Roshown McLeod no longer with IU basketball program

by in Media | March 7th, 2010

UPDATE: 4:58 p.m. by Alex Bozich

DeAntae Prince of The Indiana Daily Student reports that McLeod will not speak on his dismissal, but instead will issue a blanket statement in the coming days to all media.

UPDATE: 10:57 a.m. by Zach Osterman

Tom Crean fielded questions this morning on the Big Ten coaches’ teleconference regarding the departure of Roshown McLeod, including the timing of the move. His response:

“There’s probably never a good time. You can’t focus on timing. You’ve gotta focus on what the right decision is. That’s the decision that I made.”

“It’s about putting the program forward and putting the program first. We’re going to do the things that we need to do.”

This release just popped into my inbox from J.D. Campbell, Indiana assistant athletic director for media relations:

Indiana University men’s basketball coach Tom Crean informed assistant coach Roshown McLeod on Sunday that his contract would not be renewed for next year and he will no longer be with the team effective immediately.

“There is never a good time for something like this, but it is a decision that had to be made moving forward,” said Crean.

I can’t say I’m surprised by this news, considering McLeod was absent from Saturday’s win over Northwestern. McLeod’s recruiting prowess never really paid big dividends in Bloomington, which is most likely the reason he won’t be returning. The search for his replacement begins … now.

  • Jacqueb

Kenny Payne played at Louisville in the 80′s. He was on the 86 NC team.

  • hoosierfanintn

I think you bring in Calbert Chaney and he recruits for you. What better person to sell the program than one of its all time greats! I would’nt be apposed to Smart, Bailey or any former player. Dakich, Crews, Joby Wright did it for coach Knight

  • Kreigh_Smiths_Short_Shorts

Really, we have no idea what is going on behind the scenes, so any speculation as to why McLeod is leaving is…speculation. And all this criticism about the recruiting strategy is a bit silly. To expect 5-stars to come to Indiana, where the program is in disarray and the likelihood of getting to the tourney is very remote even if said 5-star came to play, is wearing the crimson colored glasses at this point. Yes, IU is a storied program. Yes, IU will be back. But it's going to be a few years until there is any consistency in terms of wins. You can't fault the recruiter for all the ones that got away if there isn't much for them to come to in the first place. Those types of recruits are still a couple years off.

  • http://insidethehall.com Ben_M

First of all, Coach Crean is more upset than us with 10 wins this season. We have a good core of young players and something has got to give in Bloomington. I’m not going to claim I know anything about it, but Crean is a tireless recruiter and if he demands more out of his staff. If RM wasn’t getting it done then Crean has got to do what he has got to do. I never really liked RM in the first place. How can a guy sell IU when he went to St. Johns and Duke. Heck he didn’t even know the right place for him. The bigs did not develope either. We all want a winning team; let Crean do what he has to do.

As a replacement? I don’t know….I like an IU guy. Cheaney wanted to get into coaching, but he took a job in the NBA. I know Bailey would be interested….but I don’t know about all that. Coverdale…..I would be cool with. I don’t see Fife leaving his gig. These are all gaurds/small forwards too, so i don’t know how well they would be for coaching bigs.

Wiki seems to think Payne is a lock for the kentucky ass. job:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_Payne

  • cooper

Not sure how one season is enough for a guy to prove he is or isn't a great recruiter. Especially, when you are recruiting against consistent 20 game winners and your team won 6 games or whatever it was last year.

  • BaseballBuc

You are correct when you say that his recruiting wasn't up to par. But isn't he a big man coach? Is there a chance that part of his exit was caused by the lack of development of our bigs? Feel free to weigh in.

Also, this could open a door for Kenny Payne to possibly come to indiana. Sounds like a longshot, but he would be a great assistant coach pick up.

  • Kelin Blab

I actually didn't even notice he was gone…..

    Ok two things….
    1. Would anyone object to us hiring world wide wes? Hey you said you want 5star recruits….?
    2. Fill me in on Kenny Payne I have heard his name alot….who is he and why should we want him?
    3. Could Crean bring in an IU guy? or a recent young grad? Coverdale….Smart…..

  • OhioHoosier

    1) YES!

