Crean: “We have to have a balancing act right now”

by in Media | March 13th, 2010

Big Ten Tournament: Indiana Hoosiers v Penn State Nittany LionsAfter having a day to listen to the various interviews after Indiana’s season-ending loss on Thursday to Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament, I came across one particular question and answer that I felt worthy of our attention.

The question came from Indianapolis Star columnist Bob Kravitz, who asked the final question in Tom Crean’s postgame presser. Kravitz asked Crean to address the need for some big guys in the program and received this lengthy response:

“I think we have a lot of needs, Bob. And I think we’ve gotta develop the bigs that we have. We’ve got a very tough situation right now in the sense, if people have followed our program at all, which I know that you have, we had to get a team on the floor before we could build a program. That was last year. Then we were able to recruit guys that we wanted to, that we had a chance to develop relationships with. We’re very bottom heavy and we have to have a balancing act right now between what do we need to do in the short term versus how are we not going to have to start over again when these guys get older.”

“In the purest sense of your question, there’s no doubt we’re trying to address that in a big way. They’ve all gotta get stronger, bigger, better, more athletic that we have in the program. We’ve gotta continue to address that. But I look at our team and we also need somebody that’s better at getting in the lane. We need somebody that can get in the lane and create havoc, that can get into that paint and make decisions to get the ball to shooters. Our team will look different when you add the spacing element into it that Matt Roth and Maurice Creek bring. Obviously Maurice was our best guy at being able to absolutely get in the lane and make a play and make a good decision with it, but we’re not anywhere close to being done recruiting. And that’ll pick up again tomorrow in a big way. We’re going to address it. We have been and at the same time I have to sit here and look ahead into the future and figure out okay, how are we going to have to not do this again. That’s what’s hard because there’s a lot of good young players that we’re recruiting that we want and we’ve gotta make sure that we get those and we’ve gotta make sure we have the ability to sign them when they’re ready to come.”

A quick glance at the scholarship numbers page shows that the 2013 graduating class is likely the one being referenced as “bottom heavy,” with six grants being allocated to that group. (And technically, it’s now seven if Matt Roth is included.)

The concern, which Crean directly addressed, is having scholarships available to sign the plethora of players targeted in the 2011 and 2012 classes. The Hoosiers have offered scholarships to several players in both classes, including (but certainly not limited to), Cody Zeller, Marquis Teague, Jeremiah Davis, Marshall Plumlee, D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera, Hanner Perea, Peter Jurkin, Ron Patterson, Jeremy Hollowell, Yogi Ferrell, A.J. Hammons and Kenny Kaminski.

What’s not clear, however, is how exactly this balancing act will play out. For now, it’s best to leave this as it currently stands, but it’s certainly a storyline we’ll follow closely as we move toward the conclusion of the spring semester and of course, recruiting this summer.

I think to win in today’s game you have to extend your recruiting to get the absolute best players. But that being said, you can build a heck of a team by going after indiana kids. And they can create a solid foundation. I think Coach Crean gets that with the classes coming in and this years freshmen. It really makes it fun to watch when its Indiana kids wearing that jersey. But, we need All-Americans, not just Indiana All-state.

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

I agree with everyone that saving the scholly, if we can't land an impact guy, might be better. On the Tijan thing, I always find it funny that people call him a failure. I don't think anyone, Crean included, expected him to turn into a player in 1 year. I think everyone involved knew he was a warm body on the team that is beyond a solid citizen and would help raise the APR.

I don't think anyone had any visions of him being a true contributor on the court, it was just that IU needed a guy like him off the court and at the time there was nobody else for scholarship anyways.

  • BaseballBuc

I know a lot of people have been giving it to me for the critisim toward Tom Crean in not recruiting indiana players, but this is what I LOVE to see!

Tom Crean Twitter: Big day for recruiting in the STATE OF INDIANA! We will be out in full force. Next year we want to be in the Big Ten semis on this day!

  • LDIU

Kelin……..no doubt that the success of other programs will put pressure on CTC to really step it up and sign some of these very, very good sophomores and juniors we currently have in the state. Just fyi: being the BB junkie I am, I went to see DeShaun Thomas play his FINAL high school game this morning. Really very talented from the offensive side, but really lacks from effort and hustle. Several times he was the last player over the 10 second line on defense. Matta will no doubt work him very hard and it will be interesting to see how he responds. I was super impressed by him when I saw him in the state tournament the past 2 years, but not so impressed overall today.

