Around the Hall: Carlino to South and Crean at Huber’s

by Alex Bozich in Media | May 28th, 2009

Around the Hall is recommended reading from the Inside the Hall crew.

+ Mark Carlino, J.R. Holmes and Highland (AZ) athletic director Rod Huston talk about the Carlino’s decision to move to Indiana. {The Hoosier Scoop}

+ Mark Carlino says the move to Bloomington is motivated by the family’s love of the area. {Indianapolis Star HS blog}

+ Columnist Rick Bozich writes that while Tom Crean is still playing catch up with 2010 recruiting efforts, improvement is on the way. {Louisville Courier-Journal}

+ Crean tells supporters at Huber’s that he will not rest until the Indiana program is great again. {The News and Tribune}

Quotable:

That’s fine. But don’t be mad at me if we find another guy who has more belief in what we’re going to do, wants to work hard and wants to help us make it back a little faster.” – Crean on his reaction when recruits question last year’s 6-25 record and how long it might take for IU to reach the NCAA Tournament again.

  • Kelin Blab
This guy is good I love that quote......
To summarize Crean ......screw you, I will find a guy that gets it.....
  • Kelin Blab
Gee Calipari in trouble already....what a surprise....good luck KY...
  • dale11
Looks like coach cal is about to lose final four #2...
  • CraiginOR
Kelin, check out this article, it even mentions the troubled former IU coach ( he shall not be named ). Calipari looks too slick, too much bad bball karma. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/185861-colle...

Oh, and Calipari recruit, John Wall has been convicted of breaking and entering
    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=421...
  • Kelin Blab
That is an awesome article....KY/Cal and Illannoy are really pushing hard at Purdue for my team I hate the most...hopefully weber can find away to piss off crean so I can move them to #1. I so want this thing to backfire on KY....
  • CraiginOR
lemme get this straight...Calipari 's pal is Worldwide Wes. Wes recruits or helps recruit Rose, Rose's brother somehow ( mystery ) gets $2000 travel money and Rose somehow has different handwriting for his THIRD SAT...the one he passed. Calipari insists he is innocent. Well, thank the basketball gods he wasn't making excessive recruiting phone calls or he would be in real trouble with the NCAA
  • Hey Craig,

I'm with you, if WWW is in anyway involved, then that has to be viewed as Calipari involved, no matter what Cal's knowledge was.

I've always wondered why the NBA angle worked with Cal. I know his relationship with WWW is cool for some recruits, but really, name one really good NBA player that played for Cal other than Rose and Camby? And Rose and Camby were like 12 years apart.

    I just don't get it.

Love the Crean quote as well. Jody Demling is reporting that LN's Justin Martin has reopened his recruiting, backing off the Lousiville commitment. Interesting....Someone tell Teague there is too much drama going on in the bluegrass state.
  • BobbyDigital
    I'm sure Teague already knows.

Even if coach isn't interested in Martin, this is still a good thing for us.
  • Kelin Blab
I think what has happened with Martin he is having a helluva summer and half his team is going to L'Ville....the kid may want to cut ties with all the LN guys......there also may be something else going on at L'Ville....

what a great day for Kentucky college basketball......awesome...
  • jerryct
Over the years I have criticized Lou Watson, Bob Knight, Mike Davis, Kelvin Sampson. Now I find nothing at this moment to be critical about regarding Tom Crean. What a nice feeling to know we will work and play hard, get good grades, recruit hard and fair, play competitive ball, treat fans with respect etc.......................

I am proud of our program .............if I were a KY fan I could not stand the smell
  • GFDave
I looked at the schools that Rivals listed as having had recruited Martin and neither IU nor Purdue were on the list. I don't know why that would be.

A couple days ago we talked about scholly numbers and I wrote that Crean would probably just sign two for 2010. But yesterday he said he was looking to sign 3 for 2010. He also intimated that the class of 2011 was very important to him.

To me this means that we should expect Roth and/or Jones to transfer and also that one of the 2009 kids probably will only play a year. I find that hard to believe, but if you look at the numbers, its difficult to see how Crean signs 3 kids for both 2010 and 2011 without that happening. Maybe David Williams decommits. Any thoughts?
  • Kelin Blab
Dave I think we go one, maybe two for 2010. IU showed some interest in martin but I don't think they offered him. I expect Jones to stay given his success last year and heightned role this year. Roth....has role on this team. This year will tell alot on how that develops.

David Williams stays for sure because of his ties with the coaching staff and it seems to be a good fit.

The scholly situation is so complicated for me, I chose not to even think about as there are so many factors involved....
  • GFDave
Here is the quote from yesterday with Crean talking to Jody Demling:

Quote: "Crean said he expects to sign only three recruits for the Class of 2010 after the Hoosiers added seven new players to the roster each of the past two seasons. Six signees and transfer Jeremiah Rivers will be the seven new faces this coming season.

"Somehow we have to get class balance," Crean said. "It's no way to get your program up and running - signing so many players in two classes - but we had no choice.

"Now, we have to get balance. We have to figure out how to get the '11 class where we can get some people in that class. There are some very good players in that class." End Quote.