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/SPGOT33W43BNOXGO6SFWIU2FWU Jason

    Hire Shawn Teague!!!

  • Casey

I think this is exactly the main reason he was let go. Maybe they realized that we need more than a name. People are already starting to throw in former Hoosiers as a replacement, but I think the our priority is to find someone who can recruit and develop big men.

  • jgongora86

This is a dumb move by Crean. You can't fire a guy because of bad recruiting. We had the two worst seasons in IU history. Thats a tough sell when you compete against UNC, Kansas, Duke, and Kentucky. If we would have had half way decent seasons we would have easily gotten Irving, and Kendrick two athletes that wouldn't have given as a stare if it weren't for Mcleod.

  • CutterInChicago

Um, I will pass on the World Wide Wes as assistant concept. I suspect he would make the Sampson regime look like a bunch of Boy Scouts

  • Dirk

Hopefully this signals a shift in recruiting strategy. The recruiting decisions of the last year deserve harsh criticism. They wasted a lot of effort with Irving, Selby, Abraham, etc. They put all their eggs in Irving's basket to get him to come, including foregoing recruiting other players at his position. Getting in late on 5-star kids didn't work for Mike Davis and it won't for Crean.

  • GFDave

Just speculating here, but if RM had known connections that he couldn't make work, how was he supposed to be effective going forward?

So let's see. The first comment on the board criticized Crean for wasting his time on 5 stars that he couldn't get. The next comment suggests patience. Quite a few fans (not necessarily on this thread) attack all the 3 stars. Sounds like coach might just have to do it his way, cause keeping all the natives happy is impossible.

  • Andrew

jgon86, your post makes zero sense. You say “you can't fire a guy b/c of bad recruiting.” How do you know why he was fired? No one other than the people intimately involved with the program knows exactly why McLeod is gone, so for anyone on here to speculate why is pointless. You also say we would have easily gotten Irving and Kendrick if we had halfway decent seasons…again, how in the world do you know this? Did they tell you? Plus, Irving eliminated us and Kendrick committed to Memphis before this season even started, so the 20 losses this year had nothing to do with their decisions.

  • http://insidethehall.com Ben_M

I like Greg Graham….head coach at Warren HS. Thats my guy…..unless there is someone out there that has a good player that wants to come with.

  • IUMIKE1

The fact that he was not there for the last home game that was a conference game that was on senior day makes me think it may have not been an amicable parting of ways. Have also heard the “Kenny Payne” name somewhere but can't remember where or in relation to what. Seems like it had to do with recruiting at some school out west. Assistant coaches are not something you hear alot about but is a very intregal part of any team and in alot of ways. Crean should take his time and wait to see what happens in coaching world after the season ends before he makes a hire unless he has no doubt who he wants and wants to make sure he doesn't end up somewhere else before he can talk to him.

How long before someone starts throwing Dakich's name out there ? Don't think he would take it and don't want it to even be considered. Need someone that can help our bigs develop as quick as possible since it looks like what we have is what we are going to have to work with for next year possibly the next two. Hopefully we will need someone that is fluent in French and whatever language they speak in the country that Moses originally hails from (Nigeria ?) Speaking of Moses has anyone heard when he intends to announce who he is going to sign with. I know they said that him being sick had pushed that decision back but didn't say till when at that time.

  • Roninjeffersonville

A member of the 1986 NCAA champion Louisville Cardinals, Kenny Payne joined the Oregon staff in the summer of 2004. He helped reshape the offense and defense that produced the remarkable 2006-07 season when Oregon went 29-8 in winning the Pac-10 tournament and advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight. Payne is a veteran of 10 professional basketball leagues worldwide, including a four-year stint with the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers.

  • IUMIKE1

Being from southern IN I thought I remembered that name from years ago at UL but didn't think my memory could be that good or that it was a different Kenny Payne. If memory serves me right he was from the Jersey area as a high schooler. Wasn't he part of what was at the time called “the Camden connection” I know there were a few really good players that ended up playing for Crum via what was called the Camden connection.

  • Roninjeffersonville

No Mike He came to Louisville from Northeast Jones High School in Laurel, Miss., where he was a Parade All-American and the state’s player of the year.