I just hope IU can get some really good big men for the future and not projects.

  • Kelin Blab

Alex…..read that article this morning in Hutchings blog and the same things jumped out at me. We all can identify players that may be on the bubble, but it is clear Crean is looking to make a big splash in 2011 and 2012, which makes sense. During that time you will have upperclassmen like Creek, Watford, VJ3, Elston etc to build around and adding a teague, Zeller, or Patterson etc would help IU tremendously.

The other thing that jumped out was, we need a guy that can get into the lane……. would not be surprise IU signs a PG this year if there is one that could help out now.

  • GFDave

The elephant in the room is who leaves the program, if anybody. Seven kids in one class is way too many and completely eliminates our chance to sign a big player (JUCO or transfer) to come in with VO and WS and also then land one or more of the high profile players for 2011.

  • Kelin Blab

HoosierCreek…that is a good point and in the 2011-2013 class you could very well have a top 10 class with Indiana kids only, Crean just has to keep out Matta, Calpari, and Pitino.

Getting those Indiana kids would be HUGE and it would be something that has not been done at Indiana since….Robert was roaming the sidelines. Right now with the success of PU, Butler, and ND, Crean has to fight instate and out of state coaches even more.

  • HoosierSmitty

Here's to hoping we can land a surprise impact playing in the next two classes. I'd love to see it happen in 2010, but I just don't know. We need a big, and I hope we can get a capable a big man – either that or develop some of what we have right now (but the question is who will do that?)

I see the 2012 class being huge, but as IU fans, I think we're all ready to see something now…especially post season action beyond one game in the Big Ten Tournament.

Next year's team could be really exciting. I'm glad we're not bringing in a lot of new guys next season. We don't need to keep rebuilding chemistry. At this point, we have a solid nucleus to build around. It will only take one or two more guys to make a big difference. Can VO be one of those guys with his defense? I think so.

  • Kelin Blab

Smitty…I may be by myself on this but if IU didn't land Moses, Wilkins, or Yegeutte I would be content on developing what we have right now and the 2011 and 2012 class will have an extra scholly to use and at a good time when IU could be in the position to go to the tourney with an strong upperclassmen group of Juniors and Seniors….

If they could get rebounding and shot blocking out of Bawa for next year I would be the happiest man in the world.

  • Luke72

Bawa development is a key to having some fouls to give and some inside shot blocking! Big Key!

  • dougy

Oh. My. God. Did i just see TWO Plumlee's block ONE shot??????? Sure hope Crean is all over Miles…

  • IUMIKE1

You are not by yourself on this. I too believe that if we cannot get one of these guys, or someone of similar impact that we are not aware of right now, that we should save that scholly till next year. IMO one of the advantages our rebuilding process affords us, if you can call it an advantge, is that we can reach an acceptable improved point, team wise, and still give the bigs, espicially Bawa, that we do have even more minutes than if one of the above mentioned players were to sign on. I'm not saying I do not want one of these guys to sign I'm just trying to point out what the up side might possibly be if they don't. This would also allow Crean to maybe be a little more selective in who he wanted and maybe better our chances to sign that player by allowing him more time to pitch him and that player being able to see a more clear picture of where we are as a team. I think this holds true maybe for Bawa more than anyone, if he stays. Saving the scholly would also allow the new assistant to possibly make a difference with who we are already recruiting or possibly being able to make inroads with someone we couldn't before but can now with whoever the new assistant might be.

I guess what it boils down to is that we have to trust CTC to make all the right decisions which I guess is how it should be seeing that he is the one with all the facts and info and more importantly has the final say and is the one who has to answer for it if it does not work outl.

  • GFDave

I started the year thinking the same thing about Bawa and hoping by his senior year that he might contribute points too. But I've lost that vision in the wake of Tijan's relative failure. Given where we are as a program, I've come to conclude that we simply can't use a scholly on Bawa anymore. We need players that can contribute immediately. I think it would be better for him and us if he found his way to D2 or maybe D3.

  • Casey

Pretty sure you meant Marshall. But once K offers him he'll be pretty much locked.

  • walton

I don't understand the “scholarships numbers page”. It appears that if we sign up another player/recruit for 2010/2011 class that we would have too many scholarships the following year. Can someone clarify this for me?

