Dominique Ferguson opens up his recruitment

  • 04/03/2009 6:40 pm in

According to a tip we received early this evening, Lawrence North junior Dominique Ferguson has de-committed from the University of Kentucky. It was speculated after the coaching change in Lexington that Ferguson would re-open his recruiting process and a tipster tells Inside the Hall that Ferguson has done just that.

8:30 PM Update: Ferguson has confirmed to Inside the Hall that he has re-opened the recruiting process.

8:15 PM Update: Our friend Jody Demling of the Louisville Courier-Journal has confirmed that the five-star forward has re-opened the recruiting process with Ferguson’s father, Deon. The report says that IU is “no doubt” one of the schools Ferguson will consider.

    Gotta like this.

This would be a huge land for Crean. Any chance that he eventually signs with the mafioso, Calipari, anyway at Kentucky?

  • Kelin Blab

Smitty I don't think so and here is why….Cal has ALOT of 6'8 guys following him to KY along with some others he recruited for the following season, and I think DF recognized that early……

I think this is GREAT, I know this kid and he is a GOOD DJ White type of kid! Ironically he is rated higher than Deshaun Thomas in some scouting reports….I love it I love it

  • jessehite

I'm betting he will choose between IU and Syracuse. Supposedly, Dominique has an “infatuation with the latter. Let's hope he sees the light and commits to Crean!

  • jgongora86

I hope coach Crean can convey to him that as long as he plays hard he will always be loved by the IU faithful. I hope he gets a chance to talk to D.J. White about the IU experience. He went through the worst of times, and I still believe he feels he made the right decision because he is one of our most favored hoosiers. Very few programs can say that?

  • BGleas

Seems like encouraging news. I've said all along that IU just needs one big-time in-state player to take a chance on the program, then all of a sudden it will become “cool” again to play for in-state team.

  • Wild Willy

Don't be surprised if he ends up at Purdue. They were his stated second choice before he surprised everyone and declared for KY.

  • Hardwood83

Come on Willy don't ruin our fun. You're telling me this kid committed to UK and his second choice was PU?!? I'm trying to muster up some like for him but you're making it tough. Hopefully he'll stop flirting with the dark side on come on board.

  • indiana52

Was PU is second choice because of what was going on with IU. Maybe he had to look at one state team, and considered PU. After all he did choose KU over the boilers. Hopefully now that the Hoosiers are going to get back on track that will steer him our way. Does anyone know if he committed before or after coach Crean was hired.

  • jacob

if IU gets ferguson they will dominate college basketball in about 2 years

  • Bryan

He committed to Kentucky within days of Crean getting the job. I remember at the time thinking that Crean probably didn't even get the chance to talk to the kid the first time around, since he was dealing with the immediate problems with Basset/Ellis/Holman, etc.

  • Kelin Blab

I remember KS was recruiting him hard and he came to a couple of IU games and sat behind the bench…..but when all KS Hell broke loose, he moved towards KY….Crean really didn't have a chance at the kid….BUT…to his credit, Crean still attended LN games looking at some of LN's other guys who are not committed and it may have paid off….

  • Scott W

Coach Cream will have to work hard to land Ferguson. I would love to see him at I.U., But I'm afraid that he may follow his other team mates to U of L.
    hope I'm wrong.

  • indiana52

What concerns me is all of his LN teammates going to Louisville. Not that much farther away. Better there than PU or UK.

I think that could work in IU's favor (wishful thinking), at some point he may want to venture away from his teammates and create his own path….following them would be LN South…..

  • HoosierSmitty

Why the infatuation? Because Melo went there or what? Hopefully he realizes the real pot of gold comes when you help lead Indiana to a national title.

  • JerryCT

I read that Oriakhi( Mac All AMerican ) is opening up his recruitment as well based on recruiting issues at UCONN and he is a senior. I hope Crean makes some moves to capitalize on the uncertainty put there among these programs.

  • Taskmaster75

That would be intense, but will we have the scholarships? Getting a guy like Oriakhi would make us so deep…

  • HoosierEyes

Can you imagine what Crean might do with a 6'9″ guy that describes himself as a guy that works outside in and loves to slash to the basket? I mean it seems like that's been Crean's type of game going back to D. Wade and before, so to me it seems like a perfect fit. I may be biased, however…

Any of you that are “in the know” have any idea how long it might take for this story to really develop?

