But when Crean took over at Marquette, it was in danger of becoming another DePaul or Providence -- a small Catholic college with great history that was no longer able to compete in bigtime college basketball. Marquette basketball did not begin with Tom Crean. But if he hadn't been successful, it might have all but ended with Tom Crean.<br><br>When you get busted on a little hanky panky, the smart man backs off for a while. Doing it again, well, it is a sign of arrogance or stupidity. Yes, Marquette won a title in 1977. But when Crean took over at Marquette, it was in danger of becoming another DePaul or Providence — a small Catholic college with great history that was no longer able to compete in bigtime college basketball. Marquette basketball did not begin with Tom Crean. But if he hadn't been successful, it might have all but ended with Tom Crean.
