The NCAA has dramatically limited the options available to you if you aren't a qualifier out of high school. Remember there's three basic requirements:

1) Graduate from high school
2) Get 16 core course credits (basically 16 year-long courses or 32 semesters) from NCAA approved courses
3) Have a corresponding test score and GPA on the sliding scale (higher GPA means lower test score needed, and vice versa)

If you're missing core course credit, you can only get one credit after graduation (three if you have a learning disability). If you're short on the GPA/test score scale, you can still only use one class after graduation to increase your GPA. You can continue to take the SAT and ACT until you enroll in college.

So if they were off the mark by a little bit, prepping for a year might make sense. But if they're coming up very short (hard to believe because IU is still working on this), then you have to go the JUCO route. Enrolling at some other four-year school makes no sense because not only is the kid not eligible where he goes and can't get a scholarship, he has to sit a year as a transfer.

Also don't forget that IU could file for a waiver if the athlete is a little short of the requirements. I'm not going to speculate on what Bawa or Creek's home situations were like so I have no idea what mitigating factors they might have. But the turmoil at IU might make help because IU didn't have the time to advise these kids like they normally might have.

Finally, as far as scholarships go, if either doesn't get eligible, the NLI is null and void. The scholarships are freed up, so Crean would have more to use down the road, or if they were going to prep IU could re-sign them in November.

Thanks for the correction, Alex. I've had Hurley in my mind as his coach for a long time and was pretty pessimistic about Kyrie and IU for that very reason. Storm clouds may be breaking for me on this.

could we have an all PG lineup? If Irving stuck around, we could play Hulls, Carlino, Irving, Teague and I guess we still need another. J Davis?

Although its clear that Kyrie likes IU, I didn't see anything in the article that suggests he's coming our way. Duke made a big showing at Orlando. World Wide Wes is also tough competition. I'd like him to come, he's a very good player and, in the interviews I've read and heard, he comes across as a good kid.

The chances of both Teague and Irving at IU? Very small. I'm not sure it is even desirable, given that they both need the ball to be good. Also, two consecutive one and done point guards would not be conducive to program development.

Kyrie thanks for the link. Very interesting. But keep in mind what I said earlier about Louisville and Fab Melo. Recruits say thing then change their mind very fast.
Let me pass thisd one to you:
http://www.zagsblog.com/2009/08/05/calipari-id-...
Kentucky is wanting 3 point guards

Ron, most of the recruiting sites list J Davis as a PG and when I saw him play that was the position he played the majority of the time. In fact, I'd say his jumper was one of his areas that needed a little work. I would call him a big, strong and physical point guard.

Anyway, I think it's a lot like Bill Polian and the Colts, we'd like to fill certain positions but ultimately we're going to take the best available player. We all get pissed off when they take another offensive player, but man look at the guys we've picked up in the first round. Plus with our offense we've reallly got any number of guys who can bring the ball up the floor and we already have J Rivers, V Jones, J Hulls, and Carlino on the way, all very capable of being the point.

I also like the "bird in the hand" philosophy - give me J Davis ASAP!

I also wonder if Teagues dad is displeased with where Marquis is leaning and continues to push it back, or maybe they were a little surprised that Fab Melo didn't choose Louisville.....
