A sign Bob Knight will be back in November?

by in Commentary | October 23rd, 2009

bobknightYesterday, the Herald-Times reported that anonymous donors hooked Indiana up with $75,000, which will be used to reach a lawsuit settlement with Bob Knight, the last of such unresolved disputes between the former coach and the university.

The agreement was spelled out in a memorandum drawn up by the Indianapolis law firm of Ice Miller LLP and signed last week by representatives for IU and Knight.

It is believed the move is in reference to a lawsuit the former IU basketball coach filed against the university, arguing that IU failed to represent him in a lawsuit filed against him, while he was an employee of the university, by former assistant coach Ron Felling.

The timing of this sure seems coincidental, eh? The Hall of Fame induction ceremony Knight will be honored at is next month, and this money suddenly appears out of the blue? Smells of someone really wanting Knight to come back to Assembly Hall, trying to pull a few last strings so the old coach breaks down and enter the house he built one more time. But here’s what’s interesting, there was actually some wording in the memorandum that said: “Specifically, the resolution of this matter creates no obligation for Coach Knight to participate in the upcoming induction into the IU Athletics Hall of Fame. The choice whether to attend or not to attend the induction ceremony is completely up to Coach Knight and has nothing to do whatsoever with the resolution of the litigation.”

Even if that’s the case, this is still an olive branch extended to the former coach. And if this is the last of the disputes between the former coach and the school — at least legally — it’s clear IU has done much to gain favor with him. There’s a whole new administration on board that wants to honor Knight. There are no more ill feelings from the university’s end. They simply want to publicly recognize his legendary run at the helm of the Hoosiers.

But for as much as IU has done, it really doesn’t matter. This is Bob Knight. He dances to the beats of his own DJ. If he doesn’t show up, it wasn’t for a lack of effort by IU. It’s because, as always, he does it his way. Even if that way is stubborn and petulant.

Report: Indiana offers 2010 Florida guard Will Sheehey

by in Recruiting | October 22nd, 2009

According to a report by The Courier-Journal’s Jody Demling, Indiana has extended a scholarship offer to 2010 Sagemont (FL) guard Will Sheehey. The 6-4 Sheehey played this summer with the Florida Rams alongside Syracuse commit Fab Melo, Louisville commit Josh Langford and 2011 five-star Damien Leonard.

Matt Ramker of the Florida Rams and Sagemont  coach Adam Ross both confirmed on Thursday night that that IU now has an offer on the table for Sheehey.

Sheehey has already visited and been offered by Stanford and George Washington and also has an offer from Northwestern. But Ross expects there will be more to come. Vanderbilt, Washington and Michigan are other schools that have also started to show some interest.

Rivals.com rates Sheehey the No. 131 prospect in the 2010 class. According to Jody’s report, Sheehey’s father played at Syracuse and his uncle played at Virginia.

Indiana currently has commitments from two players in the 2010 class — David Williams and Victor Oladipo.

Q & A: Bloomington South’s Matt Carlino

by in Recruiting | October 20th, 2009

carlino071109_optAustin Etherington wasn’t the only 2011 commitment at Assembly Hall for Friday’s Hoosier Hysteria. Matt Carlino, who moved to Bloomington over the summer and will play at South this season, attended his second straight opening IU practice. Inside the Hall caught up with Carlino on Monday evening for a Q & A:

On last year’s atmosphere at Hoosier Hysteria versus this year:

I thought it was a lot more comfortable because Coach Crean has gotten to know the town really well and they’ve gotten to know him. This year people have more of an idea of where we’re at and where we’re going.

On how the adjustment has been moving from Arizona to Bloomington:

The adjustment’s been good. It’s just more time indoors which means equals more time in the gym. I’ve gotten along with all my teammates really well. They’re all really good guys. And all the coaches on the staff are really great. The school aspect is actually a little harder.

On the benefit of playing in open gyms at IU:

It’s really fun. It’s challenging, so that’s always fun. It shows me that basically I need to work on my strength because they’re way stronger. Other than that, it’s just fun playing with all of the IU guys and then watching them play during the season.