  • CutterInChicago

I've read that Oriakhi is not wavering on UConn, the beauty of the internet. If he is and if we're somehow in the mix, that would be great.

  • Haystacks

he and his dad have already stated that Lville and IU will no doubt be looked at. However PU and Syracuse could be in it as well.

  • plane1972

Off subject, but I was at the Thunder-Pacer game last night in OKC and was delighted to be in the house for DJ's NBA debut on his home court. He looks great (leaner and more defined). He was very efficient on the offensive end. I think he went 5-6 for 12 pts. and grabbed a couple boards. His mid-range jumper is looking good. Beautiful start to what is sure to be a long and illustrious pro career.

Whats the deal with Deshaun Thomas looking at Iu? Is this a rumor or for real? Can u imagine him with Watford and Ferguson. I am getting ahead of myself.

  • jgongora86

Not only that but what's up with the rumor of Tyler Zeller transferring to IU?

  • kgork

All these rumors posted in these comments are making my head spin.

  • dale11

    Sources…?

  • jgongora86

No source really, its just that their talking about it like crazy in the scout site. I should of said that from the beginning. My bad.

  • Kelin Blab

    Dale ….

heard on wnde here in Indy, JMV said two things….
One the local guys on NC's local radio told him TZ is NOT happy at UNC and it is a situation that they really don't need Tyler, so if he leaves fine….they have ed davis….

Second…..Crean was on and said….he wouldn't be surprise if there were major changes in his team next year…..what I got from this, is someone else is thinking about transferring….

If Tyler leaves UNC, I would almost bet he is headed to IU, I think he is good friends with Capo and Hulls, both Indiana elite guys…

  • jgongora86

Thanks Kelin for clearing that up.

  • luke

    and matt roth

  • Indiana Boy

zeller is not transferring to IU, however, his younger brother Cody has IU on his list

  • Indiana Boy

as a friend of luke zeller, tyler is not transferring, however Cody is considering IU as well as other schools

After watching that national championship game last night (north carolina ties IU with 5 national championships) it really makes me realize we need some players now. We (crean and company) really need to land this kid. Lets start building for that 6th championship now. As you saw with North Carolina – most of the time it takes 4 years to get there.

  • tberry

It takes 4 years IF you have something to build from. IU will take longer. We are no starting with much!!!

  • indiana52

The sad thing is NC is winning them now it`s been to long for the Hoosiers. Most kids don`t even remember when Knight was at IU. We will get there I hope soon.

That's why we need this kid – him and the others would start a foundation

  • JerryCT

I wonder how Jordan Crawford feels now about Xavier. He could be a great player but I donot want him back

  • Kelin Blab

mmmmm Jerry…..I want to say that, but Jordan was my this years Verdell Jones….he started out a little shaky but got better as the season progressed..I really wanted him to stay……..however I am of the cloth now, Crean should only recruit guys 6'9 or taller for the next 5 years !!

Now he very well may be pissed is coach is gone and I feel for the kid but hopefully he hangs in there……..

  • JerryCT

Are you or anyone on this site going to watch the Derby all star game . I guess it is the first time Watford, Creek, Hulls play on the same team …….or do they?

  • pacino

    when is the derby classic?

  • Kelin Blab

Jerry i'm not, hope someone blogs it or streamlines it…..
I believe it is this weekend…..

Unfortunately there is not any barnstorming anymore, I wish CTC would come up with something to fill that void…..

  • I'll be there Friday and Saturday. Going to have plenty of coverage of the event on ITH. If there is WiFi in the arena, we'll have a live blog most likely along with the H-T.

  • jerryct

    You guys are great

  • dabig

Williams is fortunate that Lawson and Hansbrough aren't playing in the NBA this year. The real gems are guys who are “that good” and who are willing to stay with a program for three or four years. They're hard to find.
Under different circumstances, a guy like EJ might have been able to carry a team to the Final Four, but who knows?
I'm hoping that Crean has good judgment on these matters.

  • keeter

Hanbourough won't be playing in the NBA anytime soon…of course I thought that about Brad Miller too