  • walton

not really sure the best way to propose this question but………..what control does the university have with scholarships already offered/accepted? Are they basically 4 year contracts or what? I know that if a player transfers, leaves early, or graduates then the scholarship spot opens up, but what other scenarios could happen to open these spots? Can the university end a scholly? I know it probably wouldn't look good, but…just curious.

  • IUMIKE1

If we can find someone that can do just that I would be for considering that but if don't want to just replace him with someone else that turns out to be a project and possibly even a bigger one than Bawa. If we can't sign an impact player for the coming year then IMO we need to give Bawa one more year and then reassess the situation for these reasons 1) Crean said that he didn't even really have any coaching to speak of during his senior season and the still signed him. Must have seen something there he liked. 2) If part of the reason RM is no longer an assistant is because he was not making the progress that Crean felt like he should be making with the bigs than Bawa's lack of improvement may be partly due for that reason. 3) The summer between freshman and sophmore, where most players make their most imporvement, will give us a better idea as to how his long term development will may go.

At the risk of sounding unappreciative of any player on the roster if we are going to have one of the bigs transfer the one with the least upside seems to be TP unless this also is a product of the seemingly low amount of progress made by the one responsible for that very thing. Fair under the circumstances or not we have seen the amount of improvement for TP between his freshman and sophmore years.

  • msturm

Try playing on an ankle as big as his and see how well you respond. Pretty good game by him considering.

  • Kelin Blab

I believe the Big Ten allows you to over sign by one scholly….it is all confusing to me.

  • Hidden_Hoosier

We can dissect the situation ten times to Tuesday. God knows I have with friends and family. But here is the bottom line for this off season in my opinion; we need something to happen this off season that will get the Hoosier nation excited. If any coach in the nation can do it, it's Tom Crean. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a jaw dropper.

  • Uncle Joey

You are correct. Although over-signing seems to happen quite a bit in college basketball. The scholarship issue usually ends up working itself out (see last season with the transfer of Williams and Story). The players already on the team may foresee their playing time decrease by the recruits on the incoming classes, so they may choose to leave and go somewhere else where they're guaranteed more court time. Transfers happen a lot. It's not uncommon.

  • Kelin Blab

    In Bawa's defense….

IU has a lot of offensive fire power that can surrond Bawa who may not develop that offensive game. It would allow Elston to play the four, CW to play the three and Bawa to roam the lane defensively, set screens, and receive dump off pass for dunks. I have not given up on Bawa, I wish Crean would have given him more time during the season but this offseason is extremely important for him.

How this will play out has already begun and continues tomorrow….
+Crean cutting the minutes of TP and Rivers, could this be a warning shot?
+Moses makes his decision, there are rumors of a surpise pick..I have read
+Final 4 coming up, asst coaches being interviewed more than likely
+Watch and see where Crean is recruiting

  • MillaRed

I think it's way too early to kick Bawa to the curb. He was a top 15 rated Center on most recruiting boards even though it was understood he was very raw.

With the very late blossoming of Elston and Capo I'm not sure Bawa couldn't have done something himself given the opportunity (why was Tijan getting minutes again? Very puzzling)

With another off-season of strength and conditioning I think VIII can cut down on turnovers and handle the point.

    PG – VIII
    SG – Creek
    SF – Watford
    PF – Elston
    C – Bawa

Bawa gets the short hook here with Capo. Or maybe the other way around. I think this line-up really adds to our depth with the other gaurds and wings we are adding in VO and Sheehey.

Crean makes a good point with penetration. Rivers makes too many terrible decisions. Creek is our guy. We have already seen it. When he gets in the paint it opens up VIII, Hulls, Roth, CW and Watford for those 17 footers. All of which can knock it down with consistency.

I would like to see Bawa fail on the court before we write him off. It will be a huge off-season for him and I for one am rooting for him.

  • MillaRed

Believe it or not Kelin, I entered the post below the same time you did. Looks like we are on the same page…….

  • GFDave

I can agree with that. But Tijan is/was better than Bawa. What does that say about Bawa's chances going forward?

  • tberry

Seems to me that Crean has to show some real improvement next year or many fans will be out for his job. I don't think he can just stay with the players we have and promise better recruiting the next year, unless he is very, very sure they are going to be great next year. Expecting many fans to continue with the wait for the future routine will wear very thin.

