The Minute After: Northwestern

by in The Minute After | March 6th, 2010

FINAL SCORE: Indiana 88, Northwestern 80, OT | Box Score

This win did not come easy. When it seemed like the Hoosiers had it locked up in regulation, when if felt like this 11-game losing streak was finally — finally! — going to be over, a couple costly turnovers by Verdell Jones let Northwestern stick around in regulation.

And in OT, there was still that “IU-has-the-lead-but-is-it-enough” feeling up until Tjian and Fink came in to close it out.

But yes: it was a win. An impressive win. A sign that the future — for as bleak as it’s looked the last several weeks — is bright.

Let us count the ways:

1) Great call by coach Tom Crean to start Derek Elston and insert Verdell Jones at the point to start this game. Time and time again Elston proved his worth. He had a terrific dunk to ignite the crowd and nice tip-in for two early, and finished the game with 17 points — a career-high — and eight boards. He just brings an element to the court IU hasn’t had all season; Elston is a high-energy player with a big body that can score in a variety of ways and finish around the hole.

This kid can be a double-double machine for years to come.

And without Jeremiah Rivers at the point to start this game, IU didn’t turn the ball over until the 10:25 mark of the first half. That turnover was committed by, of course, Rivers.

But because the Hoosiers started out so well this afternoon, it gave them the confidence to realize they were not only in the game, but that they could win it. The first ten minutes of bullet-proof play were of the utmost importance.

Now, when the Wildcats went into that half-court trap in the second half, IU did have some turnover problems — espeically down the stretch — which let the Wildcats hang around. But including the OT period, the Hoosiers had 17 turnovers. Clearly, that’s still not too good. But they’ve had more in only 40 minutes of play this season, not 45.

2) Defense leads to offense.

Not only did IU get more opportunities to score at the start of the game because of the lower amount of turnovers, but they were great in their 2-3 zone this afternoon in Assembly Hall. Bobby Capobianco stands out as a guy that was denying entry passes and getting his hands in passing lanes. (He also sacrificed his body and got a timeout as he fought for a loose ball on his back at the end of regulation, which was big.) For the game, IU racked up 10 steals. And they were scoring in transition off the steals — 23 of their points this afternoon came off turnovers.

And yes, again, NW also capitalized off IU’s miscues, as the Wildcats had 21 points off turnovers.

But this is not how it’s gone the last 11 games. IU is the team losing the turnover battle, getting killed in transition. It might have only been two points, but for once, IU flipped the script and became the aggressor. For once, it was the Hoosiers using turnovers to their advantage, not the other way around.

3) Jordan Hulls.

Three after three after three. Eight of them. And they came at the most important times. A career-high 24 points. Putting his body on the court and keeping the ball with IU on a couple occasions. Four assists to three turnovers. Forty-four minutes of play.

When people talk about Jordan Hulls, when they talk about his will to win, his drive, his determination, this is what they’re talking about.

4) The offense as a whole.

So many of the ITH faithful have complained about the woeful assist-to-turnover ratio of late. But IU had 15 assists this afternoon to their 17 turnovers. Sure, it could be better. But 15 assists? This team hasn’t sniffed that in recent games.

IU was able to capitalize on NW’s 1-3-1 zone and lack of athleticism and a dominating big man. It was about getting the ball to the free-throw line and looking for slashers to the rim from the baseline, or drawing a defender to that middle of the zone and kicking out to someone for an open look on the perimeter. And as I’ve previously noted, it was also about getting out on the break and scoring in transition.

IU broke 60 for the first time in a month, and they didn’t need OT to do it. They hit 43.3 percent of their shots from the field, not terrific, but better than they’ve done in most of the past 11 losses. Hulls’ terrific 3-point performance led them to shooting a blistering 43.5 percent from beyond the arc. Their free-throw shooting was also on point, as they hit 26-of-32 for 81.3 percent.

I actually found myself impressed with some crisp passing today. Again, a rarity the last several games.

