The latest on Moses Abraham

by in Recruiting | March 24th, 2010

We considered a TMZ-style coverage approach to the Moses Abraham official visit, with live updates from outside the shrubbery of Assembly Hall, Cook Hall, Dunn Meadow and Yogi’s.

(Not really, but based on the interest in the Abraham recruitment, it certainly would have boosted page views.)

Here’s what we know: Abraham is on day two of his official visit to Bloomington. Joe Boncore, Abraham’s guardian, told Evan Daniels of Scout.com that Abraham is down to IU and Georgetown and that a decision could come soon:

“It’s definitely down to Georgetown and Indiana. He should be making his mind up when he gets back. Hopefully not the second he gets off the plane, but we do need to get this over with. I think he’ll decide this weekend. I know we keep saying that, but we just wanted to give Indiana the chance at least show him the University and stuff like that.”

Beyond that, Terry Hutchens of The Indianapolis Star wrote in a blog post this morning that the visit is going well. (Our sources also tell us the visit is going well.)

By all accounts that I have heard, Abraham had a good first day. He spent a lot of time touring the campus, Assembly Hall and the new practice facility. Along with coach Tom Crean, assistant Tim Buckley and Maurice Creek, he walked along the West sideline of Memorial Stadium in the afternoon during Indiana’s first Spring Football practice. Later, he had dinner with Crean and in the evening was entertained by Creek and a few other IU basketball players.

So that, for those of you clamoring for an update, is the latest on the Moses Abraham visit. Nothing ground breaking to report, but it sounds like a decision could come soon. But then again, we’ve heard that before.

  • Adam

Granted I am being a bit optimistic…but with Abraham here, Wilkins visiting this weekend and Yuegete (sp?) where are all of the scholarships going to come from?…especially for the 2011 and 2012 classes? Who is Crean going to ask to leave?

  • T Whizzy Y

I’ve heard rumors that Bawa is going to transfer. If he does, I believe that means we could land both Abraham and another big man.

Even though Abraham may not be a GREAT player, he should definitely be a good player, and somebody we need. And yes, landing a recruit in which others like Tennessee, Maryland, Kentucky, and Georgetown wanted… would be big for our rebuilding process.

  • tyguyhunt

Boncore's statement makes it seem like they are humoring IU. Maybe I am just reading too much into things

  • iuball23

This is a big recruit for CTC he needs this bad, probably more than Indiana itself.

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

I agree. Sounds like Moses will be a really good player, but I don't think this is even about getting a good player. CTC needs a big recruiting win to re-energize the fan base and future recruits and give a jolt to the program after two 20-loss seasons.

All speculation and not based on any facts… I would guess Pritchard for '11 and (of the incumbents now) Roth/Bawa for '12

  • marcusgresham

If Rivers wants to become a team leader he could help by pointing out to Moses all the things that suck about Georgetown

  • MillaRed

I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully he was saying it in terms of the possible decision to go to GT without seeing IU first.

Please Lord, if you give us Moses I promise I will post something nice about Jeremiah Rivers!

  • bagman

I believe that Moses will also look to take a full official visit to georgetown before he makes a final decision i believe that JB stated this last week.

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

LOL at that last part :) .

  • IUMIKE1

I think he’ll decide this weekend. I know we keep saying that, but we just wanted to give Indiana the chance at least show him the University and stuff like that.”

Thought the same thing when I read this quote from Boncore. Don't know exactly how to take it cause he also said that everybody would be surprised by his decision.

Keep digging Coach sounds like this one may be another one that falls under the heading of almost. Sure hope I'm wrong !!!

  • HoosierChan77

I have admitt Broncore's (guardian) statement was a little rough…Hopefully CTC is sellin it…Come to IU MA!!!! Be a ROCK STAR for a few years!

  • OhioHoosier

I know we're in a rough period but I hope IU can still land big recruits on its own merit without having to slander the competition

  • AceLion

I was thinking the same thing. Rivers could be pivotal to convincing Moses that IU is teh better choice.

  • tberry

Like, giving IU a chance to change a decision that was already made!!!

  • vslice

As simple as this…. A.) He either was pleasing TC and made the trip just to see things thru and really doesnt have any intentions of attending IU or B.) He is really just using this trip to make sure that this is indeed the place he needs to be. Coming here for a official visit will only further his desires to play for Indiana. Sometimes I feel like A. I feel that he is just doing this cause TC told him that he doesnt know what he's missing a that if he doenst at least come and see he might kick himself forever for not doing it. But deep down he just wants to get the visit over with so he can finally commit to GTown. Sometimes I feel like B. Now that time has passed MA has serious doubts about going to GTown. He know is leaning toward Indiana and this visit will just further influence his decision. He feels that if he goes to Indiana he will play immediately and have a chance at rebuilding a program at just the right time. At GTown he has to already deal with Greg Monroe and with the 6'10″ Center named Nick Lubbick that is coming in he will have to compete just to get any playing time this year and maybe next.

