Hoosiers in the mix for 2010 five-star Barton

by in Recruiting | May 7th, 2009

The list of suitors for 2010 Baltimore wing Will Barton is filled with some of the elite programs in college basketball.

The 6-6 Barton, a five-star recruit on both Rivals and Scout, averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists this past season at Lake Clifton en route to a 28-0 record and a state championship.

And the Indiana staff has taken notice.

“Indiana is doing a great job,” Barton told Inside the Hall. “They’re recruiting very hard, which is what I want.”

“What makes it very good for them is that I’m not just hearing from assistant coaches. I’m hearing from Tom Crean himself, the head coach. I love that. He’s a great guy, everybody knows he’s a great coach. He’s honest and up front with me. They check up on me when they can and they just want to let me know they are here for me.”

Despite recent speculation that he is close to making a decision, Barton is taking his time and enjoying the recruiting process.

“It’s crazy,” he said. “Elite programs are calling. But it’s exciting. I never take it for granted it and I love it.”

Besides Indiana, Barton is hearing from a list of schools that includes Arizona, Kentucky, Memphis, Louisville, Villanova, Pittsburgh, Oklahoma, Florida, Tennessee and Maryland. And although his summer will be packed with AAU and camps, he hopes to take some visits when his schedule allows.

“There’s definitely a chance I would go see Bloomington,” Barton said. “I just gotta sit down with my mom and we’ve got to come up with some dates because it’s so hard with playing AAU and school’s not over yet. I’m just trying to figure all of that out and put something together for my visits.”

+ Quotable, Will Barton on the history of IU basketball: “I know Indiana is one of the top five greatest schools as far as basketball programs in the history of college basketball, if not one. I know they have national championships. Win a lot of Big Ten titles. Been to the elite eight and Final Four a bunch of times.”

I would say that the Calbert Cheaney, Greg Graham, Damon Bailey, Alan Henderson led teams did pretty well for the school ('91 Big Ten Champs, '92 Final Four, '93 Ranked #1 in final AP poll – Elite Eight) If you want to say that has been a long time since we've added to the history, I can not argue, but there has been some great players here too. Brian Evans, AJ Guyton, and DJ White come to mind immediately.

I also think of our version of the 0-4's (reference to Florida's two-time national champs) that either did not stay, did not come, or did not succeed to the level of our expectations. Ouside of DJ White, there was Josh Smith (Atlanta Hawks), AJ Ratliff (Indiana Mr. Basketball), James Hardy (NFL 2nd Round), and Robert Rothbart (7' center, who I believe played for the Pacers briefly). That would have been a pretty good line-up for any team.

That being said, I am not against 5-star players looking at and coming to our beloved program, and I do not want to be “that guy” who rains on the parade. In basketball it is proven that star athletes and players make the whole world of difference. The Bulls would not have won like they did without MJ, nor the Celtics without Bird, Lakers without Magic, Cavs without LeBron, etc….However, the difference is the make-up of the 5-star, highly recruited athlete. The previously mentioned stars were the hardest working people on their respective teams. People who “get it.” If the athlete is a prima donna, they only hurt a closley knit, small locker room. Chemistry is VERY important in a small locker room. I have a problem with people saying they like this kid's character when all he did was praise the program and Coach Crean for paying attention to him. Sorry, makes no sense to me…..

I know where you are coming from about landing these amazing 5 stars like teague and Barton, cause I as well get caught up in the vision of the “perfect team” but we will need these type of roll players like a John Paxson which might what Crean has in mind for this Williams kid so i have these visions as well but the perfect teams wont have great chemistry with 5 stars on the bench…..

Even if the rumors about Pitino taking the Sacramento Kings job are without merit, I'm hoping that the UofL program at least appearing to be less stable helps to turn this one in our favor.

    Ahhh You Tube……
Based on this highlight video of “the WB” I get a CDR vibe from him. Multiple scoring options, lengthy…high high energy. Could be a good defender on the perimeter with his length (thats for you Jerry). Would love to have you WB.

  • because it's Indiana

Good point BFowler. Barton is a smart kid, if he doesn't choose us I hope he doesn't go with Kentucky.

With Patterson coming back, Kentucky looks like they are going to be stacked with final four caliber talent. I find myself hoping that they will have chemistry issues with all those 5 stars. Probably wishful thinking.

Crean is every bit as charismatic as Cal, and I'd put our fan base up against anybody's. With the new facilities on the way I see no advantage for KY in the future. The rivalry could even grow to current UNC Duke levels (nationwide). That's exciting!

Can anyone educated me with a comparison of Crean's offense versus the dribble drive? Seems to me that we'll be after the same type of players to fit the system (penetrating guards, length on the wings, fast tempo types etc).

Just goes to show you how dirty KS was…..Lance “Born Ready” Stephenson can't find a home. The Mickey D's all american has been plagued by off court issues and I remember him at Midnight Madness with KS. How close we were to Born Ready and the kid from Kentucky……Thanks Kelvin…For leaving….

I pray Crean saw something in Williams to offer a scholarship. IU has sucked since 2002 – amazing the fans are still hopeful.

IU's return to prominence requires at least two of the top 10 players from 2010 – Ferguson, Irving, or Barton. Ohio St and UK are loaded – makes for awesome fanfare for a couple of years with these matchups. Come on, no campus compares to IU and their families can easily come and watch them play.

Hulls is the next Bobby Hurley and will lead us to a championship – he is a perennial winner!