For one afternoon, on the backs of their freshman, the Hoosiers gutted out their 10th win of the season. The heart, hustle and desire was there. This, my friends, was long overdue.

And a sign of the promise to come.

obviously a great effort by a group of young guys…very encouraging. i was most happy with j rivers starting the game where he belongs…on the bench. this guy has shown throughout the year an inability to finish around the basket, no touch from the outside, and a propensity for turnovers. i have been disappointed in not only his play, but lack of leadership. even though i am a little concerned about his size, this team should be and will be for the next three years in he hands of j hulls.

  • LDIU

It was so nice to see Elston, Hulls, Watford, Capo, and Jones play/contribute the majority of the game. I hate to be mean, but having JR only play 16 meaningful minutes and NOT in the game during critical moments was a highlight for me. He just drives me nuts. Better days are ahead!!

  • Indiana_Knight

Abraham would be the biggest possible pickup for this recruiting class for just that reason. If Watford can get more minutes at the 3 next year, because it’ll take him at least two years to build enough strength to really, really be effective down low, then suddenly our size on the court becomes much, much better instantly.

The effort has been there all season, but it was nice to see it culminate in a win tonight. The team really stepped up their effort and concentration on the defensive side of the ball and made Northwestern take difficult shots down the stretch and especially in the overtime period. It was great to see them slapping the floor and getting really excited about playing good defense. Our defense has been even more anemic than our offense, so that was a welcome change.

This team is so young and has so much promise. Verdell improved so tremendously over last summer so I’m really excited to see how these guys play in Assembly Hall next fall. The athletic slashers we add should at least help us penetrate zones a bit more easily and having more shooters on the perimeter is going to make our offense work much more smoothly. I’m excited about the Big Ten Tournament, we’ve played well on neutral courts, but I’m even more excited about next year.

  • Chad

I really liked the line up out there of Hulls, Jones, Watford, Elston, and Capo. This should be our starting lineup for the Big Ten tourney. I just hope the rumors are not true and Watford and Elston do not transfer. Otherwise we will be in big trouble next year.

  • IUDan

I missed most of the game, but caught the last 10 minutes of regulation and overtime. I tell you, I really liked the fact that we were led by our freshman and VJ3 (who had too many TOs in crucial spots .. . let's get that straight this summer, please . . .). Elston and Bobby looked great up front with Watford (very solid double-double with some key rebounds – good work big man). I think this is the core group we'll see alot of next year with Creek, obviously.

I hate to say it, but we did look that much better without Rivers on the floor. I'm not a huge fan of VJ3 running the point, but between he and Hulls we do have some options there. I know people have been clamoring for Elston, but it looks like Crean has done the right thing with him – he is really blossoming, and I think this will pay dividends next year and for years to come.

This was really an important win today – especially given the guys who ended regulation and blew it open in OT – they are the nucleus. Hopefully it gives us alot of optimism going into a very important summer. This is when this team will get better, and hit the ground running next fall.

GO HOOSIERS. Let's play a few next weekend!

  • Dirk

Crean started with a 2-guard lineup and stuck with three bigs most of the game. I've been wanting to see more of this. It was effective today. I like seeing Watford, Elston, and Capo on the court together to finish the game.

  • HoosierChan77

I loved everthing abut this game….The line up is where it all started. IU playd with that energy and hustle that is our tadition. JH went Beast mode from 3(remided me of Coverdale) and Elston,Watford Capo lead this senoir day finnally!!!! Hope the recruits were blown away by the energy @ the hall. Love our Hoosiers and this site aswell!!!

  • iulineman

Loved Coverdale ( one of my personal favorites to don the crimson and cream) but think hulls will surpass him in years to come Didnt catch what recruits were at game Loved the lineup at the end of the game Future will be bright Know its only one win but its hard not getting excited finally

  • valpohistory

If Mich. win's, they pass NW I believe

  • aceman07

I like Indiana against Michigan in the B10 tourney more than I do IU vs. Minn so I think this was a huge win to assure a 10th place finish in case PSU ends up beating Purdue!!! I like the matchup against Michigan better because Minnesota is so stinking big and it also means that if they win a game in the B10 tourney they would most likely get Purdue again in Indy which would at least make for a wild atmosphere to start the game, so in my opinion this was a great win for more than one reason, not to mention it prevented the worst streak in IU history and was a senior night win!