  • GFDave

You are right. If we sign somebody for this fall, we will be one over the limit for the next year.

Also, per your other question. Scholarships are year to year.

  • GFDave

I can't remember the game, I think it was in December. Bawa is in playing D. The other team puts up a shot. Bawa continues to face his man looking for a box out or lacking recognition of what just occurred. The shot misses and hits Bawa in the head from behind. That scared me.

But, with that being said, if it weren't for this scholly crunch, which to me is a real issue that has to be fixed, I'd be satisfied with Bawa remaining.

  • mark

How many scholarships does IU have left? I know they want Selby, Moses … but I thought they only have 1 scholarship left after Olipado & Sheehey?
The way I see it, Crean’s problem is he fills up too many scholarships with role players. Obviously, last year he had no choice. Perhaps it was even a bit of a panic — he just had to get a team out there. But this year, he can be more selective. Yet, he’s already offered 2 scholarships to guys playing the same position, with roughly the same skill sets. We need a big who can score in the low post & rebound, & we need a PG who can penetrate & make good decisions & shoot. Where are the scholarships going to come from?
Also: did anyone but me notice that the most productive big guy, on a per minute basis, was consistently Derek Elston? It took Crean 28 games to finally see the light & insert him into the starting lineup (all Elston did thereafter was average nearly a double-double). How Crean could go 28 games giving TP & often JC more playing time, is beyond me.

  • aceman07

I was paying attention to Bawa during the shoot around periods at Thursday night's game and I saw something. One, I saw CTC talk to him a few times and I saw some real skill and potential there. He handled the ball well, had a nice 15 ft jump shot and seemed pretty smooth. Of course, no one was guarding him because it was the pregame but, he definitely showed potential because unlike Tijan, he can walk and chew gum at the same time. Seriously, during the same warm up period, Tijan could barely dribble the ball from the three point line and shoot a layup without fumbling the ball and from the left side he missed 2 layups unguarded at 7'0″. Bawa just glided down the lane and even would spin and go behind his back. He also looked good on his jumper from the foul line area.

Having seen this and having seen what CTC did with Derek Elston, I have changed my stance after the last game of the year and I really feel like CTC was holding Bawa back for a reason. I think he wasn't ready but does have some promise and CTC didn't want him to go out there and either develop bad habits or get terribly discouraged.

That or he's a freaking idiot and hasn't learned a play all year . . . one or the other!

Let's hope it's the first one!

  • Kelin Blab

I think we also forget MillaRed, that this is Bawa's first full offseason with the coaches and trainers. He came late with his eligibility, didn't have the advantages the guys had over the summer and pre-season, which put him behind physically. I am rooting for the kid. Going into next year, I would be ok with Bawa, Capo, and Elston as our bigs and an ALL OUT push for Zeller, Plumlee or someone in 2011. I think next year with an improved and bigger, Capo, Elston, Bawa as bigs and some rebounding wings like Sheheey, VO, and Watford, we will be ok…..

In all honesty, I don't think Bawa is the post that should be the most worried right now as to his place on this team…..

  • aceman07

I completely agree. I think it would almost be a waste to give up that scholarship with Zeller, Plumlee, Teague, etc. in next years class and then just as much or more potential recruits in the '12 class!

  • aceman07

Right on . . . see a response I made above. Same feelings and I saw some potential the other night!

  • dabig

“I think we have a lot of needs, Bob. And I think we’ve gotta develop the bigs that we have.”

Anybody else read this as saying there's no recruiting of bigs right now?

  • aceman07

But at the same time, against OSU at home he came in for the last 4:50 and played very well including a block against Lauderdale and a good defensive rebound. He also altered a shot from I believe Madsen. He did miss a defensive switch but recovered to foul Lauderdale and prevent the basket and immediately pointed to himself and said my bad. That was really the last we saw of him.

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

Scholarships are basically one year contracts. Players actually have to sign every season, and a coach can revoke a scholarship or pull between any season.

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

I don't know if I agree with that. I really don't think Tijan was as good as Bawa at the same stage. But, your overall point is understood, Bawa isn't where he needs to be. I hate to play the hypothetical game, but could you imagine how different this season could have been, and the perception of the program, if Creek had stayed healthy and if Bawa was able to really contribute this year?

