Combine this brief highlight, from what I have seen previously I have come to a conclusion with VO…..diamond in the rough. Has a lot of positive attributes, the ones that sticks out the most….passion, confidence/swag, and freakish athlete.

I LOVE VO! He has all the make up to be special.

Appreciate all your efforts! Kelin you're right! Passion can overcome! Victor is going to be a great addition!!

  • I'm getting more and more excited every time I hear VO comment on IU or see clips of him. After seeing his performance in the three-point contest, I feel even better. Not because he performed well, some of his misses were terrible, but because I saw some things he can do to improve his jumper, which will pay off big time for him and IU.

I was under the impression it was sort of a JR situation, where his jumper was almost hopeless. Not the case IMO. You can already see that he shoots more of a set shot. If he can work on a more typical jump shot, it could improve his game tremendously. He's so athletic and such a great leaper that he needs to use that to his advantage. If he got more lift of his jumper it would extend his range, get more arc on the shot and allow him to better take a few dribbles to the foul line area and basically rise above his defender.

It's just exciting to see a guy with this much enthusiasm for the program and so much potential, even if it's largely untapped to this point. I really think CTC has some things in VO that he can develop into a real good player.

Well, well ……… I guess he does not shoot “like he has a broken arm” after all .

If VO can channel his athletic ability and love for the game into defense it is going to be difficult keeping him off the court.

Now if his passion can become contagious to say , Bawa ………………..

Jerry I know IU had some problems with man this year and defending the perimeter and the 3pt line. You get a healthy Mo Creek, J.Rivers more focused, and VO and you could have a strong and long perimeter defending team that could also get out in transition….then we finish with a Creek 3 or a VO dunk. I think all three players have good length, like to run and this could be the style IU plays next year…

BGleas …I agree his shot is not 'shot put' like, but just needs some tweaking…gathering himself to get his lift etc. Not bad form at all and from what I have read recently he has been working on that primarily. I am glad to see he is a better ball handler than I thought. It was 2 on 2 but he seems to be able to get to the basket. Look forward to seeing some game highlights today.

Exactly, I feel that if VO is committed to defense then we begin to have critical mass of good defensive players ( Rivers, Moore ) who can perhaps instill in other players this kind of ethic.
I think of VO as our Veasley.

As you point out w/o defense to generate some early open looks for Creek, Hulls , Roth etc we tend to bog down and take both forced and contested shots deep in the clock.

My hope is that VO outplays Jones, Elston, Watford and Hulls in practice on defense forcing them fear their minutes and to upgrade their effort to get more minutes.

With the track guy, Sheehey I really hope we can get out in transition ….. even though I am not a fan of how much we overweight this in our offense

Wow, he's way more athletic than I've realized. My brother lives out in DC and told me that the area through there and Baltimore is just stocked with raw talent, can't say I'd argue against it.

Good: Athletic, like he IMO has the raw athletic ability it looks of an NBA guard. Of course his game isn't polished enough to make the comparison go any deeper than that. But with that sort of athletic ability and from what I've read on here a knack for defense, could have a stopper. Maybe someone that you can play alongside jordi or roth to complement their lack of defense.
Also I don't know the intensity the 2v2 was played at, but it seemed VO was able to take McCallum off the dribble on a few possessions which really impressed me.

Not as Good: The J, I counted him around 8/22 on his threes. Which isn't as bad as I thought it'd be after first watching, it definitely has room for improvement. He keeps his elbow in the shooting pocket pretty well, but doesn't seem to get any lift on the ball as he releases. Still players can develop their own style of shooting, and if it works for him, it works for him.

from this video, I gotta say that this excited me quite a bit, he definitely is somewhat “raw” but Creans proved at Marquette that he can develop talent and this kid has lots and lots of that.

And on a side note, I think that VO would of hung in at the McDonalds dunk contest easily, only selby and mccallum really did anything that compare to his last dunk.

Sorry I want to make one more point, does this kids frame remind anyone else of AJ Ratliff, just like a 2 inches taller version? The arms and windmill made me think AJ just seeing if anyone else sees it?

Does anyone know if IU is tracking any of Wake Forest's new recruits for 2010? Their coach was fired after a 3 year run with a 61-31 record, he made the NCAA Tourney each year, in fact they were briefly ranked #1 in 2008-09 (when they destroyed IU in the ACC Challenge). One recruit, Rivals #85, F, Melvin Tabb 6'8/225, 4 star, of Raliegh, NC; another Rivals #87, C, Carson Desrosiers 6'10/210, 4 star, of Lawrence, MA. They might reopen with the coaching change.

As I stated before Victor is a diamond in the rough in another blog! He does have a nice jump shot! 4gaurds then commented about how wrong I was in regards to his shot? He is shorter than Wilkerson but he kinda reminds me of him. The thing that stands out in this young man is that he plays the role wherever he is needed. In this day and age it is very hard to find a kid that will do this for the team when they have many quality skills. This kid will be great for us. Crean will make him a superstar! Victor we are very happy with your attitude and your skills. Thanks for choosing us. Also, nice touch on the 3 point shooting to shut up the people that say you cant do it! You go man

  • If 4guards is disagreeing with you, that you means you're doing something right! 🙂

  • GFDave

When I saw VO play in person in Jan. I thought his jump shot was flat and had a tendency to carom hard off the back of the iron. This vid shows that hasn't really changed. He also doesn't jump straight up and down, rather he comes forward a tad. I think he can improve the shot and I don't take too much from a 3 point shooting contest.

I hope he works on his dribble. We'll need him to be strong on the ball. Right now I think the dribble is too high.

One of the most important things about VO (other than him) is that his coming to IU opens the door to DeMatha and the other teams in their league. They will almost always have players we will want and having a good rep with them will be very helpful in landing future recruits. I know we are going after Quinn Cook now, but we might be a little late for him.

  • Kelin Blab

I don't know specifically but if you piece together Crean's tweets and some credible message boards with sources, they are looking at alot of these type of situations. I did read, they even looked into a former recruit Beas Hamga. Not sure how I feel about that given he has transferred twice.

  • Kelin Blab

Hammer please don't talk up 4guards, I just finished my lunch….. You made a good point that Sheehey made also about himself. It seems to me VO and Sheehey will play a role and they are ok with that. Not everyone will come in averaging 20ppg, but if these two kids with good talent are willing to come in a fill a role then I love it……

  • Kelin Blab

Anyone notice VO in the 2 on 2 is playing against “The Legend” Moses Abraham? Coincidence?

  • Kelin Blab

JerryCT…this will make you happy is a quote from VO this weekend in an interview….

I emphasize defense. I really don't like it when my man scorers on the court. I try my best to stop my man from scoring. I try and use my athletic ability and my quickness to help me. I know if I play defense then I'm going to play a lot.

Thanks for lokking out for me …………… I am wetting my pants in excitement as we speak ……… seriously ……. defense is our new frontier

  • whats up with moses still talking to IU and may change his mind before signing day….it just won't end!!!

Has anyone been to that new Candy store in Bloomington? Crean should bring all the recruits there, if he wants to sign some high profile players.
