Crean watches Elston in Hall of Fame Classic

by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | December 30th, 2008

Update: Franklin Central slipped past Tipton 43-41 in overtime to win the Hall of Fame Classic. Elston finished with 16 points and was named MVP of the event.

Indiana coach Tom Crean was on the scene earlier today in The Fieldhouse at New Castle as Class 2-A No. 1 Tipton knocked off Bluffon 49-36. Crean was spotted in the front row as Elston scored 14 points, but the Mr. Basketball candidate was in foul trouble for a good portion of the game.

The Blue Devils (8-0) will play in the Hall of Fame Classic championship game tonight at 8PM EST against Franklin Central. The Flashes are led by Purdue recruit Patrick Bade.

Don't know much about Elston. I have heard that he is a bit overrated.
  • I'd say it's totally the opposite. If anything, Rivals and Scout both have him underrated since he missed the entire summer. I'd be surprised if he doesn't start from day one.

The exact opposite. He is probaly the most underrated guy we have coming in.....tune in tonite....

When was the recruiting blackout? I heard that Collinsworth for Duke was at a tournament game here in Raleigh watching/talking to John Wall and that Duke was preparing self-reporting papers for the violation. Don't know if it's true or not.....

I read the same thing about Duke and this sounds eerily similar. Thanks for the update.

An Indiana native and highly acclaimed recruit told my brother over christmas break that he thinks Elston is very overrated and a bag of douche with an attitude problem. I know the source and his family and theyre very good people. Regardless, I hope he brings his -A- game to B-town.

I am from Tipton so my opinion probably has some bias in it. In turn, the link I posted above is from a Blufton news article. Take note of the comments at the end about Derek and the writing on his shoes. I'd like to add that ALL of the Elstons-brothers, sisters, mom and dad, are some of the most likable and genuine people you will ever meet. Considering the bloodline and tradition he is from, Derek is uncommonly grounded.

I'll ramble about Dereks abilities in a later post but as a quick update, Mr. Elston had a great game last weekend (vs. Eastern-Howard County) that included 4 monstrous dunks. One came off a fast break assist in which the point guard kissed it off the glass and Derek powered down a two handed rim rocker; another was a one handed flush off a missed shot. I'd say the knee is just fine...