Elston is going to be good and so is Jordan Hulls. I still think with one big man like Abraham or someone like him IU is a contender in two years with a healthy Creek, Elston, Watford, Hulls, VJ3 and company! Elston crashes the offensive glass and still has those kindergarten oopsy type moments but makes up for it with his offense and hustle on the glass. Hulls sees the floor well unlike the rest of IU's guards and can shoot. Insert shooters like Roth and Creek and at least there's something positive to look forward to in the future!

  • ronb

Hulls had a great game hitting shots. I have to say I was surprised to see Jones moved to PG since he can get turnover happy but he did a good job except for a couple at the end of regulation. Good move by Coach. It gave Hulls a better change to get good shots and he hit them. Elston had a good game and played some defense also. Watford had another tough shooting game but had 11 rebounds. But the guy who did the most to help in the second half and overtime was Capo. He clogged up the middle and stopped the easy buckets that Northwestern got in the 1st half. The whole team did a good job getting offensive rebounds with Capo and Elston getting 9 of the 18 offensive boards. I thought it was great to see 4 freshman and Jones get this team a much needed win!! Those 4 and Creek are going to make us proud the next few years. Nice win Hoosiers!!

  • aceman07

Wasn't it rumored that Moses Abraham and Yuguete (not sure on the spelling) were supposed to be there today? I hope both were because man would it be nice to add a couple big athletic forwards!!! It seems to me that CTC has been reading this board because it really seems that in an attempt to silence the IU faithful he found a working lineup with Watford and Elston on the floor together with Capo, Hulls, and Jones which is what many of us have been begging for all year. I know this is just my imagination but, man, doesn't it seem like IU fans are smart, savvy basketball fans???

  • HoosierDavey

We were MUCH more stable offensively with Hulls and VJ3 at guard getting the starter minutes. I really think Rivers needs to come off the bench and get those kind of minutes…it just becomes so helter-skelter with him in there. Hulls, Verdell, Bobby, Christian, and Derek played very well together and should be our starters IMO.

  • walton

Who are the best players on IU's team (position factored in)? In my opinion: Watford, VJ, Hulls, Elston, Capi. I think these are the players that need to be on the court together the majority of the game (and should have been all season). Of course they can't play all game so occasional substitutions: Rivers->VJ, Dumes->Hulls, Pritchard->Elston,Capi, the occasional Tijan/Bawa,………..running out of big men (which has been our problem), but also the occasional (very occasional) 3 guard line up.

But the majority of the game should be those top 5. Creek might replace Hulls next year unless Hulls can step up as point guard. Got to get more height and strength down low – and another ball handler would be nice. I think the pieces are almost in place. I am optimistic going forward.

  • walton

accidentally posted without reading the other comments – seems like it is pretty unanimous about the line ups. sucked it to all season long to see it.

  • GFDave

I thought Jones was going to throw the game away at the end, but everybody hung tough and we got it done. I'm glad for them.

I think a key to the game is that we are a physical match for NU. They don't have big, strong men. They have skinny kids just like us. The difference is ours are frosh and theirs are upper class men. Once we get bigger and stronger we will be competing among the upper echelon.

Think about how well we could be playing if we had a really strong on the ball point guard who could shoot, dribble drive and dish without turning it over. Marquis Teague, did you watch the game?

It was great that WY watched us win and saw how Elston and Watford excelled in the offense.

  • http://insidethehall.com Ben_M

Did I see Watford at small forward? And we won? Go figure.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1790604551 facebook-1790604551

So true, if we could add Abraham to play center, and Elston, Capo, split the PF. Then Watford could play the SF all year next year which would be huge!!!!!!!!!

