B.J. Mullens declares for NBA Draft

by Alex Bozich in Opponents | March 26th, 2009

For the third consecutive season, Ohio State head coach Thad Matta is losing a talented freshman center to the NBA Draft. 7-footer B.J. Mullens announced his intentions to enter the 2009 NBA Draft in a press release issued by the university:

“After long consideration I have decided to enter my name in the 2009 NBA Draft. This was not an easy choice because I love Ohio State University but the many positive reasons for moving on outweigh the many good reasons for staying.”

While Mullens may very well be a late lottery/mid first round pick based on potential, another year under his belt would have done him wonders. But in the spirit of IU getting back in the thick of things in the Big Ten race next year, I say: So long, B.J. Could you take Evan Turner with you?

Bj Mullens will get drafted.....he shouldn't get drafted cause he sucks...but he will......has Pacers written all over him......

Yes, he's terrible, a clone of Deande Jordan from last year, but a team like the Pacers or the Heat will grab him, but I'm sure the Heat woudl rather grab Thabeet.

Another kid who will regret leaving early when he's being cut in the Fall....

I'd actually prefer if Evan Turner stayed. If the Big Ten is going to regain any respect on a national scale(i.e. Big East, ACC), its star players need to stay around.

I think Matta's recruiting is starting to catch up to him. Its hard to maintain program continuity when so many kids leave after 1 year. I see a little bit of a slide occuring at O$U.

If he really loved OSU he would've said "THE Ohio State University."

apparently Mullens' life had some rough patches and him leaving early is about making the $$ now and being able to provide for himself & those closest to him. I applaud that, but really, he comes back for one more year and he goes from a borderline lottery pick to a top 5 pick...Matta's certainly done this to himself. It's great to recruit the way he does, but at some point the folks in Columbus are going to get real tired for the only national rankings to come by way of their recruiting classes. And they've pretty much bypassed the 2009 class to focus on 2010...

3 5-star recruits seems pretty nice....

he is smart to leave, he'll get one good contract and be the 9th man for the next 10 yrs. If he'd stayed in school his stock would have kept going down. He is a walking certified stiff
