Brandon Mobley and Indiana?

by in Recruiting | March 22nd, 2010

Update, 10:55 am: I had some email correspondence with Donald Heath, who penned the article in The Savannah Morning News. According to Heath, the program at the Georgia All-Star game claimed that Mobley signed with Indiana. Heath asked Mobley about that and Mobley told him he was “probably going to sign with Indiana soon.” I’m not exactly sure where Mobley’s information is coming from, but again, Indiana is not recruiting him according to his AAU coach and our sources.

Update, 6:45 pm: I spoke with Brandon Mobley a few moments ago and he told me that he’s planning to make a decision on April 14. According to Mobley, the schools still on his list include IU, Cincinnati and South Carolina. He did not confirm the report from The Savannah Morning News which stated he will likely sign with Indiana. I also asked him about the departure of assistant coach Roshown McLeod and Mobley said, “It really doesn’t have an effect on my decision.”

On the flip side, to our knowledge, Indiana has not been actively recruiting Mobley since last fall. And according to Mobley’s AAU coach, Felix Taylor, this is exactly the case.

Thanks to “IUDan,” who tipped us off to the following snippet in a story about the Georgia North-South All-Star game, published today by The Savannah Morning News:

Where does the time go? Soon the kids will be flying the coop. Four have already signed NCAA Division I basketball letters on intent. Mobley, on Sunday, said he will most likely sign with Indiana soon.

Mobley, for those of you that had forgotten him, is Brandon Mobley, a 6-9 forward from Savannah. (Rivals profile here.) Given the full court press currently being applied to Moses Abraham, this development seems highly unlikely, but hey, stranger things have happened, right?

with the coaching drama at DePaul i suppose he may be wavering on commitment?

I have also seen him play and feel that the kid is raw. What I like about him is his potential. Very explosive and plays with an attitude that I think Crean like. He is a pretty good rebounder but what makes him enticing is his lank and ability to get up and down the court. However he needs to develop his skill set more and eat about 50 big macs a day. lol

Noooooo! What a waste of a scholarship this would be! Abraham or bust, and save the scholarships for the '11 and '12 class.

Hoosier76….the story on B.Young is he is wavering on his depaul committment and is friends with Mo Creek. I believe I have read somewhere IU has been to see him, not talk to him just as a bunch of other coaches. I have read some 50-50 views on Mobley, so I am still voting for a moses yeguette combo personally or Moses BYoung…..

Indiana is so hot right now.

Didn't see this coming, but from what I've read he's pretty solid. 6'9″? Check please. Just don't know where he fits, roster-wise.

  • hoosiersyear2010

Can't agree more, this sign would be a waste, and we could use next year or in two.

To me this seems similar to the David Williams story. I wonder when the last time he spoke to coach was and what was said?

When is the spring signing period, btw?

  • marcusgresham

Judging from the size, I'd say he'd be more likely to be right behind Watford than Abraham & Elston. If this is the case, I'd say either Abraham or Yeguete is a no-go.

  • Carl

Bawa is already out. Crean needs to pull his scholarship immediately

  • Taskmaster75

Perhaps Crean knows something transfer-wise that we don't? That would be my guess anyway.

Anyway, quick question, is there a certain time period in which players transfer? I assume after finals or after they graduated their school year?

  • marchus

My sources tell me he is only 6″8 and projects more as a small forward than power forward. I have also read he is a good athlete and an extremely talented rebounder.

  • aerialM

lots of players announce their transfer intentions when it comes time to register academically for the next fall semester. Most schools register in early-mid April…if it works out that Mobley does commit, it tells me he was under-the-radar and a 3rd, 4th or 5th priority for us all along but now, for whatever reason (possible transfer?) he has a chance to come here. I'd hate to see anyone leave the IU program but a 2010 recruiting class of Sheehey, Oladipo, Abraham & Mobley would not be the worst thing in the world. Far far far from it!

  • Carl

If we do not get this kid AND Abraham we should seriously consider firing Tom Crean and start the coach search for the future. I would suggest Lawrence North's coach?