  • MikeinNC

Great to see the seniors go out with a win to end their careers. They deserved it. Psychologically, getting to 10 wins has got to be a subtle positive for everyone. Not too tough to see the makings of an effective line-up for the B10 tourney and next year, is it? So much will depend on the level of commitment and effort that goes into the off-season conditioning program by the key guys. There is certainly the makings of a .500 team next year.

Does anyone know who they are most likely to face in the first round of the B10 tourney? Sure would love to see them steal one game.

  • JerryCT

I thougth Crean deserves the game ball:
    1) seemed more relaxed and so did the team
    2) FT shooting was incredible, incl JR
    3) stuck w Elston as he should have
    4) stuck w the zone which really surprised me but it protected us from the screens
    5) played JR on the wing where it appeared he was getting dangerous back door opportunities

Hulls had a great game, the one we have been waiting for most of the year. I thought he actually had showed some offensive promise against PU which he built on today.

Elston , I have said, may be our player with the most upside and he has begun to show it.

Still you got to love the NW offense which seemed to break down our zone for open shots , which tonight, did not drop with regularity.

  • hoosierodi

Now it's time to win the Big Ten Tourney and go on to win the National Championship.
    Movie making time!!

  • Luke72

Great game! Good note to go into the tournament! Nice adjustments for the second half by TC. All over effort was the best since we lost Creek! Would't it be fun to see another win before the year ends!

  • Wish

I have to admit, Hulls played a helluva game. Credit is due and credit is given. My hats off to the kid, keep it up.

CW played the 3 a bit, Elston got a bunch of minutes, everyone crashed the boards and IU won. That's kind of how I envisioned the entire season being played, minus Hulls going off, and it was good to finally see. Nice way to end the regular season.

  • because it's Indiana

    Hulls: 44 minutes, 24 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal, and 4 ASSISTS. HOW'S THAT FOR A TREND!

If we can continue to get 63 points from our bench we will do just fine. Yes, I'm teasing, I know it was Senior Night. Hoo, Hoo, Hoo, Hoosiers!!

  • Kelin Blab

At one point during the game JerryCT…NW was moving so much I got confused…they NEVER stop moving and have a lot of things to throw at a defense….but IU defended them fairly well.

  • Kelin Blab

+ Crean benching Rivers, starting two energy guys elston and tijan, was a great move.
+ Our zone could keep us in a game in the tourney
+ This is what Hulls did at South, not so much the points, but made things work better. There is NO reason for Crean to start Rivers in the big ten tourney and possibly next season
+ Elston is playing with confidence at the right time, which has helped CW.
+CHristian looked more relaxed this game
    +F/T shooting was great

    BONUS Items….
    + Congrats to the seniors.
+ Deven Dumes reminds me of the 3yr old walking up the steps carrying a cup of red juice….You just know he is going to screw it up, but you are thrilled when he finally puts it down.
+ Hope Yeguette saw his place at IU. I would love to have him. I know he isn't a big but I looked at a big ten lineup that goes…(6'5, 6'6, 6'5, 6'8 and 6'7)…that lineup is OSU and it seems to work for them.
+ Love the Mo Creek story….prior to the game….31 straight 3's…damn!
+ CW is worn down. The dunk he had, barely made it in. The kid has no lift/legs right now but is still competing.

    GREAT WIN!

  • Kelin Blab

Yeguette there, moses not, Kaminski there also from 2012.

  • because it's Indiana

atta boy Wish…feels good eh? Jordy won't be putting points like that up every night but we can all agree that it was refreshing. Cheers!

  • Kreigh_Smiths_Short_Shorts

Anyone still think they've given up? They made me proud today.

  • because it's Indiana

Michigan can be streaky with their outside shooting. The 2-3 Zone and a Hoosier friendly Indy could equal another big win. I'll be at the game Sunday at MSU, but I doubt we'll see much zone. It will be a battle though, maybe Michigan will punch themselves out a bit.

