron Patterson is in Btown for a visit.

  • Kelin Blab

That brings it home uncle joey…..ouch

  • BFowler

It seems like we always make someone's career. Especially some big goofy center. I remember we used to make Joel Pryzbilla look like he was an All American. Mike Peplowski always had a hey-day against us, adn I am convinced that Steve Scheffler was B10 Player of the Year becuase of his performances against IU.

  • FWHoosier

Okay, I have not been a Zeller fan and often question any post that says Z is a must have for the Hoosiers, but I must admit that, after seeing this video, my perception of him was wrong . He is far more athletic than I thought he was. At 6'11″ he can still put the ball on the floor for a couple of bounces and get himself in good position. He has good court awareness. He looks like he could become a monster on the boards and hits his free throws. However, I am still not completely sold. Unfortunately, these videos, or AAU games in general, don't show any kind of defense. From what I could see on this video, his timing and awareness defensively are suspect at this point but still he has the physical ability to be a sound defender. That would be the determining factor in my desire to have Zeller and I just haven't seen it yet. I am sure that CTC knows what he is getting and will put the appropriate amount of time in recruiting him.

  • http://openid.aol.com/jchris0790 iubase

good video – clearly has a lot potential. Anyone have the status of Negedu?

  • Jubilee

Is Jerry serious on this one? Tom P. lost his starting spot this year, but he could still dominate pritchard. Tom P. would have been a 5 star in 2011?

I mean pritch is a good role player, but zeller can be special.

  • IUfanPurduePhD

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean *you*, GFDave, I just wondered if anybody in the general public had any idea of which way he was leaning.

  • IUfanPurduePhD

I agree with 1, 3, and 4, but based on some of Zeller's quick spin moves (see: 59-second mark on above video), I think he could go *around* Pritch. He definitley couldn't go *through* him though.

  • IUfanPurduePhD

I like the sound of that. And I like the look of this kid too (hard to believe he's only a sophomore):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHuW1hauZAk

  • JerryCT

I fully agree except on 1 nitpicky thing …. exactly where in this video did he block out a bigger player for a rebound ?

This is a difficult but important thing in college basketball , very under rated by those of us who “see the rebound ” but donot know or care about ” why the rebound”.

  • FWHoosier

There has been a lot of discussion of bigs on here lately with CTC looking at about every available big he can find from any nation across the globe. However, it seems most Hoosier fans are looking for the classic back-to-the-basket post-up center. Zeller has even recieved some criticism from some because he is not that type of pure center. That seems to be a good thing in my mind. A “true” center just does not fit the Crean system.

Here is what I think the Hoosiers need in a big. First and foremost, we need a center that can dominate the lane at the defensive end of the floor. The offense is driven by solid defense and rebounding. The Hoosier's D needs to improve 1,000%! Our center needs to be the starter for our transition offense, which means he needs to be able to defend the post and have good court awareness so he can offer defensive help in the lane altering or blocking shots. He needs to be a solid rebounder to change possession. Then, he needs to be able to make the outlet pass to start the transition, which also means being able to put the ball on the floor for one or two bounces to get in position to make the pass.

On offense, he needs to be able to run the floor and either fill a lane in transition or follow up the break. In the halfcourt offense, he needs to be able to set an effective screen and have the mobility to roll to the basket as well as the hands to present an effective option to a slashing guard or forward. Again, being able to rebound and score on some offensive put-backs would be nice too. It doesn't really matter if he has a nice drop step, baby hook, or “dream shake” move; that would just be an added bonus.

With that perspective, a guy like Zeller seems to have the athleticism and court awareness to make the pass, run the floor, and rebound. However, I am not sure he is a defensive presence or can set an effective screen. Some of the other guys that CTC is looking at, like Michel, may actually be better at providing the defensive presence that the Hoosiers need. He also appears atheletic and able to run the floor. I am not trying to put Michel on the same level as Zeller in terms of overall ability but he just may fit the niche better. I think the reality is that none of these guys, including Negedu, Noreen, and Muniru, fit the mold perfectly and would require development of one or more aspects of thier game. So, in the end, the intangibles will be extremely important. Does the player have an agressive attitude on the court and can he be coached?

I would love to hear what other people think.

  • HoosNation

Sometimes I get all hyped up like i just slammed a M80 Monster drink! I was looking more towards what he could be with some college experience. Thanks for bringing me back down to earth Jerry!

I dont know anything about Thomas? Is he solid? Any video of him?

  • Luke72

JerryCT really like TP! One through four are all good points! TP's effort really needs to improve to play on a Big Ten level. Hope he comes in next fall ready to play! His improvement is so important for this team! We all would'nt be wanting a big man so badly if we had lived up top his potiential last year!

  • walton

    Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha

  • walton

    They might be brothers ???

  • walton

Zeller is coming to IU – no insider information, just a feeling i have and I would definitely not have a problem with it. As long as the IU shows good improvement this year – it seems like he has a lot more pressure than his brothers to wear the cream and crimson just a few miles away from his home.

  • walton

I asked it before, but don't think I got any replies………..Does anyone know who IU's coach is that is responsible for developing big guys?

  • BaseballBuc

Here is why this would be a great pickup for CTC:

    +Huge Upside
+Has a very good family, good coach, and a good head on his shoulders
+Seems to have a very good work ethic
    +Runs the floor
    +Rebounds well against bigger guys
    +Can hit free throws

Biggest reason of all: He is one of those local kids that is aware of IU's tradition and history and is exactly the type of player we need to help bring indiana back

  • BaseballBuc

It was Roshown Mcleod until he got fired. With the addition of Mcclain, i'm not sure. It might be more of a group effort.

  • Taskmaster75

Your entire first paragraph is exactly the point here. While people like to have a big man, the old school train of thought, that is just not the reality anymore, especially in high-paced systems like Crean's. Zeller would be perfect in my view, and I know about the entire lineage he comes from.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com/ Alex Bozich

This task isn't assigned to a specific coach. Crean talked about this a bit when he announced McClain and basically said it would be a group effort.

  • JerryCT

Well, he was POY in Cincy area as a JR avg 22 pts /gm w 4 / 30+pt games. He is a flat out scorer. So the big “Q” is , will we need a scorer or a big man development project by then. If you are right about MO, and I hope so, then we will need a scorer more than development project ……….. lots of “if'”s there but I am following your thinking I hope