  • marsh21

This move shows Crean is not going to waste any time with this program. He needs the right fit and knows waiting another year or two could only hurt the program. It also puts everyone on notice to work hard within the program and there is no room for mistakes.

I hate to see someone lose their job but I'm sure he will land on his feet.

  • JerryCT

I doubt that most of us have any insight into this one way or the other. I just hope we upgrade from RM when we replace him.

I am from Indiana but I could care less if the replacement is from Indiana or played at Indiana etc. I want the replacement to be a dynamite recruiter and player developer…….period.

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

Believe me, I'd love to have a former player that can pull in the recruits, but I think the bigger need is basketball coach, not figure head. I think we need a guy that can recruit, but also has plenty of experience coaching the game.

It seems many of the former players fans are calling for, have zero coaching experience.

  • DJ5

I doubt Crean would take a ten year deal and fire a coach because of one bad year of recruiting. If I am not mistaken, this year's crop of freshmen were ranked in the top ten nationally.

IU has has so many issues from off the court behavior to poor academic performance to player defections to the on-court issues of turnovers, inconsistency, and the lack of an inside game. There could be a variety of reasons for this move.

By the way for all of those “ranking” people out there, the number 1 (well, former after Saturday) team in Syracuse, has ZERO players who were ranked in the top 50 and only 5 ranked 51-100. They missed the tournament, patience prevailed, and now they are a contender for the title.

  • Bryan

    1. I don't think the WWW idea would go anywhere. From what I've read, he's getting ready to become an agent for coaches. So while you couldn't hire him per se, I guess the logic is that you hire one of “his” coaches, and you gain access to his player pipeline.

    2. Here's an article that explains a bit of Payne's recent background, and his connections to Wes and Calipari. http://www.zoominfo.com/people/Payne_Kenny_5453
Beyond this, he's credited with pulling in some Detroit area recruits that helped Oregon make waves in the NCAA tournament a few years ago. You do wonder what's being going on since then, if Oregon has slipped enough that they're letting the Ernie Kent and his entire staff go. I think I go two ways on this. One, I would like to get someone who is a solid recruiter, and help build the program. But, he is part of the whole WWW group, so who knows what that would also bring with it.

    3. I'm not sure what IU guy you could bring in that would lend instant cachet. McLeod was supposed to be our “relevant” guy on the staff – someone who would show up in someone's house and be someone the kids would have seen play on TV. Cov or Fife would really only work in-state, and while I want to get more local kids, IU does need to look elsewhere for talent as well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Young/1199847156 Ben Young

Let us not forget that IU self reported a recruiting violation by McLeod. That could have something to do with this. Crean obviously knows more about this than we do, and it probably has more to do with his coaching/development skills in practice.

  • GFDave

Yes, the coaches convention is during the final 4.

  • GFDave

Yes, the coaches convention is during the final 4.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com Alex

It was a secondary violation and I'm relatively positive that it's totally unrelated.

  • kesims

im pretty sure the decision was pushed back until the 14th…so we should know by the end of the week

  • MillaRed

My recollection is the McLeod hiring was based on his experience as a big, teaching as a big, and recruiting bigs. I also recall he knew this guy that knew that kid and had coached this AAU kid. None of which ended up at IU.

We all have been nervously awaiting the 1 or 2 bigs that are sorely needed for a full year. Meanwhile, Pritchard, Tijan and Bawa haven't exactly developed into what we were all hoping for.

Do the math people. It didn't work out. I realize dismissing him now may look a little seedy but perhaps the writing was on the wall. Maybe it was discussed and they mutually agreed to move on now so both parties could fill another position.

I have no problem with this. He was a well-known college big with a few connections and it just wasn't a long-term fit. It happens a thousand times a day in the real world.

  • GFDave

I know that there are folks out there that want to look for conspiracies and violations and things like that but you are right, IMO the man just didn't pan out. He got fired. I have no malicious feelings toward him and really haven't thought much about him at all. That's Tom's job.

  • JerryCT

Isn't there a big convention of coaches etc around the NCAA finals ? If so splitting up now enables TC to get the jump on new hires and enables RM to get prepared to seek new openeings.

Another question after these last 2 seasons is whether this is the complete set of dismissals.

