I read about it, so I'll try to share the story from memory. Historically IU does not hang Big Ten banners. However, in 1983 the team was locked in a very close battle for the Big Ten Championship. In one of the last games of the regular season the fans sold out the arena and made the environment very difficult for the visiting team. After the game coach Knight grabbed the microphone and addressed the crowd, saying that they would need to be just as loud in the season finale which would determine the conference championship. IU won their last game and coach Knight hung the Big Ten Championship banner, deemed "The Fan's Championship" to thank them for their support.

The banner had been taken down during the Mike Davis tenure.

I have heard that Coach Crean had a part in having it rehung in Assembly Hall.

I'm sold on Sheehey. I hope he signs sometime soon-ish...off topic, but did anyone see pat forde's "forde minutes" column on espn.com? he's got IU as the 5ht best program of the last decade. and also has sampson as the #1 worst hire of that same decade...