So what is it???? Is it A or is it B. Depending on what time it is depends on how I feel. Sometimes I tell my wife, hes going to IU. Yea, there is no way he will decide on GTown. There is too much going on there as far as undecision and here at Indiana he will be plugged right in. Then there are times I say, nope there is no way he will come to IU. This is just to make sure that he wasnt going to make a bad decision. Now that he has got the visit over with its time to get down to business and choose the school that he was going to choose all along……GEORGETOWN…puuuukkkeeee!!!

So I dont know. I just wish he would get it over with already. It's literally driving me crazy. Even if it means that bad news is looming I just want him to make a freakin decision. Am I the only one who feels this way??? Im almost bald and if he doesnt make his mind up soon I'm sure to be a cue ball by the time its over and done. Come on Moses!!! Come on down, come to IU!!! You will love it, and besides you will get playing time and national coverage like none other. Come on Moses, you can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • JAH

I have to agree with the above comment “this is as important to Crean as to the team” 6'9″ is NOT big for this league. While it shows Crean would be able to recruit desirable talent other top schools are intersted in, another 6'9″ guy doesn't mean we will have a terrifying interior defense (or even just apt), nor someone who can score on the blocks. Will it make Tyler or AJ more likely to come?

  • http://insidethehall.com Ben_M

I think he is merely stating that before he were to choose between IU and Georgetown…it makes sense for him to look at the campus. If I was in MA shoes I would want to take a look around and see what I'm getting into. Indiana is a great campus and the facilities are hard to beat. I just hope he likes what he see, but I don't think Boncore is meaning it the way some are taking it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1155210324 facebook-1155210324

I feel like Maurice Creek cares about our program so much. He does everything he can to make this program better. It's still such a shame that he had that freak injury.

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

6'9″ isn't small for this league either, it's right where the big men in the league usually are. It doesn't really matter how tall he is anyways, as long as he's a post presence, that's what IU is missing in the middle. Plus, most reports say his wingspan (what's really important in bball anyays) is that of someone 7'4″. That's huge!

  • kristheboss

I am not going to diverge into the ugly game that is guessing transfers and talking of “rumors” heard about players plans. Instead I will speak on only fact, I now know why Creek was in the cstor buying an armys supply of candy. To go along with this, Marvin Harrison also was a candy addict, different sport yes, but the sign of a phenom athlete, I think so…

  • aceman07

I think Watford has a huge wingspan also! Yes, I agree that matters but what really matters is can he dunk without a running start from the three point line!?!?! He looks like an athlete and I think it would be a huge win for IU and CTC just to steal a 4-star guy away from major programs like GT, Maryland, & Tenn even if he just turns out to be a decent player!

Come on! Could we get this over with for the love of God???

  • aceman07

Yeah. I agree this kid is the savior for IU's program in more ways than one. The talent is there so I hope he heals up quickly and becomes an IU star because he deserves in for the type of kid he is and the work he puts into the program as a whole!

  • http://twitter.com/IUgrad07 Deon Mitchell

I hope this is NOT another denial for the Hoosiers. Remember its not Boncore decision to make. I recall myself deciding for college. IT was MY decision were to go. Heads = IU Tails = GTOWN ok the coin was tossed and IU wins the coin toss. Try it it works.

  • Tim

Just talked to Crean and Abraham at an IU baseball game… they both seemed to be enjoying themselves and the students all seemed to be very supportive of Abraham.

  • gocubsgo16

Moses Abraham and Mo Creek were seen at the IU baseball game with crean, and Moses was helping creans daughter with coloring with her in a coloring book, Haha

  • Paul

In terms of where the scholarships are going to come from, I have heard that 1, maybe 2 players will be transferring, I heard Bawa from a reliable source and have heard speculations that the other one may be Pritchard. If both leave, we could get Abraham, Yeguete, and still have a few more for our class of 2011 which I personally think will be Crean's landmark year in recruiting. With the possibility of Marquis Teague and Quinn Cook, we definitely need to save some scholarships for next year.

    Two random musings,

1.) I talked to Maurice Creek and when I asked him about Moses he gave me a very reassuring response…if I had to bet I would definitely say he's coming here. (Didn't hurt that G'Town choked to our former PG's Ohio team!)

2.) As for Quinn Cook, Maurice Creek's family knows Cook's family, and Creek's dad is in Cook's ear about coming to IU. In addition, Cook and Oladipo are obviously fairly close since they both went to DeMatha. I feel that with Cook and either Teague or Randle, the class of 2011 could be huge along with the guys we have already signed.

  • KCknows

Here's my take on Crean and the crew visiting the baseball game: it's a fabulous/creative way to get the kid exposure on campus, in an environment where students go. Clearly, it's Crean's way to let him know that IU students know who he is already….that he's not just gonna be another one of the 15,000 students on campus (at Georgetown), but he's gonna be a diamond in the ruff of 42,000. I guarantee on his official visit to GTown, he wasn't acknowledge other than another 1 in 15,000. It has to set well with an ego of an 18 year old when you've got students EVERYWHERE calling you by name and caring about your future plans.