  • Kelin Blab

Is that a done deal….we play michigan? If so I may have to find a ticket…

  • valpohistory

I'll respond to yours since I agree with almost all of your points. I'll just post them in correspondence with your points.
-I liked him sitting Jeremiah first too. I think he played excellent off the bench when he didn't have to play out of position. I think he's very dangerous as a slasher when he doesn't have to handle the ball. I also like putting Verdell at point (though very scary handling the ball sometimes). It almost have the same feel as what Ohio state is doing with Turner. Tijan starting energized the crowd. BIG TIME.
-Depending on who we play, we probably won't use that zone. If we play Michigan, like it is very possible we will, we won't be running that zone since they're better shooters than NW and will just shoot over it. Even though it was good for tonight and protected all of our guys, we rebounded pretty weak at the beginning and we'll get destroyed by Michigan on the boards with Sims, Harris, Novak, and Perry crashing the boards. If we play NW though, it should do wonders again.
-Loved Hulls today. He played excellent. He was on fire. He really played well. A lot of people have been saying he's the leader, but for now, that role goes to VJ. I do love his skill set and Jordy will continue to do good things for us. If we play Michigan, Rivers will start (I would think.) When he played them at The Hall, he played excellent defense on Manny. I believe Rivers was one of the largest reasons we won that game. I think that benching opened his eyes up, BIG TIME. He can really be a big time player for us, but he has to stick to the things he does well, like slash (as he did today), play good defense, and make the routine play. Sometimes he makes the spectacular play, but he also sometimes makes a bone-headed play. I really like what he brings in terms of athleticism and ability, he just needs to get it together! The benching was a good move, like I agreed with above.
-It allows CW to move over and play 3, which is where he is really the most comfortable. We didn't really get to see how the 3 big lineup would do for man to man, so it might not stick when we play another team, but the offense flows well, as well as it helping the defensive side of the ball for rebounding. CW had some HUGE rebounds today, and Elston look good on offense. When Elston plays defense and rebounds, he played more and he plays well.
-I think he stepped up big time. He was pretty vocal and whenever we needed a stop, he was challenging shooters, and he was grabbing big time boards. He puts weight on, and he is a big time player for us next year.
-They've really improved here, like they have in all facets of the game. They really are getting better (I've posted areas I feel they've gotten better in previous posts) and they will really take off this summer, especially the freshman. It's often said that players improve the most during the summer between freshman year and sophomore year, so it will be very intriguing to see how our guys play and the roster situation shakes out.

    BONUS
-Send the seniors out on a good note!
-I laughed really hard reading that
    -He'd be loved here!
-Wow. That's insane, I hope he shoots that for us next year!
-Absolutely, but he was huge for us today. He did excellent on the boards. Huge.

  • valpohistory

I changed my mind on that the other night after I heard Elston talk about the minutes. He basically said all of the things I believed all along, being they were mentally and physically drained and then they were playing the best teams in the big ten. We played a bottom of the big ten team, we made our shots, rebounded, and played well. It was an incredible game to be at. Tijan's speech made me laugh so hard I almost cried. Very touching about his mother. Let's pull off a win in the big ten tourney and make some noise!

  • valpohistory

If Mich. win's, they pass NW I believe

  • because it's Indiana

I forgot that Northwestern holds the head to head tie breaker with Michigan. It looks like unless Michigan upsets MSU we will play Northwestern again. Get a ticket anyway!

  • http://www.prinsportsblog.com BGleas

Not sure what to add, seems everyone has said it. The core going forward obviously is: Creek, Watford, VJIII, Elston, Hulls and Capo. Hopefully Sheehey, VO and anyone else we add in the '10 class can only add to that core.

It's a core that I think can make any recruit comfortable with joining, especially guys like Zeller, J. Davis and all of the '12 kids IU is targeting. Hopefully Teague too.

  • marsh21

A major difference today was the lack of Rivers and Dumes. Their roles were reduced and it showed on a positive note. It's amazing when you take away the poor drives, quick 3's and turnovers those two make how that opens up other opportunities for the rest!

Rivers will need to make solid improvements over the summer or he won't see much time next year because VO is more athletic and can play defense just as good.