  • MillaRed

I left a company after 10 years because we seemed to be moving in different directions. We talked it over and mutually agreed and are still in touch. No one was fired. No one quit. It just made sense for us at the time to go that route.

Whenever someone leaves people start throwing that “fired” word around and there is an instant negative feeling and an assumption someone did something wrong. I would like to think they just parted ways and I'm sure Crean will help him as much as he can to move forward.

FYI, Kelvin Sampson was “FIRED!” “FIRED!” “FIRED!”

Glad I could clear that up.

  • zlm95

HIRE COVERDALE!!!! or somebody that can bring in great recruits

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

What off-court and academic issues does IU have? Are you referring to the Sampson years, or right now? I don't think there are any right now.

As far as the ranking go. They're not made up, they're real. Are there misses sometimes, definitely, but you can't argue that pulling highly ranked recruiting classes consistently doesn't pay-off in performance for the most part. You're dead right on Syracuse, but they're one of the few teams in that position, the vast majority of highly ranked teams have the highly ranked recruits.

  • HoosierFromCT

I took Crean's Coaching of Basketball class and it was pretty much ran by his staff. McCleaod was a nice guy. I enjoyed the couple classes he taught. Sucks to see him go but whatever it takes to bring us back.

  • http://insidethehall.com Ben_M

Whats the chances of us being in the CBI bracket? Mich St. Purdue Wisconson and Illoinis are going to the NCAA….Michigan, Minnesota, Northwester may be heading to the NIT…..could we be in the CBI? I think it would be really great for these kids….and they may win if they can come together.

  • Gunner146

To answer several questions asked earlier, Moses is expected to commit to Georgetown. McLeod was hired from the Atlanta Celtics AAU team and was expected to deliver a pipeline of prospects from that team to Bloomington. He was successful getting Christian Watford to IU, but not Jelan Kendrick and others. IU needs to focus on keeping in-state talent home like Marquis Teague from Indy.

  • http://www.insidethehall.com Alex

Bennie Seltzer was largely responsible for recruiting Christian Watford.

  • GFDave

    tx

  • http://matthewjenks.blogspot.com/ Matt_J

    Alan Henderson?

  • http://matthewjenks.blogspot.com/ Matt_J

Which is conveniently up the road this year…

  • Andrew

Actually, FYI, Kelvin Sampson “RESIGNED!” “RESIGNED!” “RESIGNED!”

So did Mike Davis. IU only fires football coaches.

  • HoosierFromCT

    CBI?

  • MillaRed

I hear you Andrew. On paper he resigned, as did Pete Carroll, and Calipari and all the other slime balls that broke the rules.

In my crazy world, Sampson was fired. Mike Davis was just a bad hire and needed to coach a program with less stature.

I personally don't have a beef with Mike Davis. He accepted a once in a lifetime opportunity. We never should have put him in a position where he could not succeed.

  • MillaRed

Was just kidding around Dave I don't have the answers. Only speculation.

  • MikeinNC

Hard to know what to think here – on the one hand recruiting has been unimpressive for bigs and the players we have did not seem to develop much this year. On the other hand, it's only been two years, and we are all painfully aware of the extenuating circumstances. So McLeod could have been let go because his performance was so far below expectations that Crean felt the time was now…maybe there was a philosophical clash that was then reflected in the inspired performance on Senior Day. Who knows? But it's equally possible that Crean was giving McLeod and himself a head start in the job market. The Conference Tournaments and the Final Four are where a lot of deals get done, and by cutting ties now, Crean gives everyone more time to network and make the most of those job-searching venues.

  • Taskmaster75

That may be true, but they do have a consensus top 10 guy (Fabricio Melo) coming in, so you can't tell me that they aren't looking out for the top talent.

  • http://twitter.com/IUgrad07 Deon Mitchell

It looks like the demands of OLD IU is getting to Tom Crean. Roshown McLeod firing is an excuse for the lack of development of NO potential players e.g. Toilet Paper oops Tom Pritchard, The Africans (Jobe and Bawa). And no one in the near future with better ability on the RADAR.

Pritchard max potential will net 6pts 6 rebound a night. I think I may be given Pritchard a bonus on the rebounds haha..

Only if that Eli Holman never threw that flower pot