Mobley isn't coming. IU hasn't contacted him since the fall.

For the record, I saw Mobley play last summer at the It Takes 5ive Classic in Cincinnati. I came away totally unimpressed. I'd be shocked if he signed with IU, but again, this is just my opinion.

These are a couple videos of the Brandon Young kid. If we end up having a couple kids transfer I am all for this kid coming to IU. From all the videos I have seen of VO and WS, seems like Young is on par of a little better. Heck of an open floor passer and on the drive and kick. The second video is pretty impressive

  • Hoosier76

just realized he is committed to depaul…on a couple message boards they were talking about Young being a possible recruit so maybe they know something I do not.

I don't know how much stock I can put in a report like that. The poster says he/she is a manager. I think it is a huge ethical violation for somebody inside the program to post info like that. How long would it take for Crean to get wind of the post and to start asking questions and figure out who wrote the post. There are only a handful of managers. The poster would be found.

Also notice how the post isn't specific enough to be disproved. It doesn't really provided information.

Anyway, I do think someone (s) is (are) going to leave. But they aren't being replaced by the Mobley's of the world (imo). We need players that can step right in and give us productive minutes. Right now the focus is on MoAb, but there are other players that will be decomitting or transferring as coaches get fired. Its that time of year and things are fluid.

I would think Bawa and Pritchard are potentially out if this deal goes down. I like the idea of Watford, Elston, Mobley, Abraham, and Bobby C. as front court options. They all seem like they are very athletic players. I also like the idea of Rivers hitting the road and bringing in a Juco point gaurd. This would bring new additions to the team where we need the help the most. If we can land teague for 11….we will be in good shape.

I did read on hoosiernation.com forums…from a source claimed to be a basketball manager at IU…that Crean sat down with 3 players in a closed door meeting. 2 of them being big men.

People have to understand that Crean wants to win more than we do. He didn't come here to loose. There will be schollys for great athletes no matter what. Although I think some of our players are good…..I think this Indiana team needs to readjust in some positions and start winning.

I think it said the poster was a friend of the basketball manager, not the manager himself. I don't know if it's true or not, I'm sure we'll have some transfers, but I do know that it is absolutely NOT uncommon for a coach to sit down behind closed doors with all players individually following the season. So, I think the poster probably was reading too much into this.

  • marcusgresham

I still think Bawa has potential to do some good things in a couple of years. Hell, he didn't look any more lost than Hasheem Thabeet did as a freshman (yes, I realize Thabeet is 4 inches taller, but if Muniru became anything close to what Thabeet did we'd all be satisfied.) Rivers is not going anywhere (sigh) because he's already transferred and sitting out another year would use up his last season of eligibility.

  • Old Sports Dude

I swa on the net that Mobley's AAU coach said that Indiana did not offer him a scholarship. What is the deal?

  • GFDave

I didn't read the actual post, just the summary above. Thx for the correction.

  • kristheboss

I didn't know where else to say this, so Currently in the YAHOO ITH Bracket, Kris the Boss is sitting kingpin. Unfortunately I have Kansas beating Nova to win it all…

  • HoosierSmitty

Weird recruiting stuff surrounding Indiana lately. Or maybe this is par for the course and we're just bored!

    Is Moses on campus?

  • Hoosier76

yeeah, lets see how mr. abrahams visit goes b4 we get all riled up about mr. mobley

  • hoooooosier

Rivers cant transfer, hes going to stay if we like it or not

  • hoooooosier

    no that would be stupid

  • hoooooosier

Thats what I meant…either way…the source was claimed to be a manger for the team..sorry bout the wording.

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

No problem Ben. I wasn't trying to go at anybody, was just making sure we all had the story correct.

  • http://insidethehall.com Ben_M

    Rivers can't play basketball either.

  • IU Fan

Rivers makes all the other guards better if only by guarding them every day in practice. I'm sure Hulls as well as some others had him to thank for their progress this year.
