St. Patrick’s Kyrie Irving looking for the right fit

by in Recruiting | May 11th, 2009

Kyrie Irving doesn’t plan to make a decision on where he’ll attend college until this fall. But as his recruitment plays out and he mulls over the schools on his list, he’s already sure of one thing.

“Once I step on campus, I’ll know it’s the right school,” Irving said.

The 6-2 point guard from St. Patrick’s (NJ) is considered by many to be Indiana’s primary target for the 2010 recruiting class. Not only is Irving looking for the right fit on the court, he’s also focused on finding the right fit in the classroom.

“Academics is the most important thing,” Irving told Inside the Hall. “Academics has been the primary thing in my household since I was probably eight years old. Secondly is probably the coaching staff and where I’ll fit in.”

Irving visited IU for last year’s season opening win over Northwestern State and he plans to take an unofficial visit to Bloomington this summer. He’ll also make stops at Notre Dame and Texas A & M. From there, he’ll trim his list to five schools at the end of the summer and begin scheduling official visits.

“I just try to sit back and enjoy every moment of it,” Irving said of the recruiting process. “Because a lot of people aren’t in my position. I’m just thankful for that in itself. Being around the coaches and getting to know everybody is just great. I’m just taking it all in as the process goes on.”

After transfer rules forced Irving to sit out several games last season, Irving quickly became acclimated to his new home at St. Patrick’s.

“Coming into St. Patrick’s, I was the new guy,” Irving said. “I had to find my way playing with other great players. Playing with Dexter (Strickland) and going against him everyday he just prepared me for the next level and competition and everything. He showed me the ropes around St. Patrick’s.”

With the graduation of Strickland (North Carolina) and Paris Bennett (George Mason), Irving is looking forward to becoming more of a leader during his senior campaign.

“The leadership role, I’m taking it,” he said. “I’ve always been a leader, so it’s nothing new. For St. Patrick’s it’s just another step, but teaching the younger guys is the most important thing for them next year. Also, we have a great group of guys. We lost a lot of seniors this year, a lot of good teammates, but we’re just taking another stepping stone. We’re trying to repeat and win a national championship.”

Although all of the schools on Irving’s list are on a level playing field, he’s in regular contact with Indiana coach Tom Crean and assistant Roshown McLeod. Not only are both coaches building a strong bond with Irving, they’re doing the same with his family.

“I talk to them as much as possible,” Irving said of the Indiana staff. “I just have a strong relationship with them. The relationship I have with them extends beyond me, it extends to my family. It just translates to everything about Indiana I like. They’re in with my family, so I’m close with them.”

In the running: Indiana, Texas A & M, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Seton Hall, Pittsburgh, Florida, Marquette, Maryland, Duke and Kentucky

Irving at the Adidas May Classic: Irving and the New Jersey Roadrunners are expected at this weekend’s Adidas May Classic in Bloomington.

Quotable – Irving on how the Indiana staff says they’ll use him: “They just want me to come in and play right away and make an impact. And that’s what I plan on doing at any college I go to.”

I like this kid's game, from the one game I saw on TV, but he really made his teammates better and appeared to be a great defender. I like how he said that academics comes first (may just be lip service) so you would think he couldn't hurt the APR.

Only thing that bothers me…..He said when he steps on to campus he will know it is the right school….and he has already been to Bloomington……

I wouldn't read much into that comment. In the context he made the statement, it was clear that he didn't mean it to be interpreted that way. He's a very intelligent kid who, unlike a lot of kids going through the process, has a plan that he's most likely going to stick with. I would be shocked if Indiana doesn't get an official visit in the fall.

Having lived in South Bend, I can tell you ND isn't in a cornfield. Some parts of campus are really attractive; not on IU's level, but not bland. What does suck about ND is Coach Brey. He does nothing to develop teams and lets the kids do basically what they want on the court. Kyrie will be tempted, but if he's looking for success at the collegiate level, ND won't be it. They will stay in the mix probably because they are in the Big East and ND does ok recruiting the east coast, but I doubt we have ND as a strong competitor. IU's academics, chance to come in and get PT, challenge for a Big 10 title, go to the NCAA and play in front of 17,000 rabid fans will trump playing at the new Purcell Pavillion at the Joyce Center in S. Bend; which by the way is reducing its seating capacity to just under 10,000. Will have a nice suite area, but having been to many games there, it is like church in there most of the time, except when a really hot team comes to town. I look for IU in his top 2.

I love that we are in the mix for all of this top talent, however, am I the only person a little concerned that these are all guards?

I would love to see us in the mix for some of the top Forward talent, the big bruisers that really make the Big Ten. We have seen in past years how not having a big man on the block has hurt us, why aren't we hearing more of these reports about big men?

Again, I love what Coach Crean is doing, but I am a little concerned that we're recruiting a little too much like we're in the Big East. Any reports on some top big men considering Bloomington?

Alex, Looking at Ron Patterson made me wonder, wasn't there a 6'9 kid from Broad Ripple, said to be an excellent player, who liked IU but was having academic problems? Thanks for all you do.

Crean is going for the Branch McCranken “Hurryin Hoosiers” style of play by recruiting all of these guards.

I'm only somewhat concerned right now about IU not being mentioned as a front runner with some of the 4 and 5 position talent as of right now. I think a great team must be built around the backcourt. One thing you could see in every game IU played last year was our inability to penetrate and to consistently hit the 3. Other teams just didn't respect our ball handling ability, decision making and shooting. Teams would have our guards pressed so far out we couldn't shoot it and that would also make passing lanes longer and more easily defended. Great guards can make good big men GREAT. I like what he's doing. Some of the best forwards and centers in the country want to play for teams with very talented guards to feed them the ball. Crean not only wants to win but he wants to get back on the national scene. How he does that is very important.
