Q & A: Moses Morgan

by in Recruiting | September 16th, 2009

mosesmorgan091609Moses Morgan, a 6-5 wing from Palo Verde High in Las Vegas (NV), took an official visit to Indiana this past weekend. Morgan is rated No. 138 nationally in the 2010 class by Rivals.com and is the son of former IU player Winston Morgan. Inside the Hall caught up with Morgan for a Q & A.

On his visit to Bloomington:

“It was a great experience going out there and seeing the campus. I was real impressed. Everybody knew who I was, knew who my dad was and they’re real basketball fans. I got to see how the team practiced, the individual workouts. I was real impressed with how hard they went and how Coach Crean pushed them. I got to spend time with Verdell Jones, Jeremiah, Christian. The team went to the football game and we went to dinner a couple of times with Coach Crean. It was a pretty good experience.”

On upcoming visits to other schools:

“I’m going to DePaul on Saturday. I did have Arizona State, but they just got a commitment, so I’m not sure I’m going to be going there. So it’s just DePaul right now.”

On the schools still involved in his recruitment besides Indiana and DePaul:

“There are still other schools. I’ve got Minnesota and Clemson.”

Former Indiana President Myles Brand passes away

by in Media | September 16th, 2009

brand2.jpgAccording to a report published moments ago by The Detroit Free Press, former Indiana President and NCAA President Myles Brand died today at 67.

NCAA President Myles Brand died today after a nearly yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer. Brand had served as NCAA president since January 2003 and had led the association through initiatives such as academic reform, increased emphasis on presidential leadership and discussions on fiscal issues in college athletics.

“Myles Brand was a dear friend and a great academic leader. He was a tireless advocate for the student-athlete,” said Michael Adams, president of the University of Georgia and chair of the NCAA Executive Committee. “Indeed, he worked to ensure that the student was first in the student-athlete model. He will be greatly missed.”

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr. Brand.

Bawa Muniru: One handsome man (part two)

by in Media | September 15th, 2009

You may remember this post about Bawa Muniru with a similar title from last fall. We’ve had some second-hand reports of Bawa being spotted around campus in a shirt and tie and even in a suit. This picture, dropped by Tom Crean on Twitter today, confirms that Bawa may be the best dressed player in Indiana history before ever taking the floor:

Welcome to Bloomington, young man.

Irving playing recruitment close to the vest

by in Recruiting | September 14th, 2009

kyrieirving6051609A trio of Indiana coaches – Tom Crean, Roshown McLeod and Tim Buckley — paid a visit to the home of Kyrie Irving on Sunday evening. Irving’s recruitment has been a primary focus for Indiana fans since the five-star guard played in front of 2,000 fans at Assembly Hall during the adidas May Classic.

If you were hoping Sunday’s visit would spark a clue from Irving on where the Hoosiers might stand in the process, you’re going to be disappointed. Irving is keeping a tight lid on his recruitment and offered few details in two brief interviews published today.

“I like to keep everybody on their seats,” Irving told Dave Telep of Scout.com. “If everyone says I’m going to Duke or Indiana then that’s their opinion.”

As for Sunday’s visit from the Hoosier staff, Irving told Dustin Dopirak of The Herald-Times that the visit went well, but offered few details.

I couldn’t ask anything more from the coaching staff,” Irving told Dopirak. “I’ve met with them a couple of times. This was more about them meeting with my father and the rest of my family.”

It’s tough to say where Indiana might fit in Irving’s plans. The St. Patrick’s point guard made his first visit to Bloomington last November and ever since, the staff has been in hot pursuit. When Irving became eligible last January after transferring to St. Patrick’s from Montclair Kimberley Academy, both Crean and McLeod were in attendance to watch him. And they followed him as closely as any school did over the summer.

The next step in the process will be three official visits – September 25 to Duke, October 2 to IU and October 9 to Texas A & M. Others could follow to push Irving to five visits in total. But where will he end up? That’s anybody’s guess.

Stacey Poole no longer considering Indiana

by in Recruiting | September 14th, 2009

This should really come as no surprise after the Victor Oladipo commitment, but Jacksonville (FL) wing Stacey Poole is no longer considering the Hoosiers. The 6-5 Poole was scheduled to take a one-day trip to Indiana next weekend.

As recently as July, Poole spoke highly of the Indiana program and assistant coach Bennie Seltzer: “It’s a big basketball school, not really a football school,” he said. “Everything’s based on basketball at Indiana. I’ve got a nice feel for Coach Seltz. He’s a real good guy.”

Poole is down to South Carolina, Clemson and Kentucky. He’s rated the No. 27 prospect in his class by Rivals.com and No. 58 by Scout.com.

A couple of other recruiting notes from the weekend:

+ Kyrie Irving tweeted the following about his in-home visit from the Hoosier staff on Sunday evening: “Indiana visit went really well…sc.” Dave Telep of Scout.com should have an update later today from Irving.

+ Moses Morgan took his official visit to Bloomington and we’ll try to catch up with Morgan later today for an update.

+ 2011 commitment Austin Etherington was in attendance for IU football’s 23-19 win over Western Michigan at Memorial Stadium.

Hall Notes: Kyrie Irving, Moses Morgan and more

by in Media | September 10th, 2009

irving051609a“Hall Notes” is a gathering of news clips mixed with opinion that, on their own, probably wouldn’t have made it on Inside the Hall. But throw them all together and well, here we go …

+ Kyrie Irving (pictured) hosted the Duke coaching staff on Wednesday night for the first of his in-home visits. On Thursday, both Devils Illustrated (Rivals) and The Devils Den (Scout) decided that squeezing every pro-Blue Devil comment out of Irving was the perfect way to cause an uproar on the IU message boards. It worked. Remember, it’s far from uncommon for a recruit to gush about a visit immediately after it happens. The Indiana coaching staff will make their way to Elizabeth (NJ) on Sunday to meet with Irving and barring any scheduling changes, he’ll visit Bloomington on the weekend of October 3.

+ Moses Morgan will visit Indiana this weekend and Dustin Dopirak of The Herald-Times caught up with the 6-5 wing before he boarded his flight to Indianapolis. If Morgan’s comments are any indication, the commitment of Victor Oladipo earlier this week will not factor into his decision. DePaul, Minnesota, Arizona State and Clemson are also in the running for Morgan.

+ Tom Crean announced the hiring of Drew Adams and Mason Revelette in a press release on Wednesday night. Adams, 24, will be the coordinator of basketball systems and Revelette, 22, will be a graduate assistant. Most of the chatter concerning the announcement has centered around Adams, who has strong ties to the Indiana Elite AAU program. Adams served as a student assistant the past two seasons at Tennessee and is a graduate of Bloomington South where he played for three seasons.

+ Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star reported on Thursday that the IHSAA is close to ruling on the eligibility of Bloomington South guard and IU commitment Matt Carlino. According to Carlino’s father Mark, a decision is expected in the “next week or so.”

+ Mike Pegram of Inside Indiana/Peegs.com tweeted late on Wednesday that Marquis Teague could potentially visit Indiana on Saturday. At this point, it’s hard to view Teague as anything but a heavy lean to Louisville.
