Malik Story decides to transfer

by in Media | March 26th, 2009

We heard the rumors toward the end of the season. But Malik Story told reporters after IU’s season ending loss to Penn State that he was planning to stick around for another season in Bloomington. Here’s a refresher of what he told Herald Times reporter Jared Poertner immediately after the season ended:

“I’m going to be here. A lot of people say I’m not going to be here, (but) I love my teammates, love my coaches and love this place.”

Not so fast. The freshman wing from California has decided to transfer. Our friend Chris Korman of the H-T/Hoosier Scoop broke the story and has the confirmation from Tom Crean:

“I support Malik and his family’s decision to go to a school that is closer to home. As a parent, I understand the need to be close to family. We have encouraged Malik to continue to take advantage of getting his individual workouts in with our team and to utilize the academic support system he has here at Indiana until the end of the semester.”

This is probably a smart move for Story. If he truly wants to be closer to home, that’s certainly understandable. Bloomington is a far different world from Los Angeles. And furthermore, he likely would have been buried on the depth chart next season behind guys like Nick Williams, Maurice Creek and Christian Watford. For now, we say so long to you, Malik Story. We hardly knew ye.

B.J. Mullens declares for NBA Draft

by in Opponents | March 26th, 2009

For the third consecutive season, Ohio State head coach Thad Matta is losing a talented freshman center to the NBA Draft. 7-footer B.J. Mullens announced his intentions to enter the 2009 NBA Draft in a press release issued by the university:

“After long consideration I have decided to enter my name in the 2009 NBA Draft. This was not an easy choice because I love Ohio State University but the many positive reasons for moving on outweigh the many good reasons for staying.”

While Mullens may very well be a late lottery/mid first round pick based on potential, another year under his belt would have done him wonders. But in the spirit of IU getting back in the thick of things in the Big Ten race next year, I say: So long, B.J. Could you take Evan Turner with you?

Kentucky is a great job, if you like insane expectations and a rabid fanbase

by in Opponents | March 26th, 2009

As I watched the Hoosiers struggle through a six win season, I took some solace in what I saw take place in Lexington, Kentucky this season. Despite two future NBA players and one of the worst years ever in the SEC, Kentucky managed to lose 14 games and miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 17 years.

Kentucky, which ran a perfectly respectable coach in Tubby Smith out of town a mere two seasons ago, is reportedly on the verge of severing ties with Billy Gillispie. The rallying cry amongst Big Blue Nation has shifted from ‘Blame Tubby’ to ‘Blame Billy.’

The notion of changing coaches after just two seasons is drastic and unheard of in most cases, but Gillispie’s unwillingness to stray from his stubborn ways have probably sealed his fate more than the wins and losses.

(Excessive phone calls do not qualify as most cases.)

But ultimately, like any top five job, the pressure to win big and win immediately might be more apparent at Kentucky than anywhere else.

Gatorade names Jordan Hulls Indiana Player of the Year

by in Recruiting | March 25th, 2009

Alex has been slurping Bloomington South’s Jordan Hulls the last few months, and deservedly so: He’s been having quite the impressive season and has his team on the verge of a state title.

Alex has not been the only one noticing the play of Hulls, though. Gatorade has named him the Indiana Player of the Year. He joins some pretty good company the last few years as Tyler Zeller was your winner last year, Eric Gordon grabbed it two years back, Greg Oden snatched it the previous two years, and um, A.J. Ratliff won it the year before that.

As the Basketblog notes, Mr. Basketball isn’t announced for another two weeks, but one could assume Hulls has a good shot at that one, too.

That’s a wrap: Verdell Jones

by in Commentary | March 25th, 2009

‘That’s a wrap’ is Inside the Hall’s player-by-player postseason breakdown of the 2008-2009 Indiana Hoosiers. Today: Verdell Jones.

Final statistics: 11.0 ppg; 3.1 rpg; 71 percent FT’s; 45 percent FG’s; 21 steals

The transformation of Verdell Jones from a player battling walk-on Daniel Moore for playing time to the lead guard for the Hoosiers was one of the top story lines of the season. The freshman from Champaign (IL) averaged 14.5 points over IU’s last 11 games. Once Jones became acclimated to the physical style of the Big Ten, he used his length to get easy baskets inside and also showcased a pull-up jump shot that was unstoppable at times.

With the addition of Jeremiah Rivers and Jordan Hulls to the roster for 2009-2010, it will be interesting to see if the IU coaching staff shifts Jones to the two-guard. If he can improve his strength over the summer, the transition should be seamless and it would allow Jones to embrace the scorer’s mentality he found down the stretch.

Quotable:

This season is definitely a learning experience. But I think the most we got out of this season is if you work hard and listen to what the coaches say you can improve by leaps and bounds. That’s definitely what we did this year.” – Verdell Jones after IU’s season ending loss to Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament.