    Great job today!

  • walton

why you got to bring up transfer stuff? i really don't understand it all. 1.) they all knew what they were getting into before coming to IU, 2) they get tons of playing time. They must really hate IU as a school or Crean as a coach to just pack up and leave.

  • Kelin Blab

IU pulls off a Big Ten tourney win this year, it VAULTS them into next year already with confidence and makes them hungry for more. I also thinks it will pay off with a committment from some player….my early prediction.

2010 – Yeguette committs in the next few days! Kid wants to play early, has a chance here, saw the crowd support and the pieces we have.
2011 – We lose teague, J.Davis and Zeller both sign up by the fall….

  • iurons

I did not see stats on individual minutes played but it seemed with Pritchard and Rivers sitting on the bench more we were able to have three or four offensive threats in the game at the same time. In many of the past games during the losing streak there were times when we had two or three offensive threats on the floor. It may not seem like much but VJ and Watford are not strong enough physically ( yet ) to beat constant double teaming and they have been the only go to guys in tough situations. My past posts have stressed the need for more talent and depth but seeing four freshman and Vj on the floor together makes me think with the addition of next years recruits and the return of Creek we could be much improved next year , Maybe talk of NCAA with a couple of breaks and hard work in the weight room for our current players. I I don't think sixteen or seventeen wins is out of the question if our two recruits are able to help immediately.

  • valpohistory

All liked except the losing Teague. I was reading everything and was really excited and fired up then you threw a dagger!!!!

  • SSTRAUB

Also 2013 recruit Daryl Baker From Jefffersonville was in attendance.

  • silkyslim

Woooo-whooooooo!!! An awesome win! Played like IU bball should be. This is a great building block & morale booster for our guys! Great job Hoosiers! Also liked the line-up change, good move CTC!

  • kentuckyhoosier

just a quick comment on Teague , Im not sure if he will go to IU , but as a Louisville resident , most U of L fans believe that he will NOT go to Louisville which he has been leaning towards for quite some time . Lets hope IU can get this kid .

  • honestbob, angola

I was so happy with the win. I totally agree with all the comments I have read. There have been so many games during the losing streak that I was startng to question TC, not about his coaching ability, but was afraid he was trying to be their friend more than their coach. I think there have been times (minesota game) when he needed to pull the whole starting five and set them down, somtimes you see things from the bench that you don't see while on the floor.
Besides it could only help improve the kids that work their butts off everyday in practice.
Anyway it was great to watch the win, and give us hope for the future,
now at least one win in tourney and we will be smiling and ready for next year.

  • SSTRAUB

So you don't have anything negative to say about Jordy today? I'm sure that will change If we, as a team, have a bad game in the tourney. Good Team play usually results in good individual effort. As was the case today.

  • Brent G.

Nobody thinks Watford doesn’t have a ton of upside, but I’d be interested to know what the record is for most shots blocked in one season because he is definitely pushing it. It isn’t always a matter of strength, either. He just doesn’t extend himself and release his shots from a high enough point. If he can do that, and gain about 15 to 20 pounds of muscle, he’ll be able to post up with consistency and finish those “and one” situations that he almost never does now.

  • walton

Rivers is getting a lot of bad rap for sure. I think River's main problem is his attitude. Too many times have i seen him shake his head or make some face at plays where you just need to leave it alone and get back at it. I was at one game where it looked like he was upset about something and barely showed any effort the whole game. He also appears to get down on himself too often.

I think Rivers could be great off the bench. I noticed in this game that when he did come in that he kind of surprised NW with quick slashes to the basket and he got a couple points. He can single handily change the pace of the game. He can also play good defense as well. I think if Rivers can just get over whatever bad attitude he has and accept that he will be a bench player unless he proves otherwise then he will be a great contributor next year.

  • kentuckyhoosier

Finally , Ive been so critical for the last few weeks , So i will keep my post short and just ” well done ” finally coach …. coached ! It was great to see these guys have a good time again . And man hoosier fans are awesome , really ” we ” are always there !!!!!!
