Eric Gordon dishes on girls and hobbits (yes, you read that right)

by in Media | February 12th, 2009

Let me preface this by saying I’m a huge Eric Gordon fan. He seems to be a soft spoken, genuinely nice kid that does things the right way. I even own an “Air Gordon” t-shirt and admittedly watched YouTube highlights of him when I was down after IU losses to Northeastern and Lipscomb earlier this year. That said, if there is one weakness for Gordon, it’s his uber awkwardness when talking to the media. Case in point, this interview with Nick Friedell of the superb NBA blog, Ball Don’t Lie:

Ball Don’t Lie: Every rookie has to make a major transition once they get into the league, but you’ve gone from living in Bloomington, Indiana to living in Los Angeles, California. What has the transition been like?

Eric Gordon: Well, it’s a major difference. Bloomington is a small city and it’s just a whole different atmosphere. You’re on your own now; you’re basically a grown up. When you’re in college, you still have a lot of different priorities as a young adult. (The professional lifestyle) is just a totally different change.

Proof that Tom Crean’s human: Audible frustration

by in Commentary | February 12th, 2009

Since the day Tom Crean arrived on campus in Bloomington last April, he’s said all of the right things. After inheriting a situation that quickly turned far more sour than anyone could have ever imagined, Crean still managed to give off a positive vibe in the process of cleaning house. That, my friends, is not easy to do.

As fans, even though we knew we wouldn’t be rewarded in the win column this season, we finally had direction for the program we hold near and dear to our hearts.

But after skimming through the quotes following Tuesday’s loss to Minnesota, I got my first sense that all of the losing is finally starting to bother Crean:

“I don’t know, I guess I’m just tired of being close (to winning). Maybe it would be easier for me if we were getting blown out. I think we can win and I want the players to think they can win. We weren’t nearly as physical as I wanted us to be. Keeping it in perspective, I’m having a hard time with that. I don’t want to keep it in perspective. I expect more out of them and we just have to take care of the ball better, have to block out better, there’s no question.”

I call this to your attention not as a knock on Crean, but more as a credit to how positive he’s been during a season that’s been incredibly frustrating from a coaching perspective. It’s all well and good to talk about how hard IU is competing and how they’re improving, but ultimately what drives a great coach in any sport is winning. And after only tasting victory once in the last 63 days, Crean’s thirst for winning is finally starting to shine through in his words.

Pat Forde brings IU’s attendance into perspective

by in Media | February 11th, 2009

I’ve already said my piece on attendance at Assembly Hall this year, but since then and the addition of the $5 tickets in the balcony, attendance hasn’t been too shabby. If you make it cheaper, they will come. Sunday against the Illini, IU is going for a stripe out, having certain sections wear red, and others wear white. This is an idea I’ve heard proposed among students for a while now; I’m glad someone in the athletic department decided to actually follow through on it. Should be cool to see in action. (Correction: IU did a stripe out last year for the Michigan State game. Thanks commenter BornRed.)

According to Pat Forde (a one-time interview subject here at ITH), Assembly Hall is near sold out for the stripe out and compared to at least one team that’s been successful this year, we’re outdrawing them.

The first was the sight of Indiana (2) players and coaches engaging in a virtual group hug with the crowd of 14,247 in Assembly Hall after (finally) winning a Big Ten game last week against Iowa. The second was the news that Arizona State (3) is hoping to draw more than 11,000 fans for the first time this season when UCLA comes to Tempe on Thursday.

You read that right. The Hoosiers are 6-16, enduring what might be the worst season in school history — and easily outdrawing the 18th-ranked, 18-5 Sun Devils.

This is what’s known as the difference between a basketball school and a non-basketball school.

At Indiana, the winning percentage is .273 this season, but the gym is full to 79.8 percent capacity (average attendance is 13,933). The fans are overachieving.

At Arizona State, the winning percentage is .783, but 14,198-seat Wells Fargo Arena has been only 58.2 percent full. The fans are missing out on a good show from coach Herb Sendek, James Harden & Co.

Well, that’s sure comforting. In a year where the product on the court has been pretty brutal, our fans are still showing up in bigger numbers than a ranked program at the moment.

Small victories. I’ll take it.

Good, Bad and Ugly: Minnesota

by in Good Bad Ugly | February 10th, 2009

FINAL SCORE: Minnesota: 62 IU: 54

THE BAD AND UGLY:

The first half. Whoa boy: it was tough to watch, even by this year’s standards. Turnover after turnover after turnover. And then a few more turnovers. When the fist half was said and done, IU racked up 15 of ‘em. Minnesota snatched nine steals on the Hoosiers during the first half, cutting into the passing lanes for easy deuces. For the game, IU had 26 turnovers.

Breaking the press. When Minnesota decided to go full-court press on IU midway through the second half, they went on an 11-0 run.

THE GOOD:

IU kept it close on the road against a team that has been ranked for part of the season. This is all coming from a team that started four freshman and Kyle Taber, and were without their leading scorer in Devan Dumes. IU also played great defense, as Minnesota struggled to get anything going on the offensive end.

Like I’ve written about before, tonight was another night where IU’s opponent played down to the Hoosiers’ level. The Golden Gophers had 18 turnovers on the night; they’re averaging 14.

After a Matt Roth three with a little under 13 minutes to go, IU actually had the lead, 34-33. But a win was not to be.

Lastly, props to Malik Story. When IU couldn’t get a darn thing going on the offensive end in the first half, Story tallied 11 of the Hoosiers’ 20 points.

Crean and Dumes discuss the evil elbows

by in Media | February 10th, 2009

Tom Crean made Devan Dumes face the media briefly yesterday — part of the new “face the music” ethos at Assembly Hall — and the audio of their Q&A session is available via The Hoosier Scoop here.

One observation: Yes, elbowing people is bad. No, family issues are not an excuse. But can we all settle down just a teensy bit? Dumes didn’t kill anybody. I’m pretty sure he didn’t beat up Rihanna. And he’s definitely not that guy behind you on the train that keeps sneezing in your general direction (cover your mouth, you pestilent idiot). Dumes is being punished for his crime. Let’s move on.
