Place George Mcginnis on the 1973 final four team and John Wooden would have one less National Championship banner.

I started to watch Indiana basketball in 1967. I was nine years old.
My first game was the Michigan game on Feb 17, 1967. A 98-92 win for the Hoosiers.
My favorite IU team was the 1972-73 Hoosiers that went to the 1973 NCAA Final Four.
The top ten IU players I have selected are those I watched play for the Cream and Crimson. All the following players also used their eligibility.

#1 Steve Downing....... 47pts/25reb game with Kentucky in1972. Played the game basically on one leg.

#2 Steve Green............ First Knight recruit Green and May were the best forwards I have ever seen on the same team. The 75 team was the best College Basketball team I have ever watched.

#3 Mike Woodson........ Had a great feather touch shooting the basketball. I really enjoyed his bank shot. The bank shot is a lost art.

#4 Kent Benson ....... The big fellow fit the middle. Had a great sweeping hook. This shot is also from long gone days. http://www.ioffer.com/i/37868366

#5 Ray Tolbert I remember the comments that he would not last a week with
Coach Knight ! A reat athlete. http://www.ioffer.com/i/37031781

#6 Randy Wittman ........ Had a great floor presence. http://www.ioffer.com/i/37031781

#7 Alan Henderson ......... A real gem for four years.

#8 Calbert Cheaney ..... Got a lot out of his abilities http://www.ioffer.com/i/49677851

#9 Damon Bailey ... .. Coach Knight should have let him run the team the first day of his career. I think Coach Knight never got over Damon's popularity. The irony is that Coach Knight started that popularity when Damon was in eighth grade!!

#10 Steve Alford.......Got a lot out of his abilities! A real Indiana gym rat. We need
more of his types on future Hoosier teams. http://www.ioffer.com/i/49677851

I just finished the book "Mac's Boys". It the book about Branch McCracken
and the Legendary 1953 Hurryin Hoosiers.

I brought it online for almost pennies and it came like a new book.

The book was outsatnding and tells great stories about Branch, Slick Leonard
Schlundt and others on that team. Lots of mentioning of the old Bloomington
and the campus that you would dearly remember.

I have two boys presently at IU...senior and junior.

I too have followed IU since I was a young boy (born 4/27/47) but Walt
Bellamy is about as far back as I can remember even though Schlundt was from South
Bend where I was born and raised, I was on campus for the U Conn game this
last year and went to the game...first ever.

Hoosier Basketball is part of my soul and I am so excited with the new coach
coming in.

I truly regret Bob Knight's demise as he was all part of IU great tradition.

I have an appointment in 15 min otherwise I could chat with you forever
about IU basketball.

Thanks for the reply.

In a message dated 8/2/2008 12:14:12 P.M.
Yes, I was 5 1/2, or so. I got my hair cut at a barber's shop called "Woodys" on 3rd Street near Jordan Ave. and met Charley Krack (sp?) a foreward on the team. My dad wouldn't waste a ticket on me because I was too young to "appreciate" it. I told Charley. Next thing I knew Dad was taking me to the games where I sat with "Mid Burger" who owned a small hamburger-milk shake place next to the Princess Theater on N. Walnut. Mid and her husband gave free food to lots of athletes in Bloomington for many years, including Charley Krack. Someone in the athletic department made sure that Mid had some extra seats around her for "guests". Later on I remember getting a coupon for a free milk shake for each "over-the-fence" home run in little league from Mid, I received my first at 10.

I like your list and also agree in bringing back Coach Knight.
All Hoosiers including the current administration in B-TOWN should
bury the hatchet with Coach Knight.
Coach Knight should be brought back when the new practice facility is completed and have the building named after him.
Coach Knight always did say that he would rather practice then play a regular
scheduled game!