Oh well, I guess it doesn't matter now.

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

I agree, and it's why I think a Teague and Zeller commitment, no matter how unlikely it might be, would be huge this summer. I don't care if Teague is one and done or even if he isn't as good as advertised. If IU can win more games next season (NIT) and go through the season with the #2 player in the country committed to IU which would be another top 10 class (2 out of 3 years) it would be an enormous boost on the recruiting trail and to the program in general.

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

I remember that game, he altered at least 4 shots in that last 4:50. I thought after that we were going to see him get a few more regular minutes.

  • vslice

Well I think we are all pretty sure next year will be the best year of TC tenure yet. I really dont want to get into the Mo Creek/Roth thing once again but its obvious it effected the team and the results. This is year one in the rebuild and your saying that if we don't have better results then its TC's job??? Im not sure what else we can do but wait for the future after the entire team except Kyle Taber left which Indiana fans have understood and debated at great depth. I do expect the fans to be patient, they is no other thing the fans can do and TC is not going anywhere. Regardless next season will be better, it will be year two of the rebuild process. Year two not year four, not year five. Lets give coach a little patience and I think TC will bring the results. If after 2012 we still haven't made progress and haven't brought in some good recruits I could understand the whole “out for his job” thing, until then I think fans should try to be patient and happy with the progress TC and the team has already made.

  • HoosierDavey

I read that as “forget getting a big for 2010,” not necessarily beyond that. I'm sure he is surely thinking a big for 11 and 12.

  • Kelin Blab

umm Wow…Bloomington South lost…the dream matchup will never happen…South v North Central.
Gotta love Indiana H.S. basketball (even though it is class basketball)

  • trailrunner

The problem with revoking a scholarship because of ability is that this sends a message to other potential recruits that IU is not loyal to their commitments. That is why it can be damaging to offer to a borderline prospect. As I recall Bawa was ranked around #101 in his senior class. However I do think if the coach sees a better future for the player at another school, then being honest and helping the player find a good fit is mutually beneficial. If TC believes that Bawa can develope into a force then possibly redshirt him next year. If not then have a conversation about what would be best for his future. Possibly speak to TP and Roth as well. I think that Lynch needs bruising tight ends and TP and Capo might excel on the gridiron. They could still play on the squad with a football scholarship. We urgently need to open up a couple more scholarships for the next 2 classes.

  • walton

Crean cutting TP's minutes could be a warning shot. Most people here are talking about Bawa and not so much TP.

  • Kelin Blab

That part I understand …..bawa is being mentioned alot…however, if you look at upside and how this season ended, bawa might be in a better position than TP going into next season and the offseason.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com Alex

Selby is no longer considering Indiana.

  • marchus

man you guys have got to stay up to date with your recruiting news. This board is far behind…… moses abraham to make his decision tomorrow.

  • marcusgresham

I still think Bawa will be, if not spectacular, at the very least solid by the time he graduates. He has a good, physical frame, he's athletic, and he's intelligent. His problems this season were more with where to be than anything. Unlike Tijan, I think Bawa at least can catch the ball when it's thrown to him and will get to the point where he's more instinctive (learning to be instinctive–isn't that an oxymoron?)

  • marcusgresham

I think Elston having a couple of good games at the end of the season was extremely important for a few reasons: 1.) It showed the other big guys (Pritchard, Bawa, Capo,) that they need to step it up if they want to see substantial minutes next year because this guy might just take off; 2.) it stopped the “Elston's going to transfer because he doesn't get to play” rhetoric; 3.) It gave all of us SOMETHING to look forward to for next season. I think he can be a Goran Suton-type player in a couple of years, and probably a stronger version.
I fully agree about finding another PG who can drive & shoot—anybody know who Carmel's PG was this season, because it seems like IU has a trend of letting them walk on? Seriously, though, there are potential PGs on the radar, or so it would seem from the list of guys who've received offers.

  • LDIU

I saw the same stats as you did on Elston and came to the same conclusion. It puzzled me all year on why Derek wasn't playing more. Some say his defense was weak, but I contend that EVERYONE was weak on defense and all need to improve. We all begged for more more playing time for Elston all year and it took CTC 28 games to finally realize what we all knew. I hope that next year (if they don't improve) that TP and JR are spot players only.