So 2010 already has Williams. Irving is a top target. Crean wants one more, which would make for 13 schollies filling 12 slots.
  • CraiginOR
OK since there are a lot of different topics going on on this thread I'd like to know what everyone thinks of ESPN's Katz' first pick of this seasons top 25 ( no love for Lville, UConn, Mizzou to name a few)

Even though I think there is some fishy business going on at UK, I think they will win the national championship. Michigan might be more composed enough to take down that young inexperienced talent at KU.
  • roninJeffersonville
Like coach Cal has proven time and time again. He can recruit but not coach. Sure he has the talent, but no proven track record.
Did anyone hear the rumor that coach Cal is holding try-out for students to take SAT/ACT test for the upcoming basketball classes. Also, wonder if John Wall can serve his community service while at Kentucky.
  • I can't stand Cal either, but I wouldn't say no proven track record as far a coaching goes. Getting Umass and Memphis to the Final Four is no small feat.
  • Wooderson
No B10 school should be in the top 10. I know MSU had a good class. But just watch the bracket unfold without the Spartans there. Just a gut feeling though.
  • pacino
It will eventually come to haunt him and we will all be laughing. He may be "cool cat cal", but everyone makes mistakes and eventually forgets to cover something up. Kentucky fans are officially the most bipolar fans EVER!!!!!!!!!!! Monday Cal was basically God. No, they are complaining about getting punished. If u chose to pick a shady guy as ur commander than u have to live with the consequences. U can't have the best of both worlds. Someone tell the impatient and idiotic Kentucky fans that it takes time to build a program the right way. Trying to figure them out gives me a headache. Thats why I love bein a Hoosier. We will be an elite power in a couple years while they are under probation watchin us in March! In CTC we trust.
  • HoosierNational
Sounds like Sampson to me...how easily we forget our troubled past
  • MillaRed
One thing I will never get is the Calpari type people in this world. It takes a certain personality to bolt from a program under those circumstances, act like the second coming of Christ, nab all of these high profile recruits and act like the center of the universe knowing DAMN well the allegations are on the horizon.

What are these people thinking? Never ceases to amaze me.

In terms of IU recruiting, it seems to me Williams was a character/GPA recruit as a result of the recovery we are in. I have seen interesting articles however that note when his extremely talented AAU team is trailing or in a close game, Williams is always on the floor. Maybe a Jamarcus Ellis type talent without the reefer. (sorry that was bad)

Now, if we grab another non-top 100 I suppose the confusion will really set in. My hope is the 2009 class is the foundation. We grab 1-2 top 100s in 2010 if possible. In 2011 we only go for the top 50 or we hang on to the schollys.

I won't try to understand where we are or where we are headed on the recruiting front. I will confess I'm on pins and needles until it all shakes out.
  • Kelin Blab
Milla I agree the recruiting stuff is mind boggling......I try to boil it down this way for me....

    Teague or Irving
Will we recruit, offer, and sign D.Davis
I am cool with Williams, good kid good grades good program good family over 6'1
Plumlee, Zeller, or somebody over 6'9
  • MillaRed
You have made it clear that Dee is your man Kelin. Tell us more about him please. Is he the reason they won it all last season???
  • Kelin Blab
    Milla-

I became more of a D. Davis fan when they played against Pike, guarded teague solidly despite a size difference....then did the same a few weeks later against Ray Mac Jr.....BOTH WINS!

For south he does whatever is necessary for them to win, guards the best player, rebounds, make shots, and most importantly he plays with a lot of passion and you can see it on the court.

How he could fit in at IU.....in my opinion because

    1. We get Kyrie Irving a scoring guard...I am going to go against the grain here but Irving and Teague ...DO NOT belong in the backcourt together.....picture Bracey Wright and Robert Vaden as our two guards.....

    2. To play off of him D.Davis can be that distributing point guard, point of attack defender, and can break down a defense with his quickness. D.Davis is AJ Guyton minus 2 inches....

    3. Having played in the same backcourt with Hulls and Ray McCallum jr. I think he knows how to fill a role, on both ends of the court. Just as he will do this year with Carlino.....He could and probaly will average 20ppg by his senior year

Finally....He is an Indiana kid, in Bloomington, and will be at IU for 4 years with TWO of his teammates. South was not the most talented team on the court 50% of the time, and especially against Pike and Detroit Country Day....but those kids..Hulls and Davis know how to win.......
  • MillaRed
Sure would be interesting if Dee looks to be the better player with Carlino on the roster.

Sounds like they better give the kid some love before he ends up at Purdue.
  • Kelin Blab
HEre is some good info on IU and D Davis.....

I know they are waiting on Teague's decision to make an offer or not

Follow this link and scroll down to the bottom to see a video of Williams from the TOC last weekend.

I liked what little I saw. The kid has a body ready for the B10 and handles the ball well. He might not be the quickest, but he surely isn't slow. I can see him slashing into the paint from the wings and hitting pull-up jumpers or getting to the rim. I think he is ok. Certainly an improvement in talent and height from last year.
  • Kelin Blab
    Thanks for the link.....
I like what I saw and I like what he could become. At 6'7 with some handle and length he could help a ton on both ends. We don't need everyone to put up 20ppg but solid role players are a big plus. Could be a Jamarcus Ellis 6.0.......
  • DTFree
Is Crean saying in his quote that another David Williams is possible, that good general play and a good 'tude might be enough? I'm hoping IU can collect both of the Lawrence N. 2010 guys, but that's a wish and a prayer.
  • brucew
I have said many times If you want to be A Hoosier get on board or get out of the way. Glad to hear Coach Crean fills the same way. Hope player take note of this.