When you factor the notion Coach is bringing his family in a lot (etc. dinner/meals, baseball game, coloring books) with the recruiting, there's nothing better than the kid knowing he has a family to lean on. Imagine trying to make a better life for your last name without a true family support system around. A family atmosphere has to be a top factor in the decision and clearly, the Crean family, Creek, and the students made him welcome.

Win or lose, Coach has done everything possible in getting this kid to Bloomington. Hats off to him. He's put the kid in every position needed to make a sales pitch for the University, the tradition, and the future of the program.

  • marsh21

If we get both MA and John Wilkins IU has a strong chance to be better than a .500 team next year.

I like our chances! I don't believe MA takes two full days at B-town unless he's serious about Crean's efforts.
TC is doing everything he can in terms of recruiting and I'm glad he's recruiting for now NOT 2011 or 2012. Everyone that keeps talking about the in state talent is crazy to think TC should hold out a position just because IN is loaded. No matter what freshmen you bring in they are still freshman which will take a year a least to have true impact unless you have 5 stars behind your name.

Crean is feeling the pressure as anyone would in his position that's why he's not waiting.

  • IUDan

It is becoming clear that Creek is going to be a major leader on this team – he seems like a great teammate that all the guys love. I really like the way he seems to have taken a personal interest in Abraham's recruitment, as well as the recruitment of VO (sure, it helps he's from their backyard).

I really, really would love to get Abraham, but seriously, alot are putting too much on this – it was an uphill battle, we've made a ton of progress to be where we are. If we don't get him, it'll be very disappointing, but we will move on . . . plenty of other really good players out there (though we may need to wait until 2011 to see them).

  • tykees

I just want him to come here so that I can yell SWEEEEEET MOSES! All the time incessantly and with much passion and enthusiasm. Oh and the fact that he could help our program out and he seems to be making a mature thought process on his decision earns him points in my book.

  • hoostheman

Everything I've read says MA is 1) extremely athletic and 2) a solid defender and instinctive shot blocker. Plus he passes the eyeball test as a space eater down low – dude is put together. These are all things the Hoos could use even if his offensive game needs some development.

  • kesims

That does not sound good. i do not think most of us are reading into that comment too much at all. It does sound like hes sold on Georgetown (at least Boncore is) but appeasing TC and giving IU a look. Look at the sentence right before that. Boncore states that he will make a decision soon but hopefully not as soon as he steps off the plane. That to me sounds like I do not want this kid to decide he loves Indiana after the visit and commit to them instantly. I want to sit back down with him and talk to him about g*town

I guess my pessimism comes from not understanding the relationship that Boncore has to Abraham or these other overseas talent. I feel like there has to be something in it for him and the closer he can keep a talent like that close to him than the closer he is to sharing the wealth if Abraham pans out and plays pro either here or overseas.

  • HoosierChan77

That thought crossed my mind aswelll. I guess Broncore best start packing his bags for the Hoosier state. Good call, Ksims!

steve yanda said its georgetown any confirmation?

  • btowniualumn

Yea, another article shows that he committed to them….
    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/terrapins-insi
……Not 100% sure, but this looks pretty legit….

  • JWL47630

Interesting. That article was posted at 6pm Eastern, wonder why no other sources are confirming it or reporting it?

Not saying it's not true, just kinda odd given how incredibly fast people (not just IU guys, either) have been with reporting on this.

  • paynilia

Yupp its a done deal. Abraham to G'Town…heard that it was Abraham's guardian who swayed him…damn, this hurts.

  • btowniualumn

It's really whatever for me….I dont think the hype around him was deserved. I think he would have been an impact player for us, but I don't think he was a program changer. In other words, I don't think he was going to come in and automatically give us 6-8 more wins. Remember, his offensive game left some to be desired, it was his defense that had him ranked high. Dont get me wrong, we need that too. We got in late on him, made a great push, but it just wasnt meant to be. Im very OK with it at this point. I feel like there will be some better commits coming in the very near future…..we'll have a lot to be excited about in the near future…IMO

  • USMCsoldier

He will backup Greg Monroe or he will be paired with Monroe, who is coming back, to form a two-headed shotblocking monster in the post for us.

  • USMCsoldier

Hopefully he'll create a lot of “HOLY MOSES” headlines in the Big East for us.

GU didn't have senior leadership this year. They will have 3 seniors next year. And Moses will learn a lot under the tutelage of Monroe and past Hoya centers….that, along with his uncle's desire for him to play at GU is the reason why he chose GU. IU doesn't have any history of teaching the pivot like GU does. The lineage is epic and historic. GU has the longest tradition of producing big men than any other NCAA team. Ewing, Mourning, Mutombo, Harrington, Sweetney, Hibbert, Monroe. All have played or are still playing in the NBA. Those that are no longer playing, go back to GU to coachteach the up-and-coming centers. Neither IU, nor any other school has that connection.
